Pro-Iran Rally Rocks Potiskum As Ibrahim Zakzaky Followers Mourn Ali Khamenei

PRO-IRAN supporters staged a public rally in Potiskum, Yobe State, as followers of Ibrahim Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, marched through parts of the town to express solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran and condemn the reported killing of Ali Khamenei.

According to reports, the demonstrators gathered in large numbers, chanting slogans and carrying placards in support of Iran’s leadership while criticising what they described as foreign aggression. The rally, which was held under the banner of the Islamic Movement’s local chapter, was largely peaceful but drew attention from security operatives who monitored the procession to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Participants described Khamenei as a symbol of resistance and called for unity among supporters of Iran’s political and religious leadership. The gathering also featured prayers and speeches condemning his reported killing and urging continued support for Iran.

Local authorities have not issued an official statement on the rally, and there were no immediate reports of violence or arrests. However, security presence was heightened in parts of Potiskum as a precautionary measure.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, a Shiite organisation led by Zakzaky, has in the past organised demonstrations in solidarity with Iran and its leadership, particularly during periods of heightened tensions involving the Middle Eastern country.

Background

1) I wrote a series on this thread about things that happened in northern Nigeria in the 1970s and 1980s. There was a lot of tension because there was competition between Saudi Arabia /Sheikh Gummi The First (who were promoting Sunni Islam) and Iran/Sheikh Zakzaky (who were promoting Shia Islam).

2) At this point we need to address an issue that has often cropped up on Nairaland since 2005. Iran has not been involved in Al-Qaeda, ISIS, ISWAP and those other terrorist groups (there's always a nairalander that props up with that false claim, but he is usually schooled). Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Boko Haram and all those other groups say that they are affiliated to Sunni Islam, while Iran is the biggest Shia country. They are of different denominations and they are actually opponents.

If you are looking for the group that Iran supports in Nigeria, look no further than the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) led by Sheikh Zakzaky.

3) I have written about the IMN and I'll simply tell you why I wrote about them (because that's the most important thing and it's what you need to know).

The IMN has a habit of staging marches and these marches have become a problem.

The IMN usually stages marches on their holy days and you'll see large number of IMN members walking down an important expressway in Kaduna. Nobody can pass when they are marching. This often causes unbelievable traffic jams and disturbs the lives of people living in the area.

To make matters worse, the IMN do not believe in Nigeria, they do not believe in the constitution or any earthly authority. Therefore they've often had clashes with government.

Sometimes government tries to ignore them, but General Sani Abacha's regime detained Sheikh Zakzaky, some of his children were killed during the Goodluck Jonathan era and many of his followers were killed when they blocked the road (because they were marching) and they refused to allow the chief of army staff (General Buratai) convoy to pass.

Generals in the convoy came down to beg the IMN members to move and allow the convoy to pass, but IMN youths were threatening the generals and hitting their chests (I actually saw the video of IMN youths tapping the chests of generals).

Then the bodyguards opened fire and were able to clear a path for the convoy to pass. (If I remember correctly, General Buratai was travelling between Kaduna and Zaria to attend the NDA graduation ceremony, but the IMN had blocked the highway).

Soldiers invaded the IMN compound later that night.

4) I once created a thread an in that thread I praised the inspector general of police because he did something that I had always wondered why IGPs had not done in the past.

This was the first Trump tenure and President Trump launched an attack that killed a senior Iranian general.

The inspector general of police put all policemen in Nigeria on high alert after that attack. That was the right thing to do.

You see, the IMN has a habit of staging marches anytime Iran is attacked and this always causes a lot of disruption. I want you to understand what I mean by disruption, so I'll tell you about something else.

The Army invaded Zakzaky's compound and IMN members also rioted. Therefore Zakzaky was arrested and had many court cases that were separately instituted by the Federal Government and the Kaduna State Government. The IMN staged marches any time Zakzaky appeared in court and I need you to go to YouTube and watch videos of those marches and see the chaos it caused in Abuja and Kaduna.

5) The purpose of this post is to say that the security services in Nigeria (especially in Abuja and Kaduna) need to be on high alert because the IMN might stage more marches to protest against the attacks on Iran.

IMN members protest in Kano over reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader

March 2, 2026

Hundreds of members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) on Sunday staged a protest in Kano over the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

The demonstrators, carrying Iranian flags and portraits of Khamenei, marched through parts of the city in what they described as a solidarity action following the joint U.S.–Israeli strikes that reportedly led to the Iranian leader’s death.

The peaceful procession began at Fagge Central Mosque around 3 p.m. and ended at the IMN Islamic Centre in Kofar Waika, where participants held speeches and prayers.

Scholars who addressed the gathering spoke on developments in the Middle East and their potential global implications, while a special prayer session was conducted for the people of Iran, seeking divine intervention amid the escalating conflict.

When contacted, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, said he would verify details from the Divisional Police Officer in the area. As of the time of filing this report, no further official statement had been issued.

The protest remained orderly, with no reported incidents of violence.
