Nigerians and Indians have seen the most significant growth in employment in the UK between 2019 and 2023, according to data from His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
The HMRC, which is the UK's tax authority responsible for collecting direct and indirect taxes, as well as administering benefits and tax credit payments, provided the data following a Freedom of Information (FOI) request by Neil O’Brien, a member of parliament and former government minister.
The data shows a remarkable shift in the UK's employment landscape, with about 10 percent fewer jobs held by European Union (EU) nationals, while employment among people from outside the EU increased by 69 percent during the period.
Of the 1.481 million additional employments recorded in the UK, 1.465 million were held by non-EU nationals, with UK nationals accounting for only 257,000. Specifically, nationals from India and Nigeria saw the most significant increases, with 488,000 and 279,000 more employments, respectively. Pakistan and Ghana also recorded substantial employment growth, with increases of 101,000 and 55,000, respectively.
“Within that non-EU total, the biggest growth in employments in absolute terms were among nationals of India (+488,000), Nigeria (+279,000), Pakistan (+101,000), and Ghana (+55,000),” O’Brien noted in his analysis of the report.
In the private sector, non-EU nationals saw a 1.2 million increase in employment opportunities, while UK nationals secured just 29,000 additional jobs.
However, the report also highlighted a decline in earnings for Indian and Nigerian nationals relative to their UK counterparts. Before the pandemic, young working-age individuals from India and Nigeria earned 15 and 10 percent more, respectively, than UK nationals of the same age, but now they earn less.
Ben Brindle, an economist at Oxford University’s Migration Observatory think tank, suggested to the Daily Mail that non-EU migrants are increasingly taking up roles that were previously held by EU workers before Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The data underscores the significant impact of migration on the UK's employment market, with non-EU nationals playing a growing role in the country's workforce.

LASEMA Elife Fire Unit, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, NEMA, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force and Lagos State Ambulance Services, LASAMBUS teamed up and quickly curtailed the fire from spreading to other adjoining buildings and facilities.
The immediate cause of the fire has not beem ascertained. Thankfully, there was no casualty from the incident.
Some unidentified hoodlums have burnt down the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Champion Zonal Headquarters) located along Federal College of Education (FCE) road in Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, August 10, 2024.
It was gathered that the same church had been burnt down 10 years ago by unidentified hoodlums who had warned that the church building should not be completed.

“There is freedom of worship in Niger state, I am sure by the time the government and security agencies take action, it will go a long way to address any form of tension that may want to escalate beyond control,” he said.

An Assistant Pastor of the church, Pastor Samson Ogbebor, said the incident occurred around 3:00 am on Saturday.
“I got a distress call that our Church was on fire and on getting there I met a church that has been in existence for the past 20 years being burnt down and properties looted by hoodlums,” he told the Nigerian Tribune.
“This Church has faced lots of challenges, sometimes about 10 years ago, hoodlums came and burnt it down completely and with self -efforts, we were able to erect it again.
“They had made several unsuccessful attempts and have refused us the permission to roof it properly and we decided to be using it like that for worship but look at what they have done today again."
Also, an Elder in the church, Mrm John Aboje disclosed that they have no cause to be deterred by the incident but to continue to be good Christians and citizens of Nigeria.
"We just want the government and the Kontagora emirate council to look into this very issue to allow freedom of worship”.
Reacting, the Emir of Kontagora, Alhaji Muhammadu Barau Mu’azu II, appealed to the State Governor, Umaru Bago; and all relevant security agencies to treat the incident with all seriousness.
“The incident has been reported to the Division ‘A’ Police station in Kontagora for investigation and to bring the perpetrators to book,” the monarch said.

A 30-year-old Nigerian who grew up as a girl before learning that she has male and female sex organs has shared her story after impregnating two women and welcoming kids with them.
Queen Obukoko grew up thinking she was like other girls, though she had a deeper voice. Also, [b]she noticed a penis-like growth around her groin. Her parents thought it was a benign growth and tried everything to "treat" it.[,/b]
In an interview on Facebook with media personality, Lucky Udu, Obukoko said she became conscious of her condition when she turned 15 and realised she could pee standing up. She also spoke to Godfrey George in an interview published on Punch.
She said: "When I was young, I wasn’t conscious of my body until I clocked 15 years. One day, I was playing around with my friends in school and became pressed, so I went to ease myself with other girls.
"Anytime I want to ease myself, I usually feel the urge to do so through a particular genital. It could come from the female or the male side. But on that day, the urge came from the male genital," Obukoko recalled.[/b,]
She said as she was relieving herself, she received the biggest embarrassment of her life.
"All my friends who went to ease themselves with me called other people to look at me. They wondered how I would be standing to urinate as a woman.
[b]"They said it was not right and something must be wrong with me. Then, a few of them came in front of me to find out how I could stand up to ease myself. They saw that I had a penis and some of them ran away, while others looked at me in wonder," she said.
She said her situation eventually made it to the internet after someone saw her peeing while standing and filmed her.
Obukoko said she became more conscious of her body after that incident and started urinating at hidden places to avoid being embarrassed.
She said, "I changed the pattern of my dressing and started to wear big outfits. If I am pressed and have to ease myself, I look for a hidden place and stand to pee so I don’t get embarrassed. If I don’t find a hidden place, I’ll hold back the urine till I get home."
Obukoko said she also struggled to maintain romantic relationships with men as most of them, either abandoned her or began extorting money from her when they found out about her condition.
She said, "People outside my family didn’t know I am intersex, except those I tell on my own. As for men, I get checked out but the romance doesn’t always last." She recalled how one man kept blackmailing her by threatening to post her nudes online if she didn't pay him money.
Eventually, she decided to try relationship with women after failing at relationships with men. This decision resulted in her dating a woman and welcoming a son with her.
However, the woman left her because she couldn't present a woman to the world as her child's father. "She’s ashamed to show the world that an intersex person is the father of her child. She took the child from me and ran away. But we both know that I’m the father of the boy," Obukoko said.
Asked if she still sees the child, she replied, "I see the child every three months." Obukoko went into a relationship with another woman and the 24-year-old gave birth to a baby girl some months ago.
However, it appears the baby girl might be intersex (hermaphrodite) too. Obukoko said, "I’m scared to say it, this baby girl that is just a month old is intersex. I don’t want my child to pass through what I’m experiencing right now. We want to do surgery for her, but I’m scared.
"I’ve not made any inquiries because when the child was born, everything was confusing. The male organ was small and that was how I was. Everything my mum told me about myself is the same as the baby. I am afraid and confused right now, and I don’t know what to do."

The Kano State Police Command has arrested a notorious armed robber, Hassan Iliya and recovered two AK-47 rifles with 47 rounds of live ammunition.
The spokesperson of the command, SP Abdullah Haruna Kiyawa, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, said the sum of four million, nine hundred and eight-six Thousand Naira (N4,986,000.00) was also recovered from the suspect.
According to the PPRO, the suspect and his gang stormed a house in Kunchi Local Government Area of the state, attacked the owner and robbed him of N15m.

A man is lucky to be alive after he inserted a big, live eel into his anus with a lemon.
The 31-year-old Indian expatriate ended up in a hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam, after experiencing severe abdominal pain.
Doctors at the Viet Duc Hospital spotted the 26-inch-long eel in an X-ray scan, which the man had shoved up his bum earlier that day, Saturday, July 27.
The X-ray revealed a "long bone-like structure" which extended across the patient’s abdomen from right to left, reports Must Share News.
In an even more horrific discovery, doctors determined that the pain was caused as the eel tried to chew its way out of the man’s digestive tract by biting through the large intestine.
In yet another revolting yet puzzling twist, as medical staff tried removing the fish with a probe, also inserted in the man’s anus, the team discovered the man had popped a whole lemon into his rectum as well.
Surgeons then had to cut through the abdomen to remove the eel with forceps, and work the lemon back through the man’s anus until he pooed it back out. They then stitched up the hole in his intestine.
The man now has to live with a colostomy bag, and medical staff say he would have died without intervention.

A 29-year-old lady, Margaret Sunday Udoh, was arrested for stealing $20,000 two months after being released from the Kirikiri correctional facility in Lagos.
Udoh, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, was arrested on July 28, 2024, after completing a year's jail term on January 20, before returning to crime in March 2024.
Her first prison experience happened after she stole from her employer in Ikate, Lagos State. She stole a wristwatch worth N22 million and € 1,500 before she was arrested and sentenced to one year in the Kirikiri correctional facility.
She came out in January, got a job as a house help in March 2024, and stole 20,000, but claimed she stole $12,300. The support had the support of the security guard, Emmanuel Ozogie from Nasarawa State, to whom she gave $300 and moved to Ebonyi State. The police recovered $3,000 from her while she gave part of the money to her father to commence his building.
The spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Tuesday, July 30.
“She is smart. To avoid being tracked, she dumped her phone with SIM in a spot in Lagos without switching it off. So, while the police were tracking the phone, she was out of Lagos,” the PPRO said. “After she stole the money, her employer, who failed to do the due diligence before employing her or asking about her family or where she stays, reported to the police. We started an investigation, which led us to Ebonyi State, where she was arrested. The suspects are to be charged to court soon.” Speaking with the Guardian at the police headquarters in Ikeja, the suspect claimed that it was greed that led her to commit the crime.
According to her, she started working as a house help in 2015 in Port Harcourt and has been sending all the money she makes to her parents to support them. She said her first crime was committed in the Ikate area of Surulere in Lagos.
“I have worked with 10 people and only stole from two. I left Port Harcourt because the work was stressful and moved to Delta State, where I spent only five months because the workload was heavy,” she said.
“I returned to Port Harcourt, then moved to Bayelsa State before coming to Lagos in 2019, where I worked as a house help in Ikorodu. I spent two months and moved to Chevron, where I spent five months but left because I couldn't cope.”
“I worked with a family in Jakande Estate, spent a year, and then six months with one Gbemisola. I left after six months because she told me she couldn't afford to pay my salary. I then worked with one Alexandra, but the person relocated abroad.”
“I worked in Ikate, where I stole money and a wristwatch. I was jailed, and I came out on January 20. One Mr Emmanuel linked me with Miss Adeyemi, but he knows nothing about this. I was interviewed on March 3, 2024, and resumed work the next day as a housekeeper,”
“One day, I saw $12,300 in her wardrobe, and I informed Emmanuel, the gateman, who advised me to take the money. I gave him $300 and we moved from the house on March 10, 2024, and went to the park.”
Asked about his involvement, 27-year-old Ozogie said: “I have been working there for three years, and I never got involved in this situation. I lost my father, my mother and my brother, and I have been struggling to do what God assigned me to do, which is preaching to people,” he said.
“I used to preach to her, and I encouraged her. I warned her that the woman would find her, but she convinced me that she couldn't be arrested. She told me that she liked me and wanted to settle down with me,"
"I was also looking for a woman to settle down with, and I was told that she was the one God assigned for me. She left me at the park, and street urchins took the money. I regret getting involved.”
Oba Adejuyigbe Adefunmi II of Oyotunji African village in Beaufort County, Southern Carolina, United State of America, was allegedly stabbed to death by his sister during a heated argument.
Authorities say the deceased was stabbed on Monday, July 29, 2024, WJCL reported.
According to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, the BCSO communications center received a report of a stabbing around 2:45 p.m. at the village, which is located on Bryant Lane.

Some suspected miscreants have begun threatening Lagos State residents not to participate in the hunger protest scheduled from Thursday, August 1 to Saturday, August 10.
In a viral clip on Tuesday, individuals whose voices were the only ones audible were chastising market women and men in a Lagos market, urging them to desist from the planned protest, as it might lead to more destruction than that witnessed during the #EndSARS protest.
Anyone confident should come out on Thursday to protest. Are you the only one hungry? If you dare come out for the protest, you will be mercilessly dealt with.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that some youths in Lagos held a solidarity march to counter the planned nationwide hunger protest scheduled for August 1.
Additionally, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has urged all groups planning to participate in the proposed nationwide protest to submit their details to the Commissioners of Police in their respective states.
He stated this was to ensure the protest remains peaceful. Egbetokun said, “We acknowledge the constitutional right of Nigerian citizens to peaceful assembly and protest.
“However, in the interest of public safety and order, we urge all groups planning to protest to provide the necessary details to the Commissioner of Police in the state where the protest is intended to take place.”
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has indicated that there is no longer a need for the planned nationwide hunger protests scheduled for August 1 to 10, 2024.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said this while addressing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Monday, which was presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
Idris stated that the government is already addressing some of the demands made by aggrieved Nigerians and is making efforts to ensure that food is made available.

More than 50 new homes named after a young Nigerian man who died trying to rescue a woman from the Thames have been officially unveiled in south London, United Kingdom.
Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole, 20, was on his way home from work in April 2021 when at about midnight, he went into the water after seeing a woman fall from London Bridge.
The woman and a second man who had also jumped in to rescue her were saved by the coastguard and marine police.
But Mr Olubunmi-Adewole, fondly call Jimi, could not be found and his body was recovered about six hours later.
Mr Olubunmi-Adewole's family and local councillors, including Helen Dennis, attended the official opening last week, with Ms Dennis describing the event as "a great honour"
In a post on X, she added that "Jimi was such a brave young man and we hope these new homes will be a fitting tribute to his heroism life"

Lagos State police have raided the popular Fela Shrine and its environs in Ikeja, arresting several suspects for illegal drug peddling, hooliganism, and criminal activities.
The police arrested at least 124 suspects alleged to have converted the area into hard drug markets and liquor- stands located on the road, causing serious environmental risks.
The night raid, led by the Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP, Adetayo Akerele, took place over the weekend at night time.
Akerele said; “The activities of these suspected criminals at Aminkanle Area of Agbado, Jobi Fele Road by African Shrine, and NerdC Street, especially at night are dangerous to humanity at all levels. The clean-up became necessary in the interest of environmental serenity, safety, sanity and maintenance of Lagos State’s Mega City status.

A 49-year-old Nigerian national awaiting deportation from Australia and another man have been charged after police busted an alleged $9 million drug operation running out of an immigration detention centre in Sydney.
NWS Police in a statement on Saturday, July 27, 2024, said they stormed Villawood Detention Centre, where they allegedly found two kilograms of meth worth $165,000 hidden inside porridge boxes.

The Nigerian Immigration Service says it has suspended one of its officers serving at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Akomolafe Michael, for multiple charges of alleged drug trafficking.
The Service Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo, revealed this in a statement on Wednesday titled, ‘Nigeria immigration service places officer on suspension over drug charges, awaits court judgement for further action.’
It read, “The attention of the Nigeria Immigration Service has been drawn to a publication by sections of the media that linked Akomolafe Michael, one of its Officers serving at Murtala Muhammad International Airport, to multiple charges of alleged drug trafficking which resulted in his arraignment before a Federal High Court in Lagos.
The Service wishes to inform the public that the officer in question has since been subjected to internal processes and placed under suspension following the allegation of his involvement in the case in May 2024.
The Service, therefore, fully supports the court proceedings aimed at determining the level of his culpability.”
NIS says it awaits the court’s judgment before making further comments on the matter to avoid subjudice.
“The Service reaffirms its commitment to excellent service delivery, discipline, and zero tolerance for criminality and will not hesitate to sanction any officer whose conduct is contrary to these ideals,” wrote Udo.
The suspended Abia State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, has resigned her position from Governor Alex Otti’s cabinet.
DAILY POST recalls that the governor had on June 11, 2024, suspended the Health Commissioner over alleged financial misconduct. The governor also set up a committee to probe the allegations against her.

A day-old baby was found de@d in a manhole in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The sad discovery was made by members of the Diobu vigilante group on Tuesday, July 23, at Ekwe Street by Ikwerre Road, Mile 3 Diobu. Mr. Godstime Ihunwo, the Chief Security Officer of Nkpolu Orowurokwo working with Diobu vigilante said the community security team found the baby already dead during their patrol. He said: "In the early hours of today, July 23, at about 5 a.m., my team and I were on patrol.
"On getting to Ikwerre Road/Ekwe Street, Mile 3 Diobu, Port Harcourt, we discovered that a newborn baby was dumped in a manhole.
"We discovered that the baby was dead. It was a male. I quickly rushed down to the Nkpolu Police Division to make an entry. I also contacted Prince Wiro, who is a human rights activist."
Meanwhile, Prince Wiro, who is the National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, has condemned the action of the unidentified mother describing it as the height of wickedness.
Wiro said: "It is sad that before the vigilante group discovered the infant male, he was already dead. The action of the mother of the child is a crime that is punishable under Nigerian law.
"We use this opportunity to urge residents who may have useful information about the identity of the child’s mother to report to the Police for necessary action."
