The Federal Government of Nigeria has disclosed that no fewer than 3 million girls across the country have so far benefited from the World Bank’s $500 million loan to Nigeria, under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project. Minister of State for Education, Honourable Yusuf Sununu, made this known at a programme marking 2023 International Day for the Girl Child celebration on Wednesday in Abuja. He noted that the AGILE project has brought about substantial increase in enrolment of girls and retention in schools across the country. He further disclosed that while more than 90,298 girls have received financial incentives (scholarships) to help them stay in school, about 199,921 girls have received scholarships in the first 7 implementing states. He, however, said it was regrettable that girl-child in Nigeria is confronted with many challenges that girls have faced throughout history, including discrimination, violence, limited access to education, and healthcare, and unequal opportunities which have marred their path. Sununu said the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was aware of some of these challenges and has taken steps to address them, while also acknowledging that girls in Nigeria have continually displayed resilience, determination and the capacity to overcome adversity. The Minister cited example of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as one of the reasons why attention should always be paid to education of the girl-child, saying her appointment as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization was a testament to her exceptional leadership and dedication to global economic development. He added that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a world-renowned author, whose novels have brought global attention to African literature, gender equality, and social justice issues, Amina Mohammed, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, are a few role models doing the country proud. Sununu said: “In the Nigerian context, our government has undertaken significant policy initiatives aimed at addressing the specific challenges faced by the Nigerian girl child. “One noteworthy achievement is the substantial increase in girl enrolment and retention in schools with initiatives like the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) which has reached millions of girls across the country, providing them with education and life skills. “Under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria is expanding the frontiers of girls education with many more state signing on to participate in the AGILE Project. “This is anchored on the appreciable achievements of the AGILE project which is being supported by a World Bank $500 million loan and its achievements include reaching over 3 million beneficiaries across 7 states, initiating skills and digital literacy training for 6,000 girls, 90,298 girls have received financial incentives (scholarships) to help them stay in school, and 199,921 girls have received scholarships in the first 7 implementing states,” he said. He commended the United Nations General Assembly for endorsing and declaring the 11th of October as the International Day of the Girl Child, noting this recognition shines a spotlight on the unique challenges faced by girls and emphasizes the importance of ensuring their rights and well-being. The Minister said AGILE along with other projects including the Safe School Initiative, were a testament to the commitment of the federal government towards ensuring that every girl child in Nigeria has the opportunity to fulfill her potential, receive quality education, and lead a healthy life. “We believe that investing in our girls is not just a matter of social justice but also a strategic imperative for our nation’s progress and development,” he stated. https://tribuneonlineng.com/over-3m-girls-benefitted-from-500m-world-bank-education-grant-fg/ |

Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, Mele Kyari, has reacted to the re-emergence of long fuel queues in Abuja, Lagos and other states in the country. Politics Nigeria observed that queues started resurfacing across filling stations last week, with some persons saying there were plans to increase pump price. But addressing state house correspondents on Monday, Kyari attributed the development to return to road blockades as drivers had to travel longer distance to avoid such experiences. He said the supply of petrol was robust, adding that the federal government was also working hard to ensure supply of FX into the market to stabilise current I&E window around N770. Kyari said: “We have seen in very few states pockets of very low queues. Not unconnected with the road situation that we’re seeing the number of blockades on our road crossing products from the southern depots into the northern part of the country and it takes them a much longer time than they do now. “They have to reroute the trucks around many, many locations for them to be able to reach and that created delays and some supply gaps. But that has been filled and we do not see any of such problems again. And secondly, because of the full deregulation that we have in this sector, marketers are now competing amongst themselves. “So, you must have noticed some fuel stations will reduce price by two Naira and three Naira so customers will naturally run to the places where you have that reduction in prices. And that creates panic, because for those who don’t know why they are doing it, they will think that there’s something wrong happening, or there’s an ominous sign of scarcity or people start queuing up in the fuel stations. Otherwise, there is no challenge. Supply is robust. “We have over 1.4 billion litres of product in our hands both marine and land. Also, there are no issues around delivery of those products into the land. So, there is no fear, nothing to bother about. But we are also happy that the market forces are now playing out and marketers are competing and of course there are a few issues we’re engaging them to resolve alongside other agencies of government and critical issues around access to foreign exchange. “And as you all know, government is doing so much to ensure supply of FX into the market. We know that this FX markets will stabilize current I&E window around 770. And we know that those inputs that’s already happening, the inputs of government today will crystallize and also they will come to an equilibrium position in the FX market and this is a dream of this country. “So, they will have a stable FX market, stable product market where the prices of product will also speak to prices of other commodities. And this is already manifesting and we think this is the economic revolution that this country needs.” https://politicsnigeria.com/just-in-nnpc-reacts-as-fuel-queues-return-to-abuja-lagos-others/ |

President Muhammadu Buhari has suspended no fewer than 11 senior officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, as the probe of the shenanigans under the stewardship of disgraced Ibrahim Magu deepened. Authoritative Presidency sources told P.M.News on Tuesday night that EFCC executive Secretary Olanipekun Olukoyede was among the senior officials suspended. According to the source, ‘they were suspended for various alleged criminal and corrupt infractions”. The suspension of the officials was also to allow for unfettered investigation of the commission. “All the top officials in the agency have been suspended, their offices locked, to prevent any tampering with files at the commission”, the source added. President Buhari suspended Ibrahim Magu, the former acting chairman of the agency last week and appointed the director of operations, Mohammed Umar Abba, to hold forte. The source said Umar Abba survived the temporary purge, as he was found not to be a part of the suspected underhand dealings in the agency. Olukoyede became the Secretary to the EFCC in November 2018 following confirmation by the Senate. The Ikere-Ekiti born senior lawyer was a former chief of staff to Magu. He replaced Emmanuel Aremo, whose five-year tenure expired in July 2018. The former acting chairman of the agency is facing for the second week, grilling by the presidential panel headed by Justice Ayo Salami, over financial allegations and improprieties, including money laundering. He is facing tough questioning over allegations that he re-looted funds recovered by the commission. And that he accepted bribes to pervert cases of graft. He is also accused of mismanagement of recovered assets by the EFCC. Among the issues Magu is helping the panel to resolve are wide discrepancies in figures of recovered monies published by the agency. The panel has also asked him to react to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit(NFIU) report accusing him of siphoning money from the EFCC. NFIU report showed that a particular Bureau de Change, owned by Ahmed Ibrahim Shanono linked to the Acting Chairman based in Kaduna has more than 158 accounts and has been receiving huge sums of funds. The report also accused Magu of laundering money through Pastor Emmanuel Omale of Hand of God Prophetic Ministry. Omale was alleged to have bought a landed property on behalf of Magu worth N573 million in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. “Another individual who is helping in laundering funds for the Acting Chairman and who has been referred to in several petitions is one Pastor Emmanuel Omale (Hand of God Prophetic Ministry). “He is reported to have traveled to Dubai with Mr. Magu and his name was used in purchasing property in Dubai for Mr Magu. “As an unknown pastor, the NFIU’s report showed huge movement of funds ranging from N573,228,040.41,’’ the report said. Omale has denied laundering money for Magu. Magu has also been accused of allegedly failing to give proper account of missing 332 out of the 836 recovered real estate property as of March, 2018. https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2020/07/15/complete-sweep-buhari-suspends-efcc-secretary-olukoyede-10-others/ |
