Very familiar refrain. What I'm looking for are the stats that extended driving is a major cause of CVT failure.
PS. I recall there was a similar theory that heat was the primary cause of the failure of the tranny in the 6th Gen Maxima, and that an extra cooler would obviate that eventuality. As it turned out, the Achilles heel of the 6th Gen was actually the design of its shift solenoids. Again, Nissan ran away from that transmission and installed CVT mid-cycle of the model.

You will not find stats because this is a case of "those who know, know"

IF YOU CONFIRM: The maximum vehicle speed is, or was, reduced by the CVT fail-safe logic after continuous operation under the following conditions: - High RPM and/or high speed driving (RPM of 4000+ or speeds of 65 mph [104.6 km/h] for 1.0 - 1.5 hrs.or more) - Driving in ambient temperature of 96 degrees or higher - Climbing steep or extended hills for 6 miles (9.6 km) or more - Whine or rattle type noise occurring during reduced ‪engine‬ performance (vehicle speed decrease) NOTE: Before applying this bulletin, check and repair any DTCs first. To be fair, Nissan, later on, had an updated version of the radiator, that seemed to have fared better. At any rate, when a new model of the Pathy was introduced they installed a cvt in it, naturally making away with the former type radiator.

Nissan discontinued the radiator after 2012. It was inherently bad. I'm yet to read anywhere that Nissan's panacea it's " formally identified concern" on the cvt is to refrain from extended travelling.

I ask, did Nissan really need 7 years of complaints and failures and law suits to discontinue that radiator?

Surely you dont expect a vehicle maker to tell the world that it cannot travel in its vehicles, that's not how it works.
Nissan has had an obviously high failure rate with CVTs all the way from 2002 till date but you will never see them admit that it's bad.
This is despite all the evidence, settled law suits and current law suits, all focused on their CVTs.
I can personally guarantee one thing though, a Nissan CVT with an additional external cooler will outlast one without it.

From Japan (with Asia) across Europe to the US, the CVT virtually became standard on Nissan cars from 2007 or thereabouts. Would you be contending that no Nissan car is to be trusted with extended travelling since then?

If the Pathfinder 2005- 2012 all have the rupturable radiator you shouldn't find this so hard to believe.
Also, if the CVT wasnt a formally identified concern, Nissan wouldnt specifically increase its warranty timeframe from 5 to 10 years

I know CVT generally gets hot super fast..... Will Altima 2009 need an external cooler installed or the design has been improved on this production?

PS: Not really a frequent travler. She's on 250k presently

I can say this with pride. Having driven a 1998 Nissan Primera, 2001 almera, and 2005 altima... We Nissan owners are just too comfy enjoying our rides. My current 2005 Nissan murano aka the workhorse has never given me any headache. Still on same gear and engine. Still travels Enugu to Lagos. Still starts at a go, never dropped me on the road, and I began to wonder how unrelated I hear the stories online. If you ask me I would buy another murano at the drop of a hat! Infact I would buy a Nissan any day anytime. Las Las na our maintenance culture be the ish. Take care of your ride and it would do same.

I have seen someone pour in manual gear oil into his engine because he was advised to do so as engine was smoking.. But Not gear oil ke.

Here's a quick tip, if it's not too late.
Stop traveling with the Murano.
The CVT is a poor design and it overheats during extended driving.
Except you have an external cooler installed, damage is imminent.
