Science/Technology / Yellow Card Teams Up With Web3ladies To Empower 500+ Nigerian Women In Tech. by noskyboy(m): 12:43am On Oct 16, 2023
Pan-African cryptocurrency exchange and financial technology firm Yellow Card, through a $3,000 grant, has teamed up with the Web3Ladies mentorship program to empower over 500 Nigerian women with relevant tech and blockchain skills. This move by Yellow Card is part of its YC Social Good, the company's flagship Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative, aimed at promoting financial freedom and enabling access to tech resources for everyone across the continent.

The Web3Ladies mentorship program is a three-month intensive boot camp designed to train skilled designers, engineers, and managers for the blockchain industry while providing them with the necessary tools and tech resources needed for post-training success. For Yellow Card, the decision to partner with Web3Ladies, a women-centric organization, was driven by the need to provide greater access to training and tech resources for the burgeoning young population of the continent, particularly females, who face significant barriers. An estimated 230 million jobs in Sub-Saharan Africa will require digital skills by 2030, and UNESCO estimates that only 30% of women receive STEM training, with even fewer girls possessing essential digital skills for the modern workforce in the region. Yellow Card, through its YC Social Good Initiative, intends to close this gap, equipping and preparing young African talents with the necessary skills required to shape the future of the continent.

"We are committed to helping people across the African continent improve their lives through various partnerships and programs that focus on financial inclusion, youth empowerment, education, and innovation," said Jason Marshall, Chief Operating Officer of Yellow Card. Jason further explained that women and girls face significant barriers to technology and digital literacy education, making it an easy decision to grant Web3Ladies the $3,000 for the mentorship program. "This is just one of our several efforts under the YC Social Good, our CSR initiatives, which promote inclusion and financial freedom across the continent," Jason added.

Despite Nigeria's strong entrepreneurial spirit, only 15% of tech startup co-founders in Nigeria are women. A study published by LongHash in 2018 shows that among 100 blockchain startups surveyed, female employees accounted for only 14.5% of the workforce. So, while the digital ecosystem is dynamic and exciting, gender inclusivity remains a growth inhibitor. Yellow Card, through this partnership, has gone beyond mere words and reiterations of the problem to contribute to the empowerment of more women, an investment they believe will yield overall positive results for the African economy in the near future.

Nkechi Enebeli, Associate Program Manager for Web3Ladies, while commenting on Yellow Card's $3,000 grant to power their mentorship program, said, "Yellow Card's commitment to corporate social responsibility is nothing short of remarkable. Their partnership reaffirms the belief that empowering women in tech is not just a matter of equality but an investment in the future". She further explained that “The partnership is more than just financial support; it's a testament to the power of collaboration. We are immensely grateful to Yellow Card for recognizing our mission and offering their hand in our journey towards a more equitable tech ecosystem”.

The Web3Ladies mentorship program runs in four different phases for a duration of three months. During the program, mentees attend live classes and weekly workshops under the guidance of on-site mentors. The workshops are in-depth sessions on specific blockchain topics delivered by industry experts and experienced professionals. There are over 500 registered mentees and an intake of over 200 accepted applicants in the current cohort. We are looking to provide work tools such as laptops, inverters, and MiFis to successfully graduated mentees after the cohort program.

Since its launch in Nigeria in 2019, Yellow Card has contributed thousands of dollars to sponsor various projects and initiatives. This support extends beyond Nigeria and expands across the continent. Yellow Card has supported initiatives such as Generation Empower (GenEm) in support of their mission to educate and empower the youth in Tanzania, a $5,000 grant to the Purple Skills Klinic Foundation, which seeks to empower young people in Uganda, among other projects led by the company.

Business / How Yellow Card Is Solving Africa’s Payment Problems With Yellow Pay. by noskyboy(m): 5:47pm On Oct 01, 2023
Despite the shared cultural and socioeconomic similarities among various African countries, their proximity, and coexistence, the continent is starkly divided by a fragmented payment infrastructure. This division has made it exceedingly difficult for small business owners and everyday individuals to smoothly exchange value and receive payments across the continent. For instance, a small business owner in the bustling city of Lagos encounters payment challenges when providing services to customers in the welcoming city of Accra. Similarly, people in the lively cities of Johannesburg face hurdles when trying to send payments to business partners, friends, and family in Kigali or Nairobi, all due to the disjointed payment system. Even when payment solutions are found, the associated fees often discourage repeated transactions.

Africa possesses immense potential for economic growth and development, but it grapples with significant obstacles in enabling trade and financial inclusion. The absence of efficient and cost-effective cross-border payment systems is constantly impeding the flow of goods, services, and capital throughout the continent. Each country operates with its distinct payment system and currency, leaving little room for integration with the broader African community. This situation gives the impression that African countries and their citizens are isolated in economic islands, stifling potential growth opportunities.

According to a McKinsey report, only 5 to 7 percent of all payment transactions in Africa are conducted electronically or digitally, in stark contrast to more than 50 percent in Turkey. This means that a significant portion of cross-border payments still relies on cash or informal channels, which are costly, slow, risky, and often inaccessible to many segments of the population.

However, the situation is rapidly evolving as Africa embraces innovation and technology to reshape its payment landscape. The same report notes that in 2020, Africa's e-payments industry generated approximately $24 billion in revenue, with around $15 billion stemming from domestic electronic payments. The domestic e-payments market is projected to grow by approximately 20 percent annually, reaching about $40 billion by 2025.

With this understanding, Yellow Card introduced a new product at the end of 2022, Yellow Pay, offering a seamless and secure means to send and receive money across African borders instantly using cryptocurrencies. Initially available in a few countries, by January it had gained traction and is currently accessible in 16 African countries, including Nigeria, Botswana, Zambia, South Africa, Cameroon, and Kenya.

This product eliminates the complexities of currency conversion and hidden fees when making payments to loved ones in other African nations. With a few clicks, customers can smoothly convert their local currency into crypto and send it to recipients in a different country, who will instantly receive it converted into their local currency.

"This is more than just a money transfer service - it's a powerful tool that will unlock new opportunities for people across Africa," said Chris Maurice, CEO and co-founder of Yellow Card. "By enabling instant, low-cost transactions across borders, we are helping to create a more connected and dynamic Africa."

Yellow Pay leverages Yellow Card's crypto exchange platform to complete customer transactions using USDT on the blockchain. As mentioned in the McKinsey report, cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) are expected to have a significant impact on the outlook for e-payments in Africa, given their promising use cases and Africa's historical propensity to embrace innovation on a large scale and leapfrog into the future.

Peter Mureu, the Director of Marketing at Yellow Card, highlighted the product's unique value proposition, emphasizing its affordability and speed as game-changers. The product holds the promise of bridging the payment divide within Africa, enabling Emeka to easily connect with Kwame for service exchange and Mhambi to establish stronger business partnerships with Nadia through this seamless payment solution.

The significance and relevance of cross-border payments in Africa cannot be overstated. These payments facilitate international trade, stimulating economic growth, job creation, poverty reduction, and regional integration. They also play a pivotal role in promoting financial inclusion, enabling individuals and businesses to access financial services, save money, invest in opportunities, and enhance their livelihoods.

As Africa continues to innovate and adopt new technologies to enhance its payment systems, it is poised to become a global leader in e-payments and a model for other regions to emulate. The future of payments in Africa shines brightly with promise.

Business / Yellow Card And Circle, Makers Of USDC Partners To Drive Financial Inclusion. by noskyboy(m): 7:29pm On Aug 20, 2023
In a rapidly changing world, digital assets' perception, utilization, and importance in our day-to-day existence is undergoing profound changes. While cryptocurrencies continue to hold many unexplored possibilities, stablecoins stand out for their numerous advantages. The ability to send money effortlessly across borders, mitigating challenges associated with traditional payment methods such as delays and high fees, and being pegged 1:1 against the US dollar safeguarding individuals from currency fluctuations are only some notable benefits.

Cryptocurrency awareness remains a significant challenge across the African continent. In a proactive effort to address this gap, Yellow Card, a pioneering pan-African fintech company, and Circle, the issuer of USDC, a digital stablecoin, have united their efforts to champion financial inclusion. This collaboration has given rise to an engaging Financial Literacy Tour (FLT), aiming to raise awareness and provide educational opportunities on cryptocurrencies for individuals across the continent.

"Education is the cornerstone of unlocking the potential of digital assets and promoting financial inclusion across the continent. Through the Financial Literacy Tour, Yellow Card and Circle have taken a proactive and personalised approach to engage with communities, empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the world of digital assets,” said Chris Maurice, CEO and co-founder of Yellow Card.

The FLT events, held in Botswana, Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya at the start of June 2023, have served as a platform for attendees to delve into the world of crypto adoption. Through interactive workshops, informative presentations, and engaging discussions, participants gained valuable insights on embracing new technologies, unlocking the potential of digital assets in their daily lives, and even exploring career opportunities within the crypto space. In addition, Yellow Card’s brand ambassadors, who champion crypto adoption in their communities, were on the ground to share their insights with the young professionals, students and entrepreneurs present. Attendees also received their first USDC at the event.

"Yellow Card and Circle share a common passion to actively drive digital financial literacy and realise a more tolerant, functional and equitable planet,” said Mercina Tillemann Perez, VP of Circle Impact. “Selecting Botswana, Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya to begin the FLT events allows us to help educate, empower and build for a new financial future.”

Yellow Card and Circle are committed to financial education, striving to empower individuals by providing invaluable insights into the world of cryptocurrencies and stablecoins.

Science/Technology / Pan-african Crypto Exchange, Yellow Card Changes The Life Of Nigeria Crypto User by noskyboy(m): 1:22am On Apr 20, 2023
Leading Pan-African fintech , Yellow Card, has announced the winner of its "A Whole in your Wallet” global campaign. The lucky winner, Julian Oti, a young Nigerian, has been rewarded with one whole Bitcoin, currently valued at over $30,000. The campaign, which ran from February to April 2023, aimed to give Yellow Card users a soft landing following a rollercoaster in 2022 and a prolonged bear market in 2023. It also sought to empower Cryptocurrency enthusiasts and facilitate their journey to financial freedom through smart trading choices and money moves.

Commenting on his journey with cryptocurrency and emerging as the winner of the “A Whole in your Wallet Campaign”, Julian Oti said "I started trading cryptocurrency in 2016, but got on the Yellow Card App last year. I was attracted to the platform's trading rates and its user friendliness. Last month after getting a message from Yellow Card about the Whole in Your Wallet campaign, I decided to participate in the competition. I increased the frequency of my transactions on the platform and to my surprise I was announced the winner at the end of the campaign". On his plans for the 1 BTC, Julian explained that he will utilise part of the prize money to take care of personal needs, while he will re-invest the rest in trading digital assets.

The Yellow Card “A Whole in Your Wallet” Campaign was created to address the effect of the market landscape on everyday crypto users, especially in light of the global economic and crypto outlook for 2023. Experts have predicted "tougher times" and a prolonged bear market, and Yellow Card understands the need to give back to its users during these times.

The campaign encouraged users to carry out $10 worth of transactions daily on the exchange platform in order to stand a chance to win the grand prize of one whole Bitcoin at the end of the campaign, or $250 worth of cryptocurrency every week. The winner was selected via a transparent lucky draw format, witnessed and audited by an independent legal partner, Legalese, on April 4th, 2023.

Rachael Akalia, Yellow Card's Regional Marketing Manager for West Africa, described the campaign as "giving away a WHOLE bitcoin to fix the “HOLES” in the pocket of Crypto users after a turbulent 2022". She also noted that the campaign aimed to build a community of crypto enthusiasts and assist them in reaching their goal of gaining financial freedom. Yellow Card believes that by giving away one whole Bitcoin, they are not only inspiring hope but also fixing the "HOLES" in the pockets of their users.

Yellow Card is Africa's largest cryptocurrency exchange, offering traders a seamless and simple way to make smart money moves. The exchange enables users to trade Bitcoin and other coins at the best rates, promoting financial inclusion and education on the continent. After raising the largest Series A round for any African crypto company in 2021, the exchange secured $40M in Series B Funding Round in September 2022 - bringing the total raised to $57M. Yellow Card is co-founded and led by Chris Maurice (CEO) and Justin Poiroux (CTO).

With the audacious move to give away over $30,000 worth of crypto in a recovering market, Yellow Card has shown its commitment to its users. The global crypto market capitalization has crossed more than a $1 trillion market, supported by high and stable trading volumes. Bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency, has crossed $30,000 for the first time since June 2022. Despite the bearish predictions about the Crypto market, Yellow Card remains optimistic about the future and is committed to empowering its users with the tools and resources they need to succeed.

Celebrities / #pepperstew: 7 Ways Nigerians Are Reacting To Wizkid’s Fever Video Ft. Tiwa Sava by noskyboy(m): 11:54pm On Oct 25, 2018
http://www.streethub.com.ng/2018/10/25/ways-nigerians-are-reacting-to-wizkids-fever-video/
Stew everywhere! That is the latest slang in town. Few days back Wizkid dropped the video to Fever, one of his new singles, the video featured Tiwa Savage. The video immediately went viral on social media and in 24 hours the video has already hit over 1 million views on YouTube. The video went viral not because it was so interesting and everybody loved it, or because Tiwa Savage was on it, but because of the X rated display between Wizkid and Tiwa Savage. It got Nigerians talking, so we decided to observe and categorize Nigerians depending on their reactions to the video.
The “It’s a Publicity Stunt” gang
These are the people forming PR Professionals, they believe the video was strictly a professional business relationship, it is normal and there is nothing wrong in it, it is pure art and a successful publicity stunt.
The “It’s a publicity stunt, but…” gang
Here comes the PR guys that are skeptical. They believe it is obviously a PR stunt but there is more to it than just a publicity stunt. They think Tiwa Savage and Wizkid may have intentions to date or may already be having an affair in the background, that is why they feel comfortable shooting such video.
The “I talk am!” gang
These are the guys that believe they cannot be fooled at all. This is not the first time Wizkid is getting involved with Tiwa. After all the noise that was made the first time, Wizkid and Tiwa Savage dismissed any rumour of them having an affair. But this set of people never believed there was nothing between them and they think this Video confirms their suspicion. In fact they believe that this video is the way Wizkid and Tiwa has decided to make their relationship public and official.
The “This is not right” gang
Now comes the morality checkers. This set believes it is wrong for a young man with 3 children from 3 different baby mamas and a married but separated mother of 1 to engage in such kind of explicit display. This category of people are not smiling and believes that video should be banned.
The “Teebillz right now” gang
Here are the guys that believe Teebillz (her separated husband and former manager) will be hurt over the video. Despite Teebillz proclaiming that Wizkid respects him too much to mess around with Tiwa, Wizzy still went ahead to be touching his separated wife anyhow to the pleasure of the whole world, and this category of people believes it will hurt Teebillz bad. There have been times we thought Teebillz and Tiwa will come back together, but that was before Wizkid entered the equation. Tiwa seems to have moved on.
The “which Video is it that?” Gang
Here comes the people that are trapped under some kind of rock. They do not really know what the noise is about, they haven’t seen the video so they do not know where to come in. This is the category of people you will see asking questions like; “please what is this Stew everywhere people are talking about?” or “What has Wizkid and Tiwa done again?”.
The “Who the Video help?” gang
These are the guys who have seen the video, but do not care to give an opinion, because it is of less importance to their life. This is the category where you find people who say things like “whatever Wizkid and Tiwa Savage want, let them do, it is none of my business and e no change price of Garri for market”
***
Note that the above categories are not mutually exclusive, one person can actually fit into different categories.

Crime / Why Ban On Codeine Will Bring More Problems Rather Than Solutions - Nnamdi Nonso by noskyboy(m): 2:11pm On May 09, 2018
Codeine the new crack: why the ban on codeine syrups will create more problems - Nnamdi Nonso

The BBC produced an undercover documentary of the sinister codeine based syrup trade and its negative effect on young people in Northern Nigeria. This prompted the Nigerian government to place a ban on codeine based syrup in the country. The move by the government, seem like a good one, But then, just simply banning codeine based syrup in the country, is like curing the symptom, but not the problem it self. In fact banning the drug makes the situation worse and this is why; The demand for the drug is very high, it is reported that just in Northern Nigeria alone 3 million bottles of codeine based syrup are consumed daily. That is a market dealers cannot let go just like that - we are in capitalist economy, making money is the primary goal - therefore despite the drug being illegal, it will definitely still be secretly produced and smuggled around, just like weed, crack, cocaine and every other illegal substances. That will also make the drug scarce, and leave addicts more desperate to get it, which will automatically hike the price and make the drug unbelievably expensive. It is important to understand that a drug addict can not just stop taking drugs because it is not readily available or expensive, a void has been created by the drug and it has to be filled, therefore an addict will do anything to get supplied, including engaging in petty and major crimes like stealing, pickpocketing, bag snatching etcetera or even use funds meant for important things to get these drugs. So at the end, we have a new problem, "desperate drug addicts on rampage".
The only solution to the problem of drug abuse in our society, is understanding the root causes of these addictions and abuses and tackling them head on. The possible causes of drug abuse includes, peer influence, excessive medication and depression/frustration caused by personal experiences or by a bad social system like the one we face in Nigeria, so we need to device means to face this epidemic from the root causes rather than curing just the symptoms.

Politics / 1st October: National Hypocrisy Day. By Nnamdi Nonso (noskyboy) by noskyboy(m): 8:17am On Oct 01, 2016
1st October: National hypocrisy day. By Nnamdi Nonso (RogueScholar)

Every first of October we (Nigerians) celebrate independence day. But do we actually take a break to reflect on what we are celebrating? Is it the fact that one dollar is almost 500 naira, or the poor state of our infrastructure, or the religious terrorism in the North or the Militancy in the south, or the high level of poverty in a country potentially rich, or the high level of corruption in a highly religious country, or the fact that the country's economy is in a recession and the country is so broke to the extent we are contemplating selling our national assets. 56 years of "Independence" with nothing to show but a flag and National anthem. When issues like this come up, the first reaction of an average Nigerian, is to blame the leaders. In as much as the leaders have a great share of the blame, the followers also have a share in the blame. These so called leaders, thrive on the division and carelessness of the followers. Therefore, until we see ourselves as Nigerians first before being Christian or Muslim, Before being Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa, before being APC or PDP. We will continue to tell same story every year. If we are not going to truly unite, then let us stop wasting our time and disintegrate, if not, Its high time Nigerians stop being hypocrites and pretenders, and rather declare 1st October a National day of mourning and regret rather than celebrating independence, because there is really nothing of worth to celebrate, but there is a whole lot to cry about. #Rogue.

Music/Radio / Nairalander Cover's Beyonce's Freedom. Ft Wole Soyinka And Dr. King by noskyboy(m): 2:32pm On Jun 05, 2016
Nonso Nnamdi better known as KY, is a Nigerian Rapper who emerged from the city of Jos, same city known for producing greats. KY is known for his word play and witty but deep lines, and has dropped several other blazing tracks. The song freedom is a cover of Beyonce’s freedom featuring Kendrick Lamar, from her just released Lamonade album. Produced by the very talented Producer X (X-ELLA) and with the help of Wole Soyinka and Dr. King, KY jumped on this track using it to a very powerful message to Nigerians and specifically the youths of today. Download, listen, share and enjoy!
