i think the judges (1 and 3) should please carefully read the essays again, pay attention to important details and give proper scores. and i think Dongraspo's essay can be liken to a lazy blogger who just copy and past, and funny enough the judges 1 and 3 gave him unbelievable high scores. we should discourage copy and paste and reward hard work and creativity.

“Nigerians are what they are only because their leaders are not what they should be” Chinua Achebe
Nigeria as a country, can be described as a “chick sitting on corn and yet dying of hunger”, Nigeria which is home to numerous natural resources coupled with a large human resource, is still ranking very low when it comes to development. Among other factors, corruption seems to account to a large percentage for this unfortunate situation, and the set of people who should take the lion share of the blame are the leaders.
I am noskyboy, representing University of Jos, arguing that the leaders are to blame for corruption in Nigeria. Good day moderators, judges, co-debaters and all.
Corruption is a global problem, and exists in varying degrees in different countries, but it is more prevalent in the developing countries like Nigeria. The definition of corruption provided by Atlas (1968) and Lipset and Lenz (2000) provides a clear picture for us, especially in the context of the topic at hand. Altas (1968) sees corruption as a symptom of dysfunctionality of the relationship between the state and the people, characterized by bribery, extortion and nepotism. Lipset and Lenz (2000) views corruption as an effort to secure wealth or power through illegal means for private benefit at public expense. Corruption don’t occur in a vacuum, it is perpetuated by someone or set of people. In the case of Nigeria, corruption has become so wide spread that it is perpetuated in different forms by almost all and sundry, and Nigeria over the years has been ranked high for wide spread corruption, especially political corruption and corruption in government, therefore by implication Nigeria would be among the constant recipient of medals if corruption was an Olympic sport. Corruption has a negative effect on Nigeria, this is evident in the fact that almost all sectors of the country, have either broken down or is on the verge of breaking down simply because resources and funds for developing the country have been corruptly used.
The big question remains, who is to blame for corruption in Nigeria? Our answer is simple; the leaders must take the blame. Aiyede (2006) defines a leader as “an individual appointed to a job with authority, and accountability to accomplish the goals and objectives of the society. Therefore in this context, a leader is anyone who occupies any public position, elected, appointed or promoted. I am going to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the leaders are to blame for corruption in Nigeria, using the arguments below;
Leaders set the trend: The primary function of any leader is to set the trend for others to follow. A leader must possess the ability to create in the followers the necessary enthusiasm and put in every necessary effort to deliver on set goals. Thus the leader must have the ability to conceive and communicate a vision or idea is to followers. Therefore whatever situation you find in any country the first place to look, is to the leaders. This means that leaders practically lead the country by their actions and deeds not by long speeches. This has been exemplified by leaders like Abraham Lincoln of USA, Nelson Mandela of South Africa, Le Kwan Yu of Singapore and the likes, such leaders created a clear vision and stayed true to it and so did their followers. As for Nigeria, the leaders and heads of state that have lead Nigeria from its inception till date, have either been convicted or investigated for corrupt practices (Wikipedia 2015). This is coupled with the ostentatious and flamboyant life style of those in public offices. To maintain such life style they live way above their earnings, and public funds are then converted to private use. Where we have leaders who themselves engage in corruption what kind of example and vision are they setting for the followers? One that encourages corruption I guess. And on what grounds do the leaders want to stop subordinates and followers from engaging in corruption? Therefore if anybody must be blamed for corruption in Nigeria, the leaders must be the first to be blamed.
Another major reason why the leaders must be blamed for corruption in Nigeria is the fact that, corrupt leaders and public office holders don’t get punished or persecuted for corrupt practices and the reason for this is very simple, viewing from a Marxist perspective, it is easy to understand that the ruling class controls the law. This is evident in Nigeria; we constantly see the political class escape the law with grave crimes. The same leaders, who make the laws, break the laws and the legal system is powerless because they are controlled by the leaders, evidence to prove this isn’t far from reach, the case of the Police Pension Fund Fraud involving John Yusuf, who was given two years sentence or a fine of #750,000 for a scam worth #32billion, the subsidy scam, the NNPC $20billion scam and a host of other corruption cases reported on the media, perpetuators went unpunished. A country with such structure cannot be free from wide spread corruption, because the younger generation and the public are inculcating a culture of corruption and people aspire to be in public offices not for service but for personal gains through embezzlement of public funds because they have been taught by the leaders that the system rewards those who are corrupt.
Another reason why corruption should be blamed on the leaders is that the leaders who are entrusted with public funds meant for development, which would automatically alleviate the poverty of the common man have been embezzled, according to Transparency International reports, Nigeria has lost over $400billion to corruption, therefore the populace have been left to fend for themselves in the harshest of conditions ,as such the common man and average Nigerian becomes enticed to engaging in corrupt practices to survive, it becomes a case of “all man for himself and the devil gets the last man”. The once booming textile industry is dead, same with other industries, refineries don’t work, Agriculture neglected, electricity is inconsistent, small and medium enterprises don’t get support neither do they have a favourable environment to function and whose fault is this, absolutely the leadership. As such, no employment for the common man. To survive his last resort is to engage in corrupt practices. This adds to the corruption done by leaders and at the end what we have is a country where everyone is potentially corrupt either as a result of opportunity or bad circumstances and all because of bad leadership.
Chinua Achebe, a renowned Nigerian Novelist proclaimed that “The trouble with Nigeria is squarely a failure of leadership… The Nigerian problem is the unwillingness or inability of its leaders to rise to the responsibility of personal example ….”. I had an experience with a little boy, he said he wants to be a governor; I asked him what a governor does, he said, nothing but by cars, build houses and enjoy life. This indicates that the leaders are not just to blame for corruption, but they also help in socializing the upcoming generation into a culture of corruption. Thank you all.

Politics / THE NIGERIAN IRONY: How High Levels Of Religion And Corruption Manage To Thrive by noskyboy(m): 5:12pm On Nov 20, 2015
THE NIGERIAN IRONY
How high levels of Religion and corruption manage to thrive simultaneously in Nigeria
A survey of people’s religious beliefs carried out by the BBC in 2004, suggested that Nigeria is the most religious nation in the world, it was recorded that over 90% of the Nigerians interviewed said that they believed in God, prayed regularly and would die for their religious beliefs. This is in addition to the virtually uncountable amount of religious worship centers and clergy men /women in Nigeria, in Nigeria, religious centers can be found in every corner of the streets and clergy men/women and religious faithful’s can be found in almost every house hold, in fact, there are more churches and mosques in Nigeria than in the countries that brought these religions to Nigeria. All these facts are pointing to the fact that Nigeria has a very high level of religiosity.
As for the case of corruption, we don’t need to over hammer the fact that Nigeria and Nigerians are very corrupt; it’s obvious and evident in all aspects of the Nigerian society. If corruption was an Olympic sport, Nigeria would have been a perpetual recipient of the gold medal. Corruption in a simple sense is being dishonest, mischievous and willing to use one’s position or power to his/her own advantage, especially for money.
It’s abnormal for these two factors to co-exist in high in frequencies in one country, one is supposed to suppress the other, but that is not the case in Nigeria. That is why it has become an issue of concern.
There are five major reasons why such exist in Nigeria, and they are;
SOCIETAL VALUES.
The societal value of the Nigerian society is another factor that has made it possible for corruption to thrive in Nigeria despite the presence of high religiosity. The Nigerian society has attached great value to materialism, irrespective of the process of acquisition, even in the various religious societies and institution (churches and mosques), people with wealth are valued, reverenced and respected irrespective of how the they acquired the wealth, and as a result of the respect Nigerians have for wealthy people, members of the society strive by any means to be wealthy in order to gain the respect and admiration of others, as explained by a foremost sociologist, Robert. K. Merton, when people can’t conform, i.e. can’t access the means of achieving the goal, which is wealth, they innovate other means, which most of the time is corrupt. The fact is that majority of Nigerians don’t have access to the legitimate means of achieving wealth, so they engage in corrupt practices in order to be valued, reverenced and respected by the society, after all, in Nigeria the end justifies the means, just as Machiavelli professed.
LOW STANDARD OF LIVING AND HIGH COST OF LIVING.
Considering the low standard of living in Nigeria, where an average Nigerian is said to live below a dollar in a day, coupled with the high cost of living, i.e. Nigerian markets are for the rich, Nigerians tend to consider individual and family gains first, irrespective of morals or religion, putting food on the table is the first thought, therefore every other things must wait, just as Karl Marx observed, that man must first eat and drink before he can partake in any form of art, religion or philosophy. So when one has an opportunity to enrich himself, he quickly takes it, not minding whether his religion supports his method of acquisition of wealth or not.
THE NOTION OF FORGIVENESS.
One major feature of the religions practiced in Nigeria, is the notion of forgiveness. That is, no matter what kind of wrong a person does, he/she would automatically be forgiven by God, once he/she asks for forgiveness. And people have continually capitalized on this to perpetuate all forms of corrupt and criminal acts. We have heard tales of people who pray before and after engaging in criminal activities, believing that all their crimes and wrong doings would be forgiven simply by saying “God forgive me”.
LACK OF TOTAL BELIEF IN THE PRESENT FOREIGN RELIGIONS.
This is one important and significant factor, this is a case where these religions are not totally believed, due to their lack of originality. Since these religions are foreign, most Nigerians don’t have a strong personal conviction to fully believe them, so Nigerians have this “let’s just do it in case” attitude towards these religions, and when they are faced with real life issues they go the other way, a perfect example can be seen in the attitudes of our politicians and government officials, during their swearing in, they swear with the bible or the Koran, but still go ahead to engage in corrupt practices, but we all know that if they swear by the god of Ogun, Ifa, Amadioha and so on, the story would be different.
MISCONCEPTION AND GROSS MIS-UNDERSTANDING OF THE PRESENT FOREIGN RELIGIONS.
Religion is supposed to be a tool used in limiting the excess selfish acts of people, but this is not the case in Nigeria, because there is this misconception and lack of total understanding of the present foreign religions, the tenets of these religions are not fully understood by Nigerians because these religions weren’t originally part of the culture of Nigerians, so people act in certain ways because they are told to do so, not because they understand what they are doing and as a result of these, people tend to interpret the laws and rules of these religions in a way that suits their actions, therefore creating room for corrupt practices.
CONCLUSION
Nigeria being one of the most religious and most corrupt countries of the world, is a clear indication that religion in Nigeria is either doing the opposite of what is expected of it, or is simply not living up to its expectations, and from the issue above (Nigerian irony), it can be deducted that Nigeria is one of the countries with the highest number of hypocrites, because everybody claims to be religious and morally sound, if that’s the case, where did the high level of corruption come from?. Am not in any way insinuating that atheists and agnostics don’t have the capacity to do good and avoid corruption, but am trying to paint the Nigerian picture, the trend of atheism is very rare in Nigeria, most Nigerians believe in the existence of God and belong to one religious body or the other.
In order for the Nigerian irony to be normalized i.e. reducing the level of corruption and maintaining that of religion, I would suggest the following,
Firstly, since Nigerians have chosen to practice foreign religions, then these religions must be fully understood and practiced with sincerity by its followers, and to ensure this “God called me” should not be a criteria to becoming custodians of any religion in Nigeria, strict measures should be taken to ascertain custodians of any religion in Nigeria in order to avoid mis-education, misconception and misinterpretation of the various religious tenets.
Secondly, if the Nigerian society can’t get it right with the present foreign religions, then its high time it begin to trace its steps back to its original religions that it had before contact with the outside world, these our original religions were generated as a result of societal needs and the people have better understanding of it.
Lastly, part of the problem can be blamed on the structure of the Nigerian society, where a few own most of the country’s wealth and the majority don’t have opportunity and access to the legitimate means of wealth acquisition, leading to crime, therefore it should be ensured by those in charge of the country’s affairs that all has equal chances and opportunity to being successful.
It can’t be over emphasized that religion has a great role in maintaining morality in the Nigerian society because man is naturally selfish, but when the religious institution we have is not playing the role expected of it, then we should begin to consider other options.

Education / How Free Are The So Called ‘free Gifts Of Nature’? by noskyboy(m): 8:29pm On Nov 13, 2015
HOW FREE ARE THE SO CALLED ‘FREE GIFTS OF NATURE’ AND WHAT DOES IT HOLD FOR CAPITALISM?
In early 2013, the international media presented us an interesting news about the sale of canned fresh air in China, the initiative was introduced by a millionaire who is in the recycling business. The sale of canned fresh air was simply as a result of the high rate of air pollution in China due to the increasing rate of industrial activities in the country. For the records, eight millions cans of this canned fresh air were sold in just ten days. As funny as it may sound, this is a really serious matter, being in a capitalist world, some profit seeking business men and multinational corporations may take advantage of this initiative and go to the extent of intentionally polluting the air in order to sell fresh air, and sooner than later fresh air would be on sale all over the world. Just imagining people going to the market to buy air, or people buying fresh air from hawkers on the street.
With the above information we can see that the sale of air is possible, if not imminent, and this would be in addition to the already on sale ‘’free gifts of nature’’ which include; water, land and fire. Of course it is no news to us that water is on sale in every part of the world, land is now one of the most expensive asset anybody can have, especially in Nigeria, as for the case of fire, for you to start a fire, you have to buy matches or a lighter, or good luck with the flints (striking stones or metals together to make fire) and hope you have all the time in the world. With all these happening, the question on every inquisitive individual’s mind is how free are the free gifts of nature? And the obvious answer to this question is that nothing is free anymore, because what was free has now been commoditized.
WHAT DOES THIS HOLD FOR CAPITALISM?
Simply put, Capitalism is an economic system which is characterized by private ownership of property, capitalism is all about making profit from everything, in a capitalist system money is the soviet of all things, and just as the American rapper, Rick Ross says, “if you ain’t talking money, then you talking nonsense”. The German scholar Karl Marx, is one of the foremost critics of capitalism, and he “predicted” that capitalism is its own grave digger, and that it is going to die out and give way to socialism where there would no longer be private ownership of property, but everybody would own everything and people would be given according to their need not according to their greed, as we see today, some countries have attempted to practice socialism to the full but have failed.
With the unfolding of events like the one discussed above, we would see that the end of private ownership (capitalism) is not yet in sight. Simply because people don’t just only own properties like cars, houses, jets e.t.c anymore but go ahead to own what is supposed to be the free gifts of nature. The fact is, paying for something gives you ownership of the thing you pay for. You pay for water, land, fire and every other thing and soon you may be paying for air. This simply means that nothing in this world is free, and as far as nothing is free, people would continue to own things, prolonging the reign of capitalism. So Karl Marx and co. sorry to disappoint you, your “prediction about capitalism” is still going to wait for a very long time.

Religion / Why Do You Close Your Eyes When You Pray? by noskyboy(m): 9:24am On Mar 22, 2015
What is your reason for closing your eyes while you pray?.
In a most religions of the world and among most believers in the existence of God, prayer is a key and essntial element, the way and manner this prayer is practiced vary across religions and societies, but there seems to be a noticable pattern among these different groups, which is the closing of the eyes while praying. I have asked several people, the rational behind closing the eyes while praying, and i have noticed that people close their eyes while praying for various reasons, for some its to avoid distraction, some others are just conforming to rules and some others, because others are doing it, while some say that they were trained that way.
So that got me interested in knowing why you close your eyes while you pray. So lets hear it.
Education / Corruption At Its Peak: Unijos Students To Pay 12, 000 Each For 'damages'. by noskyboy(m): 2:17pm On Feb 16, 2015
The management of the university of Jos, has finally agreed to re-open the school after was closed indefinately after the students protested the unjustifiable charges that was imposed on them by the school's management. The university's management have come to a conclusion that all students must pay 12,000 naira each for damages or would not be allowed to move back into the hostel or write exams which is scheduled for 23rd feb. Exactly a week from today.
This new development, has further proved the level of wickedness, insensitivity and corruption in our high institutions. Thousands of students are asked to pay 12k each within one week for damages, that wont amount up to 500k at most 1million naira. The management didnt release the list and prices of things they claimed were damaged, in order to justify thier charges, they just sat down and decided to met out wickedness on students fighting for thier right.
This wickedness did not end at that, the SUG officials were suspended and the SUG was dissolved, without any chance given to the SUG officials to defend themselves. This is a calculated attempt to cripple the students ability to mobilize and protest against their unjust acts.
This act by the university of Jos' vc and his cohorts must be condemned and resisted. So i urge all Nigerian students everywhere, to raise their voices againstt this sort of wickedness and injustice done by those managing our institutions. ALUTA CONTINUA!

Education / Serious Protest In UNIJOS Over Percieved Increase Of Fees by noskyboy(m): 8:29am On Nov 24, 2014
The students of the University of Jos are currently on a serious protest over the tyrannical way the VC is running the school.

Since the beginning of the current VC's tenure lectures and exams have been done using the fire brigade approach and school fees have been on an ungodly increase, from #16,000 plus hostel accomodation, to over #40,000 last session.

As if that is not bad enough, the VC has proposed another increase which may bring the fees up to #60,000 for returning students, talk less of the amount new students pay. And this has been declared unacceptable by the students, therefore the aim of the protest is to force the VC to reverse the fees not just to 40k but to 20k, and this would be achieved by refusal to write exams, which is to start today 24th Nov 2014.

I urge everyone to support this noble request and movement against corruption in our Universities. ALUTA CONTINUA!!!

Romance / RAPE: Who Is To Be Blamed, Males Or Females? by noskyboy(m): 3:23pm On Aug 27, 2014
Rape is simply, the crime of having sex with someone against his/her will. Anybody can be raped, male or female, but it is very rare to see males getting raped by females, In most of the cases, we see females getting raped by males. Over time, It has been generally percieved that males are to be blamed for raping females, and men who engage in such acts lack self control, therefore they can't restrain themselves when they see women. But of late, some other views are begining to come up blaming women instead for rape. Many people are begining to argue that women get raped simply because they make themselves available for rape by the provocative way they dress, exposing 'things', and that some other girls are also raped because of the mixed signals they send to men, i.e. Saying no, but still Acting like they want 'it', some are also raped because they simply refuse to reciprocate favours, in such cases, after a guy has spent his last dime on a girl, she then refuse to 'do'. And some people think that some girls just pretend to have been raped because they guy didnt deliver a promise. So with these conflicting views concerning who is to be blamed for rape, i would like to know where you stand, so let us know, Who is actually to be blamed for the act of rape, and why?.
for me, its simple, any guy that truely and intentionally rapes a girl simply lacks 'self control', one of the things that seperates us from lower animals. Peace!
Religion / What Really Is SIN? Need Clarification. by noskyboy(m): 6:31pm On Aug 20, 2014
What is sin, in the first place?, simply put, Sin is breaking God's laws. I understand that, what i dont understand is the saying that, Jesus, who is also God, came to save man from sin. Ok, look at it this way, God made laws for man to obey, and when man goes against these laws, he has sinned and would be punished by God. So why then would God send himself in the person of Jesus to come and save man from breaking the laws that God himself created. It means that God is saving man from God's punishment, if thats the case, then why did God create the laws in the first place?, what really is SIN?. Need logical explanations and clarifications please.

obama presently giving his tribute,. But the truth is celebrating MANDELA and applauding his virtues is one thing and to inculcate and live his kind of life is a different thing all together. The only true respect we can give to Nelson Madiba MANDELA is to put his teachings into practice and follow his examples, and from the look of things, that is something we are not ready to do. So we should save our energy, let the Legend rest and stop deceiving our selves that we love and respect him, if we not ready to live his kind of life. #letthetruthbetold

you guys are mixing things up, am not totally against copy and pasting, cos sometimes one would want to share with frnds, but atleast give reference, plus, the rate at which pple copy and paste these days is alarming, leading to loss of creativity, you would not get it now, untill a day comes when ur child wont be able to write a simple article or be able to express himself without looking for someones work to copy, and mr 'think outside the box' copying and pasting from nature and the environment is creativity, but copying and pasting someone else's work is plagiarism. Got that!

Literature/Writing Ads / What Is Phubing, Do You Phub, And Why? by noskyboy(m): 3:10pm On Aug 06, 2013
What is phubing? lets get educated. Phubing is something most of us do most of the time, especially in social situations. Phubing is an act of snobing using your phone, it is when you intentionally and pretensiously bury your head in your phone in order to ignore someone or something, many of us do it, you know now, when you try to use your phone as a cover when ignoring or pretending not to hear or be interested, it may surprise you to know that rapper jay z, is the master of phubing, that's according to a channel, french 24.
For me, I phub alot, not because am a snob, but for good reasons, they include;
To stop/boil down an argument, most times, when involved in an argument, and I want to quit, I just pretend to be busy with my phone, so the argument would just die down, but my friend Nanpan never falls for this trick, he keeps talking.
- secondly I phub to reorganize my lines when in a live chat with a girl, you know, when you don't have anything else to gist about, you just press your phone for a while and try to remember your lines, then gist continuous.
I also use it when waiting for someone in a busy place, make e no be like say you jobless or stranded. I just press my phone and form busy. There are other reasons I phub sha.
So lets hear yours, do you phub? And why?
