Nigerian NGOs Are Thieves! by shadoghale(m): 1:58pm On Feb 25, 2007
Dear Brethren, I just thought of putting this on the forum, I used to work for one Nigerian NGO who are in the field of "Helping Nigerian Universities turn out Quality graduates" but I was supprised that all the money been given by one of their major Donors $180,000.00 @ N 130 =N23M, was used for the self enjoyment of the Executive Director and founders.

Today SA, tomorrow ABJ for medical or , check up! When the Donor sent an auditor to audit their accounts my then ED got a way to bribe these guys out. With over 700 NGOs in Nigeria I mavel why no serious impact on peoples lives until I worked there.

EFCC Please ACT!!!!!

What is your own experience with these thieves?
Re: Nigerian NGOs Are Thieves! by lekywhite(m): 9:34am On Feb 26, 2007
shadoghale,

The way you accused your former employee sounds as if you had an issues with him, well i wont say you are wrong about but then its not all Nigerian NGOs that are thieves so u should have specified this particular NGO rather than categorising all as thieves.

I worked for an NGO also and everything here is transparent with virtually all the members knowing how the money comes in and where it goes.

let me ask you a question, if your former ED had given you a million out of the 23m that the donors gave to the NGO, would you still come and accuse them in this forum? im sure that is the issue.

Yes, that is probably the issue, but that does not excuse the actions of the managers of his NGO.

Re: Nigerian NGOs Are Thieves! by Seun(m): 9:51am On Mar 25, 2007
NGO: "non-profit" organization that collects huge sums of money from bleeding-heart westerners to "solve" problems like malaria and gender violence. NGO means non-governmental organization. It's the business of charity. wink

A very good friend of mine is the CEO of a top NGO in Nigeria, when he took over the post, he was alarmed at what he saw. But in his short term there, I tell you a lot has changed.

Not all NGOs are are fraudulent but some of those who run them.

Re: Nigerian NGOs Are Thieves! by EPOMA(m): 10:52pm On Mar 25, 2007
A lot of NGO in Nigeria are just used to support employment, All they do is travel all over the place, a friend of mine had to pay 130000 naira to go for an anger management course in South Africa and then came back to pay another $2200 to go for course in UK which a University invited them for. Should we be spending all this Amount to get trained for charity from our pocket. That money would have train many Kids in Nigeria.
I feel it is all about money making and sustaining themself

Come on guys, please double check this again:  NGO and Nigeria= what do you expect? The answer is called pepper soup, my friends.

And I blame the donor, he or she should have known better.

When a crack head is asking you money for food to feed his kids, you do not give him money, you give him food. You can never never trust a crack with money.

FYI: I believe NGO is very similar to non-profit organization.
Re: Nigerian NGOs Are Thieves! by danniecool(m): 12:29pm On Mar 26, 2007
NGOs are charity organization, which get their funds through donation from memeber of the public, and use it it helping the needy, but the people involve in running of the organization are corrupt, instead of assisting those who need financial assistance they divert the fund into their personal pocket.
tht is why people think the organisation itself is a thief.
Re: Nigerian NGOs Are Thieves! by Nobody: 3:05pm On Mar 26, 2007
I believe that, there are still some faithful individuals that run NGOs, So, not all of them are THIEVES!!!! It's all about the motives behind the operation. But, really there are still faithful ones. who are doing their best and giving out the best.

Moreover, I really do wish to work with an NGO! especially, those that care for the physically-challenged(disabled) people and less privilegded.

Anyone with a useful information could please reply this mail. I'm so passionate about it.

Thank you.

Most of them are fraudulent and often fold up after the initial grant is received from foreign donors. They primarily put out excellent proposals to get sponsors for their phony projects.

However, I know of a model NGO, Development Education Center Enugu. http://www.decnigeria.org/articles/march2006_comm_progs.html

They have grown strong over 15 years and become self sustaining through emphasis on micro-financing. It's really a model for anyone that wants to start a self sustaining NGO.

Thank you BlackMemba for that info, i'd visited the site! They are based in Enugu.
I can seem, that they are doing a great job!!! Kudos to them. But my constraint is that I'm based Lagos, hence, i wouldn't mind if i can get an NGO (International or National) that resides in Lagos.

Moreover, My dream is to establish one (an NGO) that caters for the less priviledged and disabled in the society. I worked on it during my NYSC year(see attachment) and i was able to achieve a good result, Hence, i wish to continue putting smiles on their faces!!!

My intention now is that it's either i work with an NGO for awhile before setting up mine OR set up mine as soon as i have enought fund, but don't know how to go about it.

I need some advise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the site once again.

I hope you are seriously devoted helping less priviledged and disabled Nigeria citizens. From google I found for you to contact those NGO as you mentioned above on the following links:

Provide helping 425 disabled Nigerian going school and getting jobs.

United Way International - popular non-profit organization for less priviledged and disabled citizen at the poor nations

There are more non-profit organizations for less priviledged and disabled victims using google search engine.

May God bless you and your goal making your dream become reality!

I have interacted and dealt with most Non-for-profit(NGOS) and to me a lot of 'em are just conduits for the owners to enrich themselves!Their programs are mostly vague, their results verbose and ambiguous and many donor agencies have stopped dealing with Nigeria because of the avarice and greed of many of these "businesses".It's no big deal, anyone involved in the NGO business in Nigeria would say so~many are just greedy,heartless,pen-robbers~with no significant output whatsoeverwith plenty of moral turpitude

@uspry1

Tanx for the info. Although there are no vacancies per se, Yet quite informing.

I'm presently working towards a project which is supposed to kick off in June, 2007 (i.e after election & handling over!!!). BHG

It's basically going to be a 'Youth Empowerment Forum" I want to see how to help, encourage and support some "visionless" students within my community.
It's really pathetic that a larger percentage of our youth nowadays( i mean those in secondary schools) have not fully discovered their purpose for living. Hence, they get easily influenced and live carelessly.

I greatly believe in my Country and i want to start making a positive change in my little corner.

That's true,

Actually, I'm into a small business of Knitting(the art of making Knitted wears e.g Cardigan, Sweater, Baby layette etc) with the Knitting machine. I used to have quality time for these before i started work, but right now i rarely do it except if i have orders from people.

I strongly believe in self-empowerment and encourage others into skills acquisition. But my work presently only afford me weekends. I hope to be on my own someday.

A business is a more sustainable way to make a difference Let me hear your view.

Its like teaching the hungry to fish (employment) or just giving them the fish (NGOs)

But here is another perspective.

NGOs also help in distributing wealth from the wealthy to the poor. This is good.

A debateable 80% of Nigeria's 140 million inhabitants are mostly living below the poverty line. This is not fact
If wealth is distributed, the general populace will have a stronger purchasing power and this will boost the economy of Nigeria.

In developed countries, wealth distribution is achieved by giving free health service (e.g. UK), a proper taxing system, giving housing benefits to the less privileged.

The effect of international aids can be complicated due to the fact that it creates dependency on a foreign currency and further devalues the local currency. However, I believe this could also create a saturation of foreign influx which might prevent futher devaluation. I might be wrong, I'm not an expert on these issues.

Just want to put in some little contribution in the topic. its quite true that some NGOs (both Nigerian or otherwise or Fraudulent) if you look at the 150 million Nigerian populations, what you will expect .it would be stupid for one to expect that all Nigerians are 100 % GOD fearing.
For the police to be employed there must be criminals, for the doctors, people must be ill, for the vulcanizers, your tire must go bad.
In short the life we live is a vicious holistic cycle. It’s quite wrong to categorize all NGOs as Bad or all police as bribe takers.
The issue here is what little contributions have you rendered as a Nigerian in order to make Nigeria a better place.
As for me, am proud to say categorically that as founder and member of the Beekeeping Extension Society (NGO), i have developed the Beekeeping potentials of more than 10,000 rural beekeepers in Nigeria and have records to prove that.
If there is an organization that supersedes EFCC please give the my address .Am sure EFCC know of my existence.www.biye.beekeepers.8m.net (Just don’t come after 12:00 am.You may get some surprise package.
Am proud to have proved to the International world that not all Nigerians are 419ners.
After all it takes brains to write proposals and for the proposal to win the grants.
Ask yourself what are your personal achievements.
Why are you not complaining about the millions being paid to vote hijackers , why don’t you float an NGO to sensitize kidnappers. WHY, WHY.
My brother please wake up.I can see that you are one of those Nigerians always waiting for an opportunity for someone to make money and for you just to be employed. Why don’t you provide the employment in whatever little way you can.
Let me be sincere with you I hail those Lagos yahoo boys, men these guys are smart, just that they should use it for a good cause. It takes a 419ner to fall into 419 traps.

Good evening, I appreciate your writeup and your confidence about your NGO. Pls, I started an NGO last year which deals with empowerment and gender equality (enage.org) .
I have started giving out my Little assistance but we need sponsor/donor to support your our projects, we plans to waec/neco for some ss3 students, empower some women and pay some hospital bills for surgery of some that has contacted us for assistance . We cannot do it alone. We seriously need support/donor.

The western world are always willing to help the developing countries solve their poverty problem but when they hear the poverty index figures roll out every year they are discouraged from pushing more grants to us no thanks to corrupt practices of some of the Managers of these grants.
