Saraki An Egba Man? by DapoBear(m): 5:11pm On Dec 07, 2010
http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2010/12/07/kwara-bombshell-saraki-is-an-egba-man-ex-ambassador-reveals/

A former Nigerian Ambassador to Cote D’Ivoire, Alhaji AbdulGaniy Folorunsho Abdulrazak has declared that the godfather of Kwara politics and the Turaki of Ilorin, Dr. Olusola Saraki, is not from Kwara State but an Egba man from Ogun State.

Saraki

In an interview published in this week’s edition of TheNEWS magazine, Alhaji Abdulrazak narrated how he became a close friend of Dr. Saraki’s father, the late Alhaji Muttahiru Saraki and what the older Saraki told him about his ancestry.

According to the former ambassador, Alhaji Muttahiru Saraki visited him one Sunday at home and they had an important and historic discussion.

Alhaji Abdulrazak recalled: “He asked me where I come from. I told him I am from Ilorin. Alhaji Saraki said he was an Egba man from Abeokuta. By this time I did not even know the existence of Olusola Saraki. So, the man told me he was from Abeokuta but he went to a Quranic School in Ilorin at Agbaji, an area reputed for Islamic scholarship. The man with his own mouth told me he was an Egba man from Abeokuta. This was in early 1963.”

Alhaji Abdulrazak disclosed that Alhaji Muttahiru Saraki introduced his son, Olusola Saraki, to him who at that time was studying Medicine in London. He recollected that at their first meeting, as the then young Saraki stretched out his hand to shake him, his father slapped him. But he calmed the elder Saraki. After the first meeting, the father said he was putting the younger Saraki in his care, stressing, “Take care of him for me.”

I thought he was a Fulani from Mali?  tongue tongue tongue
Re: Saraki An Egba Man? by AloyEmeka8: 5:23pm On Dec 07, 2010
Saraki defines himself as Fulani, another man defines him as Egba. It's like you claim to be from Ekiti but I can claim you are Ebira. Which one should people likely believe?.

P.S.
I also believe that Saraki is Yoruba no matter how hard he denies it.
Re: Saraki An Egba Man? by DapoBear(m): 5:40pm On Dec 07, 2010
Read the article carefully, it appears his claims of Fulani ancestry are false. Unless the ambassador (a friend of his father) was lying.

Anyway, I cannot knock the Sarakis for their personal ambition. Making such a claim and tying oneself to Alimi and his allies is probably helpful for internal Kwara politics. Falsely claiming Fulani has helped them to turn an entire state into their personal fiefdom.

It would have been pretty hilarious though if Saraki had been chosen by the PDP as the Northern presidential candidate and won. Many of them oppose GEJ because they view him as a tool of OBJ (also an Egba man); how pissed would they be to find that they'd chosen another Egba as the Northern consensus candidate?  grin grin grin

Here's a man who would refer to himself as "Oloye" while in the south but would prefer to be called "Malam" whenever he crosses River Niger towards the north. Now the son is proud to say he is "Bukola Abubakar Saraki", the "Abubakar" that has been so silent before the issue of presidential campaign came up.

actually its people that refer to him as that, even nobody refer to themselves as mallam either

the sarakis are smart allowing people call them whatever

are people from benue and kogi northerners or southerners?

If you call Jarus a northerner he'll answer if you call him a Yoruba he'll answer to that too

some people construe that to mean they are playing smart to gain some sort of advantage

Sarakis are aliens from pluto wink

Saraki once used his own mouth to claim malian Fulani origin. It will be a shame if proven that he is an Egba man.

One lesson episodes like this should teach us Nigerians is to accept everybody as a citizen of wherever he is born or settled as long as he is a Nigerian.

Phenotype is one aspect that is difficult to use in passing judgement. Some Igala people look purely Fulani but they have no links. But I must confess the Sarakis look like a blend of Fulani and Yoruba.

@dapobear, not that everyone knows he's egba but everyone knows he's yoruba atleast among kwarans and other Yorubas that care enough.
You can't judge where people come from solely from looks especially in Nigeria. People are always surprised to hear that I'm yoruba cuz of my looks when in fact, i'm a full-blooded one. This may be because of the stereotype that yoruba folks are dark complexioned. Gbemi can definitely be yoruba, money made her that fresh cuz there are many omo-alatas with a similar complexion.
Whatever the Sarakis wanna do with themselves is cool to me, no one is losing sleep.

yoruba creoles arent concentrated in mainly one place as obtains elsewhere, so i think that's why it's so difficult tracing any non-black yoruba origins most times. They're simply shrouded in impenetrable mystery.

by creole i mean people of indirect mixed ancestry.

not sure what's the proper pc word.

most times you can tell when someone is mixed.

it's not just about skin colour alone but also other things like bone structure, etc.

then again, the mixture could be from the mother?
Re: Saraki An Egba Man? by excanny: 8:39pm On Dec 07, 2010
The Sarakis have never denied having Yoruba blood. Their explanation had been that their Yoruba side is matrilineal, while the patrilineal ancestry is fulani.

Olusola saraki is even a member of the ilorin emirate, which is a part of the Sokoto caliphate-a fulani empire.

I highly doubt that you can look at someone and tell what fraction Yoruba/Fulani they are. Alimi was Fulani, but his son and heir Abdulsalam, his mother was Yoruba. It is quite possible that this fraction has increased over time; I wouldn't be surprised if their Emir is now 75%+ Yoruba. Even people who are 25% white mostly look black, not to talk of someone who might be as little as 25% fulani.

Most of this stuff is politics, really.

You have to remember that when Afonja began his rebellion against the Oyo Empire, a good portion of his troops were runaway Hausa slaves. And Fulani were not likely to be that numerous in Ilorin when the rebellion began. It seems plausible that a lot of these guys who claim to have Fulani ancestors instead in Ilorin instead have Hausa slave ancestors.

This was my suspicion about Saraki before reading this article, my guess was some sort of descendant of a Hausa palace slave. Instead he turns out he is Egba  grin

^^the other option is to figure out the ethnic composition of the yorubas in egbaland before what obtains today.

we dont really have a lot of information about how Islam was established in the southwest.

we know the history in northern nigeria and kwara, but not elsewhere.

obviously it must have been through peaceful migration and integration, i assume [but could be wrong] since we havent heard otherwise.

anyway, na them [politicians] sabi. It all makes for good powwow but does it matter, really.

How?

do you have a problem with the interracial girl at your work place too?
will the people of kwara live get better infrastructure if their governor was a Yoruba/hausa/igbo?

there's division in Ogun state, perhaps he is also from Anambra via Bayelsa grin

I first heard this in Jebba (kwara state) from indegenes, and also from Lagos based kwara indegenes
So, it is news to non-kwara indegenes
Many in kwara still recall while growing, how Saraki migrated to kwara from Ogun state decades ago and . . . . lipsrsealed

Kwarans are 100% Northerners, stop exposing your ignorance.
Perhaps you need a lecture on difference between region and ethnicity. Region: North, South, East, West Ethnicity: Yoruba, Hausa, Ibo etc
What is today Kwara has always been classified as North since 1914. During the provincial era pre-independence, Ilorin province(now Kwara and Kogi) was undr Northern region. During the regional system, Kwara was part of Northern region. Till today, Kwara is still North. Or can you count the 19 Northern states for me?

You are obviously mistaking Hausa/Fulani with North. Whether a place is North or South is not a natural classification like ethnicity. A mistake, so to speak, was made in 1914 and Ilorin province was classified as North, and till today, it still is. Taking it to South will involve official proclamation and boundary adjustment.

Being a northerner doesn't mean you're Hausa/Fulani. You can be a Yoruba and a Northerner in as much as you come from a state classified as North. Kwara and Kogi are such. Late Chief Sunday Awoniyi, a Yoruba man from Kogi, was a dyed-in-the-wood Sardauna loyalist and later Chairman of Arewa Consultative forum. Can a non-Arewa person be the Chairman of Arewa Forum if he is not from Arewa?

I am from Kwara, a Yoruba, and officially a Northerner, because that is what my state has been classified as since 1914.
