I was going to type something long on this topic but that won't be necessary as some users have already done it justice. Most parents hit their kids, not to displine them but rather to vent their anger. That is abuse.

I'll just like to add that teachers are not left out in this type of abuse. After having some home squabble with their verbally or physically abusive spouse, they go to their place of work (school) to abuse their students under the guise of discipline. It's even more dampening that some parents encourage this so called discipline by these frustrated teachers. The earlier people start to draw the line between discipline and abuse, the better for our kids and the society at large.

U v a point dere teachers r not left out.dey get dere own for dembody

Nevi12 the problem with Africans is our intolerance. We grow up and live under harsh conditions and end up being impatient and aggressive adults. Most of us live stressful lives and we have a way of transferring our aggression to our kids. Take that woman on the bus for instance, the weather was hot, the poor kid was likely tired and the bus was probably stuffy with so many people in it and had poor ventilation. The woman was probably stressed out herself and didn't have the patience to comfort her kid. That's why I always say if people believe beating their children is absolutely necessary, then they shouldn't beat them in the heat of anger or frustration. They should wait until they've calmed down, then let's see how many lashes you'd gladly give your own kid. The truth is that majority of parents beat their kids immediately they err, when the anger is still hot. Parents shouldn't gain pleasure or satisfaction from beating their kids. The idea is to correct them, not make yourself feel better by letting off some steam. I see cases where couples wait for 10-15 years before having a baby, then they end up mutilating the kid in the name of correction. What's with the desperation to have children, only to mutilate them? It just doesn't make sense. Africans are backward in this regard, because most westerners read books on parenting before they have children, so they know what to expect and how to handle their tempers/emotions. But Africans just feel once you're old enough you should have babies and 'figure the rest out' along the way. This is wrong. If you must have children, then you must be prepared psychologically and emotionally. learn to be patient/long suffering. Of course I'm not saying its good to spoil children, its possible to be firm without being savage. If your kid isn't old enough to be reasoned with, then that child should not be held accountable for his actions. If the child is however old enough to know right from wrong and despite how firm the parent is , they still stray, then maybe the parent is not living by example. You can't expect to be a lazy drunkard and have model, industrious children.

Hehe i knew u wldnt disappoint me

I support hitting children sometimes.. But only when necessary.. You don't hit children to transfer aggression or for any other reason other than correction...

The woman in your story made a big phacking mistake.. The kid wants water, when children are uncomfortable, they cry.. That's the only way they can pass their message.. It's her duty to take care of the kid and not abuse the poor child.. Phacking grumpy mother! And that Ade papa sef.. Wetin?? Ade face na bass drum??

Children are fragile, tender, weak.. Etc... Emotionally and whatnot... Parents should understand this na..

That's why parents who want to adopt hitting their kids should do so with canes, not sticks, or other harmful things.. Sometimes, children misbehave.. They can be foolish n ish.. Iswear, the foolishness in a child is colossal.. But the rod of correction drives it far.. Na bible talk am.. Parents should learn to treat children right..

And to an extent shaa.. You no fit just dy beat pikin like nama.. You wan kill am??

Nice one dear

Sometimes it's a quick fix in the heat of the moment but it's not a lasting solution. Parents need to be able to identify the shortcomings of their kids and reach them at a level where they make a conscious effort and decision to change. In doing this, love must always be the driving force.
Exactly

what parent don't understand is that hitting a child can cause emotional trauma.

The child is made to believe that violence is the only way to correct wrong situations.

I remember a lady once told me ' My mothers beatings didn't make me sober but more stubborn'.

I think parents should get to know their children and how which method of correction they respond to more effectively.

For me, beatings didn't work until my mother discovered corporal punishments sad

Chai !!!

My dear u r making sense jare hitting is not always d best solution

I have been thinking about this for a while now must nigerian parents be harsh before they know they are training there kids well.most times when i watch Mr. Craze and Ade doing there thing i laugh but deep down i really wonder if the whole slapping and beating is necessary.I am not saying that you shouldnt correct a child when that child is wrong what ever happened to d word "advice" or better still verbal correction. slapping and hitting that child is only needed when that child is being too stubborn or adamant.....take for example i was in a bus sometime last week nd a woman nd her probably 3yrs old son entered d bus,the child became hot due to the normal roasting sun + the tightness of the bus and the poor boy started crying and begging the mother for water,The kinda slap she gave that boy i cant forget it in a hurry.Everyone had to start shouting on the mother because she was excessively mean to dat child.well i dunno if dat story is enough to buttress my point on this matter ...ild lyk to hear from You guys too what is your take on dis issue??
