EXCLUSIVE: Bandits ambush Nigerian Army logistics convoy, cart away N28 million cash, weapons A stockpile of military hardware with about N28 million cash has been reportedly carted away by marauding bandits who ambushed a select group of Nigerian troops on reinforcement mission to quell pockets of communal clashes in Benue State, military sources told Peoples Gazette. Citing an internal army communication, a source told The Gazette that soldiers dispatched from Katsina-Ala Local Government Area to deliver weaponry to troops in Oju LGA (171km from Katsina-Ala) were overrun by an armed militia said to be from the Konshisha district of the state, in an attack believed to have occurred on Tuesday. Senior military officers said N28 million was also with the soldiers at the time of the ambush, all of which the attackers cornered and disappeared into the night on the fringes of the Benue River. “Yes, the bandits stole weapons and also about N28 million from the soldiers,” the senior officer said. “The entire situation has been under investigation since the headquarters heard about it.” The official said no conspiracy was suspect on the part of the soldiers but said it was a “deeply disturbing” situation that soldiers could be easily waylaid by a ragtag group of bandits. The source of the money and its purpose were not immediately disclosed to The Gazette. The logistics team, led by A.T. Adedayo — an army captain — was reported missing, including a general-purpose machine gun and over 2,000 rounds of ammunition. Sources said the ambush site was met deserted when a reinforcement deployed at Oju stormed the scene following an alert. A joint operation by troops of 72 Special Forces Battalion and anti-banditry formation, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), was planned to be conducted in the area to rescue the missing soldiers, a source said. An army spokesman could not be immediately reached for comments. Armed militia groups have continued to hold sway in remote parts of Benue, as the North-Central state grapples with recurring communal clashes and farmer-herder unrest. Governor Samuel Ortom survived an assassination attempt in late March when an armed gang suspected to be rogue pastoralists invaded his farm located at the outskirts of the capital city, Makurdi. https://gazettengr.com/exclusive-bandits-ambush-nigerian-army-logistics-convoy-cart-away-n28-million-cash-weapons/ |

His eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto Abubakar Sa’ad has enjoined Nigerians to close ranks and work for humanity as well as show respect to their individual religions bearing in mind that all are the creations of God. The Sultan also called on Nigerians to discountenance the call for break up which he said is emanating from the elite. The Sultan of Sokoto who gave this injunction on Wednesday at the meeting of the National Peace Committee stated no human being chose where to come from. He then urged Nigerians to add value into one another According to him, “as individuals we need to add value into ourselves and we should know that we did not create ourselves, God created us and when God was creating us he did not ask us where do you want me to bring you into the world. We just found ourselves in some various places. “So what we need to do is to see who we are and work for humanity because we are individuals, yes, but we have to close rank and work for humanity and while we are working for humanity you have to respect your own religion, if you respect your own religion you see what is right and wrong for you. “The only point I want to add is that I grow in a family where an Igbo man was the closest person to my father and he was entering any part of the palace and he died in the palace at one hundred and twelve years. His grave is right behind my palace there. That was what we know before,” he stated.” According to him, before there was nothing like whether this person is a Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa or whatever. We saw ourselves as human beings and if we continue to live like that there will be no problem. We as leaders we have to know that we are going to account for this leadership that God gave us on the final day. “So please let look at the various problems we have, let look at being our brothers’ keeper. We should not allow the elites to break us because they are the ones shouting break up.” https://www.blueprint.ng/sultan-of-sokoto-sues-for-peace-amongst-nigerians/ |
