Science/Technology / Man Becomes Instant After Meteor Worth More Than £1.4m Crashes Into His Roof (ph by Ndifreke31(m): 1:18pm On Nov 18, 2020
Josua Hutagalung, an Indonesian coffin maker has become an instant millionaire in a very unusual manner.

The man became an instant millionaire when a meteorite worth £1.4 million crashed through the roof of his house.

Josua Hutagalung, 33, was working on a coffin next to his house when the space rock smashed through the veranda at the edge of his living room in Kolang, North Sumatra.

The single stone, weighing 2.1kg, left a large hole in the tin roof and ended up buried 15cm deep in the soil beside the house.

Metoerites are priced by gram with the cheapest pure-rock varieties fetching $0.50 to $5.00 per gram., and those with rare extra-terrestrial metals selling for up to $1,000 per gram.

Josua, who managed to dig the rock out, said the meteorite was still warm and partially broken when he touched it.

It is estimated to be 4.5 billion years old and is classified as CM1/2 carbonaceous Chondrite, an extremely rare variety – worth around $1.85million, or $857 per gram.

‘When I lifted it, the stone was still warm and I brought it into the house,’ he told Kompas.

He added: ‘The sound was so loud that parts of the house were shaking too. And after I searched, I saw that the tin roof of the house had broken.

‘I strongly suspect that this rock is indeed an object from the sky that many people call a meteorite. Because it is impossible someone deliberately threw it or dropped it from above.’

Local residents in the area had heard large booming sounds which shook their houses. Dozens have visited Josua’s house to see the rare object. ‘Many people have come, out of curiosity, and want to see the stone,’ he said.

The meteorite, which is estimated to be 4.5 billion years old, is worth around £1.4 million. Josua was given the equivalent to 30 years’ salary for the space rock, according to The Sun.
The father of three said he would use some of the money to build a church in his community.

‘I have also always wanted a daughter, and I hope this is a sign that I will be lucky enough now to have one,’ he told The Sun.

US meteorite expert Jared Collins, who secured part of the main mass, said: ‘My phone lit up with crazy offers for me to jump on a plane and buy the meteorite.

‘It was in the middle of the Covid crisis and frankly it was a toss-up between buying the rock for myself or working with scientists and collectors in the US.

‘I carried as much money as I could muster and went to find Josua, who turned out to be a canny negotiator.’

Collins shipped the meteorite to the US, where it was bought by Jay Piatek, a doctor and meteorite collector from Indianapolis, according to the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Texas, US.

The meteorite is classified as CM1/2 carbonaceous Chondrite, an extremely rare variety, the Institute recorded.

Three further fragments of the meteorite were found in nearby areas when it crashed in August – one was discovered in a paddy field less than 3km from Josua’s home.

The meteorite, which has been officially named as Kolang, is estimated to have a total weight of 2.5kg, according to the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Texas, US.

The interior of the meteor is dark grey and black, with small light-coloured speckles.

‘It was a rock meteorite,’ The Head of the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (Lapan), Thomas Djamaluddin, told Kumparan. He said it was a rare phenomenon for the meteorite to fall in a residential area.

He added: ‘The amount of waste rock from the formation of the solar system is very large in space. Most of the meteorites fall in locations far from settlements, such as oceans, forests, or deserts.’

In August, as many as 200 fragments of a 4.6 billion-year-old meteorite fell in Santa Filomena, northeastern Brazil.

The biggest weighed 40kg and is worth over £20,000 – the same as 10 years’ worth of the average salary in the area.

Crime / Meet Amarjeet Sada, The World’s Youngest Serial Killer At 8-years-old by Ndifreke31(m): 10:00am On Oct 27, 2020
8-year-old, Amarjeet Sada from India has now become the world’s youngest serial killer after he murdered his first victim at 7 and has been killing since then.

He had allegedly killed three people by the age of eight, two of whom were related to him, Daily Star reports.

The young boy from the Begusaray district in Bihar, India was born in 1998.

The family, who were extremely poor, eventually moved to Mushahari village where his father worked as a labourer.

In 2006 Amarjeet allegedly murdered his six-year-old cousin, his uncle’s daughter.

Shortly after, he is believed to have murdered another infant, his own eight-month-old sister.

Some of Amarjeet’s family members and other members of the village were reportedly aware of his crimes, according to his uncle.

However, they were considered “family matters”, and therefore were not reported to authorities.

But in 2007, Amarjeet allegedly killed a neighbour’s six-month-old daughter, called Kushboo.

The baby’s mother had left her at a primary school to sleep while she did some chores but when she returned Kushboo was gone.

The villagers, who reportedly knew about Amarjeet’s past crimes, confronted him about the baby’s disappearance.

He claimed: “He said he took the children to the fields and hit them with a stone and killed them. He has been charged with murder.”

The police said that while the boy was being questioned, he just smiled and asked for biscuits.

The child was evaluated by professionals, and found to be suffering from “conduct disorder”.

Culture / 2500-year-old Intact & Sealed Coffins Discovered In Egypt (pictures) by Ndifreke31(m): 7:54am On Oct 06, 2020
An Egyptian archaeological mission has discovered a large collection of 2,500-year-old sealed sarcophagi and figurines at the Saqqara Necropolis in Giza.
Opening one of the ornately decorated sarcophagi for the first time before assembled media, the team revealed mummified remains wrapped in burial cloth that bore hieroglyphic inscriptions in bright colours.

The dramatic find was unearthed south of Cairo in the sprawling burial ground of Saqqara, the necropolis of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. On the site – around 10 miles south-east of the Pyramids of Giza – 59 anthropoid painted coffins have been discovered so far. Around 40 were displayed to the press. The majority of coffins housed mummified remains which initial research suggests would have been priests, top officials and elites in ancient Egyptian society.

All of whom would have likely been subject to ancient Egypt’s complex burial rituals after they died, including having their brains removed with an iron hook.

The discovery was announced on Friday by Egypt’s Minister of Antiquities and Tourism, Dr. Khaled El-Enany. ‘Today I can say most of the discoveries have been made by Egyptian teams on Egyptian soil. This is something I am immensely proud of,’ El-Enany said.

He said the mission had started re-excavating the site two months ago, and uncovered a burial shaft 36 feet deep. Inside, they found 13 intact coffins. The team continued their excavations, discovering two more shafts – 32 and 39 feet deep – also filled with coffins.

All the coffins discovered so far are in good condition and bear their original colours.

‘My colleagues in the Supreme Council of Antiquities discovered burial shafts filled with wooden, sealed and intact coffins,’ El-Enany said.

‘I am really impressed that Covid-19 did not stop them from digging to unveil more mystery and secrets about our great civilisation.’

The minister said that the coffins would be transported to the Grand Egyptian Museum to be displayed to the public.

Secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri said initial studies found the coffins belong to 26th Dynasty priests, top officials, and elites.

There are mummies in the majority of the coffins.

In addition to the coffins, a carved bronze statue of the god Nefertum, inlaid with precious stones, was discovered, as was a collection of 28 statues of Ptah-Soker, the main god of Saqqara Necropolis. Collections of amulets and a ushabti figurine were also found.

The Saqqara necropolis is found south of Cairo and is part of the ancient capital city of Memphis. It is also the site of the colossal rectangular-based step Pyramid of Djoser. Work continues to be carried out to try and work out the exact history of the sarcophagi.

Egypt uses archaeological discoveries as a means to promote tourism, a sector which has been directly affected by travel restrictions put in place in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Politics / Salami Rejects Magu’s Demand To Invite Buhari’s COS, Minister, Ends Probe by Ndifreke31(m): 9:00am On Oct 04, 2020
IgbereTV reports that the Justice Ayo Salami-led Presidential panel probing the suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, has rejected a request by Magu to invite the President’s Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari; the Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi; and Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas.
Others who were supposed to appear before the panel include- a former Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Lamorde; the Director General of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, Modibbo Hamman-Tukur; EFCC’s Acting Director, Directorate of Asset Forfeiture and Recovery Management, Mr Aliyu Yusuf; an EFCC lawyer, Bala Sanga; and a former EFCC official, Isa Dongoyaro.

The Salami-led panel had drafted a subpoena addressed to the naval chief, minister and others to appear.

However, it was learnt that the panel made a U-turn and decided not to invite them anymore following the refusal of the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), to honour a summons.

A lawyer to Magu, Mr. Tosin Ojaomo, said the suspended EFCC boss did not have a chance to properly defend himself since the panel rejected his appeal to invite those who would have been able to explain the allegations against him.

Ojaomo said the panel had closed its probe and was putting together its report which it would soon submit to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

The lawyer said, “Justice Salami refused to subpoena those we asked him to serve. He had drafted subpoenas to the chief of naval staff, minister of defence, chief of staff to the President, the DG NFIU, the AGF and Lamorde.

“I am sure he refused to issue the subpoenas because of the way the AGF refused to come forward. So, we have closed our defence and I am sure the report would be submitted anytime from now.

“Magu was forced to defend himself without any witness of his coming forward. But no one accused Magu of stealing. In fact, those who have pending cases in court only asked that the charges filed against them be withdrawn.”

The panel, which sat for three months, summoned at least 50 persons, including activist, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN); General Overseer, Divine Hand of God Prophetic Ministry, Prophet Emmanuel Omale; senior advocate, Godwin Obla; Managing Director of First City Monument Bank, Adam Nuru; as well as several government officials.

Buhari had while inaugurating the seven-man panel on July 3, 2020, given it 45 days to round off its activities and submit its report.

The President listed the seven members of the panel to include Salami (North-Central); Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Michael Ogbezi (South-South); a representative of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Muhammad Babadoko (North-Central); and Hassan Abdullahi from the Department of State Services (North-Central).

Others are Muhammad Shamsudeen from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (North-West), Douglas Egweme from the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (South-East) and Kazeem Atitebi (South-West), who serves as the secretary.

The President subsequently gave the panel an additional six weeks to conclude its probe.

Magu was detained for 10 days when the panel began sitting but was later released.

He was suspended from office along with over 12 other senior officials of the commission, including the EFCC Secretary, Ola Olukoyede.

The suspended EFCC boss was accused of being unable to account for the interest that accrued to over N500bn in recovered funds.

He was also said to have purchased a house in Dubai for N573m through his pastor, who operates an account with FCMB.

The bank later issued an apology, claiming that the N573m was credited to the bank account of the pastor in error and that the error was not discovered for over four years.
