Wed, 12/10/2011 - 2:15am | GEORGE AGBA and GLORIA EZEIRU

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday flagged off a N50 billion seed fund for job creation (YouWin) scheme, saying that the programme was designed to  tackle  youth unemployment in the country.

Jonathan said, at the event in Abuja, that his administration was committed to creating job opportunities for the youth by empowering them to become job providers and not job seekers.
He said the YouWin programme conceived for the purpose aims to create between 80,000 and 110,000 sustainable good jobs over the next four years.

Said the president: “In the course of the campaign for the April 2011 elections, I identified unemployment as one of our biggest challenges that we must address to unlock our vast potential. My concern is, let’s identify those that have potential so that we can empower them.

“This year when we met in Malabo, it was discovered that Africa was one of the continents where youth population is very high. In the United States of America and other continents they have population control measures especially in the area of child bearing, but we discovered that in Africa there are no such control measures.

“And I  believe that at that rate we will be able to create jobs faster. And that was why when we created the budget for this year we set aside a N50 billion fund for job creation. Today we have come up with this programme to see how we can help the young people who have the creative ability and turning such creative ability into money.”

He however called on state governors and the National Assembly to collaborate with the federal government in order to expand the programme.

Earlier, the minister of finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, stated that the scheme was not all about winning but focuses on empowering those with good business ideas to put them into use, while those without good ideas would undergo training to grow their businesses.

He said the programme was geared towards replicating what has been done in other developed economies.

According to her, “You know that unemployment is a big problem in Nigeria. We thought it was not all about talking but getting things done. It was a challenge for us trying to come up with some ideas; we are trying to do something that’s been done in other parts of the world. We want to empower our youth to start thinking of how to create jobs, not how to get a job.”

“It’s not all about winning in the competition, but it’s about empowering them to move their business forward. The programme is focusing on empowering those with good business ideas to put them into use, while those without good ideas will undergo training to boost their ideas in order to move their business forward. We will link them with banks to source for the capital they need. But more importantly, we will make sure that we monitor this programme vigorously.”

YouWin is a business plan competition aimed at job creation by encouraging and supporting entrepreneurial youth in Nigeria to develop and execute business ideas.

This is the an example of the sort of far reaching idea that the country needs to make progress. The private sector must be energised to generate wealth and employment. That is the way it is in all developed countries the World over.

The traditional drivers of development in the developed World are the military industrial complex and the private sector. Nigeria already has the beginnings of a military industrial complex with our space programme and various IT developments; so the country needs to plug any gaps by energising the private sector, especially by empowering our teeming youth population who are hardest hit by unemployment.

Let us pray that the running of YouWin will be excellent to produce the excellent results we dream of.

Great initiative.

80,000 to 110,000 jobs in four years very poor, Gej n Iwela should set our steel companies, refineries, n other government dead companies up wit the 50bn, i tell u not less than 900,000 people will be employed at a go, its time they stop this rubbish of creating jobs for their families, senators and reps, governors and ambassadors, in the name of nigeria youth, when we have over 150,000 graduate every year.

The 50billion is to help Nigerians get off their arses, instead of praying that the FG will give them jobs at steel companies and refineries. We arent a communist country.

How do you know? Abi your office is in Okija?
You are a prophet a doom, sadly.

The govt has done well with the idea, it is for the youth to test it by forwarding their business plans. I hope the process will be televised like Dragons Den, that will even make it self-sustaining from advert fee's.

To create 110,000 in 4 years is a tip of the iceberg where the Nigeria job creation committee acknowledge that there are 12 million unemployed on their website.o

The FG should use the 50 billion allocated in the 2011 budget year for training as many jobless as possible in short term onr week edp program mes and agriculture related  jobs for the trainee to be able to create jobs for at least 10 per beneficiaries which will at least give 6 million jobs in one year.

They can repeat the fete in 2012 and by 2013,there will be hardly any unemployed in Nigeria.

If they want to continue on the approach of the ivory tower planners and executors to solve the problems of unemployment they will never solve this problem and will multiply the number of recruits for the terrorist, smuggler, prostitute and armed robbery industry of Nigeria.

I had submitted over 10 free ideas to the Job Creation Committee.
They appear to listen to those who are interested in chopping the money on irrelevances such as conferences, reimbursable and salaries for pseudo consultants.

Go and start a business. The govt has opened the way for you, why won't you sieze it? shocked
Govt does not need to train unemployed people, instead those unemployed people can start businesses to employ and train others. The FG can't continue acting like a granny to all citizens, that is more the job of local govts.

is this how GEJ intends to create thousands of Steve Jobs in Nigeria? Another waste of money!

This is like a farmer that plants a seed amount weeds and is expecting a bumper harvest! Complete insanity

So long as the structural set up of the economy is flawed as even GEJ has admitted to, and there is no visible sign that something is being done to fix the structural flaws, the impact of this will not go beyond the pockets of political associates.

My take is competitions like this should be left to training institues; budding idea centers, colleges, schools, universities, etc with the active backing of the FG through her agencies.

Very good idea from GEJ, but the important aspect I have highlighted up there. If the private sector is not functionning at full capacity, there is no way this will work. Because as at now most people feel it is very dificult doing business in Nigeria its diffuclt to access funds, the cost of starting up the business and even maintaining it is really high, and now that they are removing fuel subsidy, it will definately drive the cost of things up. So Nigeria is a case where you income goes up as inflation rises. Like I said its a good idea, but they need to make the private sector very very efficient
