i think the saying is self explanatory, you asked what will be going through her mind and i said pride goes before a fall, when she was doing well she felt too big for her friends, now that she has fallen on hard times she wants them back.
unfortunately she is too embarrased to admit she was wrong initially,

may be someday, but not right now, obviously she has not gotten over her pride yet, if she had she would know that feelings of embarassment are a hinderance to what she really wishes for,
