Foreign AffairsBREAKING: Sustained Gunfire Heard Near Government Headquarters. by NigerianObserva(op): 4:26pm On Feb 01, 2022
Heavy gunfire was heard on Tuesday in the capital of Guinea-Bissau near a government compound, where a cabinet meeting was being held, a Reuters reporter said. It was not immediately clear who was firing the gunshots.

A security source with contacts inside the building said people had been hit by the gunfire. A second source said two people were dead, but it was unclear if they were security forces or those who launched the attack. Political instability has blighted the country for decades. Nine coups or attempted coups since independence from Portugal in 1974 have hobbled efforts to pull the economy beyond its reliance on the export of cashew nuts.

PoliticsNigeria And Indonesia To Cement Defense Ties. by NigerianObserva(op): 1:57pm On Jan 31, 2022
Following a meeting between the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria Usra Harahap and the executive vice-chairman of Nigeria’s National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Mohammed Sani Haruna, both countries accepted a draft letter of intent on bilateral defence cooperation.

The NASENI’s mission is to further the transfer of technologies to Nigeria in various areas including defence and aeronautics. Haruna told The Guardian Nigeria that Indonesia would assist the country in developing “aircraft, both civil and military, the armoured personnel carrier, and other equipment needed by the military”, with approval from the Nigerian Federal government.

Reports from the previous week furthermore indicate that NASENI is planning to procure N-219 transport aircraft and two helicopters which would be manufactured domestically (although it is most likely that only the assembly phase would take place in Nigeria). Other military equipment included in this forthcoming deal could include armoured personnel carriers as well as hangar equipment from the Indonesian company PT Dirgantara.

Links between the two countries go back to 1965, when Indonesia opened a diplomatic mission in Lagos (later transferred to Abuja). Ties have, however, been quite loose up until the 21st century, when both countries’ heads of State visited each other in 2001, 2005 and 2006.

Nigeria is Indonesia’s second largest trade partner in Africa, and both countries are involved in international organizations such as the Organization for Islamic Cooperation, the Developing 8, or the Non-Aligned Movement. Military equipment has not been at the core of their economic links, rather focused on energy, civil aviation and agriculture.

Their willingness to develop defence cooperation was displayed during meetings held in 2019 and 2020 between Nigerian and Indonesian diplomats, including an encounter between the Indonesian ambassador and Nigerian Minister of Defence Bashir Salihi Magashi. In addition to the procurement of Indonesian equipment, cooperation in the field of military training had then been mentioned.

The rapprochement that has been taking place over the past few years shows that this relationship is viewed positively on both sides. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his willingness to develop technological and industrial know-how in the country. Indonesia, for its part, deepens its ties with an important player in the region, while securing the export of its N-219 transport aircraft, which is still undergoing certification. With this agreement, Nigeria could join China, Mexico and Turkey, which have expressed interest to the Indonesian manufacturer Dirgantara in the past years for the procurement of the aircraft. The relationship between Nigeria and Indonesia is therefore on the rise, but it has experienced some bumps in the road in the past.

Notably in August 2021, when a Nigerian diplomat was mistreated by Indonesian border control officers, which triggered a diplomatic incident between the two countries… The announcements of the past few weeks have restored a calm climate and it seems that neither of these two are seriously willing to break this budding romance.

PoliticsThey Tried To Bomb Me In Kaduna But Failed - President Buhari by NigerianObserva(op): 12:59am On Jan 21, 2022
President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that there was an attempt to bomb him in Kaduna.
The President, who is currently in Kaduna, recalled how he narrowly escaped being bombed near the Kawo bridge.

Buhari, who is in the state to commission some projects executed by Governor Nasir El-Rufai, said the incident happened while he was travelling to Katsina State in July 2014.

The President, who was at the newly constructed Kawo bridge, said " there was an attempt to bomb me here...there was a market nearby."....but his security escorts were vigilant.

The Kawo bridge was a project, many said had become a cynosure, which had attracted many tourists to Kaduna since its completion.
Buhari also commissioned the ultra-modern sports and shopping complex at Murtala Square Kaduna, where he reiterated the likelihood of his living in Kaduna after leaving office.

PoliticsProvide Evidence You Killed Two Bandit Kingpins In Zamfara, Gumi Tells Military by NigerianObserva(op): 6:53am On Jan 05, 2022
Controversial Islamic scholar, Dr. Sheik Ahmad Gumi, has asked the Nigerian military to provide evidence of bombardment and the killing of two notorious bandits at Zamfara forest last week.

Gumi also insisted that what was required to win the war was dialogue.

The media consultant to the cleric, Tukur Mamu, who spoke on behalf of Gumi, told newsmen in Kaduna on Tuesday that in most cases, innocent lives died during raids by the Nigerian military.

He noted that during one of their visits to a forest in Niger State, bandits showed them a whole settlement that had nothing to do with banditry, bombarded by the air force.

He said, “The simple question is that we should ask ourselves from these reports that they are saying that they’ve bombarded this camp and that camp, is there any evidence on the ground?

“There is a particular forest we visited in Niger State. The whole of the settlement had been bombarded. This settlement has nothing to do with bandits. In fact, they showed us two wells full of innocent people, dead, casualties of these bombardments.

“That’s exactly what these bandits were telling us. They said whenever we hear the sound of an aircraft, we run to our caves and then run. If they will succeed in killing anybody, it is the small children, the wives or the cows.

“That’s their own testimony. So, you can imagine a country where, for example, bandits would gather in a forest and be celebrating. You don’t even have the intelligence to track them and eliminate them. Then, you say you will succeed in killing them.

“I hear them yesterday celebrating the reported death of bandit leader. So, for example, if you kill one bandit leader and another one emerges, what benefit did you derive?

“For example, you killed Dogo Gide, a person more dreaded than him emerged. When they killed Buharin Daji, Turji emerged. So, what’s the success there? And for us to even be celebrating. There is nothing to celebrate, the only thing we can celebrate is that if our military succeeds in crushing them all and they cannot.”

Going into dialogue with the bandits, he said, was not a sign of weakness, noting that the peace enjoyed in the oil-rich Niger Delta, was as a result of dialogue the late President Umaru Yar’Adua entered with the militants there.

“You have to address so many economic issues and so many issues of injustice. And then for you to pursue the path of dialogue. It is not a sign of weakness. That’s what Yar’Adua initiated in Niger Delta.

“Do you think the silence we used to hear now from Niger Delta is because of guns? Is it because of military might? There are many top militant commanders that have been on the payroll of the Federal Government for the past eight years. They are the richest now, top militants, commanders.

“But this is a silent issue that nobody knows. But that is the reason why you can explore oil and then exploit it. The only reason why their own is different is because the Federal Government knows that if they didn’t do something there, it will affect the whole economy. That’s the issue,” he added.

Recall that the pan-Northern socio-political organisation, the Arewa Consultative Forum, through its National Chairman, Chief Audu Ogbeh, had showered encomiums on the Nigerian Air Force over the onslaught that killed the two notorious bandits in the Zamfara forest.

Ogbeh urged the military to sustain the onslaught until the bandits surrendered.

His abduction comes after the former banker kicked off his governorship campaign in Onitsha

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Aburre has called on the electorate in Anambra State to vote for the party's governorship candidate in Friday's election, Obiora Agbasimalo, despite being missing.

The politician was reportedly kidnapped on Saturday, September 18, while leaving a campaign ground at Ezinifitte, Nnewi South Local Government Area.

He was said to be going to Azhia in the Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.

His abduction comes after the former banker kicked off his governorship campaign in Onitsha, the economic hub of the state.

Meanwhile, the emergence of Agbasimelo as the governorship candidate for the party in the November 6 governorship election in Anambra was was followed by an internal crisis in the party.

The crisis threw up a faction in the party.

One of the leading aspirants at the beginning of the governorship race, Nnamdi Nnoruka, was allegedly kidnapped by unknown persons and forced to withdraw from the contest.

Speaking at the party's final campaign on Thursday, Aburre said voters need to “shine their eyes” in the November 6 governorship election and appoint someone who has shown care to them with his personal resources.

He boasted that the Labour party would win the election to bring meaningful governance to the state.

According to him, the party was not demoralised despite having its candidate in kidnappers' den.

“We are not deterred by continuous disappearance of our candidate because we trust God to bring him back to us after his victory come November 6.

“The goodwill of the people towards our candidate and his philanthropic gestures will hold sway for him to come serve the people as he had indicated interest,” he said.

Aburre claimed it is only the Labour Party that can provide good governance in the state, noting that some other parties that were in had failed the people.

“We are going to change the narrative, no propaganda, all political appointments in the state must be shared equally amongst the three senatorial zones of the state.” he said.

Aburre said other contenders in the race are afraid of the intimidating credentials of its candidate despite the fact that his whereabouts have been unknown since he was taken.

He expressed confidence that the party's candidate would be victorious on Saturday.
