Ikwerre is now Igbo, na the samething we see with Nzegwu Anioma Coup.

First they are not igbo but wen something happen, na the same people campaigning that they are not igbo will be the first to shout Igbo at the top of their voice from the roof top.

Though this story is still an attempt to start fight trouble between Igbo and Ijaw becos of the Biafra movement.

I have reason to believe it is a fake news.

Afonja are trying very hard to start a fight between the Igbo and Ijaw.

They know the two have very good record of peaceful coexistence.

Let them keep writing igbo in every story.

It is Igbo that is the killer.

3. The above examples shed light on the issue at hand concerning Ikwerre, as well as Ukwuani, Ika, and some other languages spoken in Rivers State. These languages are Igboid but they cannot be called dialects of Igbo because they have evolved over the years to be unintelligible to Igbo speakers. Their cultures have also evolved to be quite distinct from mainstream Igbo culture and they also have their own dialects.

So to answer your question: Igbo actually has dialects, as earlier mentioned, such as Ngwa, Owerre, Enuani, Ezza, etc. However, some languages are simply derivatives of Igbo, and nothing more. Ikwerre falls within the latter. This is the status quo in current linguistic studies on Ikwerre.
Ukwuani is spoken in Anambra by Onitsha and Ogbaru. Ika follows from Ukwuani directll from the East. Igbo is very different. The languagess u mentioned as examples are dialect.

If u want derivates try Ekpeye.
PoliticsRe: Port Harcourt Is Not Part Of Igbo Land. by Ndiofe: 11:08pm On May 09, 2017
fratermathy:
You are getting it wrong.

There is a difference between dialects and language family. Igbo has many dialects such as Ngwa, Aro, Enuani, Owerre, Bende, Ezza, Wawa, etc. Yoruba also has various dialects like Ekiti, Ijebu, Awori, Igbomina, Ilaje, etc.

However, there are some languages that are not regarded as dialects but simply a member of a specific language family either as a derivative or by other linguistic or socio-cultural factors. In Nigeria, many languages are derived from others but these new languages have taken different shapes that they cannot be called dialects anymore. Apart from the linguistic factor, socio-cultural factors also play important roles. Speakers of certain derivative languages can take a distinct ethnic identity from its proto-linguistic ethnic group and thus, seizes to be a dialect.

Let me demonstrate what I have said:
1. Itsekiri is a Yoruboid language but not a dialect of Yoruba because the Itsekiri language has taken new linguistic forms, mostly from Bini, Urhobo and Ijaw. Apart from the linguistic exclusiveness ushered by these new forms, Itsekiri speakers have also taken a distinct identity from Yoruba, as evident in their way of life. This explanation goes for the Igala as well.

2. Urhobo, Isoko, Erhowa, Okpe, Epie-Atissa, Ishan, Afenmai, Etsako, Degema, etc, are regarded as Edoid languages. This means they all originate from a proto-Edoid language. However, they have evolved in isolation over the years, so much that they are mutually unintelligible to their speakers. They have also had new forms which were ushered by the languages they came in contact with. Culturally, they are all distinct. They cannot, thus, be said to be dialects of Edo but members of the Edoid language family. Each of these languages even has its own dialects as proof of its distinctive shape.

There is a big difference between Edo and Igbo cases.

Igbo people understand Ikwerre and Ikwerre understand igbo. The key difference is the pronunciation sound for the same word. Ikwere is an igbo dialect.

There are more complicated form of igbo dialect than Ikwere in Ebonyi, but they will tell u that they are igbo.

A classic example of wat u are trying to explain is applicable to Ekpeye. Igbo people cannot understand Ekpeye but it is an Igboid language.

So Ekpeye will fit in with ur example number 2. Ekpeye principal dialects are Ako, Upata, Ubie, and Igbuduya

Both Koniju and Tuboniju are IJAWS but Tuboniji also consist of ADOPTED slaves that we took as ours especially their women.

A slave has been adopted, if he/she wants to return to his/her place, the option is to return back. No slave is greater than the sons and daughters of the soil.

Ijaws are magnanimous and we have human dignity, hence we see adoptees as our own.

No adopted child can Carry the fortunes of the Foster parents to that of the biological parents. it is never done anywhere. When you are adopted you take the identity of the one that adopt you else you return to where you were picked.

As for PH, I have no business discussing it more than what I already posted.

Meanwhile, stop mentioning me please, I don't appreciate your mentions.

Thanks
Dont be offensive. Try to tell urself the truth.

Tuboniji are igbos. That is y igbo is widely spoken in Okirika till date.

TonyeBarcanista:
The status of Portharcourt is not what is up for contest.

Though the Okrika clan of Ijaw nation (which I belong to) own the Southern part of the city without dispute, there is still agitation that the entire PH belongs to Okrika, including the section occupied by Diobu people of Ikwerre, which was allegedly called "Igweocha". That however is a contest between the Ikwerre and Okrika clan of Ijaw nation.

Notwithstanding, it is out of place and inappropriate for anyone to think it is an Igbo city or any other tribe. Specifically, the Southern part is never up for contest.

It is funny however that the Okrikas are Ijaws, while the Ikwerre that is the other Party in the dispute claim to be a distinct group. I am not aware that the Igbos are laying claim, whether formally or otherwise to the city, except their claim is through the Ikwerre angle, which is the business between the Ikwerre and the Igbo.

lt is funny that indigenous people of the city aren't killing themselves over the subject but sadly a man who was supposed to be a respected professor, who isn't even a native of Rivers state took it upon himself to rekindle another round of social media controversy.

I can't help but comment on this for record sake.

Whatever the case, the lands were there before our birth, they will remain where they are after our death. Why should we kill ourselves?
Okirika are divided, into the koniju and the tuboniju... One group are farmers who descended from the Igbo while the other are fishermen who descended from the Rukwo.
Barcanista himself has said it sometimes ago that he's a descendant of the fishermen which makes him a proud Rukwo.

I am an advocate that if Igweocha was to expand with development Okirika should be added. That way Rukwo can really be stake holders with the Ikwere.

For now the Rukwo in Igweocha are migrant like igbo to Lagos. Igweocha is Ikwere land and the Ikwere are Igbos.

There was never a south-south it is just a geo POLITICAL zone and not a GEOGRAPHICAL region.
In as much as i prefer biafra without d so called South south, truth must still be told
This is the first map of Nigeria and the only valid map of Nigeria.

If we were to divide Nigeria, the south clearly was divided by the British.
