The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has issued a public warning about relying on cryptocurrency transactions. This was done via a press release on the 25th day of July, 2019.

According to the press release, managing director and CEO of NDIC, Umaru Ibrahim. said relying on cryptocurrencies is very risky, because they are unregulated and not backed by central banks in most financial jurisdictions.

The NDIC provides a safety net for depositors and aims to protect the banking system from instability caused by bank runs or loss of confidence.

According to Ripples Nigeria, Umaru Ibrahim had previously talked about his concerns during a courtesy call with the NDIC board and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, spoke on eagerness to regulate cryptocurrencies and partake in the emerging global crypto market. He said:

“The NDIC and other safety-net participants in the country must not be left behind in the adoption of appropriate regulatory framework to deal with the prevalence of cryptocurrencies in the global financial space.”

Many Nigerians are currently using Cryptocurrencies and there is need for the regulation of this sector in the West African Country,

The crypto markets are seeing a strong surge with altcoins posting the strongest gains and Bitcoin breaking back above the psychological price point of $10,000.

After dropping below 10,000 in recent corrections, BTC is today up by 3.2%, bringing it to $10,074 at press time.

In an interview on the podcast Unchained this week, Pantera Capital founder Dan Morehead analyzed the cryptocurrency’s logarithmic growth rate and forecast that Bitcoin could hit $42,000 by the end of 2019, and even potentially reach $356,000 within a couple of years.

Ether (ETH) posted a strong gain of close to 7% and is trading around $222 by press time. The coin has held ground above $200 consistently throughout its 7-day chart. On the week, ETH is up by 5.2%.

NEO (NEO) is up close to 8% on the day. Cosmos (ATOM) by over 7% and Cardano (ADA) by 6.3%.

The United States Senate Banking Committee will be holding a bigger debate on crypto and blockchain regulatory frameworks next week.

It was officially announced by the committee and the announcement indicates that the hearing which has been dubbed “Examining Regulatory Frameworks for Digital Currencies and Blockchain” will take place on July 30th.

The witnesses will be Jeremy Allaire, co-founder and CEO of payments company Circle, who will speak on behalf of The Blockchain Association; Rebecca M. Nelson, a specialist in International Trade and Finance at “Congress’s think tank,” the Congressional Research Service; and Professor of Law Mehrsa Baradaran, from the Irvine School of Law at the University of California.

The hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. EST and will be broadcast live.

The hearing follows proceedings before congressional committees on Facebook’s Libra earlier this month.  After the Banking Committee Hearing, Chairman Mike Crapo and Member Sherrod Brown shared additional insights into their concerns. Crapo said:

“We've got to look at how we structure data protection in the United States […] We need to move to a comprehensive approach. What that structure exactly is, I can't tell you.”

The Miami Dolphins, American professional football team announced that Litecoin (LTC) is now the team’s official cryptocurrency. This they did via a press release.
The Miami Dolphins and Litecoin have also partnered with Aliant Payments, a crypto merchant services and payment processing firm, to enable crypto payments for the team’s upcoming 50/50 raffle. The team donates half of what they get from this to charity.
Cryptocurrency users will reportedly be able to buy raffle tickets with LTC and Bitcoin (BTC) either online or via in-stadium kiosks at Hard Rock Stadium.
LTC and BTC are cryptocurrencies with similar technical underpinnings. Bitcoin is the number one cryptocurrency by market cap with a total MC of over $201 billion at press time, while Litecoin is the fourth with a market cap of over $6.37 billion, according to data provided by Coin360.
Charlie Lee, the creator of Litecoin and managing director of the Litecoin Foundation, hopes to use this partnership as a way to educate the public on LTC and cryptocurrencies in general.
He said:
“This collaboration propels Litecoin in front of an audience of millions of people around the world at a time where adoption of cryptocurrencies continues to gain momentum and the ecosystem is able to support real world use cases in ways previously not possible. We see this as a powerful way to raise awareness and educate people about Litecoin and cryptocurrencies on a tremendous scale.”

Mark Carney, Bank of England governor said people need to understand the issues Facebook is attempting to solve with Libra. Carney delivered his remarks at the Financial Stability Report press conference posted on the Bank of England’s YouTube channel.

Carney said:“It’s way too expensive to do domestic payments. It’s way too slow, and that hurts consumers and businesses. It stifles innovation, and it’s far too expensive to send money cross-border, and there are huge financial inclusion issues related to that and costs related to that. So, while we are trying to address all these issues, we have to absolutely acknowledge the problem that they’re trying to solve. And if it’s not this, we’d better have some answers for what else it is.”

Carney also believes that Libra has to be virtually perfect at the outset; at least with regards to financial security, for it to be released at all.

“It’s either successful or it isn’t. If it’s successful, it becomes systemic, because it would involve a very large number of users. And if you’re a systemic payment system, it’s 5-sigma. You have to be on all the time. You can’t have teething issues. You can’t have people losing money out of their wallets … The standards are in a different zip code — to use the American term.”

Carney said Libra needs to address areas like basis risk, rebalancing risk, managing underlying assets, facilitating anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism.Remember that U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell also made similar remarks about Libra.

Today, Binance cryptocurrency exchange announced the launch of its new Margin Trading platform which will allow the company’s users to use crypto collateral on Binance in order to borrow funds and make leveraged long or short trades.

This happened after the exchange talked about such a move in May. It has already been tested making Today’s roll out to just make the service available to anyone in permitted jurisdictions that have verified I.D. on Binance.com.

This new service will be available from the main Binance Exchange page through a “Margin” tab.

The company in their noted that both the exchange and margin interfaces have been optimized and underpinned by a new “advanced trading engine for better order matching and press indexes for margin level calculations to enable lower liquidations,”

Changpeng Zhao, Binance chief operating officer and co-founder said the pivot was part of the exchange brand’s wider strategy to become a one-stop shop anything cryptocurrency. He said:

“This is another step in providing an inclusive cryptocurrency trading platform catering to the needs of both advanced institutional traders and retail traders under the same roof. We are providing a new tool in the financial services and cryptocurrency markets to help amplify trading results of successful trades.”

This Binance 2.0 is a Margin Trading service for Evolving Cryptocurrency Traders.
