Sports / Frank Onyeka Aims For AFCON 2023 Success With Nigeria’s Super Eagles by Nehemiah459(m): 12:37pm On Dec 29, 2023
Nigerian football star Frank Onyeka is gearing up for his second appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations, eager to represent the Super Eagles once again at the 2023 tournament. The 25-year-old midfielder, who currently plays for Brentford, is poised to be a crucial inclusion in Nigeria’s squad for the prestigious competition.

Onyeka first graced the AFCON stage during the 2021 edition held in Cameroon. Despite the Super Eagles’ strong performance, their journey came to an end in the Round of 16, marked by a 1-0 defeat to the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia. Undeterred by this setback, Onyeka is resolute in his desire to make a significant impact in the upcoming tournament.

Expressing his passion for representing his country on the international stage, Onyeka conveyed his deep sense of pride in wearing the iconic green and white Super Eagles jersey. In an interview with BBC Sport Africa, he shared, “I’ll always want to represent my country on the big stage. It’s an honor to wear the green and white shirt, so it’s something that I have to do.”

Reflecting on his journey from playing football in the streets of Nigeria to showcasing his skills at the AFCON, Onyeka expressed his excitement: “It is a dream come true, because after watching Afcon legends in past years, now you’re going to be part of the team. I’m looking forward to it so much.”

Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, has been drawn into Group A for the tournament. They are set to face strong competition from hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau as they strive to make a mark on the grand stage of African football. As the anticipation builds for the AFCON 2023, Frank Onyeka stands ready to play a pivotal role in his team’s quest for glory.

Politics / Labour Party Leadership Crisis: Apapa Denies Receiving N500m, Blames Peter Obi by Nehemiah459(m): 9:20am On May 18, 2023
The factional National Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr. Lamidi Apapa, has denied claims that he received N500 million to sabotage the outcome of the party’s case at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC). Apapa addressed the press after he narrowly escaped a mob attack by angry youths at the PEPC in Abuja on Wednesday.

Apapa also called on Mr. Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate during the Feb. 25 Presidential Election, to intervene in the leadership tussle of the party objectively. He added that an unbiased and objective approach from Obi could help in resolving the crisis in the party’s leadership.

Apapa expressed disappointment over the crisis at the PEPC in the presence of Peter Obi, describing it as a disgraceful act and a test to his leadership quality. According to Apapa, the crisis would have been averted if Obi had respected the order of the FCT High Court. The court had directed Julius Abure and three others to cease parading themselves as national officers of the party.

Explaining the origin of the dispute, Apapa stated that after the court order was issued, he was unanimously chosen to act as the party’s chairman. He maintained that despite the court order, Obi accorded respect to Abure, whose claim to being a national officer was challenged by the court. Apapa implored Obi to be open-minded and neutral to end the impasse.

The press conference was attended by the Deputy National Chairman of the Party in the North, Mr. Mike Auta, the National Publicity Secretary, Olufemi Arabambi, and the Acting Women Leader, Rukkayat Salihu. As the leadership crisis continues to unfold in the Labour Party, observers are keenly watching to see how the party can resolve their differences and unify to become a formidable force in Nigerian politics.

Foreign Affairs / Former Mexican Mayor Sentenced To 92 Years In Prison For Kidnapping by Nehemiah459(m): 4:22am On May 18, 2023
In what is being hailed as a victory for justice, a court in Mexico has sentenced a former mayor, Jose Luis Abarca, to 92 years in prison for his involvement in the kidnapping of six civil society leaders in 2013. The court also imposed a fine of 920,700 pesos (approximately $52,000 USD) on Abarca for his role in the abductions that occurred in the southern state of Guerrero, in the city of Iguala.

One of the six victims, Arturo Hernandez Cardona, an agricultural leader, was later found dead. Abarca is also implicated in Mexico’s infamous 2014 human rights atrocity, the disappearance of 43 students during his tenure as mayor of Iguala. He was ultimately arrested that same year and is currently held in a prison in central Mexico.

The students – who had commandeered buses to attend a protest in Mexico City – were taken into custody by corrupt police officers and delivered to a drug cartel. While the fate of the students remains contested, there is evidence to suggest that cartel members targeted them because they had unknowingly taken a bus containing drugs.

Last year, a commission appointed by the government and charged with examining the students’ case branded it a “state crime,” implicating individuals from various institutions, and bringing some form of closure to one of Mexico’s most baffling and disturbing crimes.

This verdict marks a momentous victory for the relatives of the victims, who have spent years struggling with the trauma of the abductions. The sentencing of a high-ranking public official highlights the resolve of the Mexican government to combat corruption and hold those in positions of power accountable for their crimes.

Business / NLC Embarks On An Indefinite Strike by Nehemiah459(m): 8:47pm On May 09, 2023
The Abia State workforce, on Tuesday, shut down as workers under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress embarked on an indefinite strike.

The indefinite strike that started at midnight Tuesday was largely obeyed by the state workers, leading to state activities being paralyzed, as most workers stayed away from their workplaces.

Offices like the School of Nursing Amachara, the Abia State House of Assembly, the Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Head of Service and Secretary to the State Government, the Abia State Planning Commission and the Ministry of Agriculture, among others, were under lock and key with the NLC strike enforcement team present to ensure compliance.

The gates to Abia State Primary Healthcare Office and Civil Service Commission were locked, with only security staff seen inside the compounds, while the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia radio station continuously announced “We would be offering skeletal services today”.

In the Umuahia area, the enforcement team was led by NLC Chairman, Paschal Iheme Nweke, as banners and flags were placed on some government offices.

Addressing journalists at Library Avenue, directly opposite the gates of the state SSG and Head of Service, Nweke emphasised that workers would remain at home until they received a credit alert for their salaries.

“We are on strike for non-payment of salaries, pensions, leave allowances and minimum wage.

“We met with the state government and had some agreement, but they have not done anything.

“They are still receiving allocations, so they should pay us. The strike is total.

“We can’t stop this strike until we start getting our alerts,” the NLC boss said, regretting that workers in some state parastatals and agencies and pensioners were being owed huge amounts of money in arrears

The effect of the strike was felt by the Abia Government House as the scheduled recognition of news traditional rulers could not hold and at the State House of Assembly, sitting and proceedings of the day by the embattled Speaker could not hold.

Aba was not left out in the strike action as state workers also obeyed the NLC order and stayed at home.

Education / JAMB Fixes New Date For 2023 UTME by Nehemiah459(m): 3:01pm On Apr 09, 2023

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has announced a new date for the commencement of the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations.

The board disclosed this in a statement signed by its Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin, in Abuja on Sunday.

Benjamin said the UTME which was earlier scheduled to commence on April 29, would now start on April 25, 2023.

He also said the board would hold its rescheduled mock-UTME on April 18, 2023.

”JAMB had earlier conducted its 2023 Mock-UTME on Thursday, March 30, in 725 centres across the country.

”However, the exercise ran into some technical hitches in some centres, thereby denying some candidates the opportunity to sit for the examination.

”The board’s mock examination was designed for the purpose of testing its preparedness and that of its partners for the UTME as well as give prospective candidates the opportunity to have hands-on experience of the CBT test environment.

”It is, therefore, in order to give those candidates, who were unable to sit for the examination owing to no fault of theirs, the opportunity to take the examination that the mock examination had been rescheduled to hold on Tuesday, April 18,” he said.

He said candidates who were present and screened for the examination but could not sit for it had been rescheduled to retake the mock examination on April 18.

Benjamin, therefore, said the result of the candidates who successfully took the mock examination on March 30, had been released.

He also said the board had brought forward the conduct of its 2023 UTME which was earlier scheduled to hold from Saturday, April 29, to Tuesday, April 25.

He said the adjustment in the date of the UTME was to accommodate some other major and critical national assignments.

”By so doing, the board hopes that no citizen will be denied the opportunity of exercising their civic responsibilities.

”It should be noted that the board does not have the liberty of shifting forward its examination as other public examinations are billed to commence their exercises in the early part of May 2023.

“Yet another factor is the need to accommodate those institutions with stable academic calendar to resume as scheduled,” he added.

He said the board would continue to partner with relevant agencies of government to ensure that its candidates got the best.

He said the board also solicited the understanding of all as it delivered on its critical mandate.

Crime / We Make N35,000 Daily, Fake LASTMA Officer Confesses by Nehemiah459(m): 5:39pm On Mar 26, 2023
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has arrested a suspected serial fake traffic officer impersonating the agency.

The suspect, Omotutu Bamidele, 55, was nabbed around the Ikoyi area of the state.

According to LASTMA, in a statement on Sunday, the suspect, who hailed from ‘Atijere Town’ in Ondo State, confessed that he and his colleagues still at large were making an average of N35,000 from extortion acts on daily basis.

He confessed to have been impersonating the agency with a reflective jacket and extorting money from motorists particularly private car owners/drivers in some areas across the state.

According to LASTMA, the suspect said, “Any motorist particularly private car owners I caught dropping someone at any undesignated bus stop paid between N15,000 to N20,000, while those caught for driving against traffic (One-way) paid a minimum of N35,000.”

The director, Public Affairs Department of LASTMA, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, quoted the General Manager, Mr. Bolaji Oreagba, to have confirmed that the suspect was nabbed at Olu Holloway Road by Alfred Rewane area of Ikoyi by men of the agency’s Monitoring/Surveillance team, led by Mr. Ashafa Moyosore (Zonal Head).

Oreagba said the agency carried out special monitoring/Surveillance operations about the suspect and got him arrested in response to complaints from the motoring public (Obinna Kingsley and Adewusi Adebola) via LASTMA hotlines/social media handles.

He said, “Investigation conducted revealed that the arrested suspect has been extorting huge sum of money from motorists for various traffic offences ranging from seat-belt, obstructions, illegal over-taking and One-way at different locations around the Lagos Island.

“It is disheartening getting complaints from road users particularly motorists on activities of these unscrupulous elements impersonating and extorting money from them.”

LASTMA boss, therefore, urged the general public to be wary of those fake traffic officers stating that the agency operates a cashless policy as any violators apprehended are charged to court with a ‘Referral Notice’ issued to them.

“Let me warn the motoring public to desist from inducing traffic officers in any form as both the giver and taker are liable before the law,” Oregaba said.

Politics / UK Govt Slams Fani-kayode Over Comments, Reveals 10 People On Visa Ban Watchlist by Nehemiah459(m): 4:46pm On Mar 26, 2023
The United Kingdom has hit out at a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Femi Fani-Kayode, over controversial comments made during the electoral season.

In an interview with Nigeria Info FM on Sunday, the British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ben Llewellyn-Jones, faulted the APC presidential campaign council’s director of new media, for making derogatory remarks.

Last month, Fani-Kayode was invited for questioning by the Department of State Services (DSS), for claiming that the presidential flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, had a meeting with army general’s before the elections.

“Yes, let’s be specific, there were some people, like Femi Fani-Kayode, what is he saying and why is he saying it? I don’t understand.

“It is wrong from my perspective that he will speak on behalf of a party and that party does not distance itself from him and say stop doing that. It is wrong to say that,” Llewellyn-Jones said.

Llewellyn-Jones has reiterated the fact that the UK government will issue visa bans to people undermining democracy.

According to him, there are about 10 persons already on the watchlist.

“We have a list, we are working through our list but we don’t publish those names. I know people say we should, but we have laws, and the law prevents us from doing that.

“At the moment the list is between 5 and 10 and it is growing,” he added.

The Media Director of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga, has issued a warning to those describing his principal as a drug dealer.

Onanuga warned that the days of those using some hashtags to blast Tinubu are numbered.
He said those behind the hashtags would face the wrath of God over malicious tweets against Tinubu.

Prior to the presidential election, Tinubu was accused of being a drug dealer when he was in the United States, US.

Some Nigerians had called for his arrest and a stop from participating in the presidential campaign.

Following his victory, some Nigerians have been calling for his arrest and imprisonment.
Responding, Onanuga tweeted:
“All those sons of b*tches tweeting the hashtags #TinubuTheDrugDealer #TinubuForPrison, your days are numbered.

“One day, you will face the wrath of the law and God for tweeting malicious falsehood about Nigeria’s President-Elect.”

Politics / Senator Aduda Unveils N2.8bn Projects by Nehemiah459(m): 2:31pm On Mar 26, 2023
Senate minority leader, Philip Aduda (PDP-FCT), has unveiled road projects worth N2.8 billion across the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

The inspection, which was done by Aduda at the weekend, was for series projects executed across various wards in Bwari Area Council and Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC.

Some of the projects he inspected were N1.4 billion Global Suite Road in Sabon Gari Area of Bwari with distance coverage of 6 Km.

He also inspected N1.4 billion road project in Nyanya, which passes in front of Divisional Police Headquarters, Area F and other landmarks in the area.

Other projects inspected by the lawmaker were the 1.5 km Government Secondary School Kuduru road with street light, expansive multipurpose Town Hall situated in Kuduru ward in Bwari Area Council.

Also inspected was the 2.2 km internal road project in Gbazango, Kubwa ward and the age- long impassable Byhazin Across road, Kubwa.

Mr Aduda said that unveiling the projects after election was done for posterity and as a legacy to bequeath for the people of FCT.

He said: “I did it for posterity and to knock off the argument or remarks by some people that I didn’t do anything within the last 20 years as a representative of FCT residents at the National Assembly.

“I want to be remembered for being very modest about some of my achievements which is infrastructural development.

“I have also realised that sometimes, if you don’t say what you are doing, people will wonder what you have done and they will wonder and people will not know except the immediate benefiting communities.

See also Naira scarcity to ease as banks open today, Sunday

“What I have done is to take you round the projects I have done within the past few years and some people will wonder that within the past 20 years what have you been able to do.

“The more you stay as a legislator, the more you have opportunities to be able to attract so many things that are developmental to your people.

“For me, the more a person gets reelected into the National Assembly, the more he or she garners experience and the needed contacts for facilitation of development-driven projects to his or her constituency as I have done for the people of FCT within the last 20 years.”

Some of the residents, however, expressed sadness over the outcome of the just-concluded election where the candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Ireti Kingibe defeated Mr Aduda to clinch the FCT senatorial seat.

They said that they would support Mr Aduda in order to reclaim his mandate, which they claimed the election was marred by irregularities.

According to one of the residents, Dauda Babalola, the infrastructural development of Jikwoyi in the FCT by Aduda is unequalled.

“We pray that the Election Petition Tribunal does the right thing for the return of Sen. Aduda.”

Similarly, chief imam of Pipeline Mosque in Gbazango, Kubwa Ward, Kassim Abdallah urged the senator not to despair over the outcome of the election, saying that the Almighty God would continue to grant him the grace to serve the people and communities alike.

“For us in this area, you are a worthy ambassador of the masses and downtrodden in government.

“The result of this Gbazango Pipeline road you constructed will surely manifest success for you in all your endeavours,” he said.
