HealthNigerian Nurse Jailed In UK For Leaving Baby At Home To Go To Work by NwaNimo1(op): 6:03pm On Sep 11, 2024
A nurse who left her 10-week-old baby home alone while she went to work has been jailed.

Ruth Auta, 28, left her son Joshua Akerele at her nurses' accommodation at the Royal Bolton Hospital shortly after 06:30 GMT on 20 December 2022, returning over eight hours later.

She called an ambulance at 15:24, reporting her son was not breathing. He was pronounced dead at 16:40, despite attempts to resuscitate him.

Auta, who tried to flee the country after pleading guilty to child cruelty at an earlier court hearing, was jailed for three years at Bolton Crown Court on Tuesday.

'Terrible decision'

No conclusive cause of death could be given for Joshua, with the court hearing that he was a healthy baby.

The court heard he may have overheated due to the layers of clothing and bedding he was wrapped in, but other potential causes of death could not be ruled out.

Auta, of no fixed abode, initially told officers from Greater Manchester Police she had collected Joshua from a childminder after she had finished work on 20 December, claiming she had fallen asleep next to him and that she had found him unresponsive when she woke up.

CCTV footage obtained by police, however, showed Auta leaving her flat without Joshua at 06:47 and returning home alone at 15:13.

Messages found on her phone showed she had asked the childminder to tell the police she had looked after Joshua that day but the childminder told officers she had not seen the baby for a few days.

Auta was charged with cruelty to a child and pleaded guilty at a hearing at Manchester Magistrates' Court on 24 May.

The case was adjourned to 21 June for sentence but Auta was arrested at Gatwick Airport on 6 June after trying to board a flight to Nigeria on a one-way ticket.

Sara Davie, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "Whilst she went to work to provide care for other people, Ruth Auta left the very person who needed her care the most home alone."

Ms Davie said that, as a nurse, Auta should have known the dangers of leaving her baby unattended and "must now live with the consequences of the terrible decision she made that day".

She said Auta had failed to show remorse throughout the case, as well as misleading police about her childcare arrangements and then trying to evade justice by attempting to flee the country.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with all those who have been affected by Joshua's death," Ms Davie added.

PoliticsWe’re Restoring Confidence In Nigeria Economy – Tinubu by NwaNimo1(op): 8:34pm On Sep 10, 2024
President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s efforts to restoring confidence in Nigeria economy through measures aimed at reducing inflation, stabilising the foreign exchange market, and improving fiscal management. shocked

President Bola Tinubu has directed his Vice, Kashim Shettima to, immediately, visit Maiduguri, Borno, over the devastating flood in the state capital. grin

Mr Shettima disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja, at the 17th Annual Banking and Finance Conference (CIBN) with the theme,” Accelerated Economic Growth and Development: the state of play and the way forward,”

” After this meeting with the consent of the President, I will rush to Maiduguri. The whole city has been overtaken by flood.

“It is not peculiar to one part of the country. We are facing this challenges right from Bayelsa to Sokoto.

“Be rest assured that the President has the nation at heart and will do whatever it takes to salvage the state of affairs,” he said

Mr Shettima expressed the sympathy of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to all the victims of flood disasters nationwide.

“I want to use this forum to commiserate with the people of our great nation over the flood disasters we are recording all across the length and breath of this nation,” he said.

Many residents of Maiduguri have been displaced by flood, following the collapse of water channels at the Alau Dam.

The flood submerged residential quarters, roads and bridges, making many areas in the metropolis inaccessible.

A NAN correspondent, who went round the metropolis, reported that the flood submerged strategic areas including parts of the Shehu of Borno Palace, Maiduguri Central Market and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Other areas badly hit included the GRA, Maiduguri Zoo, College of Nursing, College of Agriculture and School of Health Technology, among others.

Many residents were seen evacuating basic items to areas considered relatively safer, with some youths erecting sandbags to prevent water from entering their quarters.

The state government is yet to issue official figures of casualties, but it has ordered the closure of public and private schools for two weeks.

Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani has advised Nigerians not to expect Dangote refinery to be their ‘father Christmas’ for petrol.

The statement comes after the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, said the pricing of petroleum products from any refinery, including the Dangote Refinery, is determined by global market forces.

Sani, in a post on his handle on Sunday, stated that Aliko Dangote, the Chairman of Dangote Group is a businessman who is in business and not for social services or fuel charity.

He explained that the NNPCL still holds the ace for the stability and the future of Nigeria’s energy sector.

“Dangote is a businessman who is in business and not for social services or fuel charity.

“Don’t expect him to be your ‘Father Christmas’ for petrol. grin

“NNPCL still holds the ace for the stability and the future of Nigeria’s energy sector.

PoliticsNigeria’s Aliko Dangote Regains Africa’s Richest Title From Johan Rupert by NwaNimo1(op): 9:16pm On Sep 07, 2024
Aliko Dangote, the Nigerian industrial magnate and chairman of the Dangote Group, has regained his title as Africa’s richest man, overtaking South African billionaire Johan Rupert.

According to the latest Forbes data, Dangote’s wealth currently stands at $11.7 billion, narrowly surpassing Rupert’s net worth, which has declined to $10.8 billion.

This shift marks the restoration of Dangote’s 12-year reign as the continent’s wealthiest individual, a title he briefly lost to Rupert in August 2024.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index also corroborates this trend, placing Dangote’s fortune at $13.3 billion, marginally ahead of Rupert’s $13.2 billion.

This slight difference, though not as significant as earlier valuations, reaffirms Dangote’s lead. Just two weeks ago, the gap between the two tycoons’ net worth was reported to be approximately $1 billion, with Rupert momentarily holding the top spot.

Rupert, the founder and chairman of the Swiss luxury goods company Richemont, which owns brands such as Cartier and Montblanc, experienced a decline in his wealth following fluctuations in luxury market demand and currency pressures.

Meanwhile, Dangote’s financial standing has remained relatively stable, allowing him to reclaim his position as Africa’s wealthiest figure.

Dangote’s Ambitious Growth Strategy

Aliko Dangote, renowned for his business acumen, has not rested on his laurels. The Dangote Group, one of Africa’s largest conglomerates with interests spanning cement, sugar, salt, and oil refining, has set its sights on further growth.

In a recent presentation during a media tour of the Dangote Refinery, the billionaire outlined plans to increase the group’s revenues to an ambitious $30 billion by 2025.

Central to this strategy is a significant shift in the group’s foreign exchange (FX) operations.

Dangote aims for the conglomerate to become Africa’s largest provider of foreign exchange, with the goal of reducing dependence on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for FX sourcing.

This move would not only bolster the group’s resilience but also enhance its competitiveness on the global stage.

Dangote further revealed plans to dramatically reduce the group’s reliance on the Nigerian cement market, which currently accounts for 75% of its business, down to 15%. Additionally, he projected a diversification of revenue sources, with 50% of EBITDA expected to come from foreign markets.

He also emphasized that 90% of the group’s future revenue would be generated in hard currency, underlining its focus on international expansion and export-driven growth.

What to know

For the Dangote Group, the highly anticipated Dangote Refinery was announced make its first shipment of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol on Tuesday, September 3, marking a critical moment in Nigeria’s energy sector, as the refinery, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, enters commercial production.

Having successfully completed its testing phase, the refinery is expected to play a key role in reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products.

The completion and operationalization of the refinery have drawn praise from several high-profile figures, including Nigerian billionaire and oil magnate, Femi Otedola.

The project is seen as a game changer for both the Dangote Group and Nigeria, potentially transforming the nation’s oil industry and positioning it as a net exporter of refined petroleum products.
