[b]"I read your complaints about the Settler/Indigene dichotomy and many of you are calling for a constitutional amendment to solve this issue, however, the truth is that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has already abrogated that dichotomy for the simple reason that it does not recognise any difference between the two , sets of people. If there is a difference as some insist, it is only in their minds and we must as Nigerians begin the peaceful processes of rebuilding the foundations of our citizenship. As far as our present Constitution is concerned, ALL Nigerian citizens are indigenes of any part of Nigeria. And our history is replete with a demonstration of this fact. For example the Great Zik of Africa won an election in Ibadan. Malam Umaru Altine was the first elected Mayor of Enugu and Felix Okonkwo (known as Okonkwo 'Kano') was a member of the Northern Nigeria House of chiefs. Since there is precedent for it in the past, we have to remove the glass ceiling in our minds that still believes in the Settler/Indigene dichotomy. Under the Nigerian Constitution, there is absolutely nothing stopping any Nigerian citizen who has taken residency in a state, town or ward from participating in the governance processes of that State, Town or Ward including contesting elections if the individual fulfils the constitutional requirements of residency and tax payment. If Nigerian immigrants can win City Council elections in the U.S, mayoral elections in Ireland and most recently Parliamentary seats in the British House of Commons, it should certainly be possible for a Nigerian with ancestral origins from Sokoto to win an election in Port Harcourt and vice versa. As I said, the Nigerian Constitution permits it, there are precedents for it and the only thing we have to do is to give effect to our constitutional rights which speak to our unity and our collective aspirations for peaceful co-existence and greatness. True talk. But not practiced.
Mr. President, you can start practicing by scrapping "local Government identification letter or certificate". Then we can be sure you are serious.

Why would you ask for State of Origin if we don't discriminate. Mr. President, scrap it and lets have state of residence.
I posted something like this on Nairaland sometime ago.

Theoretically correct but practically wrong.

Most certainly correct!
The time of Alhaji Altime of Enugu and Okonkwo Kano are gone, because of the present situation where "local government identification certificates" and state of origins certificates have been purposely introduced to negate the so-called constitutional right of every Nigerian to pursue an office or a job in any part of the country.
Mr. president has done well to underscore the historical aspect of this issue, he simply needs to "use his good offices" to actualize it once again by removing all the bureacratic obstacles that prevent a truely one Nigeria.

Maybe if he stops wearing etibo and resource control caps, all Nigerians can see each other as Nigerians.

Will a man with Bolla Hart win Election in Sokoto?

Will a man in Danchiki win election in Ebonyi?

Will a man who wears red cap win elections in Ekiti?

May be the first step to actually practicing unity is to pretend we are united by living it in the way we associate with others, the way we dress, so that our cultural divides gets blurred.

But hoping for unity when everyday all we do is celebrate those things that divide us, I must say a united Nigeria will remain elusive.

I have never heard of Malam Umaru Altine as the first elected Mayor of Enugu. Enugu never had a major. They just want to scam or  419 northerner, where did you people get this. Even the name  Malam Umaru Altine does not look like a northerner.

Jonathan is a funny man. When omo onile collect your land in oyo state, go and tell you what jonathan said on facebook.
Where did you people see that in nigeria, even if your grandfather live in Imo, go and tell them you want to be governor of Imo state.?  Or Governor of Enugu. ? It is not possible.  The igbos would never agree. Have you ever seen a Yoruba name on Igbo list. even Jonathan appointment of NCC chief is questionable. Why would you skip people from other ethnics group because they are northerner or Yoruba and appoint Igbo, only igbos have held the position. And they keep appointing themself. that is not fair. Igbos do not even sell land to Yoruba in igboland , not to talk of making you governor. Jonathan is funny. We have problem.

Lagos that is possible , other state, it is not possible. Bola Tinubu is from Ogun state. He is related to Madam tinubu. It is only possible in lagos because most yorubas or people in lagos are not Indigene of lagos.

Have you seen where a Yoruba man become commissioner in Imo , abia or enugu  . Where is that possible in Imo , abia or enugu  NO way.    The igbo would never agree. Just look at NCC , a federal govt body, the Igbos have turn it to private properties. And Jonathan is talking.  Or the day Uche Okafor become the governor of Sokoto state. NO. It is not possible.

Jonathan is just been funny. even in developed countries there is a problem. black people dont even get that, not to talk of nigeria where most people are still not educated.

Don't forget the historical antecedent in the old Western region when Zik's election victory was denied, because he's Igbo.
I agree that the current political setup would allow non-indegines to contest and win elections outside their areas, but it's not limited to Imo, Abia and Enugu states. You should probably begin with Oyo and Ogun states.
Re: Goodluck Jonathan's Facebook Status About Settler/indigene Issue In Nigeria by becomrich3: 1:00am On Aug 17, 2010
That was not the reason zik lost. He lost because Awolowo was a better candidate. I have to tell you this. I never liked zik. I never like zik because he betray the Igbo and Ojukwu doing the biafra war.  I like Ojukwu more than zik. I am a people people. Zik was not a people people. different from Ojukwu. It was about zik and not about the igbo people. that made me not to like. If you watch old video of zik. You would never hear him say the word Igbo. But you hear him say I nearly 100 times. He talks about himself alot, he even refer to himself as a second person. I never liked him.

I hate backstabber.
