One of the key ministry that drives infrastructural development is the ministry of works. Combining this ministry with other top ministries (power and housing) is a key factor that determines the under performance of the Babatunde Fashola led ministry of works. The recent list of ministerial nominee, with two nominees from 7 states is a proof that this non functional union of the 3 powerful ministries will lead to separation soon. 4 of these nominees are prospect for this key position. Babatunde Fashola (Lagos): Former Lagos State Governor and current minister of Power, works and Housing. He was nominated for the ministerial appointment after the giant stride in infrastructural development achieved by his administration in Lagos. The scorecard for the ministry of works under him is below average, probably, due to the reason stated above. A lawyer by profession. An alumni of the prestigious University of Benin. Mustapha Baba Shehuri (Borno): Former member of House of representatives representing Maiduguri Metropolitan constituency and current minister of Power, works and Housing. Prior to his nomination as minister, he has been a politician who rose from being a councillor to the National Assembly. He studied sociology and Anthropology. Adegbite Olamilekan (ogun): Former commissioner for works and infrastructures under the Amosun led administration. A graduate of University of Lagos, An Architect with over 2 decades experience. To his credit, he was a key player in the team (Modulor Group) that designed the 124m high Union Bank building on Marina street, Lagos. His administration construct several bridges and roads, infrastructural maintenance. Rauf Aregbesola (Osun) : Former commissioner for works and infrastructures under Lagos State and former governor of Osun State. Some recorded that he was the brain behind Tinubus' success as governor. An alumni of The Polytechnic, Ibadan where he studied Mechanical Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Nigeria Society Of Engineers (NSE) and Nigerian Association of Technological Engineers (NATE). |
GoTV:how does your comment stop this menace? you only wish to incite religious intolerance.... |
This is a giant stride and i hope it heralds other infrastructural project that brings development to the country. The civil works are good from view, but the Nigerian government should not spoil the whole thing by acquiring a 1938 model locomotive for this project. There should be a high speed train ( the operating speed must be at or exceed 200km/hr and high level of service). With this, the 156km railway will be able to meet up with a travel time of less than an hour. It will also relieve our major highways of some amount of traffic loads. |
Its so disheartening. The corrupt status of this country has permitted so many illegality. Until we have a trustworthy system that checks and approves the structural integrity of any structure, we will keep recording such lamentable scenario. The major issues to be tackled are substandard material strength, soil test report with an approved structural drawings, construction procedure/ quality control. Greediness by contractors and even clients, in the name of cutting cost needs to be checked. More importantly, contractors should also pay more attention on the safety of their workers. Provide necessary PPE, employ an HSE officer or spend some token to train your site engineers . Human are important than the cement and reinforcement. It is sheer excessive wickedness to spend much to secure your materials and not secure the manpower. |
