"Full Options"? The Myths Unravelled. by Nobody: 3:09pm On Jun 07, 2009
I've seen this term used a lot on here.

Until I joined Nairaland back in 2007, I'd never heard that term, either in the US or UK.
So, what does "full options" mean? What are classed as additional extras?

1] Air con (standard on most modern cars).
2] Climate control (upgrade from regular manual air con).
3] Leather interior.
4] Electric front windows (standard on most modern cars).
5] Electric pack (includes rears, and sunroof if fitted).
6] Sunroof.
7] Cruise control.
8] Navigation system.
9] Heated front screen.
10] Amplified car audio (upgrade from regular head unit).
11] Electric mirrors (may be part of electric pack on certain models).
12] Power steering (standard on most modern cars).
13] Central locking (standard on most modern cars).
14] Heated front seats (may be part of electric pack).
15] Extra instrumentation.
16] On-board computer.
17] ABS.
18] Heated screen washer jets.
19] Rain-sensing wipers.
20] Automatic headlamps (dusk sensing).
21] Self-levelling suspension (standard on most large estate cars).
22] HID headlamps (gas discharge).
23] Alloy wheels.
24] Front foglamps.
25] Headlamp range control, manual (not on cars with factory HID headlamps).
26] Sport suspension (often part of Sport pack).
27] Sports front seats (often part of Sport pack).
28] Curtain airbags (standard on most modern cars).
29] Metallic paint.
30] Pearlescent paint.
31] Tailgate / trunk spoiler (often part of Sport pack).
32] Tinted glass (standard on most modern cars).
33] Total closure (often part of Convenience pack).
34] Auto-dimming rearview mirror.
35] Electrically adjustable front seats (often part of convenience pack).

From the list above, it can be seen, it's rare to find a single model that will have all the above fitted. Also, most cars will come with some of the items listed - i.e power steering, ABS, electric mirrors, central locking, heated front screen etc as standard. Meaning, you couldn't buy a model that didn't have these items fitted. So, when buying a car, worth noting the seller can't use these items to inflate the price, because the first owner (if it isn't the current seller) didn't pay any more to have these toys!

So when a car is advertised as "full option", it's wise to do your homework on the make / model you're looking at, as in theory, the term "full option" doesn't exist in the automobile industry. Especially if some of these "options" are no good to you. It's not uncommon to see people driving cars with Cruise Control, yet not know how Cruise Control works, some driver's have never even used it!

Or wanting a car with Sport pack, which often means the suspension is stiffer, and about 25mm lower than stock, front splitters, which of course will be torn off at the barest sniff of a typical pot-holed Nigerian road, and the stiff dampers will literally shake the car to bits. Yet, the buyer ordered the car that way, without any thought to where the car would mostly be driven.

Cue the average Nigerian mechanic "Oga, make I fit anoda suspension, I go fit the spring from regular model, the car go come raise up, no wahala for our Naija road." "But e go cost you 450,000N." On a car that cost 950,000N to buy 3 months earlier??

"Oga, I go fit d bumper from my papa V-boot, dis one wey dey ya 2005 C-class too near ground, e go soon dabaru."

Why did the owner buy a car with "optional" Sport pack in the first place?

You may have noticed I have not included automatic transmission, and the reason for that is, auto or manual are options, dependent on country the vehicle is built / marketed in.

For example, in Europe, manuals are preferred, with auto an optional extra. Whereas in the United States, or Canada, the default is auto, with manual an optional extra.

Very rarely does a standard road car come with every option available on that particular model - usually, one option that's standard is forfeited for one that isn't.

An example is a car sold in some countries may have a sunroof, but if air con is specified, the sunroof is forfeited, unless the prospective buyer is willing to pay extra to have both. These are usually specified when the car order is being placed.

A car that has every option available on a particular model, is usually a "demo car", which dealerships have for the Auto press to road test for automotive articles, or prospective buyers to test drive. These cars are often Company cars for a dealership Dealer Principle / Head of Business. These cars are often sold on after about 6 months, or a lot less, as a "pre-registered" car, often with a big discount over a brand new, lesser-spec'd model.

So, when next you're choosing a car, think wisely, when specifying "full options", you may get more than you bargained for.

Now that you brought this issue up, will you please enlight me on how to use Traction Control, and Cruise control? Thank you

Well ain't nothing gonna stop me from paying extra to have the heated seat option in Nigeria tongue I have been saving up for the past five years to have that feature in my car whilst I am cruising along the Third Mainland Bridge so not even Siena can burst my bubble tongue cheesy cheesy cheesy

eros:

Now that you brought this issue up, will you please enlight me on how to use Traction Control, and Cruise control? Thank you

Cruise Control:

This allows a pre-set speed to be maintained, without the need for the driver to keep the gas pedal depressed.
It will maintain a programmed speed, in as much as engine output would allow for the speed, and road gradients involved.
This is especially beneficial on long journeys, and reduces driver fatigue a great deal.
It also reduces fuel consumption.

It consists of:

1) Road speed sensor/s.
2) Control unit.
3) Brake pedal switch.
4) Clutch pedal switch (manual only).
5) Main control switch.

Once the car's moving, and in top gear, the driver can switch the system on (will be different in individual models).
Once the desired speed is attained, the "set" button is then depressed once, and the driver can now release the gas pedal. If the speed needs to be increased, the driver can either continiously tap the "set" button, increasing the speed, or depress the gas pedal and hit the "set" button once more, holding the newly-programmed speed.

At any time the brake pedal is depressed, the set speed is interrupted. The same applies to the clutch pedal on manual cars. The previously set speed can be recalled by hitting the "resume" button. Worth noting, not all cars have a "resume" function, and the desired speed will have to be built up with the gas pedal, and the process started once more.

Cruise control is not to be used in dense, slow moving traffic, where you need to constantly slow down, and change up or down with the gears. If cruise is activated in too high a gear for the road speed, the engine will begin to "labour", in such instances, the control unit will recognise the fact the engine rpm's are too low to sustain the speed economically, and will switch the system off.

Traction Control:

Traction control allows greater control of engine output, especially if the car is used on wet roads, or roads with loose gravel or mud.
It prevents, or reduces wheel spin, thus prolonging tyre life, and alowing more directional stability or control.
It reduces power to a driven wheel that has a greater speed differential to the other driven wheel or wheels, and diverts the most power to the driven wheel or wheels with the greatest levels of grip.

The system consists of:

1) Wheel speed sensors (ABS).
2) Control unit.
3) Main switch.

In laymans terms, Traction Control works in the opposite way that ABS does, and employs the same wheel sensors. It's very rare to find a car with TC, that doesn't have ABS.

Whereas ABS reduces braking to a wheel that has a slower speed in relation to the others, i.e on the verge of "locking up", TC reduces power to a driven wheel that has a greater speed in relation to the other driven wheel or wheels, i.e on the verge of "breaking traction" (slipping).

Traction control is common on powerful 2-wheel drive vehicles, though lots of car enthusiasts will argue, it does reduce the fun from enthusiastic driving, and a lot of people will drive with the system switched off, in all but the most slippery conditions.

Wow, you couldn't be more detailed in your explanation. Once again thank you for your time and knowledge shared. Now i know the functions of these features and will try them out next time i embark on a trip or find myself on a wet or muddy road.

I thought you have enough padding to keep you warm?
Is it melting already! wink

Heated seat is no good for Nigeria, but the back vibrating back massager in cars like Lexus LS460(?) is really comforting when you need to cool your nerves in Lagos traffic.

There is the technology option which turns your care into an office.

One of which is a new system by Ford Sync powered by microsoft, and the MyGig with Chrysler.

Another option I like is the Panoramic roof. Those that were avaliable in the Maxima, Commander were the skyview, but the new Mustang is going to have the whole roof made of glass

I concur , I am always amused to see Factory Fitted AC has a selling point for a car . Are their still cars that are manufactured with our AC , at least for the last 15 years?

You will be surprised. Even here in the US the 2004 Honda Civic HX is actually sold as A/C optional! Tho most ppl bought with A/C but u pay extra! The model doesnt even have electric window. ALL ARE MANUAL.

This is just on the HX model civic tho. All others have all good stuff.

And some European vehicles dont have AC cos its not really needed (weather). These cars often made it down to Naija.

Nice one Siena.

I wondert if any of these car dealers would come out and talk now? I have noticed what Siena mentioned in the opening post, however I always felt I will never buy from a car dealer from here am afraid (anyone remember friendl flogging off incorrect mileage car? And that is just what we know. )

Some car sellers here seem to think people are idiots around here to be honest.

Once again, nice one siena. You can sleep with your eyes closed, as no one can assasinate you for pointing out the obvious. Lol.
Re: "Full Options"? The Myths Unravelled. by Busybody2(f): 4:35pm On Jun 09, 2009
^^^ Hmmn, yes Siena mentioned it, but it is not a Unique Selling Point on NL so your take on this is moot. How many times has any customer on NL refused to buy a car from Dealer A because Dealer B is gonna sell him the same specs with full option for the same price? undecided

Siena's rant is just that and is not addressed to NL dealers at all, so quit making a mountain out of a molehill because cars on Nairaland are not expensively priced, and if you don't buy, their business would not fold, shior angry angry angry lipsrsealed

I stand by my point - I will not buy from car dealers here period. Some of them have shown they cannot be trusted - Friendl. If this is touching a nerve with you then tough. smiley

For the record, Sienna's post is not a rant. Simply because you disagree with it do not make it one. Your post on the other hand. . . erm let us just leave it like that. smiley Have a nice day madam. smiley

Oops forgot to add to my post that I have been told i have no moral compass far more times than I can count in this section, for supporting these dealers, so save your preaching to those who needs the salvation, schmuck cool

And don't buy from them, not that you can afford to anyway, bozo cool

Now get this through your thick skull, the fact that I called it a rant WHICH IT BLOODY IS, does not mean that I do not agree with it, and FYI, It is a rant, END OF, now sue me angry

@ Busy body
Do you know what type of damage a woman with full options(not the car) can do with one of those cars(full options)?!
I got my ass whopped by a young kitten(~22) on the highway, she wagged her tails at me in a BMW760; my V8 felt like slot embarassed

[s]Seems you want to add to your collection cool You remind me of Iya Aladunke
A dealer husband to supply car and another to help with maintenance smart move wink[/s]

I think engines are options too because if you check all factory options you'll easily add $10k to base price and I have never ever seen a full optioned car on here.
Re: "Full Options"? The Myths Unravelled. by sultaan(m): 11:33pm On Jun 09, 2009
Initially used cars were imported from Europe, but around 1995 Nigerians started getting cars from US (A/T) and those came with bigger engines and a/c standard(oko oloye).
I remember a family member shipping a Carina and the engine was huge compared to the ones I'm used to seeing space around engine e.g 504.

So we came up with American spec which sold extremely well, now to market an American car over others terms like full option is being used.

Basically if it is not a luxurious car, don't expect any extra option. What you will get should be standard on the trim of car/truck you are buying, so ask about the trim first.Trims are set by options either standard or available. Then there are packages.
So you can get a Camry LE with comfort package with might include moonroof, fog light, powerseat, upgrade audio and auto dim mirrors.
A tech package might include HID, nav sys, premium radio.
Comfort package might be $500 more while tech packge adds $2k, So a Camry with these packges is still not XLE, but the XLE might have the options in comfort package standard.

Hope it makes sense. You may have to see all these difference to understand the sytem of making buyers pay more

I hope i am not asking for too much Siena, please i need to know the best security device to install in my car. I recently bought a 2001 Acura 3.2 TL from a seller here on nairaland, ITACHI. I have contacted some security device sellers here on nairaland with varying prices and different functions. I am very confused right now and don't know which one to buy, whether the Remote key or the tracking device. However, i will prefer to buy the best security device that can protect my car from "our friends" wink wink as my Pastor will call them, who think they can borrow our cars, but forget to return it after use. grin grin grin Thanks for your insightful advise.
