The words I gave were borrowed directly from English and so,by lending to Igbo, English has influenced Igbo language.
Educate yourself before looking for whom to educate.
hope I'm not exchanging words with a regular nairaland idiot. If Vladimir Putin says 'welcome' it would mean that 'welcome' is Russian and that russian language borrowed from English?

Onyiiobi7735:

Igbo borrowed Kongratuleshon from English, redio, computa from English.intanet from English.
English itself borrowed Animal from the Igbo word anumanu.
You mean all those are Igbo words? Most of the words have Igbo language alternative. An Igbo speaker sometimes using some words which have Igbo language alternative isn't same as influence on Igbo language itself. The speaker simply lacks Igbo language vocabulary. The influence is when origin of Igbo words are from other languages. It is same about other languages, if not worse. Assign some thoughts to your brain before writing.

Igbo language had some influence from English but even English language itself was heavily influenced by French and Latin languages.
About 50% of English words came from French alone.
For example the word Cuisine is a French word for kitchen, borrowed by English.
Dangerous from French "Dangereux.
Marvelous from French Marvelleuse
boutique from French Boutique meaning Shop
Words ending with -graphy came from French.
Likewise those ending with - tion like education, communication, salvation, intervention, liquefaction, etc
can you mention the English influences on Igbo language?

Family / Divorce: Family Denies Court Granted Custody Of Children To Prophet by Noneroone(m): 9:13pm On Oct 15, 2023
The family of Lilian Chibuzor Abua, whose former husband, Ayodeji Obayan, dragged her to a customary court in Akure, the Ondo state capital, over an attempt to change the paternity of his four children, has stated that the court never granted Obayan the paternity of the children.

The family emphasised that Obayan could not be granted the paternity of the four children to Prophet Obayan because he failed to perform the marriage rites according to Igbo tradition, from where his estranged wife hailed.

Speaking on behalf of the family, the spokesperson, Emmanuel Azubuike, said there were misconceptions in the judgement of Magistrate Rotiba, clarifying that the earlier order of the court ceding the children to Lilian Chibuzor stands, and there was no contrary order to that effect.

Azubuike maintained that it is forbidden for anyone who did not pay the dowry or bride price for their daughter from Igbo land to have custody of the children during the course of the relationship.

The family spokesperson explained that Chibuzor Lilian, who hails from Abia State, never had a bride price or dowry paid by Obayan, who hails from Ondo State. He emphasised that there was no legal binding on them as a couple despite living together for over 23 years.

He said, “In Igbo culture if a woman gets pregnant out of wedlock and gives birth without the dowry being collected by her family, the child bears the woman’s maiden name.

There is no way the father of the child can lay claim to the child or children if he has not paid their mother’s dowry.”

“Let it be known that the children from this union are not kids; they are between 16 and 23 years old, and they are grown and can make decisions for themselves.

They saw the maltreatment being meted out to their mother by a man who was supposed to be their father. Now they are happier without him and have chosen a path of happiness without Ayodeji.”

Azubuike stated that the family agreed with the family’s lawyer that the court does not have the vires and the requisite jurisdiction to determine the same, except for the last child of the ‘marriage’ who is still 16 years old.

According to him, the court ruled that the petitioner failed to establish the existence of a valid customary marriage.

The judge mentioned that although they once lived together and had four children, he had no hesitation in dissolving the union based on the fact that the woman is now legally married to Prince Abua-Obi.

There were media reports claiming that an Ondo Customary Court, presided over by Magistrate Stephen Rotiba, had awarded custody of the four children to Prophet Obayan, but the Abua family refuted these claims, stating that no such decision was made by Magistrate Rotiba.

Politics / Soludo Renames Anambra International Airport After Chinua Achebe by Noneroone(m): 3:49pm On Oct 01, 2023
Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, has renamed the state’s International Passenger and Cargo Airport after late Chinua Achebe, a novelist, to immortalise him for making an indelible mark on the history of human civilization.

Recall that Achebe a native of Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, died on March 21, 2013, at age 82, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Soludo said this on Sunday in Awka at the Independence Day parade, to mark Nigeria’s 63rd anniversary, describing Achebe as an example of Africa’s unsung hero.

“Achebe, a Nigerian novelist, poet, and critic, gave the African literature an identity and a voice and he rightly reconstructed and refined the identify of the people,” he said.

The governor said that Achebe was not just an Anambra hero nor a Nigerian hero, but an African and global hero and yet largely unsung at home.

He said that henceforth, the state shall be deliberate in fishing out and celebrating its largely unsung heroes as motivation to children and youths.

“Unfortunately, some people wrongly think of legacies in terms of brick and mortar. Legacy is about impact on human life and human civilisation.

“Achebe was not a president or governor or military. He did not build bridges or roads or airports but he will outlive most presidents, governors and ministers in our minds.

“Achebe rejected Nigeria’s national honours twice in protest against what he perceived as injustice to his home state Anambra. Today, Anambra will finally honour him.

“After wide consultations, there is a broad consensus that no one is more deserving to be named after the first airport in Anambra than Anambra’s all-time greatest literary gift to the world, Chinua Achebe.

“Consequently, we will rename the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport, Umueri, to Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri.

“Yes, it has to be an international airport, and we hope to work with the Federal Government to give full effect to its international status,” he said.

Soludo urged Nigerians to be intentional about making the project Nigeria work and believe in the potential greatness of the country.

“We have muddled through the past 63 years with squandered opportunities and yet with the promise of potential greatness.

“No country or nation is a perfect. Every nation continues to struggle in its match to a more perfect union. The path to stability, growth and sustainability will be challenging as there are no quick fixes.

“But all of us must collectively think and work Nigeria out of the current challenges. We have no other country but Nigeria, and we must make it to work for everyone, “he said.

The governor said his administration was founded on the true progressive agenda and would continue to create the enabling environment for residents to thrive and survive.

NAN reports that the police, paramilitary organisations and students from different schools took part in the parade.

Politics / Re: Real Estate Booming In Anambra Especially Awka(video) by Noneroone(m): 8:25pm On Sep 28, 2023
Abagworo:

I am not someone you can tell about real estate okay . Owerri at a time had a booming real estate and hospitality that was growing faster than Lagos but it's gone now. The Southeast as a whole is no longer growing fast in real estate as to compare with Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and even Asaba. The reason is insecurity but in the Southeast Enugu and Owerri are outstanding for now.
That southeast is not booming with real estate is purely your opinion albeit unfounded one as the security situation is just as bad everywhere in the country including even Abuja. However, when it comes to pace of real estate development currently, Awka and Asaba takes the lead. I know numerous estates projects involving new layouts that are ongoing there. Lagos and Abuja cannot be compared with these places because they are like states in size.
Hope Uzodima is messing Imo up so it's not even in contention.

This is too tiny compared with Umuahia not to talk of Enugu and Owerri. This is basically one estate. It's a good thing that people are now building in Awka but then it's not one of the fastest growing real estate.
Pls, Awka is one the fastest growing in real estate development. (New) Owerri is quite planned by I doubt it can rival current real estate development in Awka in terms of pace.

Let this sink home brother...

The American Voters can NEVER vote Trump in for the Rest of their history.

The sooner you believe, The better..
There is no poll where biden is currently leading. The margin of Trump's lead is up to ten points in some polls. It's more honourable to go quiet when you're proven wrong.

Politics / Ohaneze Faction Holds Igbo Day In Portharcourt, Urges Prayers For Igbos by Noneroone(m): 7:55pm On Sep 24, 2023
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has urged Ndigbos to pray for God’s intervention in restoring peace and security in the Southeast.

Ohanaeze made the appeal while condemning the latest spree of killings and bloodbaths in Imo State and other parts of the region.

The factional Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, made the call ahead of this year’s Igbo Day celebration.

Isiguzoro called on “Ndigbo to pray for God’s intervention to restore peace and security across the country, especially in the southeast and Imo State in particular.”

On September 23, 2023, the Igbo people of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, gathered at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church for a Thanksgiving Service and Prayer Session.

The event was organized by Ohanaeze Ndigbo, an Igbo socio-cultural organization, as part of the preparation for the Grand Finale of the Igbo Day celebration, which was scheduled to take place at the Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt on September 29th.

The service was attended by a large number of Igbo people, including representatives of Ohanaeze Ndigbo led by Professor Thomas Amadi Ellah and Prince Richard Ozobu, the chairman of the Elders Forum.

In his opening remarks, Professor Ellah expressed his joy that despite the insecurity challenges and other difficulties “facing the Igbo people, they had every reason to be thankful to Chukwu Okike Abiama (Almighty God) for His faithfulness and mercy.”

He noted that Ndigbo had been preserved and had survived in the seven Igbo-speaking states, including Rivers State and Anioma in Delta State, and that this was a cause for celebration.

TV/Movies / I'm Older Than Nollywood - Pete Edochie by Noneroone(m): 9:52am On Sep 21, 2023
In an interview with Afia TV, Edochie said the concept of Nollywood — as known today — did not exist when he made his acting debut in the 1985 adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s best-selling novel, ‘Things Fall Apart’.

The 76-year-old film star said Nollywood began seven years later with ‘Living In Bondage’ in 1992.

Edochie said he started to gain global recognition following his performance in ‘Things Fall Apart’.

“I am senior in the movie industry. I mean, when I did ‘Things Fall Apart’ in 1985, there was nothing like Nollywood. By then, Nollywood was slumbering sonorously in the womb of time,” he said.

“It was seven years after that Nollywood came on board with ‘Living In Bondage.’ I went round the world before Nollywood came. By the special grace of God, after I did ‘Things Fall Apart,’ I was celebrated internationally.

“The BBC flew in here to interview me and flew into America to interview Chinua Achebe. And Achebe said, ‘Pete Edochie gave that role an interpretation after my heart.’ Before he died, he was calling me Okonkwo.

“Seven years after Nollywood came and when I retired from broadcasting, I joined Nollywood.”

Edochie began his career as a radio broadcaster in 1967.

He had starred in ‘Things Fall Apart’ before he formally left radio broadcasting.

In 1995, Edochie was featured in ‘Ikuku (Hurricane) 1’, his first movie since his performance in ‘Things Fall Apart’.

He has starred in over 200 movies and is considered one of the most influential and respected actors in Nigeria.

He has also received several awards and recognitions for his outstanding performances and craft.

NOLLYWOOD

The Nigerian film industry, known as Nollywood, was founded in the 1990s. But the term ‘Nollywood’ was coined by the New York Times journalist Norimitsu Onishi in 2002 when he observed film-making activity in Lagos, Nigeria
