Nigerians received the most US green cards on the African continent in 2023, according to data from the Department of Homeland Security.
US immigration law defines a lawful permanent resident (LPR) or “green card” holder as a foreign national who has been granted the status of residing permanently in the country.
LPRs may apply to become US citizens if they meet certain additional eligibility requirements.
According to the 2023 lawful permanent residents annual flow report released by the Office of Homeland Security Statistics (OHSS) in September, nearly 1,173,000 persons were granted green cards last year.
The report said majority of the new LPRs (52 percent) were already present in the US when they were granted lawful permanent resident status.
About 64 percent were granted LPR status based on a family relationship with a U.S. citizen or current LPR,” the report said.
The leading countries of new LPRs by birth were Mexico, Cuba, and India.
The report said 418,930 of the total new green card holders were Africans (35.7 percent).
Of the 20 countries featured on the list of the most granted green card permits, Nigeria ranked 15 and was the only African nation that made the cut.
California was the most preferred state of residence for immigrants with 205,040 arrivals, the report showed.
Florida ranked second while New York, Texas, and New Jersey were third, fourth, and fifth respectively.
The median age for new LPRs was 35 years.
“New LPR’s who were 65 years of age and older increased 62 percent from 2022,” the report added.
Females were also the most granted green card permit gender, while married applicants received the most in terms of marital status.

At least, five persons have lost their lives while many others have been hospitalised after consuming a beans meal prepared as ‘love feast’ known as ‘ipese’ at a white garment church in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
According to The Punch, the incident occurred last Sunday, September 22, 2024, at the unnamed church located at Apata area in Ido local government area of the state.
Health officials at the Infectious Disease Centre, Olodo, in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State where the affected persons were taken to, confirmed the death of the five worshippers, adding that scores were brought into the centre for emergency treatment.
A staff of the Infectious Disease Centre told the newspaper under anonymity that 50 of the victims who were rushed to the centre had been treated and discharged.
“Some of the affected people were brought here for treatment. So far, 50 have been discharged, while others are still receiving care,” the official said.
Also confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Oyo State Command, Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the incident.
Osifeso said investigations were ongoing on the incident.
Although the incident has thrown the community into a state of confusion, however, a church source, who requested anonymity, revealed that it was yet to be established whether the meal was responsible for the deaths or not.
“I ate the same beans that everyone else, including the victims, ate, and nothing happened to me,” the source said, wondering if the ‘Ipese’ was responsible for the incident as being claimed by some people.
“Various government agencies, including the Police, DSS, media outlets, and even the World Health Organization, have been here to investigate. Their findings haven’t been made public yet, but I can assure you it’s not about Ipese,” the source stated.

Three young men have lost their lives while others were injured after two cars collided on the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge in Lagos State.
The incident happened at about 1am on Sunday morning, September 22, a source claimed on social media.
The social media user wrote: "18 yrs old driver killed 3 of his friends in accident. Police arrested the remaining 2 survivors.
"The driver was about 18 yrs old and without a drivers licence."
This incident happened at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge toll gate around 1:00 AM yesterday morning. About eight people were inside two of the cars when the crash happened, and sadly, three of them lost their lives. Two died on the spot, and one passed away a few minutes after being pulled from the wrecked car.” the source added.
The drivers of both vehicles, including the 18-year-old, survived.
President Bola Tinubu has ordered security and law enforcement agencies to intensify their crackdown on cybercriminals and transnational car theft rings operating in the country.
He directed agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), to target individuals involved in the possession and trafficking of stolen vehicles.
The President in a statement issued on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, emphasised that depriving criminals of the proceeds from their illicit activities is a powerful tool in combating organized crime.
He commended the EFCC for returning 53 vehicles and $180,300 to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on behalf of two Canadian victims of cybercrime involving Nigerian nationals.
Expressing concern over transnational crime groups exporting stolen vehicles to Nigeria, President Tinubu lauded the collaboration between Nigerian authorities and international partners in addressing the issue.
He also stressed the importance of preserving seized assets for the benefit of the state, victims, and society in line with legal frameworks and global conventions.

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the All Progressives Congress candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on his victory in the Edo State governorship election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday declared APC's Okpebholo as the winner of the election.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu lauded APC national leaders, Edo State leaders, and party governors for their efforts in securing the win.
He described the victory as a testament to the people’s endorsement of the APC’s progressive ideals, economic reform agenda, and commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians.

The Imo State Police Command says it is aware of the recent video circulating on social media depicting a confrontation during the arrest of a young man and wants to assure the public that the command takes such matters seriously and is committed to maintaining law and order in the State.
In the statement released today September 21, the spokesperson of the state police command, ASP Henry Okoye, says four operatives of the command’s Anti-Narcotics unit namely, Sgt Patrick Nwangbo, Cpl God’swill Okechukwu, Cpl Justice Nnorom and Cpl Goodluck Iwuagwu, embarked on an operation at Ovoro-Uzomiri Umuosu, Naze in Owerri North LGA of Imo State, on September 16, to execute an arrest warrant for a young man named, Prince Amaechi (m) 32yrs allegedly linked to a case of conspiracy and drug trafficking based on the confession of previously arrested suspects named; Ijeoma Ezealamba ‘f’, Ebenezer Chukwuka ‘m’.
‘’During the operation, the suspect resisted arrest, leading to the escalation captured in the video. The command condemns the actions of the operatives, emphasizing that the situation should have been handled with greater discretion and professionalism. The operatives involved have been apprehended for interrogation, and the Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the IGP X-Squad Imo State Command for thorough investigation. Additionally, the officers will face an orderly room trial pending the outcome of the investigation.''
Okoye added that the command appeals to the public to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation while it conducts an investigation.
The INEC National Commissioner in charge of Edo, Prof. Rhoda Gumus, has said that she will not collect any bribe to upturn the results of the state governorship election.
While speaking on Channels TV, Gumus boasted that no one would dare approach her with a bribe because of her reputation.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested some suspects for alleged vote buying in the ongoing governorship election in Edo state.
A viral video shows EFCC and police operatives apprehending three suspects, two men and a woman, at a polling unit in the LGA, before dragging them away and out of sight.
Handing out money to voters, or inducing electorates to cast ballots in a certain direction, have become commonplace across Nigeria during elections.

Narrating her ordeal to newsmen, the woman, Olivia Ijeoma Chukwuemeka, admitted that she had been on the hookup site called “coded site."
”I met the suspect some months ago. I live in Enugu but visit Abuja for other business reasons," she said.
“When I got to the hotel, the suspect asked me if I was afraid of d£ath.
“He said if I cooperate with him he will not hurt me like other girls. He said his friend was outside and if I made any wrong move, he injected me with something.
“I pleaded with him, he slapped me and asked me to strip my clothes. I tried to get to the door but it was locked by him and he held the keys,” she said.
She said that he used her dress to firstly tie her hands but when it was not tight enough, he took out a cellophane tap.“He turned the television volume very high and blocked my mouth with a handkerchief.”
She further said that he stole her phone, unlocked it, forced her thumb on the screen and asked for her bank account details. She said after unlocking the phone, he discovered that she didn’t have money in the account. He warned me not to make any noise and left the room.
“I later noticed movement outside the door and saw the colour of the uniform the person was wearing and was relieved that it was the hotel staff.
“I struggled and dragged myself to the window and banged it hard. Luckily, the guy heard me and I made a sign pointing in the direction the suspect went,” she said.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command has interviewed the suspected internet fraudster, Joseph Efe, who tied up a lady at Top View hotel, Wuse, Zone 5, Abuja.
Parading the suspect on Friday, September 20, 2024, the FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu said Efe specialises in luring ladies on dating sites called 'coded runs' with the intent to robbing them of their phones and making withdrawal from his victims' bank accounts.
“The 30-year-old suspect, Joseph Efe, who is of Edo and Ondo origin, was arrested after coming out of the hotel premises allegedly to meet an accomplice, leaving his victim tied up in the hotel room,” Odumosu stated.
"The eagle eyed men of the NSCDC FCT Command who were at their sentry post, upon noticing Joseph's suspicious movement stopped him but instead of stopping, the suspect took to his heels after sighting our gallant officers who chased him, caught him and was led back to his hotel room, where the naked girl was found tied hands and legs with semi transparent adhesive tape (Cellotape).
"The victim, Olivia Ijeoma Chukwuemeka, who hails from Abia State was immediately rescued from the situation where she has been stripped naked, bound, hands, feet and mouth.
Olusola Odumosu said the suspect confessed to being a yahoo boy and that he has not been making money from the act so he decided to hunt for young girls on a dating site called 'coded runs' and that he operates between Port Harcourt, Lagos, Benin and Abuja.
Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspect, Mr Efe is a serial fraudster (yahoo) and a thief, who specialises in luring ladies on dating sites into hotel rooms with the intent to robbing them of their phones and making withdrawal from his victims bank account.
Investigation also reveals that the suspect arrived Abuja from Lagos on the 17th September, 2024 and lodged into FAB by Top Rank Hotel adjacent old Federal Secretariat, Area1.
His first victim on arrival in Abuja was another lady he invited to his hotel room but could not succeed in his evil act because the lady was able to put up some resistance.
The noise attracted hotel staff at the said hotel, who came into his room. He succeeded in escaping from the scene due to poor handling of the situation by the hotel security.
Upon his escape from FAB Hotel, he then proceeded to Top View Hotel where he checked in at about 2:30am of Wednesday, 18th September 2024.
He invited his latest victim who arrived at about 9am. He threatened her, putting fear in her and holding her by the throat, the frightened lady succumbed to her abductor, she was then stripped and bound.
On checking the victim’s phone he discovered the lady had no money in her bank account, he then took the victim’s android phone and left the hotel room.
It was in the process of escaping from the hotel premises that his movement became suspicious, but in the process of trying to stop him, he took to his heels, he was chased and caught by NSCDC Operatives.
While addressing journalists, Dr. Odumosu said:
"let it be made abundantly clear that the video in circulation on this incident was not shot by the operatives of the NSCDC, we only became aware of its existence as it went viral on social media.
"Furthermore, as a Corps, we are duty bound and empowered to do due diligence before taking necessary steps towards prosecuting or handing over a suspect as the case may be to any relevant sister agency".
After preliminary investigation, the suspect and the victim will be handed over to the relevant agency for any further necessary action.”
The FCT Commandant also warned all hotel owners to be more vigilant, and that they should do more to protect their guests and hotel facilities as well as ensuring their premises are not used as a place to perpetuate crime.
The Commandant who described the way the victim was tied by her abductor as inhuman cautioned all young ladies involved in 'hook up' to desist from such acts that will endanger their lives.

A man's alleged plot to use a woman for rituals was disrupted after the woman's screams alerted staff to what was going on in a hotel in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.
Hotel employees, who heard screams coming from one of the rooms, rushed in to find a woman completely naked and tied with cellotape.
Her hands and legs were tied together with a cellotape. The cellotape can also be seen around the woman's neck.
The hotel staff are heard saying it was the woman's scream that saved her.
They are heard scolding the woman for going with the man. They also scolded the man for trying to use the woman for “rituals”.
They ordered the man to cut the tapes he used to tie the woman's leg together, while the woman used her dress to cover her naked body.
One unidentified male adult lost his life while eight others were seriously injured after two commercial buses collided on the third mainland bridge in Lagos state today September 16. The accident occurred inward Oworonsoki's end of the bridge.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of the Public Affairs Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA, said both drivers of the buses were driving at top speed when the accident happened. He said the injured had been taken to the Gbagada General Hospital for medical attention while the d3ad had been deposited in the morgue.

Swift intervention by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) facilitated the rapid rescue of eight passengers, all of whom suffered severe fractures. The injured were immediately transported to Gbagada General Hospital for urgent medical care, courtesy of the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS).''
