That's possibly cos you have synced your contacts with Gmail or some other cloud services. Unsync, delete the cloud backups and the ones on your phone.
Before doing all that, don't forget to create a new backup of your contacts for you to fall back to.

Let's guess. You perhaps spent much time outdoors today and phone was set on auto brightness. If that's the case, it's expected because auto brightness will push the screen brightness to the maximum, which results to huge battery drain. Assuming you actually went out for an occasion in a location with poor network reception or fluctuating internet connection, then the situation becomes even worse.
