When you speak of Biafra, you may do so with flippant tongues and rugged prose. You may postulate theories and fuel hatred the origins of which you've only read in books.

When some of us speak of Biafra we speak of uncles who fought in the war with adolescent hands.

We speak of fathers who served in the Red Cross, inhaling the smell of blood and wiping snot off their noses as they dressed the wounds of kith and kin whose names they knew.

I speak of a grandmother who two years ago sat in my home and spoke for hours about her journey through the war - nine children, and a husband who became a prisoner of war.

I speak of a grandmother who hid her daughters in the bush so that the Nigerian soldiers wouldn't take them as spoils.

I speak of an uncle who had kwashiorkor and ate lizards for protein - you know that 'myth' you read about eating cassava leaves and chasing lizards which suddenly became scarce? I speak of a mother and uncles and aunts for whom that was true.

When my grandmother spoke of Biafra it was in a single-tone voice, like one who was entranced.

As old as she was her failing memory could not erase the horror. She droned, and then she stopped. Her hands shook as she wiped her eyes and asked to be allowed to skip a particularly painful twist in her tale.

She spoke of fear and worry and hunger and strife and nearly losing one of her twins when her husband wanted them to bury him alive.

This twin cried a lot, you see. And one time when they were hiding from Nigerian soldiers, his wailing could have cost the family of eleven their lives.

He was my uncle. He ended up dying young anyway, and so was spared the agony of knowing that he could have taken his entire family along with him to the grave if on that day his crying had attracted the Nigerian soldiers.

When you speak of Biafra you speak of recent politics and celebrated rebel leaders and ethnic differences laced with mutual suspicion.

But when some of us speak of Biafra we speak of parents who were simply numbers, and not people - children stuck in the mire created by people they had no clue about, politics they could never quite fathom.

When we speak of Biafra we speak of people who we can touch, people who share the same physical spaces with us, and for whom drums of war were a night time lullaby and a daytime song.

When you speak of Biafra you speak of stories told you by your fathers.

When we speak of Biafra we speak of real lives lived by our fathers.

When you speak of Biafra you speak of 'history'.

When we speak of Biafra we speak of 'our story'.

When you speak of Biafra you tell us how to heal and when.

But when we speak of Biafra you ask us to forget.

Not​ advisable. Too risky because of greater chances of bleeding. best to wait till at least 6 weeks after delivery that is if it's vaginal.
