I'm not doubting the authenticity or otherwise of your post. But lately it has come to light that a lot of hackathons are really a ruse for building actual solutions for clients of the organisers.

You have a valid point. After attending a lot of hackathons over the years I've had this feeling too.
This particular Hackathon is organised by Amazon Web Services. AngelHack is just a facilitator.
Everything you build is on AWS infrastructure and the judges are also AWS guys.
