MOVIE: BUTTERFLY

Reviewer's Rating: 7/10
Starring: Ramsey Nouah, Genevieve Nnaji, Clem Ohameze

Another romance flick with its first few scenes reminiscent of Ramsey Nouah's usual 'Valentino' playboy style - using and dumping girls. Felix, as Ramsey Nouah is called in this movie, gets the help of his cousin, Florence who arranges girls for him. But meeting Chelsea (Genevieve Nnaji) changes all that as Ramsey falls head-over-heels in love with her and decides to change his ways to dedicate himself to and marry Chelsea, thinking he has found his wife! Felix does everything possible to get Chelsea but she keeps turning him down rudely. The ultimate love-vendor Felix now becomes humiliated. It turns out Chelsea is interested in another man, Ray (Clem Ohameze) who is more engrossed in his work and has no time for her.

So Felix wants Chelsea but Chelsea wants Ray. Well, someone ends up getting h** heart's desire.
The twist in this story is that it doesn't end in the way other cassanova-style flicks end.

Best Actor in this film: is definitely Ramsey Nouah. Watch the very last scene and see how he turns to a jellyfish dundee while Chelsea introduces him to Ray, her lover. Apart from the fact that the 'Mr Lover Lover' role always suits him well in movies, he also did a good job in interpreting this role the more.

No violent scenes, No sexually graphic scenes and no voodoo/rituals scene. Just your average romantic movie.

People who enjoyed this movie may also enjoy Valentino, Playboy and Power of Love.

MOVIE: BLOOD ON THE ALTAR
Produced by: Mike Bamiloye
Directed by: Mike Bamiloye, Elvon Jarrett
Starring: Abel Martins, Gloria Bamiloye, Elvon Jarrett, Elizabeth-Ore Adewole

This is a Christian film from Mount Zion Ministries. It's the story of a powerful and widely-known minister of God, Rev. Atilade Hosea who fell into sin by having a secret extra-marital affair with his secretary, Tumi - a divorced woman. This marked the beginning of chaos for him because the lady became pregnant leaving them with no choice but to agree to abort the baby. Reverend gave Tumi money for the abortion and she headed off for another town (probably to avoid being recognised as the popular Reverend's secretary?) to have the abortion, staying the night with her friend, Yetunde. The abortion however did not go right as she was rushed back to the hospital not long after she got home.

Clement,Tumi's divorced husband, meanwhile set out to look for his wife in a bid to reconcile with her after he became born-again. He located the Pastor's office and coincidentally, Clement was with the Pastor and his wife when her friend came to call them to rush to the hospital about Tumi's critical condition. The poor man never got the chance to reconcile with his wife as she was already dead by the time they got to the hospital.
Tumi, however, left behind a letter and her diary in her friend's house. Yetunde read through and discovered the truth about the affair, the pregnancy and abortion. She began to use the evidence to blackmail and constantly haunt the Pastor for money.

A minister of God in another town received direction from God about the evil acts of the Pastor and went on an investigative assignment where he met Yetunde, preached to her and converted her from her bad ways of blackmailing and made her return all the money she collected. The duo of the Pastor and Yetunde collaborated to expose the Pastor's acts leading the story to an unexpected and tragic end.

This movie is in 4 Parts! But well worth the length. No violent, sexually graphic, voodoo or ritual scenes.

Best Actor in this film: I have to give it to Gloria Bamiloye who acted as Mrs Hosea, the beautiful wife of the Reverend who faced distress throughout the story.

MOVIE: ARK OF GOD
Produced by: Mike Bamiloye
Directed by: Mike Bamiloye, Sunday Ogunyemi

Starring: Mike Bamiloye, Stephen Bamiloye, Israel Ore-Adewole, Gloria Bamiloye.

This is about a courageous Christian whose kidnap and boldness in the face of adversity became instrumental to the reunion between his father and grandfather.

The king of Iremoje village laid critically ill and about to die. The most powerful herbalist in Iremoje village sent out some boys to the city to kidnap a young boy to kill for some rituals to heal the dying king.

A young schoolboy, Deola was kidnapped and he used the Bible verses he learnt from his Mum to scare the herbalist, King and their cohorts. The herbalists believed his Bible citations to be fetish incantations and thought him to be a powerful child. Well he is, but not the kind of power they thought.

Meanwhile, his parents had been seriously fasting and praying for his return and going round all police stations looking for him.
They became afraid to kill him for the rituals and decided to return him to where he was kidnapped, but the King refuses saying his heart does not want him to go yet. He asked the boy to be called to his presence and told him about his illness hoping that he would help since all else had failed. The boys asked if the King had offended anyone or placed a curse on anyone. Turned out the King had indeed offended and placed a curse on his only son, Prince Obadepo. The boy advised the King that he should look for the Prince to pray for him and he'd be healed. This annoyed the King who had sworn never to forgive the Prince and he angrily asked the boy to be taken away from his presence.

Prince Obadepo, on the other side, had also been warned by his Pastor to forgive his father & reconcile with him to have his prayer answered about his lost son. He reluctantly did this after so much persuasion only to find his lost son there with his father.

There are two versions of this film. The English and the Yoruba version titled 'Apoti Eri'.
No sexually graphic scenes. There are some voodoo scenes and one other which might be considered a bit violent.

Best Actor in this film: Stephen Bamiloye, I loved that boy in the movie! He was brilliant.

MOVIE: PASSION AND PAIN
Directed by: Tarila Thompson
Produced by: Elochukwu Anigbogu
Starring: Genevieve Nnaji, Ramsey Nouah, Emeka Ike
Featuring: Desmond Elliot, Uche Iwuji

If you have zero tolerance for what we call "Mumu"(fool) then don't watch this film or you might break your TV screen while trying to reach for someone's head.
Passion & Pain is the story of two young and hopeful lovers - Damian(Emeka Ike) and Maureen(Genevieve Nnaji) who are both freshers in the University. Damian is from a lowly poor family but Maureen doesn't care about that as they are both truly in love.

Francis is the spoilt, rich love-vendor friend of Ola's boyfriend. Ola and Maureen are roommates. Francis the rich love-vendor spots Maureen, takes interest in her and after a few player tricks, Maureen falls despite all Damian's efforts to keep her away. Damian's loss of the love of his life affects him badly and he turns to smoking & drinking to console himself.

Then Francis decides to move abroad to continue his studies and forgets about Maureen. She goes back to Damian to beg for forgiveness and he accepts her painfully.
A new life begins for Damian and Maureen together, luck smiles on him and he gets a good job after graduation and introduces Maureen to his father as his future wife.

But Francis returns home with a wayward Afro-American wife and runs into Maureen at a supermarket one day. Francis gets back to his old tricks and Maureen falls yet again, betraying Damian once more.
What? Not again! Much worse this time, Maureen gets pregnant and Francis blanks off again, even when Maureen informs him of her pregnancy!
Here comes the mumu Damian - no, Maureen does not go back to beg him like before, but his 'mumu' acts are there for you to find out in this movie,

Best Actor in this film: Emeka Ike, the mumu himself.

MOVIE: EWE OJU OMI
Produced by: Laide Bakare
Directed by: Niji Akanni
Starring: Olumide Bakare, Clarion Chukwurah, Femi Brainard, Laide Bakare

Interesting film about the dirty game of Nigerian Politics. Chief Kuti and Tunde Adeniyi are bitter political opponents both contesting for the same public position. Chief Kuti sends thugs to beat up Tunde Adeniyi and the thugs report back to Chief Kuti that Tunde Adeniyi is dead. Chief Kuti rebukes the thugs stating that he did not tell them to kill him, that he only asked them to beat him.

In the wake of the death of Tunde Adeniyi, his political party members persuades his younger brother, Sanda to step in his place and contest so that people who supported Tunde would still vote for him. Sanda, angered by the killing of his brother, agrees to step in and carry on the fight to defeat Chief Kuti in the election. Unfortunately, Sanda's girlfriend, Iyabo happens to be Chief Kuti's daughter. On stepping into his brother's shoes, he immediately jilts Iyabo calling her a murderer's daughter and leaving the poor heart-broken girl, who is obviously in love, to weep all night. Iyabo tells her mother that she regrets being Chief Kuti's daughter and after discovering that she is pregnant, goes on to angrily challenge her father for being a murderer and affirms her support for Sanda in the election, despite the fact that he has jilted her.

Chief Kuti gets seriously taunted for being a murderer by the people. His political party drops him as the candidate after realising that he'd never win because he has been branded a murderer by the masses. Even his wife parks out of the house after being publicly derided many times as the wife of a murderer. The whole frustration makes Chief Kuti to commit suicide.

In the wake of this, Iyabo's mother disguises and visits Sanda in the middle of the night to inform him of his neglected girlfriend Iyabo's pregnancy and her own husband's death. Sanda becomes sober on hearing this and goes to visit Iyabo where the truth is revealed that his brother Tunde Adeniyi is not dead. He merely capitalized on Chief Kuti's act of thuggery, pretended to be dead and absconded the town to draw sympathy from the masses and bring victory to their party. Turns out it was a political tactic.

Sanda apologises to Iyabo for his part in the plot and promises to confess this to the press, disengage from the scheming political party and come back to start a new life with Iyabo and his unborn child.

He never got this because as soon as he finishes confessing to the press and tries to escape, his brother and other political party members get on his heels and kill him.

No sexually graphic/voodoo scenec but there are violent scenes.

Best Actor in this film - Laide Bakare (Iyabo), playing the role of a heart-broken girl who loved and lost.

nowadays, the ways and manners the producers titles movies now is ALARMING,instead of giving it titles that makes meaning, they will give meaningless titles.
Re: Nigerian Movie Reviews by Seun(m): 11:20pm On Sep 06, 2006
Perhaps that's because all the good movie titles have already been taken?

NOW AND FOREVER

***RING
Liz Benson
Desmond Eliot - Ugoma
Monalisa Chinda - Philipa
Sofia Chidi Chikere
(sorry cant remember the rest of stage names)

The movie starts when Desmond's father is about to die and as he takes his last breath he tells
his son Ugo (Desmond) to take good care of his mother (Liz).

We move on to years later where Ugo is now a grown man taking care of his father's buisness and in
a relationship with Sofia, who is at the university but staying with him at his home and they are to be
married.

Sofia and Ugo walk into th house to find a distressed Liz who says tha the house boy no longer listens
to her and is very rude. Ugo flies into an unholy rage and insists that he must put the house help in place and
goes to talk to him. He finds the houe boy's girl friend washing clothes at the worker's quarters and demands
to see the houseboy. The girl goes to call him and Ugo gives him a massive tongue lashing. the man in
enraged and speaks rudely to Ugo who immediately sacks him from him job and pays him his severence pay.

The houseboy and his girlfriend go to the girlfriend's brother's house where the houseboy declared that he
can no longer marry the gril since he is now jobless. the brother incites the houseboy to go back for more
money and he agrees and they both take each other to Liz's house. They find the women i.e liz and sofia preparing
a meal. Sofia was peeling some potatoes and the women ask them to leave immediately. Sofia takes her phone and
calls the police, but the houseboy stabs her with the knife she was using. she is rushed to hospital, but dies. There follows a lot of crying and a sad funeral where Ugoma vows never to love again (lol) He stops living (so to speak) does not eat or sleep well or go to the office. It takes the advice of of father in-law to at least revive him and he goes back to the office, but refuses
any association with the ladies even when his mother starts match-making he has a heated arguement with her and
tells her to leave him alone.

Finally, years (or is it several months) pass by and Ugoma still shows no signs of getting over his dead lover. The mother resorts to emotional blackmail and declares that if he does not introduce to her a girl on her upcoming birthday, she will
die and her blood will be on him.

Earlier, Ugo had gone clubbing with three of his friends and there was a lady (Monalisa/Philipa) there who was dancing alone and showed no interest in the opposite sex and every time one attempted to dance with her she would move away and
keep to herself. The lady would dance till morning and then leave on her own. Two of Ugos friends having failed where she was concerned lied to him that they had they had been with the lady and that she slept with everyone there. Ugo anyway was not interested and shortly left for home.

When his mother threatens him with death, Ugo goes to the club and asks for the girl he sees dancing there every friday. The bar man tells him she is called Philipa and that he can get her there on saturday morning when she is leaving. He goes that saturday finds that she is alreay leaving and rushes to talk with her. After much convincing, he contracts her for 200k to act as his girlfriend from London and stay at his place for three weeks. So Philipa moves in with him in a wierd arrangement where they must share a bedroom and be seen to be loving in front of Liz much to Philipa's irritation, but they do pull it off and eventually, the day comes when she must leave and Ugo takes her to the "airport".

After a few days, Ugo realises that he misses Philipa a great deal. He starts sulking a lot not eating well and when his mother mentions his funny mood and thinks that may be he should call Philipa, he throws a tantrum and tells her to stop talking about
Philipa because he misses her too much and runs off to his bedroom. He decides to go and look for her at the club and they both are so excited to see each other again and a lot of loving staff goes on. He takes her home the next morning and asks her to marry him and come live in the house again cos he really misses her, but she says no and instead asks him to be her boyfried, which he gladly accepts. The relationship develops as they continue seeing each other regularly without telling Liz and eventually he decides to marry her. In the process Philipa tells Ugo that she lives with her Aunt in Lagos cos she ran away from a forced marriage at home. Her parents were forcing her to marry an arrogant rich guy whom she despised.

While at the house of one of his three friends having a drink he wants to leave to to meet Philipa and tells his friends when they ask why he is leaving that he is meeting up with Philip and that he wants to marry her. His friends tell him not to marry her cos she is a prostitute and that they have all slept with her and also that she sleeps with all an sundry at the club. He asks them to swear which they shamelessly do and he rushes out. When he sees Philipa he accuses her of prostitution and breaks the relationship despite her protestations that she does not evern know the people he is accusing her of having slept with. The next day, one of the friends goes to his office and tells him that the friends had lied, that Philipa had refused their advances which is why they had lied about Philipa. Ugo rushes to the Aunts house to ask for mercy, but finds that Philipa left for her home town.

He eventually tells hi mother everything and the mother advices him to go to Philipa's home town and seek peace and reconcilliation. He goes, but Philipa has already told her parents about him and how she never wants to see his face again. So when she sees his car approaching she runs into the house to hide and for about a week, the mother and father keep telling him that she is not there. Eventually the father tells him openly that she does not want to see him and that since she ran away the first time they tried to force a man on her, they no longer interfere with her love life. He refuses to go saying that she is the 2nd and only woman he would ever love. Philipa is listening to all this thro a window.

Ugoma then decides to leave after waiting for her a whole day and tells his driver to get to the bridge and stop the car. He vows to kill himself if that will make her happy. The driver goes past the bridge and stops at an open field. Ugoma gets out angrily to confront the driver as to why he had not stopped the car and realises that the driver in fact is Philipa who had xchanged clothes with the driver. There is a happy reunion.

Nice movie to watch especially if you a hopeless romantic wink I highly recommend it
