Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday lamented the delay in court processes which often get high profile corruption cases stalled. Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has lamented the delay in prosecuting high profile corrupt cases by the various anti-graft agencies in the country. According to Punch, Osinbanjo noted that only seven high profile corrupt cases have been concluded since 2002, observing that the delay by the anti-graft agencies in prosecution was responsible. The Vice President who was represented by the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay, SAN, made this disclosure on Wednesday at a sensitisation workshop on sections 306 and 396 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 and delay of high profile corruption cases in Nigeria. The Vice President stated that though he was not an advocate of “conviction at all costs in high profile cases,” the delay tactics often deployed by defence lawyers to frustrate the course of justice in high profile corruption cases were unacceptable. Osinbajo further noted that only about eight high profile cases had been concluded with the prosecution successfully securing convictions since 2002. Osinbajo said: “It is a sad truth that of all the high profile cases filed since 2002 when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was established and corruption was first actively identified then by the President, Olusegun Obasanjo, as the number one monster devouring Nigeria, only about eight high profile cases have been concluded with the prosecution successfully gaining convictions from the appropriate courts.” He added that only one of the eight convictions was reversed by the Supreme Court on technical grounds. He however did not name the cases in which the eight convictions were secured but it will be recalled that the Supreme Court on December 13, 2013, discharged and acquitted a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State, Chief Bode George, of criminal charges on which he had earlier been convicted by the Lagos High Court and the judgment affirmed by the Court of Appeal. |

Lagos State Government yesterday shut
down 53 churches, mosques and hotels
over noise pollution and environmental
nuisance in the state.
Some of the worship centres were shut
because they were converted from
residential apartments to places of worship
thereby contravening the law and
constituting nuisance to neighbours.
Lagos State Environmental Protection
Agency, LASEPA General Manager, Engr
Rasheed Shabi, while commenting on the
closures said the agency received lots of
complaints from residents and neighbours
of the worship centers
“In recent times, most of the petitions kept
coming back to us. It was as if we are not
working at all.
That was why we shut the premises. You
cannot have makeshift structure and say
you want to be conducting services or vigil
there.
Definitely, you will be disturbing your
neighbours.
So, the government won’t allow the use of
makeshift facilities as a church or mosque.
Nobody is allowed to make noise above 55
decibel during the day in the residential area
and only 45 decibel is allowed in such area
at night.
In the industrial areas, 90 decibel of noise is
allowed during the day while the noise rate
must not exceed 80 decibel at night in such
areas.
The compliance level is increasing. More
residents now understand the effect of
noise.
Some of the religious houses are also
complying with the noise pollution
regulations,”. |
