They might as well accept the offer. What other options do they have? From the looks of things, nothing!

Thanx to Senegal for at least saving our face. Many counries in the world have been contributing and assisting in one way or the other, but so far to the best of my knowledge, none from Africa.

I see this as a good move by Senegalese President, this should at least make the Hiatians feel that they have a back up of where to return to if the worst happens. At least it is not all Africans that are very selfish, wicked and uncaring.

Wow! See how you contradict yourself?  I hope you do faintly realize, even if in the slightest bit, that Senegal is situated on the continent of Africa.

If you consider succor in form of guaranteed stay in a somewhat functional, orderly country to be insignificant, then I don't know what qualifies as aid in your book.  I would think it trumps flocking back to an abject economy that's currently in a quagmire.

Moreover, there's a link floating around here somewhere that summarizes the contributions made thus far by some countries in Africa.

@H202

Contradictions? Please go through again what I have written down. It could be that you have problems understanding me. My english is very poor, maybe because it is my second language. My first language is Igbo.

Whilst I agree that charity begins at home, and we need a hell of a lot of that back in Naija, I would also argue that Haitians need to be back home with all of us rumbling in the jungle, for better or for worse, afterall even though they had French as a language forced upon them by the French their traditions and cultural beliefs are more in tune with Nigeria than any other African Nation, I have always advocated an open door policy in Africa for our long lost brothers in the diaspora to return home.

I have to say that watching all the reports of Haiti being the first black republic and the poorest country in the Western hemisphere I saw a parallel with our own sorry land, that I would argue is the poorest country in the southern hemisphere, the similarities are endless from their blind adherence to Christianity (the religion of our oppressors) to the practice of more unsavoury spiritual beliefs.
I can also tell you from experience that these guys are very closely related to us physically and many a time I have confused Haitians with Naijas all over the world.

It could also be argued that by opening our borders to Haitians and our other brothers around the world we would be doing ourselves a big favour and ultimately redressing the man power drain that was visited upon us by the west during slavery through to colonialisation, so there are all sorts of beneficial spinoffs with what Senegal is proposing.

On a practical level Haitians do speak French as their first language and so resettling them in Africa would be best done by the former French colonies.
And of course on another level it could also be argued that a lot of undesirables might come along for the ride just to compound the recipient country's problems.

Personally my rather limited encouters with Haitians in Miami was a big let down as I found them very rude and obnoxious on two separate occasions, OK they were cab drivers and probably illegal immigrants but they were rude bordering on aggressive despite my attempts to identify with them as Africans.

What am I trying to say ??  They are very closely related to us in more ways than even they would ever dream of and it is our duty to go to their aid as they are indeed our own people, charity begins at home and it is about time they came home, if for nothing else but the promise of relative safety from the natural disasters that they are exposed to where they were forcibly put.

A very gracious move by senegal towards its neighbours

though most haitians descend fromthe traditions of the Dahomey empires of Benin republic it is quite nice to see that Senegal are extending such a gift to theri neighbours.

Its is yet to be seen if the haitians will accept this offer though,

Now now don't be jealous cause you spend most of your time chewing on them "colored greens"

The voodo traditons practiced in haiti originate in traditions of the Fon(Dahomey), Ewe, Yoruba and kongo peoples located across West Africa. Even the word originates in the Fon- ewe region Africa and their deities are much interchangeable with cultures that surrond the area.

Please ask nicely for information next time

As I said before one needs to look at the map of West Africa pre colonialism to find the true origins of the Haitian people wink

I have to disagree with a lot of people here as it seems some people here are being overly sentimental

Everybody should do what they can to help victims of that tragedy but im against this "coming home" idea especially in the Nigerian context

We get enough ethnic wahala already. WE dont even know where our so-called Nigeria is heading and Nigeria already has ethnic/religious strife left and right. Lets learn to manage our diversity first before increasing our problems. If you moved a large number of Hatians to Naija I guarantee you people will see them as outsiders who are different and very soon wahala go start.

Its fine if Senegal wants to do that though. Na them sabi

Re: Senegal Offers Land To Haitians While Nigeria Has Offered Nothing by otukpo(f): 2:42pm On Jan 19, 2010
Senegal and Nigeria are not the same.

Nigerians over the years have found it difficult to accept their fellow indigenous Nigerians not to talk of foreigners.

Another fight will be wich area of Nigeria to settle them, u can't imagine the level of politics that will be played with it.

Nigerians already have enough wahala right in their hands that even Haitians will think twice to accept being part of Nigeria.

Our house(Nig) is far from being in order, talk of political, ethinic, religious etc differences.

Its already too much for Nig to contend.

Nigeria can offer financial assistance but not land.

The poster can now edit the thread as events in Lagos State have overtaking the initial title . The amount donated by Lagos State might be up too 10% of the Senegalese budget. Kudos to fasola
