Entertainment / Life In Fela Kuti's Shrine: The Untold Story - Naija Bliss by Netnews: 7:16pm On Mar 18, 2013
For the fifty-eight years he lived on earth, the Fela Kuti mystique kept the world on the edge of their seats. There was always something out of the ordinary in everything he did. From the rebel streak in him, which was constantly dramatised, to the zombifying lyrics in his music, which constantly gave successive Nigerian military governments the jitters, and, of course, his harem of wives, which exaggerated his machismo, Fela Kuti symbolized a cat with nine lives, and, certainly, a cat that touched many lives in Nigeria and beyond.

If you think you have heard everything about the Afrobeat maestro, who, contrary to his parents’ advice for him to study medicine in London, chose to study music at the Trinity College of Music, you could just be like a nitwit whose idea of scientific grandeur is only limited to the gigantic Egyptian pyramid.
Needless to say, you need to read the latest book on Fela, Kalakuta Diaries, written by his erstwhile PRO, Uwa Erhabor, presented to the public early this week at the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs, Lagos.
Unlike other books on Fela that has dwelled on his stage performances, interpretation of his lyrics and political activism, Kalakuta Diaries recounts the untold story of life in Fela’s Kalakuta Republic, his symbolic free world, where those in military fatigue weren’t welcome and even some sane citizens could be charged for jaywalking. Kalakuta Diaries tells stories of the seamy side of life in Fela’s iconoclastic home and lot more.
z
It could be outlawed elsewhere, but smoking of weeds wasn’t in his republic – of course he prefers to call it “African grass” – and if you couldn’t charge cows and goats for grazing on grass, why should you charge Fela for feasting on nature’s grassy environment?
That was his contention, but the Nigerian government didn’t just buy into his grassy defence. Marijuana has been outlawed in Nigeria for many decades, and Fela wasn’t to be treated like a scared cow. On many occasions, the minions of the law were after the Afrobeat king, and the lead-up to his arrest and arraignment in court was always melodramatic.

A fan dressed in a full Manchester City kit tried to join the team for a warm-up session Saturday before the defending Premier League champion’s away game at Everton.

The man was escorted away by security staff, but only after he ran along the touchline as the team warmed up at Goodison Park and then attempted to join the players on the pitch.

The man’s identity was not made public. Everton says the man, who the club believes is from London, was arrested for pitch encroachment.

Last year’s game between the two teams was held up when a man ran onto the field and handcuffed himself to a goalpost.

Entertainment / ''There’ll Be More Deaths In Nollywood Unless…'' - Cleric by Netnews: 2:00pm On Mar 16, 2013
Following recent spate of deaths in the Nigerian movie industry, a cleric who claimed to have seen a vision, Evangelist Emeka Omenka had warned media practitioners as well as members of the entertainment industry generally to intensify their prayers to avert further untimely deaths of very important Nollywood personalities.

According to the Abia State-born cleric, danger still looms in the industry except the practitioners heed this urgent clarion call for fervent prayers to avert further deaths in the fast emerging entertainment industry in the country, noting that there is an evil wind blowing through the industry.

He maintained that he saw a vision in 2001 that there would be a series of deaths in the Nigerian movie industry of Nigerians especially, if members fail to pray, stating that recent events in that sector had evidently shown that the practitioners didn’t heed the call to pray.

Omenka insisted that he is neither a prophet nor an apostle, adding “God has a solution to the spate of deaths in the movie industry. I have seen what is happening in the movie industry since 2001 and I feel enough is enough of deaths of movie practitioners in the country.”

He maintained that there is a road that must closed to avert further deaths in the industry, stating that he had studied the industry in other countries of the world and found out that the spate of deaths in Nigeria is unusual and something must be done quickly to stem the tide.

“I saw a female member of the industry lying in state, but I am confident that if we pray fervently we can put an end to the deaths,” said the general overseer of the Wonder Working God Ministry in Akowonjo, Lagos.

Nairaland / General / Google Unveils Talking Shoes (PHOTOS, VIDEO) by Netnews: 7:42pm On Mar 12, 2013
The latest gizmo to come from the Google workshop is designed to keep you connected – even if you’re running away. The tech giant has outfitted a pair of unassuming ADIDAS shoes with a computer a speaker, as well as an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a pressure sensor.

While making movements, the shoe can actually talk to the person wearing them.

The device made its debut late last week during the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas.

Aman Govil, lead of the advertising arts team, told ABC News: “The talking shoe is an experiment in how you can use connected objects to tell stories on the Web today.”

The shoe utilizes Bluetooth technology to connect itself to the internet, and can provide location and directions using Google’s mapping app.

The computer also enables the shoe to react based on the wearer’s movements, or lack thereof.

If you’re sitting on a park bench, the shoe may inform you: “This is super boring.”

It’s a part of the Art Copy & Code project, which has been designed to deliver a new frontier of marketing and advertising.

Govil told ABC: “If you put what the shoe knows through an algorithmic logic engine, it can translate it into copy.

“Now if you give that copy to an interesting copy writer, you could give the shoe personality. One shoe could be the trash-talking shoe.”

The possibilities are endless, but the shoes can be worn by favorite athletes and let their Twitter followers know how fast they’re going during a particular sporting event, for example.

But Google claims that it has no plans yet to develop the fancy footwear into a shoe empire.

Govil told ABC: “We’re not getting into the shoe business. We are in the social network and advertising business.”

And Google is not the first company to get involved in the footwear industry.

In January, Apple announced that it was developing an athletic shoe that would let its owner know when its time to buy a new pair.

The alert could come in the form of a flashing light or beep but would also incorporate a wireless interface, presumably connecting to an iPhone or iPad.

Celebrities / 2face Publicly Promises To Satisfy Annie In Bed by Netnews: 2:48pm On Mar 12, 2013

In the presence of top politicians like Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom State governor) and Florence Ita Giwa, 2Face was asked to touch his Joystick and make a promise to satisfy their daughter. The Idoma-born singer joyfully did.

As Esit Urua custom demands, the hometown of Annie, 2Face was asked to raise his right hand to the sky and touch his Joystick.

This reportedly took place at the field of Apostolic High School, Esit Urua, where the wedding was held.

He was then asked if he still has this joystick intact after he touched it which he answered in the affirmative. The next question was if 2Face will satisfy her, as usual of 2Face, he jokingly answered yes.

Celebrities / Women Are My Temptation – Comedian, Bovi Confesses by Netnews: 2:36pm On Mar 12, 2013
Mention his name to his fans and followers of the Nigerian stand-up comedy and you’d be greeted by a knowing smile.

Bovi (real name Ugboma Bovi) is a comedian who doles out original wisecracks of intellectual flavour. The Delta State-born “Comedian of the Federal Republic” has carved a niche for himself and his blossoming career as a man of inimitable comic sense.

In this brief chat, Bovi talks about his life – his life as a comedian and as a family man and the roads ahead of him.

Excerpts

What is Bovi up to lately?
It has been a busy year for me. I have been planning for many things. Unlike last year that started with a rush of jobs, this year, I’ve had time to plan. My maiden standup comedy show is around the corner; that’s what’s been taking my time.

There are lots of shows billed for the first quarter of the year. How is yours going to be unique?
I’m not aiming to be different from others. I’m aiming to stage a good show and have a good performance. I’m too soaked in preparations to be checking how others are coming up.

Aside comedy, who is Bovi?
I really have a problem talking about myself. I’d say Bovi is an entertainer with his hands in different pies. I’m from Delta State and I come from an average family. I’m just a simple man who likes the privacy that he’s lost. Shy, reserved and observant, that is me.

Lost your privacy, how do you mean?
By being in the public eye. I’m the let’s-take-a-stroll kind of guy. The buka guy. But all that is almost impossible now.

If truly you are shy, how do you overcome stage fright?
Entertaining people is what I was born to do. Stage fright happens to everybody. It’s who turns it to positive energy that is different from the others.

How do you cope with the challenges of being a comedian, a producer and an actor?
It’s been smooth so far. My timetable is well spread out. I’d rather be choked with doing three or more things rather than doing nothing.

How would you describe the industry, compared to 10 years ago?
Ten years ago, I was still in the university. From the moment I came into the industry which is in 2004, I’ll say it has improved. Everything boils down to structure. Right now everything is like a jungle governed by the rule of survival of the fittest.

You often travel from state to state, how have you been coping with family and business at the same time?
It’s easy because my job is what I love doing. When I travel, it’s not longer than two days at most. And when I’m home, I’m home.

How long have you been in the comedy industry?
Professionally, it’s four years. My first sitcom, Extended Family, came out in 2007 and it was a monster hit amongst TV audience. Measuring success is relative. All I can say for me is that there has been a steady but bumpy rise and I’m still on the ascension.

What gives you inspiration?
God Almighty – through Him I have discovered the wonder of books. I also draw inspiration from events – not the events that you see. I like to look beyond the surface. CNN calls it the back story: the side that’s never really heard. It has helped my story-telling skills.

What was your parents’positions when you wanted to go into the sitcom business?
I only had issues with my parents when I chose to study Theatre Art. But once I graduated and came to Lagos, it’s been support and encouragement all the way. They let me take my own risks.

Who is your role model?
I can’t peg that down to one person. However, there are industry players I’ve admired over the years. I love Tupac Shakur. I could relate with his story; almost identical with some areas of my life.

Richard Mofe-Damijo trained me while working as his PA between 2004 and 2006. Basket Mouth, I look up to him artistically and when I reached out to him, he taught me how to handle the business angle of my talent, and he’s been a true friend. There are a whole lot more others I admire but that will take a whole day to list.

Have you ever been hurt by any negative reports in the media.
Not really, but I’ve frowned at a few.

What is your biggest career moment so far?
To be honest, none. I’m happy when I rock a show. I’m happy when I get paid handsomely. But I don’t dwell on the feeling because if my next show is bad, I’d be bothered about those seeing me for the first time. I hate to disappoint. And career wise, I think I’m still only at the starting blocks.

How much was your first earning as a comedian?
The first money was no money. I did several shows without getting paid but I wasn’t bothered because I needed the exposure. And even when I started getting paid, the money wasn’t my source of joy. It was the good outing. I really don’t remember the exact figures. But I was happy.?

Entertainment / “Nigerians Really Irritate Me On Facebook” – Kemi Olunloyo by Netnews: 8:30pm On Mar 11, 2013
“Why Do Yoruba People Have Low Facebook Name Self Esteem?”

Ex Oyo State Governor’s Daughter, Omololu Olunloyo Asks. She has created a lot of buzz again because of her write up which you’ll find below, and the Yorubas are yet to stop cursing her and calling her all sorts of names.

She wrote; Nigerians really irritate me on Facebook when they alter their names into these eyesore names. As a member of the Community standards team at Facebook, u are not allowed a fake name.

Many Nigerians in the Yoruba tribe where I am from, disgustingly alter the spellings of their names to horrible proportions. These beautiful African names are defaced due to lack of self esteem. I reported 10 last week on FB and they were told to produce ID before their pages could be re-opened.

They got mad at me. I clearly warned them beforehand. Even ppl with other fake nicknames need to be reported if you see them without a real name. I don’t see this trend in other tribes in Nigeria. #SMH My full name is Olukemi Omololu-Olunloyo Spelled like a eyesore is Holukehmi Hormololoo-Howloonlawyour

Politics / Governor Akpabio Under Fire Over Outrageous Wedding Gifts To Tuface Idibia by Netnews: 3:14pm On Mar 11, 2013
Friday’s presentation of two SUVs to Nigerian hip pop star, TuFace Idibia, and wife, Annie Macaulay, by Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswill Akpabio, at their traditional wedding, has got a lot of Nigerians railing at the profligacy of public officials.

Mr. Akpabio had stunned guests that thronged the Apostolic High School, Esit Urua Community venue, along Eket-Ibeno Road, for the traditional wedding of the celerity couple with the announcement of a donation of two brand new Toyota Prado SUVs to them.

The lucky couple are also to travel in the luxury of the company of 29 delegates from Akwa Ibom to the United Arab Emirate, UAE, courtesy of the governor, who also promised to throw the state’s treasury open to bankroll an all-expense paid trip for the white wedding scheduled for March 23 in Dubai.

The Eket-Ibeno Road, which has remained in a bad state for a long time, is to be fully rehabilitated before the next child dedication ceremony of the couple, the governor said.

Although a couple of loyalists commended the governor, commonly derisively called “the uncommon transformer” in the state, for his reckless spending of state funds, a cross-section of other Nigerians have described the gesture as “misplaced priority”, “wasteful” and “abuse of public trust” in the management of state resources.

Celebrities / We Will Decide Whether To Accept Governor Akpabio’s Gift – 2 Face Idibia by Netnews: 8:16pm On Mar 10, 2013
Award-winning musician, Tuface Idibia, on Sunday said he was yet to decide whether or not to accept the controversial wedding gifts presented to him and his wife on Friday by Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom.

Mr. Akpabio had stunned guests at the wedding of the celebrity couple with the announcement of a donation of two brand new Toyota Prado SUVs to them.

The lucky couple are also to have 29 delegates from Akwa Ibom State attend their star-studded white wedding in Dubai, the United Arab Emirate (UAE), courtesy of the governor. The Eket-Ibeno Road, which has remained in a bad state for a long time, is to be fully rehabilitated before the next child-dedication ceremony of the couple, the governor said.

The gifts have triggered condemnations by some Nigerians who consider them as outrageous and Governor Akpabio as profligate in the management of public funds.

“The governor made a promise, when the cars come, we will decide whether to accept them or not,” the musician said through his spokesperson, Bola Omisore. “We cannot take a decision on the basis of a promise that is yet to be fulfilled.”

Asked to comment on the widespread criticism that has trailed the presentation of the gift to Tuface and his wife, Mr. Omisore said he and his clients were not aware of any criticisms over the cars.

On whether it is appropriate for the musician to accept the gift when the funds used in buying them could be used in solving some of the numerous developmental challenges in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Omisore said, “No comment”

Celebrities / Why I Shaved Off My Dreadlocks – Waconzy by Netnews: 6:59pm On Mar 09, 2013
CEO of DV8 Innovation and popular singer, Waconzy, has explained the reason behind his new looks. It would be recalled that the ‘Celebrate’ singer used to spot dreadlocks before he shaved them off for a low cut.

In this interview culled from PUNCH, Waconzy says: “As a matter of fact, I wasn’t born with dreadlocks. I just promoted that look. The main reason I shaved off the dreads was because I was getting more matured and considering the kind of business I do, I decided to look like a CEO that I am.

“I also considered the fact that I want to get to the next level in life and looking at my friends that are also CEOs, most of them do not sport dreads. I took of my dreads to compliment the Waconzy 2.0 – that it is the new Waconzy, the elevated, rebranded and upgraded Waconzy.”

Explaining that the new him looks better, he adds, “To a reasonable extent, it will reflect in my new songs and my new album, Money Back Guaranteed. The fact that I took of the dreads does not change me, if at all, it makes me look better.”

Entertainment / Maheeda: The Inspiring Story Of Prostitute-turned Gospel Singer by Netnews: 6:36pm On Mar 09, 2013
The story of Caroline Sam, the gospel singer popularly known as Maheeda, is pathetic but inspiring. She was raised as an orphan who hit the street at a tender age of 13 to fend for herself during which time she became a prostitute. In fact, Maheeda could not ascertain her real names because she was raised by foster parents whose name she adopted.

Now, things have changed as Maheeda has turned her life around and eventually became someone to reckon with in the music industry.

The light skinned and slim built mother of one stormed the music scene about two years ago with a single, Oko Yapa that rocked the airwaves. Indeed, Maheeda attracted attention not because her song was extra-ordinary but because of the fact that she appeared weird so much that her almost nude pictures were everywhere, and she was living big.

Recently, the ‘Naija Bad Girl’ as she’s used to be called, turned a new creature by giving her life to Christ, which has made her embrace gospel music as against the secular that shot her into the limelight.

TS Weekend engaged the talented singer in an interview session and she opened up on a number of interesting issues that include her experience as a prostitute, her growing up as an orphan and her marriage to a Whiteman. She also spoke extensively about the turning point of her life as well as her music career.

What is happening to Maheeda?

That depends on what you mean particularly.

Of course, it’s about what you are known for, music?

Yeah, I got born again but I’m still a musician and an entertainer. I have been working on my album and I will be shooting a video soon. That’s it basically.

How many tracks are you looking at and who are you working with on the new album?

I’m working on a good news album, which could also be called, gospel music. I’m working on about 15 tracks and I’m working with Black Jersey in Surulere, Lagos. Also, I’m working with Cupit in FESTAC; I’m working with just two producers. We are looking at about two more tracks and we hope to get through this month or early next month.

Coming from a secular music background, how easy is it to compose gospel tunes?

It’s actually easy, although, in the beginning, it wasn’t because I was confused. There is this mentality that when you are born again, you start working on your outer appearance and not inner while it’s suppose to be inside and then outside. I also started the same way like trying to change my looks and the rest. So, it was indeed kind of difficult composing songs because I did not have enough word of God in me but after then I had to relax for like a year, going to church, listening to pastor Chris, teaching me and I’m still learning so I have enough words to put in my songs, so now I’m ready.

Which of the pastor Chris are you talking about and is it that this pastor attends to you personally from the way you are talking?

I’m talking about Pastor Chris Oyakhilome. I have never seen pastor Chris in person but he’s so real to me like the way we are talking now.

You are still in the music industry despite switching to gospel. What relationship do you have with secular acts you used to mingle with?

We are still friends. I take the males like my brother and the ladies as my sisters. The mothers know my story as an orphan so they are my mum. I was confused before because I’m an orphan but now I have realized that the Christian family is my family. I used to have boy friends, I had like two or three, I used to be the ‘Naija Bad Girl’ but I changed it. I did not push them aside, I pray for them always so they can see the light the way I did. Initially, going to them was difficult because I was not strong but now I go to them, we pray together and share the word.

Did you encounter a particular incident that made you become a born again?

Honestly, it was the same words in the Bible, the same ministration. It was just time because the words that I heard that transformed me were the same words some other people heard. Although, at that time, I was sick and all sorts of tests were conducted on me including HIV, pregnancy and others, and the doctor said I was alright but I was still sick and it was like my head was about to blow up. Later, I went to the church on a weekday and I lied down at the altar and was talking to God that ‘you have taken all my family already and now I am feeling like this’. I left and went to look for my boyfriend but I was still not feeling fine. I was feeling that my life was not normal, that I might die if I did not surrender my life to Christ. And I kept getting the message that ‘you are neither hot nor cold’, I got the message through phone and later in the church, so that was all and I became a new creature.

How easy was it to leave your usual ways?

I must tell you I did not have to pray about it. I just developed the habit of reading my Bible regularly and all those things just stopped without struggling: masturbation, boys getting attracted to me etc. And I have not stopped reading my Bible. In fact, it has become a habit.

You were so daring, posting almost nude pictures of yourself when you came into the industry and people were talking about you. Some felt you must be a prostitute. What would you say to this?

Yeah, I was a prostitute and I’m not ashamed to say it. It’s past tense and we all have our past. The beauty of it is that if Christ has done something in your life and you can’t say it, what is the need? I think I went through all that so I can really speak out. I have been through all that so I can speak, talk to the girls who are still into it and make myself an example. Although, it’s not nice for people to hear and it’s not something to be proud of but for the sake of those prostitutes outsides, I have to say it.

Did you become an orphan by loosing your parents or you never knew them?

I had my mum but she decided to leave me with a neighbour before leaving the house, after seven years she came back and she died, and that is all they know about me

What led you to music in the first place and what made you think you can sing?

I have always loved singing and may be the India films we used to watch as kids also formed part of the interest. I could remember I used to sing when washing plates and doing stuffs and I always wanted to do all that had to do with music and drama in primary school When I was old enough to sponsor myself, I decided to do music, and later, professionally.

Some say you changed your way because you got married?

That is not true. My husband is white and you know white people support their wives. My husband said he didn’t want to be involved in my career and I should also keep his daughter out of it. I was actually praying for it before he said it. My husband has been very supportive for years; he took me to South Africa to shoot my first video. He has spent millions on my career.

How long have you been married and how many kids do you have together?

We have been married for about two years but there’s no child yet. I had my daughter before I met him but he adopted my daughter.

How did you both meet and what is keeping you from having children for him?

I met him in Port Harcourt eleven years ago; we have been together before my music. We are waiting on the Lord for children.

What was your first experience as a prostitute like?

It was strange, even though I can’t really remember (laughs). What I can remember is that it was strange. I was very young but I had to do it. It was scary I think.

At what point did you decide to stop prostitution and what made you stop?

That’s actually a very good question because even after getting married I still have this urge of going out to meet a man. But I felt it should not be so. I’m trying to let people know there is a spirit behind prostitution, if not, why after getting married, I have everything, I live in Lekki, I’m driving a very big car and my husband gives me whatever I want, so why would I still feel like going into prostitution? There is a spirit behind it. I continued prostitution even after getting married. The only thing that changed me was being born again and being delivered.

People think there is no much money in gospel music. What is your reaction?

That is what you think, you think there is no much money in gospel music but I am there and I can tell you there is so much money. I think gospel artistes don’t just brag, it’s the secular ones who come to the television to show stuffs which is not bad but the gospel musicians don’t feel like showing off. But believe me they are making money.

Tell us about your background?I was told my father was from Edo State and my mother, Igbo. My mum named me Caroline but Sam, which is my surname, is the name of my guardian who my mother left me with.

Sports / Angry Soccer Fans Set Egypt Football Association HQ Ablaze by Netnews: 5:59pm On Mar 09, 2013
The headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association were set ablaze on Saturday, minutes after a police officers’ club was torched following sentencing over a deadly football riot last year.

Firefighters were working to put out the fire which spread through the building located in the same neighbourhood as the officers’ club, an AFP reporter said.

Football officials were holding emergency talks in Cairo to discuss upcoming fixtures around the country, state television reported.

The unrest comes hours after a court upheld death sentences for 21 defendants over a deadly football riot in Port Said last year and handed down life sentences to five defendants, with 19 receiving lesser jail terms and another 28 acquitted.

In Cairo, fans of Al-Ahly football club, whose members were killed in the February 2012 stadium riot in Port Said in which 74 people died, had warned police that they would retaliate if the defendants, including nine policemen, were exonerated.

Nollywood bad girl, Cossy Orjiakor, has released her music album. Simply titled Nutty Queen, the album doesn’t even have her popular name, Cossy, on its front jacket.

Nonetheless, it’s one of the rated albums in Alaba presently and it is marketed by one of Alaba’s biggest marketers, Uba Pacific.

Unlike other actresses who went into music, Cossy hasn’t really been bashed by critics.

She has released several singles and some videos over time and there hasn’t been much hullabaloo over her singing ability.
