'Olusegun Adeniyi' Of Thisday Now Yar'adua's Spokesman! How Interesting! by batu: 12:55pm On Jun 16, 2007
Dear All,
I read the treatise by Olusegun Adeniyi (former editor of Thisday newspaper) on his "reasons" for taking up the appointment to be Yar'adua's spokeman; Nigerians can never disappoint me. How can a man who edited a newspaper that launched tirades of attack against PDP/Yar'adua, before and after the internationally-acclaimed worst "(s)election" in the history of the nation, now go on to be the spokesman for the same candidate? This is utterly embarassing but not surprising!
It is quite obvious that, given the right opportunity, the true character of the Nigerian journalists is totally different from the principle or motto of his/her article or newspaper. For Adeniyi, the choice is not based on principle or ideals; but on opportunity to "come and chop"; his wife would probably have divorced him if he refuses the appointment; and his family would disown him.
He is now the 'spokeman' for a government that his own article and newspaper have variously described as "illegitimate" and "unconstitutional"; I wonder what that makes him. This is a case of professional 'corruption' when you cannot hold on to a stand in view of enticement. How is he, in principle, different from all the corrupt peoples (Tafa Balogun, Wabara, Afikuyomi etc) that he has ripped their reputation apart as the editor of Thisday? They too, in principle, failed to hold on to a`stand in view of enticement of money.
Nigeria, or rather Nigerians, we hail thee. A nation cannot progress when it's young men and women cannot hold to ideals and principles.

Yes you are right.

To sacrifice one principle for political appointment is corrupt and opportunism. But hey, my friend the chances that you will do the same given the opportunity, at least in my humble opinion 90%, if not more.

There are various dubious reasons, Wife, friends and family pressure

Be nominated or persuaded by your peer groups.

There are geniue reasons for taking such post/appointment- to try and change things within.

On the wider picture of unconstitution or illegitimate govt- I completely disagree, this govt may have been elected on a doubtful votes,He Yar Adua was declared the winner, sworn in as the President and commander in chief. Even though I think PDP has not make so much progress than they can make but the oppostion would have been worst.

Anybody who disagree with that can go to Election Tribunal or court and get redress

A good example is OBi getting judgement to unseat a governor elected in Anambra state after UBA has been declared the winner and sworn in.

With greatest of respect, I don't know the man Yar Adua and it doesn't matter even if I know him. According to most press and geniue observer, he is better than alll the candidate sthat has been put forward and parading themselves as alternatives.

Infact some of this opposition are just looking for opportunity to be in power.

So in the final anaylsis it may be better for Adeniyi to campaign within in changing our constituional framework and the electroal system than being outside without anyone listening.

I hope he will go there and give word of wisdom to the President and tell him what the ordianry Nigerians problems are and what the press are saying.

Let us give all the support to build this fragile democracy.

May God be with me, bless me,have mercy upon me, save my soul and our Great country Nigeria.

No wonder ThisDay's news agenda's changing. They're more soft on the government. Jeez they may just slide out of public favour.

it could be a good thing too cuz he might put yar adua in check and the truth is dat yar adua seems serious but it is too early too judge.

All of u might be right. But i am more inclined to believe the worst. Remember when Remi Oyo was the President of Guild of Editors until OBJ asked her to come and chop. B4 then she was an adent OBJ critic, she even challenged OBJ that he doesnt have to lord it over people bc he was elected, that she too was elected a president of a body(guild of editors).
But we all know what happened when she eventually joined the OBJ,s boat.
Shegun's sell out will be more disastrous tha Remi's. He should just watch it. I look 4ward to him coming back to Thisday after his "tenure" like he promised. He better not join the gov than mess up and come up to say he is coming back to Thisday after selling out. I wont read thisday again. Imagine Remi Oyo serving as an editor in Thisday or Guardian, They will authomatically loose readership. SHEGUN BEWARE!!!

Perhaps this Segun guy wants to get close to Yar'Adua so in order to convince him to quit and organise new elections.

You never know.

it is shocking but am not suprise.

This is why Nigeria will never have true freedom; so many people ready to compromise.

anyway: when riding tiger be ready:

Rumour Number One in the media circle in the nation's political capital: That Segun Adeniyi might not be the chief spokesperson of the president, after all. As we went to press, no one had issued any statement on Adeniyi's responsibility and role. His status has not been defined, nor has he been designated. We have heard in political circles in Abuja that the strategy committee of the administration is considering the feasibility of hiring three other special assistants who will be in charge of Broadcast, Local and International Units of the Public Communication. In other words, there is a plan to break the Communications Office in the Presidency into various units.

Please has there been any newspaper report which states that Segun Adeniyi has accepted the job of Special Adviser to Yar'adua?

Does anyone have a link to such a report? Kindly paste it here.

@aneef,
Thank you for your analysis displayed above; it is exactly what is described as "beer palour" analysis, or "isi-ewu" analysis. It is so called because when discussing in a beer palour or 'isi-ewu' joint, one could be obviously intoxicated by the "beer" or by the smell of the "isi-ewu", to make any objective analysis of an issue. It is quite clear that 'in all ramifications', you do not know who is Segun Adeniyi, nor read Thisday editorial prior to the election and after, nor even read his own column called "Verdict according to Olusegun Adeniyi" in Thisday. So how can we measure a man's belief and principle if we cannot use his own opinion and editorials to judge him? A journalist who called a government "Illegitimate" now serving as the spokesman for such a government is an "illegitimate journalist" serving an "illegitimate goverment."
If only you can see beyond the obvious, then you will know that this government is a child in crisis of 'legitimacy' from the start and that will hamper it's local and international credibility and associations; which in turn will hamper any development project in a world economy currently dictated by the tunes of globalizations.
If young men and women of a country become as unprincipled as, or worse than, the dying generation, how will we move forward? My brother, life is more than pepper-soup and beer!

For those who are interested in 'treatise' by Segun about accepting the post, here is the link; it is inappropriately entitled "Leaving my comfort zone", but I think he should have titled it "Leaving for Comfort Zone":

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,when chips are down,  we know true nigerians

@babasin,
That's very true; for example reports have indicated that Olisa Agabakoba has rejected the offer of serving as the Minister of Justice on moral and professional grounds. Now that is a man who not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. It would have been ridiculous for him as president of the NBA, whose members monitored and declared the election as a monumental fraud, to now become the chief "law officer" of such a government; that is apart from the fact that NBA consitution prohibits its officers from accepting government positions. Afterall, the former Minister of Justice was the previous president of NBA.
When men/women are led by their belly, greed and glutonous appetite, rather than principle, their end is usually destruction. Bayo Ojo has virtually no reputation in the legal circle, and Segun Adeniyi has torn his own reputation to shreds.

the beauty of the world wide web.
nothing like 'i was quoted out of context'.
Segun Adeniyi has finally shown his true colour.
I would rather trust Ibori and Andookaa.
Men in whom there is no pretence than charlatans like Olusegun Adeniyi.
it is easy to pontificate every thursday on the back pages of newspaper while your true intentions are different.
your shame knows no limit.
i hope you made enough money to compensate you for all the shame you have amassed?

I really dont get what you guys are barking at.
Segun Adeniyi is a successful journalist who was called by the number one citizen of the country to come serve his contry.
He is called to serve the President as Senior/Special Adviser on Media in democratic dispensation,
Agbakoba rejected his offer because it was made under military dispensation so also were many other distinguished Nigerians.

SEgun Adeniyi made his mark as a journalist starting from his early days at Concord. He deserves the post the post and he has been excellently doing his job.

When is serving your country a betrayal of trust? We all did NYSC after leaving higher institutions.
You guys need to grow up and stop sucing thmb like a little kid.

Obviously, you never read his columns in Thisday.

otherwise, it would be clear to you that Segun is just another looser that deceive Nigerians for too long.

We all know how Yaradua was selected and how this has destroyed many poor Nigerians, same Nigerians that Segun pretends to be fighting for in his column.

It is either you are as gullible as i quoted above or you have been living under a rock in the past 6 to 7 years or better still, you met those comments tongue in cheek as a form of sarcasm.
kindly confirm because to the majority of right thinking Nigerians, Olusegun Adeniyi is a fraud.
Like i said earlier, i'll rather have the likes of Andookaa and Ibori.

I read his column on Thisday and i am much aware of his complaints about the "go-slow" Yar'Adua govt.
He was called to serve and see for himself how easy or hard it is to be on the driving seat of the country.
If you read his final piece on his colmn,he definitely anticipated such unwaranted and baseless posts but he felt(and i believe him so) that it'll give him an opportunity to serve his fatherland.
