Is there a chance that all of the PDP’s 12 presidential aspirants would agree to the idea of a consensus candidate, just like that? It does not seem so, not when everyone appears to believes he has a good chance to occupy Aso Rock in 2019. Senate President, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki for one does not feel there is anyone more qualified than him in the PDP primaries race. He spoke to journalists on Monday in Abuja after he submitted his Nomination and Expression of Interest forms to contest the party's presidential primaries billed for October 5 and 6, 2018. The two-time governor of Kwara state insisted that he stands out from other contenders, particularly because he brings a blend of executive and legislative experience. For him, it is important that Nigeria has a president that can bring all parties of government on board in his plan. Having highlighted his unique selling point, he said: "I believe all the aspirants will work hard and see our messages to the PDP and to the people so that they can give the ticket to the best. Like I said I have great respect for all others." With this kind of confidence, it was not a surprise that he described as inconsequential the issue of consensus candidacy by the 12 PDP presidential aspirants. "I don't think the consensus thing is the issue before us because we are trying to ensure that there is internal democracy in the system and a very credible primaries. "What is important is that at the end of the day we have something that is rancour free. What I can tell you is that we are working together because we are still part of one family. "I believe at the end of the day, we will have a process that whoever emerges will be supported by all of us. So that there will be no need dividing ourselves," he said. Besides Saraki, others in the race for the presidential ticket of the PDP are former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal; Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwabo; former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido; former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi; and a former Special Duties Minister, Tanimu Turaki. Others are a former President of the Senate, David Mark; a former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; a former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa; a former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang; and a former lawmaker, Baba Datti Ahmed. It is an open secret that there is no love lost between Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose and governor-elect Kayode Fayemi. There has been accusations and counter-accusations by both parties over the finances of the state. In latest comments, Fayose said he was not afraid of being probed by the incoming administration on the management of state treasury after his exit from power. Fayose disputed the claim of the Transition Committee set up by the governor-elect, Kayode Fayemi, that latest record from the Debt Management Office (DMO) showed that Ekiti debt under his watch had ballooned to 117 billion Naira. The panel made the revelation on Friday while turning in its report to the governor-elect. Fayose contended that Fayemi was laying foundation for “an impending failure” with the excuses of the alleged 117 billion Naira which he described as a ruse to hoodwink Ekiti people. In a statement on Sunday by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, Fayose wondered why Fayemi could not avail himself of the opportunity to clear himself of the way and manner he handled the state treasury before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry which probed his administration. The outgoing governor claimed that he did not commit the State to any financial institution in form of bonds and commercial loans. According to him, “no loan can be granted without the approval of the DMO and the Federal Ministry of Finance, throwing a challenge to the two institutions to publish details of any loan taken by his administration, including the banks that granted such loans.” Fayose said: “Unlike him (Fayemi) who was not courageous enough to answer questions on his administration before a duly constituted probe panel, Governor Fayose is not afraid of being probed either by the State or Federal Government". Fayose accused the Federal Government of deliberately refusing to release legitimate funds belonging to Ekiti State to his government. A former Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Adejare Bello, on Monday dumped Nigeria’s opposition party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP). “It is my sincere belief that some elements have hijacked the rudders of the ship of the party and changed its cause to an unknown path which I am not ready to take,” Bello in his resignation letter. Bello, who was the Minority Leader of the House of Assembly during the administration of Bisi Akande, said his letter of resignation of membership has been forwarded to the Osun PDP chairman through the party leaders at the ward and local government. He bought a governorship nomination and expression of interest form at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja to contest in the state forthcoming governorship election. He, however, withdrew from the primaries along seven other contestants. Source: https://www.naijarated.com/naija-gist/c/0/i/25356829/former-osun-speaker-dumps-pdp

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State has promised to reclaim the state from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the 2019 general elections. The party’s leader in the state, Senator George Akume, said this on Sunday at a caucus meeting in the state. The decision according to him, follows the defection of the state governor, Samuel Ortom to the PDP as well as his re-election bid. Akume said, “The PDP will taste defeat like it did in 2015”. He also accused the state governor of stealing the APC’s mandate. Meanwhile, the party has adopted the method of the indirect primaries ahead of the general elections.
