HealthAnother US Company Fires Employee For Being Hiv-positive by nutripot(op):
A Subway franchise in Indiana is being sued in federal court for allegedly firing an employee for being HIV-positive. Data from (www.aids.gov) a reliable US site says that more than 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV infection.

The lawsuit was brought by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which says that the sandwich shop fired the employee, who is named in the lawsuit as John Doe, after he told his boss that he is HIV positive.

Reliable information reaching us say that the supervisor responded by telling the employee, “What if you cut yourself while working?” and “What if our customers find out?”
This conversation happened on January 13th, twelve days after Doe was hired at the Subway franchise. On February 14th, his supervisor informed him that the franchise manager felt that he could pose a liability to the company, and terminated his employment.

Dear Nairaland Pal,

What did you have for breakfast and what are you planning to eat for lunch or dinner?

Healthy eating is not only important for your diet, it's also important as a part of your personal well-being. Eating healthy can drastically improve your physical fitness, allow you to feel better about yourself, and do wonders for you health. Healthy eating doesn't mean you have to follow a strict diet, or give up foods you love. You just need to balance the amount of types of foods you eat to obtain all the necessary nutrients. It's a good idea to limit the fattening foods such as fast food, pizzas, etc... but you don't necessarily have to completely avoid them.

If you are not planning what to eat next you might end up eating junk. Planning the food you eat ahead helps you to stay healthy, reduce diseases, and guess work. Every day we have to make decisions about what kind of food we want to eat and what kind of nutrition every food product will provide. It’s the nutritional choices that we make every day that will determine how healthy we will be in the long run. Too much food can make us obese, while too little nutrition can lead to malnourishment.

Being healthy is about how you treat and nourish your body, meaning what you put into it, and the type of things you put your body through. As Nigerians we have various ethnic cultures and foods. We love to party and we love to eat foods. But what matters is knowing the quantity your body can process at a given time. (moderation Is key).

FoodRe: Bigger Plates Can Make You Eat More (read) by nutripot(op): 4:52pm On Sep 18, 2015
Larger plates can make a serving of food appear smaller, and smaller plates can lead us to misjudge that very same quantity of food as being significantly larger. For example, in a study conducted at a health and fitness camp, campers who were given larger bowls served and consumed 16% more cereal than those given smaller bowls. Despite the fact that those campers were eating more, their estimates of their cereal consumption were 7% lower than the estimates of the group eating from the smaller bowls. This suggests that not only could large dinnerware cause us to serve and eat more; it can do so without us noticing and trick us into believing we have eaten less.
Eat healthy and control your portion sizes today.
FoodBigger Plates Can Make You Eat More (read) by nutripot(op): 9:27am On Sep 18, 2015
Do you usually eat out all the time? Do you want to slim down but not making any headway? Now you have be cautious about the quantity of food you eat and the type of plate you are served.

Over time I have heard many customers complaining or asking the food attendant to add extra portion to their order, as they feel it won’t be enough to satisfy their craving. It is very important to be aware of environmental influences and to consider what you put on your plate or purchase.#

As you might expect —
or know from firsthand experience — the bigger the plate you’re served, the more you food you’ll end up stuffing into your face. Even if you’re attempting to be mindful of what you eat.
We found evidence that people consistently ate more food or drank more non-alcoholic drinks when offered larger-sized portions, packages or items of tableware than when offered smaller-sized versions,” researchers stated in the study’s abstract. However, while the study found that bigger plates result in bigger food consumption, experts described the effect as “small to moderate” for both adults and children. In other words, if people avoided eating from big plates or were served smaller portions all across their diet, then daily calorie intake would decrease by 12% to 16%, or up to roughly 280 calories.

HealthBreast-feeding May Correct Autism Symptoms by nutripot(op): 9:05pm On Sep 16, 2015
News reaching us from researchers found that among 44 babies with a particular autism “risk” gene, those who were breast-fed longer spent more time looking at images of “happy” eyes and shied away from “angry” eyes.
However experts stressed that the study offers no evidence that breast-feeding ultimately affects a child’s odds of developing autism, or that it lessens the severity of autism symptoms.
Long-term studies are “absolutely required” to answer those questions, said lead researcher Kathleen Krol, of the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, in Leipzig, Germany.
At first, it appeared that all babies who’d been exclusively breast-fed for a longer period around six months, on average had a stronger preference for the happy eyes, versus babies who’d been breast-fed for a shorter time.
But when the researchers took a deeper look, that was true only of babies with the autism risk gene. The longer they’d been breast-fed, the more they preferred happy eyes and turned away from angry eyes.

HealthNafdac Arrest Man With Fake Drugs Worth N40million In Asaba by nutripot(op): 7:59am On Sep 09, 2015
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has arrested a man named Paul Osita Eli in his home with assorted counterfeit drugs worth over N40 million. The raid took place in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

The suspect, who was identified as Paul Osita Eli, was arrested in the early hours of Monday at Number 2, Charles Edozien Avenue, Asaba, where he was reportedly packaging the counterfeit drugs with mobile authentication number to make it look genuine.

The drugs found in his three-bedroom apartment where he operates from included Maloxine, Lumatem (anti-malaria drugs), LOFNAC, Buscomac and Rysovin alongside already printed mobile authentication numbers.

Paul Eli, who claimed to be a graduate of Management Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, while speaking with newsmen, said he had been in the business for over one year, adding that he did the packaging of the drugs after receiving them from his business associate, whom he simply named as Achubuike in Lagos.

Disclosing that he distributed the drugs in Kano through his business partner, one Chubuike in Sabon Gari, the suspect, who hails from Anambra State, said the drugs were imported from India by his partner in Lagos

HealthHealth Tips For Pregnant Mums In Nigeria by nutripot(op): 8:44am On Sep 02, 2015
If you are pregnant, your baby’s development is on your mind at all time. Improving your diet during pregnancy is an easy way to enhance your baby’s health. Chat with your doctor, shop carefully and try them. Changes in food likes and dislikes in pregnancy are connected with your sense of smell and not your sense of taste. 90% of your ability to taste is actually connected with sense of smell.
Our recommendation– Be prepared for certain smells to make you feel physically sick.

Here are some of the foods recommended for pregnant mums-
Eggs. Packed with protein and vitamins D and B12, these nutritional powerhouses are quick and easy to prepare. Try them scrambled or on top of lightly fried rice.

Dairy products. Low-fat milk, cheese, and yogurt are delicious sources of calcium. Try to drink milk a couple of times a day, and include a daily serving of yogurt or cheese (made with pasteurized milk).

Nuts. Portable and non-perishable, nuts and nut butters are perfect on-the-go snacks and excellent sources of protein and healthy fat, which can aid in your baby’s development. Almonds, peanuts, and walnuts are all good picks.

Fruit. Whether fresh, frozen or canned, fruit is high in vitamins and fiber, key in every pregnancy diet since it can help prevent constipation. Read the labels on canned fruit carefully. Go for fruit packed in water rather than syrup.

Thanks for reading and share.

HealthRe: Research Shows That US Students Often Tossed Fruits And Veggies In Trash by nutripot(op): 6:14pm On Aug 26, 2015
For many parents, buying and preparing healthy foods is pretty easy. It’s getting your child to actually eat those nutritious foods that’s the hard part! This makes mealtimes frustrating and leaves parents often wondering if their child is getting enough nutrients.
HealthResearch Shows That US Students Often Tossed Fruits And Veggies In Trash by nutripot(op): 5:56pm On Aug 26, 2015
According to USDA mandate, it is required that each student must have a daily portion of fruits and vegetables. The overall goal of these guidelines is to improve children’s dietary behaviours and ultimately address the childhood obesity epidemic, and so there needs to be patience to allow children time to adjust.

Studies found that children preferred processed fruits and vegetables such as the tomato paste on pizza or 100 percent fruit juice rather than whole varieties. The essence of fruits and veggies is to nourish their body and give them the necessary vitamins to grow strong and healthy.
New Research from the University of Vermont used digital photography to capture graphic images of students lunch trays in the school after they selected their food, as they were leaving the lunch line, and again at the end of their lunch as they passed the food disposal area. They found that while many students placed more fruits and vegetables on their trays – as required by the USDA mandates put in place in 2012 – they consumed fewer of them. The amount of food wasted increased by 56 percent, the researchers found. Evidence have it that more kids usually throw away their fruits after they must have received it from their food eatery.

Verified reports documented hundreds of tray observations over 21 visits to two elementary schools in the Northeast both before and after the implementation of the USDA guidelines. About half of the students at the schools qualified for free or reduced price lunch, a marker for low socioeconomic status.

The way forward-

In addition to making sure those options are available, additional strategies are provided in the paper for increasing fruit and vegetable consumption in school lunch programs:
Cutting up vegetables and serving them with dip or mixing them in with other parts of the meal;
Slicing fruits like oranges or apples, rather than serving them whole;
Adopting promising strategies targeting school settings such as Farm-to-School programs and school gardens, which can encourage fruit and vegetable consumption in addition to what the cafeteria is providing
Putting public health programs in place that encourage fruit and vegetable consumption in the home, which could carry over to school.
