Der Spiegel, one of the most reliable German sources have recently shocked the football world with the leaked documents containing information concerning the establishment of the new European Super League which would consist of sixteen top clubs including Chelsea, Man United, Real Madrid and the other and would replace the existing Champions League.

What happened?

Der Spiegel's Football Leaks team have lately presented the evidence of the initial attempts to create the new football league of the biggest European clubs. As has been reported by the German giant media, Real Madrid's president Florentino Perez received an email on October 22 with the subject line: "Draft of an Agreement of the 16". Accordingly, the information presented there is related to one of the most significant reforms the football world has ever witnessed that is currently being initiated by the 'secret society' or 'founders' - some most successful European clubs aiming for a huge modification. Apparently, the new Super League is aimed at replacing the Champions League.


What are the rules of the alleged tournament?

The League is meant to consist of eleven 'founding' clubs: Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, PSG, Juventus and AC Milan. The above-mentioned teams won't face a risk of being relegated for at least 20 years. However, there would be another five 'initial guest such as Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Marseille, Inter Milan and AS Roma that may be ruled out of the competition. Those five clubs will play games with the teams from the second League that would fight for the promotion.

The Super League will reportedly be divided into two phases: the group stage and the knockout stage. It will also The nearest date for the grand change to happen is reported to be the 2021/2022 season.

What's the reason for the change?

The need for the reformation is quite trivial for the large clubs: the top European teams are eager to gain full control over the revenue distribution as the new tournament would provide the top clubs with a possible income of more than "500 million euro plus" (for example, Real Madrid received about 80 million euros after the victory in the 2016 Champions League). What's more, there are other possible causes for the new League to emerge.

Firstly, there too many participants (32) in the current format of the most prestigious European tournament. Small clubs that take part in the competition doesn't usually get a chance to advance to the playoff round or if they manage to qualify for the Round of 16, get eliminated on the early stages.

Secondly, the TV timing of the matches is not entirely financially beneficial: it would be better for the top clubs to play at least once in a while on weekends or during the more convenient time slots for the worldwide market.

This season UEFA have decided to start at least two games of each Matchday two hours before the regular match start time
Finally, the 'founders' suggest letting clubs that have been successful in the past get 'additional spots' in the tournament.
