I searched but didn't see anywhere the government announced price increase from N187 to N1500 what happened was reaction of market forces to the announcement of the removal.

Government policies should not be ones that cause avoidable suffering for majority of the people for longer than necessary while the political office holders corruptly and institutionally insulate themselves from the punushing consequences of thier own policy miscalculations.

While there may be other issues that are directly and indirectly contributing to the cost of pms in nigeria, it must be noted that failing to deal with the corruption and other inefficiencies in the system are major factors that keep the price of pms needlessly high.

So what is a possible way forward? I will try to simplify it.

Supply crude oil to local refineries at not more than 5% of budget level estimates and ensure they refine for the local market. The government should then do its responsibility of reducing smuggling to a level where it does not have a significant effect on local supply.

Now, the 2026 budget estimate is based on $65 per barrel of crude oil at #1400 to a dollar and projected 1.8m bpd production.

Today, crude oil sales for over $90 per barrel.

Dangote claims to need about 600,000 barrels per day. However, to supply the Nigerian market, he doesn't need more than 450,000 bpd to produce the about 35m litres of pms per day consumed on Nigeria on the average.

Out of the 1.8m bpd, the Nigerian government's share is about 60% which translates to over 1m bpd. Now, lets assume 300,000 bpd are tied to loans. The government should be able to supply 500,000 barrels of crude oil per day to local refiners at a maximum of $70 per barrel for the local market.

Is this subsidy? Yes.

Is the government making a loss? No.

Would local refineries be making a loss? No

Would it negatively affect budget estimates? No.

The government only has to invest more is securing the borders and monitoring distribution. Mind you, this will reduce all crude oil related products- pms, diesel, aviation fuel etc...

If refineries have leftover, they can export at international rates, more profit for them, but they must first satisfy thier local supply quota.

Are there quirks to be worked out? Definitely. But those should not be an issue for a government that is really interested in protecting the socio-economic wellbeing of its citizens.

Based on premise, I don't think this argument removes the fact that fuel isn't cheap anywhere!

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's recent proposal to potentially reinstate fuel subsidies if elected raises significant concerns regarding fiscal responsibility and the long-term viability of our economy.

The subsidy system wasn’t just a financial burden; it was downright unsustainable. Before it was scrapped in May 2023, Nigeria was shelling out over ₦4 trillion each year to cover consumption we simply couldn’t afford.
We were borrowing to keep it afloat while watching our limited foreign exchange slip away to smugglers and arbitrageurs crossing our borders. That money wasn’t going towards building roads, schools, or improving power supply; it was just propping up inefficiency.

The benefits, though tough to swallow at first, are starting to show: monthly FAAC allocations to states have more than doubled, enabling them to pay salaries and kick off new projects. The NNPC is no longer the only player in the import game, which has helped stabilize the market. While the exchange rate is still a bit shaky, it’s at least reflecting reality instead of being artificially inflated by subsidy payments.

Reversing this policy now would mean stepping back into that same trap, but with even less flexibility to navigate.

Key questions Atiku’s proposal needs to address:
1. What will be the economic impact?
We’re already in a tight fiscal situation, with debt servicing taking up a huge chunk of our revenue. Where will the ₦5 trillion+ needed each year for subsidies come from? More borrowing? Increased taxes? Printing more money? Each of these options would only exacerbate inflation and our debt crisis.

2. Is it even sustainable?
The previous subsidy was only sustainable in theory because we kept pushing payments down the road. It fostered a situation where PMS was cheaper in Lagos than in Accra or Cotonou, leading to smuggling that accounted for up to 30% of our imports. How do you put a stop to that without locking down the borders?
Reinstating this policy now would signify a regression into that same predicament, but with even less capacity to maneuver.

3. Will fuel be purchased at the old prices?
Crude oil is priced in dollars, and the naira has made its adjustments. Even with a subsidy in place, can the government realistically bring petrol back down to ₦185 per litre without digging an even deeper hole in the budget? Or will it just be a half-hearted subsidy that leaves everyone dissatisfied?

4. Can the government really force prices back to pre-subsidy levels?
Price controls have never been effective in a deregulated market that relies heavily on imports.
If the government sets a cap on pump prices that falls below the landing cost, who ends up covering the difference? And how long will it be before marketers decide to leave the market, leading to long queues again, just like we experienced for years?

Ironically, Atiku himself campaigned in 2023 on the promise of removing subsidies. His policy document was clear: subsidies were a scam that needed to go.
So, the pressing question for Nigerians is: what’s changed now? Is it a matter of principle, or is it just politics?

Dismissing dissent as "economically ignorant" doesn’t contribute to the conversation. But neither does the promise of reverting to a policy that nearly bankrupted us. The struggles people are facing are very real, and the government needs to focus on targeted interventions:
CNG buses,
student loans,
social investments, and
improving state infrastructure.

The solution isn’t to start borrowing again just to keep petrol prices artificially low.
The subsidy is gone. Our focus now should be on managing this transition effectively, not reversing it.
