Commuter passing various highways in Anambra state, particularly along the Onitsha/Owerri dual carriageway are groaning under heavy traffic gridlocks caused by police road blocks on the highways.

The areas mostly affected by these gridlocks are Obosi by-pass under the newly completed second Niger Bridge fly-over, the Ozubulu Police Area Command Headquarters, the Ekwusigo Local Government Area Headquarters also at Ozubulu and Okija junction all along the Onitsha-Owerri dual carriageway.

Speaking to newsmen over the ugly development, a concerned citizen and Chairman, Board of Trustees, BoT of Importers Association of Nigeria, IAN, Chief Gilbert Bravo Obi called on police authorities in Anambra state command to urgently monitor the activities of their subordinates at these road blocks.

Obi lamented that the negative consequences of the commando style of these policemen at the road blocks are gradually becoming too inexplicable that law abiding commuters are no longer comfortable with the presence of these policemen on the highways.

Obi insisted that the manner with which these policemen block both sides of the express roads with condemned motor tyres and drums and then leave only a small space where they would flag down every incoming vehicle.

He said by so doing, while the policemen would be demanding one thing or the other from each of the drivers passing through the road block, the gridlock would build up two miles or even more

He therefore suggested that if the policemen are suspecting any vehicle, they should order the driver to clear out of the road for searching while others continue with their journey instead of wasting commuters time.

“People are not against police check points or roadblocks on our highways because of the security challenges of our time but against the lackadaisical attitude of the policemen which usually causes the heavy gridlocks and put law abiding commuters into unnecessary hardships”, said Bravo.

Reacting to the development, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Tochukwu Ikenga told newsmen on phone that he would reach out to the command monitoring unit to intensify efforts towards arresting the situation.

That boat has since sailed the day Kanu was arraigned before a Federal High Court.

The same people that claim that the Nigerian govt through influence of the executive arm are disobeying court orders are now seeking for the same executive to disregard the same ongoing judicious process and by fiat, order the release of Kanu.

I want to use this medium to advice President Tinubu that the demand from the SE political class for Kanu's release and if granted by his office , is to pitch Tinubu against the north.

Releasing Kanu will not and will never see the SE voting Tinubu in 2027 rather they (SE) will align with the disgruntled north to vote him out.

Tinubu should allow the judiciary that has been invoked to continue hearing the matter brought before it by the Federal Govt of Nigeria Vs Nnamdi Kanu.

The sudden demand by SE politicians and elites for Kanu's release (which they never did under Buhari) is to pitch Tinubu against the North against 2027 re-election.

Tinubu, should rather continue with his similar hard line reformist style on the economy by ensuring that the judiciary process already invoked continues till the end.

When the case before Kanu is finally decided with an inevitable guilty verdict, let them beg Tinubu for a pardon .

What I know is that once Tinubu secures a second Term in office post 2027, you will see how the same people rallying for Kanu's release will abandon him and begin to lobby instead for a VP position in the APC to replace Tinubu's govt in 2031.

Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has stated that the power to release the Biafra agitator rests with President Bola Tinubu or the Attorney General of the Federation, not the Service Chiefs.

Ejimakor also noted that Tinubu’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, lacks the authority to release Kanu.

He urged those making false claims that Kanu’s matter is a security issue to stop, stressing that it is a matter of self-determination.

The constitutional lawyer stated that self-determination is not a political offence and is not considered a crime anywhere in the world, including Nigeria, under Article 20 of the Nigerian law and the African Charter.

Posting on social media, Ejimakor wrote: “Freeing Nnamdi Kanu lies with the President, not the Service Chiefs. Those peddling the fallacy that the matter of MAZI NNAMDI KANU is a ‘security issue’ should stop. The truth is that his matter is a ‘self-determination’ issue, which is within the purview of the President/AGF, not the National Security Adviser. Nobody is killed by mere broadcasts.

“When you take anybody to any court in any country in the world and tell that court you want the person because he wants a Biafra, they will tell you to go to hell. You are a kidnapper extraordinaire. Whether you are a government or not, you are a rogue. You should not try anybody in court for wanting a separate nation.

“That is how Nigeria was founded in 1960. That was how the Midwest region was created in 1963. That is how Nigeria lost Southern Cameroon to Cameroon. It is either called a referendum or plebiscite, and that is how Nigeria got Adamawa, the former Southern Cameroon, into Northern Nigeria.

“Why should the Biafra issue be different? It is only a crime in Nigeria. IPOB is only considered a terrorist organization in Nigeria but not globally. This highlights that we hold something in Nigeria, which is why Nigeria ambushed Nnamdi Kanu and kidnapped him.”

This comes as Southeast governors revealed plans to meet with Tinubu to discuss a political solution for Kanu’s release. Additionally, Southeast lawmakers met with the Attorney General of the Federation last Wednesday.

During the meeting, the senators appealed to Tinubu to order Kanu’s release, stressing that his release would boost social and economic activities in the South-East zone.

A Nigerian couple has been sentenced to life imprisonment in South Africa after being convicted of human trafficking.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reports that the couple was also charged with keeping a brothel.

Thirty-four-year-old Jude Ijegulu and his partner, Elizabeth Botes, 29, from Centurion in Pretoria, were sentenced by the Pretoria high court.

Ijegulu was sentenced to two life terms on two counts of rape and a further two years for being in the country illegally.


Prosecutors told the court that Ijegulu and Botes ran a brothel in Centurion from November 2016 to September 2017, where they kept two women.

“The man raped the two women and supplied them with drugs, as well as physically and sexually assaulting them,” Lumka Mahanjana, national prosecuting authority spokesperson, said.

“The couple would also instruct the two victims to render sexual services to clients.

“The judge found that the two violated the Human Trafficking Act. The man enslaved the two victims and fed them drugs.”

The court ordered that Ijegulu’s name be added to the national register of sexual offenders.
