Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that Nigeria has the third highest unemployment rate at 33.3 per cent, while South Africa has the highest rate among a list of 82 countries. The report stated that South Africa’s unemployment rate rose to 34.4 per cent in the second quarter from 32.6 per cent, while Namibia has the second highest unemployment rate rises at 33.4 per cent. According to the Bloomberg report, the median of three economists’ estimates in a survey was 33.2 per cent. READ ALSO: Dangote Cement Issues Commercial Papers worth N450 billion in 3 Years According to the expanded definition, unemployment includes people who were available for work but not looking for a job, rose to 44.4 per cent from 43.2 per cent in the first quarter. Among the countries tracked by Bloomberg, the unemployment rate in South Africa is now the highest. However, the data from some of the nations could be outdated. Unemployment data in South Africa is likely to deteriorate in the third quarter because of the government’s decision to prevent the third wave of COVID-19 infections, which is also hindering efforts to revive an economy that shrank 7 per cent last year. The report added that rising joblessness rate could heap pressure on authorities to extend relief measures that would complicate efforts to stabilise public finances. The report by Bloomberg also noted that there was an eruption of deadly riots in July in the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, two key economic hubs, which claimed 354 lives and saw thousands of businesses looted and shuttered. The unrest cost the country about $3.3bn in lost output and placed at least 150,000 jobs at risk, according to the South African Property Owners Association. It is worthy of note that the unemployment rate in Africa’s most-industrialised economy has been above 20 per cent for at least two decades, even though output expanded by five per cent or more a year in the early 2000s. https://www.naijabusiness.com.ng/news/2021/nigeria-is-third-in-the-global-unemployment-rate/ |

Prophet T.B Joshua |
That’s not true, Prophet TB Joshua is not dead. God forbid! This was a reaction from one of the adherents of Prophet T.B Joshua when the news of his departure was first circulated on social media. A lot of Nigerians and lovers of Prophet Joshua hoped that the news will be subsequently confirmed as fake. After a mild speculation and enquiries, the Synagogue Church of Nations (SCOAN) via a publicly issued statement dated 6th of June, 2021, confirmed the death of its founder and renowned televangelist and philanthropist, Prophet T.B Joshua, who died aged 57. Following the confirmation of his death, a lot of encomiums have been showered on the popular preacher. Prominent individuals have eulogized the life and times of the popular teacher; in fact the media yesterday were awash with stories of members and friends visiting the headquarters of the synagogue in Lagos, to confirm the news of his departure. In view of this, naijabusiness.com.ng through this piece, wants to evaluate the contributions of the popular preacher to religious tourism, and how his death might hurt Nigeria’s largest economy, Lagos. Understanding TB Joshua’s SCOAN contribution to Lagos economy According to the late prophet, the journey to start one of the most visited religious attractions and charismatic Christian mega church in Nigeria started in 1987, after receiving a ‘divine anointing’ and covenant from God. The church which has its headquarters in Ikotun-Egbe Lagos started with a handful of members. According to Wikipedia, the church has now grown to be one of Nigeria’s most influential churches, attracting over 50,000 people to its weekly Sunday services. Despite the surge in members, it is stunning to note that the church never had a branch outside its headquarters. According to figures released by the Nigerian Immigration Service, six out of every ten foreign travellers coming into Nigeria are bound for The SCOAN, a major reason why the church is dubbed as ‘’ Nigeria’s biggest tourist attraction’’ and ‘’ the most visited destination by religious tourists in West Africa.’’ According to The Guardian, the church receives more weekly attendees than the combined number of visitors to Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London. All this portends a great opportunity for local businesses situated around the church. Why the surge in attendance? Naijabusiness.com.ng understands that the popular prophet during his lifetime was well known for conducting miracles. The regular occurrences of these divine miracles coupled with the quest for life changing spiritual experiences and prosperity, have been a major PULL to a lot of these tourists. Some of the incurable disabilities and illnesses allegedly healed by the prophet include; HIV/AIDS, blindness, open wounds etc. Though controversial, some of these miracles have been mentioned in reputable print media globally, such as Time Magazine, Associated Press interview, Foreign Policy, among others. READ: Detailed Guide on How to Register as Lagos State Government Contractor, Supplier, or Consultant Multiplier effect on the Lagos economy As earlier stated in this piece, despite the surge in the membership of the church, it was striking to note that the great prophet never thought of decentralizing the church or better put, citing branches elsewhere. By implication, all members of the church that wish to visibly attend its service will have to travel down to its one and only branch situated in Ikotun Egbe, Lagos. In understanding the role the church play in impacting local businesses and by extension the Lagos economy, a report by The Guardian of London stated that: ‘’ The SCOAN is a big brand for Nigeria, and a lot of revenues are generated by those involved in the tourism chain, especially members of ACHAN, who provide nothing less than 35 buses and equally a large number of small vehicles to move these visitors on a daily basis.’’ The report went further to showcase how new and emerging businesses around the location have sprung up in recent years. From hoteling business to a surge in the demand for catering professionals like cooks and even local shuttle. In one way or the other, residents and local businesses around seems to have benefited from religious tourism and will most likely pay higher taxes to the government. It is naturally anticipated that the tourists who fly into Nigeria to visit his church do lodge in hotels, board commercial vehicles and patronize eateries and visit other tourist sites around the locality. These activities are evident by the human and vehicular congestion usually experienced around the location of the church during services. Furthermore, a tourism lecturer at the Tshwane University of Technology, Unathi Henama in her article titled ‘’TB Joshua emigrating to Israel: Lessons for South Africa on religious tourism,’’ opined that the demand to travel to Nigeria in a bid to visit SCOAN remains robust especially from South Africa. She estimated the cost of travel from SA to the aforementioned place at R24,000 per individual. To buttress the impact of the church to our economy, the Vice President of the Nigerian Association of Tour Operators, Ime Udo, while reacting to a planned relocation of the church to Isreal in 2017 had informed the press that Nigeria would lose billions of Naira from religious tourism revenue if SCOAN relocates to Isreal. She said: ‘’The local community; hotel operators, food vendors and others around SCOAN must have benefitted from tourists. “SCOAN has, no doubt, contributed immensely to the tourism profile of Nigeria with several heads of government from various African countries that had visited there to seek spiritual restoration and advise from Pastor TB Joshua,’’ she added. With the aforementioned points, it will be an understatement to say that the demise of the great prophet will affect a lot of people and businesses that depend on the thriving state of the church. A lot of direct and indirect jobs that have been created through the process will most likely be affected. A flip of the coin By contrast, to have a glimpse of what the demise of the prophet portends for local businesses around the area, naijabusiness.com.ng recalls the hardship faced by hoteliers during the closure of the church as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. A report by BusinessDay newspaper revealed that over 60% of hotels and accommodation facilities in Ikotun were shut down due to the closure of the church, ultimately sending thousands of hospitality and ancillary workers back into labour market. Lamenting the losses incurred during the one year closure of the church due to the pandemic, Sunny Ozumba, owner of a hotel and a pilgrims’ hostel in Ikotun told BusinessDay that: ‘’ We have those whose main source of clientele is accommodating pilgrims that visit the SCOAN only or mostly. I don’t know about others, but for us who are involved in accommodating pilgrims to Synagogue, we are having it tough. ‘’The situation is also the same with fast food restaurant business and other shop owners in Ikotun. The way it is with us, that is the way it is with most of them because we are all thriving from the visitors. Most of them have closed shop while some are just hanging on as I am. That is the position of things. But, there is hope. Without hope we would have shut down. I think the church may not open its door until the virus fizzles out,” Ozumba concluded. Conclusion: With the demise of Prophet Joshua, it is unlikely that SCOAN will keep attracting the number of religious tourists that it does weekly. This comes with a huge cost to local businesses and individuals that depend on the thriving nature of the church. However, the loss can be mitigated if there is a good succession plan in place to ensure continuity, otherwise the direct and indirect jobs created by the virtue of the location of the church in Lagos might be threatened, leading to a loss of thousands of jobs. The negative impact of these losses of jobs cannot be overemphasized, especially now that there is a rising level of unemployment and insecurity. https://www.naijabusiness.com.ng/news/2021/how-tb-joshuas-death-may-hurt-the-economy-of-lagos/ |

Nigerians have been kept in the dark over what the official foreign exchange rate is today, as the apex financial institution in the country, (the Central Bank of Nigeria) removed the exchange rate of N379/$1 from its website. It is pertinent to note that since the CBN adjusted the exchange rate in August 2020, it has retained the exchange rate of N379 per dollar on its website, implying an official exchange rate. Historically, analysts have referenced this rate as the official rate for the country. However with recent development and given the fact that the CBN is yet to comment on the matter, Nigerians who have spoken to NaijaBusiness.com have expressed their worries and fears over the worst. As at the period of writing this, checks into the website of Nigeria’s leading securities and exchange firm, FMDQ revealed that the N379/$1 is still maintained by the firm. One major source of worry for most Nigerians who are sceptical about the recent development is the fear of a possible devaluation by the apex bank. Experience have shown that this fear have been long maintained by Nigerians, despite CBN denial and rejection of such plans. NaijaBusiness.com understands that Nigeria has been under serious pressure to move from its managed float policy to a flexible exchange regime, as part of the condition to grant request for ‘’emergency financial assistance’’ of $3.4 billion under its Rapid Financing Instrument. READ: CBN Announces Indefinite Extension Of ‘Naira4dollar’ Scheme Does the removal imply possible devaluation? Analysts have explained that the removal of the erstwhile N379/$1 does not necessarily portend or imply possible devaluation. It is just a technical way of ensuring convergence between the disparity in parallel rates and the official rates. The action is viewed as a deliberate means of achieving near perfect market convergence rates. It is an open secret that Nigeria practises multiple exchange regimes such as NAFEX, SMEIS and BDC, however the NAFEX rate is the official exchange rate recognized for transaction between parties. In this light, experts have predicted the continuation of this trend. Recall that CBN had recently announced the indefinite extension of its ‘Naira4 dollar’ scheme https://www.naijabusiness.com.ng/news/2021/uncertainty-over-official-foreign-exchange-rate-as-cbn-removes-n379-1-from-website/ |
The recent Bill and Melinda Gates split is touted by some analysts to be the world’s most expensive divorce, set to eclipse the world’s largest divorce settlement recorded in the Jeff Bezos- MacKenzie Scott split two years ago. Recall that Bill and Melinda Gates announced that they are getting divorced, after 27 years of marriage. A joint statement issued by the estranged couple reads: ‘’ After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage. “Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. “We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. “We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life,” the statement concluded. Though details of the divorce settlement is yet to be made public as at the time of reporting this, analysts however tipped the split to eclipse the infamous Jeff-Mackenzie split which was estimated to be worth around $38 billion. The settlement made MacKenzie Scott the third wealthiest woman in the world. Mr Gates is the fourth richest person in the world, and is estimated by Forbes to be worth $130.5 billion. He became the world’s youngest self-made billionaire when Microsoft went public in 1986. https://www.naijabusiness.com.ng/news/2021/bill-and-melinda-gates-divorce-tipped-to-smash-bezoss-world-record-for-largest-divorce-settlement-of-38-billion/ https://www.naijabusiness.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Bill-and-Melinda-Gates-divorce-settlement.jpg |
The Central Bank of Nigeria has warned Deposit Money Banks (DMBS) and Forex Dealers to desist from the act of rejecting old and lower denominations of the US Dollar bills. This is according to a recent circular issued by the apex bank and signed by its Director of Currency Operations, Ahmed Umar. According to the notice, the apex bank emphasized that it has been inundated with complaints from members of the public in recent times over the rejection of old/lower denominations of US Dollar bills by the aforementioned parties- DMBs and Forex Dealers. The apex bank wondered why defaulting institutions blatantly continued this act, despite being fully aware that the old series and lower denominations of the US Dollar are legal tender for deposit from their customers. Going forward, in a bid to forestall the future occurrence of this anomaly, the apex bank promised to sanction erring or defaulting institution(s). READ: CBN to pay N5 for $1 in “CBN Naira 4 Dollar scheme” for Diaspora Remittances Commenting on the recent development, a part of the recent CBN circular emphasized that: ‘’All DMBs/authorized forex dealers should henceforth accept both old series and lower denominations of United States Dollars (USD) that are legal tender for deposit from their customers. ‘’The CBN will not hesitate to sanction any DMB or other authorized forex dealer who refuse to accept old series/lower denominations of US Dollar bills from their customers.’’ On the other hand, the apex institution warned all authorized forex dealers to desist from defacing/stamping US Dollar banknotes, as such notes always fail authentication test during processing/sorting. Naijabusiness.com.ng understands that the recent policy might be connected to CBN’s renewed drive of attracting more forex into the country, in a bid to meet local demand and boost liquidity in the FX market. This has been a major focus of the CBN in recent times, leading to the adoption of a ‘’Naira4 Dollar’’ scheme. Access Bank Plc has confirmed that it has entered into a definitive and binding agreement with ABC Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of Atlas Mara Limited, to acquire a 78.15% shareholding in BancABC Botswana (Formerly known as African Banking Corporation of Botswana Limited). According to a disclosure signed by the company’s secretary, Sunday Ekwochi, the transaction which is subject to pre-requisite regulatory approvals is expected to be sealed before the end of the second quarter of 2021 (Q2,2021). In December 2020, a renowned global finance website, Bloomberg had earlier broken the news of a possible deal between the aforementioned firms, after a tip-off by some insider sources who pleaded anonymous. According to Bloomberg sources, if successful, the deal would mark the second transaction between Atlas Mara and Access Bank, after the latter had agreed to buy the former’s Mozambique unit at the end of September. The recent announcement is a boost to Access Bank’s quest to expand its operations across the African continent. The Bank had earlier revealed its plans to be present in 22 African countries over the next five years. This goal has been the major driver in its recent acquisitions and merger including but not limited to its Cavmont (Zambia) and Grobank (South Africa) deals. READ: LASG Partner Access Bank To Provide N2bn Funding For Women Entrepreneurs Confirming the BancABC talks, the GMD/CEO of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe said: ‘’We remain committed to a disciplined and thoughtful expansion strategy in Africa, which we believe will create strong, sustainable returns for our shareholders and stakeholders at-large over the medium and long term. ‘’The establishment of Access Bank through this acquisition in the Republic of Botswana will position the Bank to deliver a more complete set of banking solutions to its clients active in and across the SADC and COMESA regions. This transaction complements our recent strategic growth acquisitions in South Africa, Zambia and Mozambique. ‘’We are building a bank of the future that Africans across Africa and the world will be proud of, and look forward to welcoming employees, customers and other stakeholders of BancABC Botswana to Access Bank.’’ Naijabusiness.com.ng gathered that the decision to sell BancABC might be connected to the recent financial difficulties the bank is facing especially with respect to the principal holders of its $81million convertible bond originally due for settlement in December 2020. BancABC Botswana is the fifth largest bank in Bostwana. It was formed in 1997 through a merger of First Merchant Bank and Heritage Investment Bank.
