"There comes a time when, as much as you like or don't like it, your body tells you it's time to stop playing football. That's pretty much where I'm at, which is fine. It's something you have to accept. That's where I'm at.

"Yes [when asked whether he would be joining Jose's backroom team]. It's kind of been sorted out. We're still talking about it, to be honest, so there's nothing totally confirmed as yet. But it's looking likely, yes.

"It took a little bit of time to get over but there were some times when, for two or three days, I was thinking 'am I going to carry on playing or not?' or 'is it kind of worth it or not?' but that quickly passed.

"I got back fit and I wanted to finish on my own terms really. At least I could decide and not be forced because of that, so I was determined to get back fit.

"I understood after getting back fit that I wouldn't be playing as many games as perhaps I might have done, but that's something that I understood.

"I've just been training hard and trying to keep fit and have managed to play a few games so far and we'll see what happens towards the end of the season."

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Anthony Martial is fit and available to play in Manchester United’s UEFA Champions League last-16, second leg tie against Sevilla at Old Trafford on Tuesday, although it remains to be seen if Paul Pogba is available to face the La Liga side.

Pogba missed the weekend’s important Premier League victory over Liverpool due to a small injury, which the France international unfortunately picked up at the Aon Training Complex on Friday.

Paul was not pictured at training on Monday morning but, when asked about the midfielder during the following pre-match press conference, Mourinho revealed the player joined the session later on.

“He did [train] after you left,” Jose told the press, before the boss was then asked if Pogba could face Sevilla. "I don't know. We don't know yet, but he trained a little bit after you left.”

United defenders Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind are all expected to miss the game, while central midfielder Ander Herrera is also unavailable due to injury.

It remains to seen how Zlatan Ibrahimovic is and whether he might be involved, after the Swedish striker was pictured training with the group on Monday morning. He has been working hard on his fitness, since making his last Reds appearance in the 2-2 draw against Burnley on Boxing Day.

“Because I work in England, I'm happy with that. I'm more than honest because I work in England and because the fourth position is hypothetically a position where we can finish the league, I'm very happy with that because it's better for an English club that finishes fourth.

"It's better than playing that last play-off, which is always a risk, and be already qualified. So I think, in this moment, the English teams that are fighting for the top four, I'm pretty sure that all of them – [Liverpool boss] Jurgen [Klopp] and [Chelsea boss Antonio] Conte - will feel the same as me. We are happy that the fourth team goes directly to the Champions League. It's good for us.”

“I read some quotes from the worst manager in the history of the Premier League. Frank De Boer [at Crystal Palace]. Five games and five defeats and zero goals. He was saying that it's not good for Marcus Rashford to have a coach like me because the most important thing for me is to win.

"If he was coached by Frank, he would learn how to lose because he lost every game. Of course, Marcus - I have to be honest and give the credit to the people of the Academy that was responsible for his formation. I have to give the credit to Mr [Louis] Van Gaal who was responsible for his first season in the first team.

"I'm really happy - probably I think that Gareth Southgate doesn't mind that. He plays for Manchester United many, many matches. Does he play every match from the start? No, of course not. But he's a player that we trust and I told that before the Liverpool match where probably not many of you [the media] were expecting him to start.

"He started, he had a good match and I'm not just speaking about scoring goals because, for me, the analysis of a performance is much more than analysing the number of goals or assists. For me, the performance is globality and I'm really happy with Marcus.”

“He [McTominay] is playing well. He's using every minute on the pitch and outside the pitch to learn. He's humble - he wants to learn. He doesn't want headlines or flashes. He just wants to work, improve and be useful for his team.

"He was progressively getting chances to play. He got the injuries of Michael Carrick, [Marouane] Fellaini, [Paul] Pogba, [Ander] Herrera - basically all of the midfield players had one injury during the season and he was getting minutes and getting experience.

"The best way to improve is to be on the pitch, of course, but he's a good learner and I remember his beginnings when sometimes he was not even on the bench but I was taking him with the team as the extra player.

"I remember clearly him in the meetings, in the dressing room at half-time eating every word, listening to every thing. So I think his humble nature is what is making him a good player for us.”

“I think the Europa League final was internationally our most important match in the last years because we won the competition and that victory brought us to Manchester United's natural habitat, which is the Champions League.

"I think Manchester United has to be a team of the Champions League, so that victory last season was very important for us because we finished outside the top four in the Premier League and, by winning the Europa League, we won a title and at the same time, we went back to the Champions League.

"If we manage to win the tie and go to the last eight, I think it's a good achievement. But I think if we go to the last eight, life goes on and life goes on means that we will have hypothetically a quarter-final tie - we don't go to the quarter-finals thinking that we have no chance. Not at all. But the biggest problem we have in this moment and that we have to resolve has only one name and that name is Sevilla.”

“I don't think we are one of the best teams in the competition. But I think when a team arrives in the last eight, anything can happen. I think when you are in the last 16, it looks really, really far.

"But when a team gets in the last eight, you start smelling semi-finals and I think when a team gets into the last eight, the feeling is, of course, you are among the best. But anything can happen, so let's see what happens tomorrow.

"I think tomorrow is a very difficult match. I think we’re playing against a team that didn't lose against Liverpool home and away - scored goals in Liverpool and drew the match in Liverpool and when I say Liverpool, it's an example of a very good team and an example of an important stadium with big tradition.

"When I say Liverpool, it is just to say that Sevilla is a really good team and the result of the first leg is a result that leaves everything open for tomorrow. I don't feel that we have any advantage in this moment. We are going to try to prove that we are better [than the first leg] and to try to win the match tomorrow. But the reality in this moment is that we have no advantage at all.”

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Oasis007(m): 5:10pm On Mar 12, 2018
“Tomorrow is more important than Saturday [against Liverpool] because Saturday was a match for points that we still have 24 more points to discuss, 24 more points to try to finish in the top four, to try to finish third, to try to finish second if possible.

"But tomorrow and Saturday [against Brighton] are the matches where, in the end, you go to the next draw or you don't go to the next draw. So, of course, knockout becomes more important than league matches.”

there is a reason i made that statement..maybe you should have asked why
I do not need to ask coz it's obvious. You don't want him get injured while repping the Club that's paying him week in week out because of the World Cup - once in 4 Years Competition?!

You should be happy he's getting Minutes on the Pitch week in week out, Coz he's gonna get fitter and sharper, and the Form gonna be a huge Bonus to the Eagles in Russia.

If he loses his Shirt in the starting XI while not featuring on every Match Day, will you be happy?! We should be encouraging the Lads to be getting Minutes, instead looking for flimsy Excuse to justify their non-inclusion in the starting XI or Match Day Squad.

"He [Bailly] had a fantastic performance. An amazing goal! [laughs]. He showed great spirit to cope with the own goal and to cope with the injury as it was obviously painful. That's the Eric we love!

"I heard Gary Neville was asking [on Sky Sports] for Marcus Rashford to get a red card and I was scared maybe the referee was watching it at half-time!

"When we were more defensive in the second half, obviously, as Liverpool pushed for that situation, they brought a lot of players into central positions.

"Ashley Young had to come inside so Rashford was defending the corridor against Alexander-Arnold with a yellow card and with pressure.

"I made the decision to replace him with a player who could make one foul on Alexander-Arnold."

"You know, the fans can do what they want. I'm not upset at all with that reaction. I'm upset with the reaction they had to McTominay, a kid of 20 years, making all the right decisions.

"They want him to make the wrong decisions. When a kid decides to break the intensity of the game, not to lose it but to keep possession and play a backpass, he gives a solution of keeping the ball in the opposing half.

"It was the correct solution but so many top players, experienced players, wouldn't do it. The fans can react against me for my decisions - it's not a problem."

"The most important thing is the victory, the three points. Apart from that, against a team like Liverpool, you do not win if the performance is not good.

"I think, in the first half, we were very strong, very aggressive with a great intention to go and to hurt and, if possible, to score. In the second half, Liverpool were more dominant but it was the kind of dominance without danger.

"In some matches, David [De Gea] made phenomenal saves and today he didn't make one single important save in the game. So, in the second half, we were in control of Liverpool's dominance."

"We gave options to the players. Different options. I'm not a kind of mechanical coach that says A pass to B, B pass to C, C pass to D. I'm much more preparing my players to decide well in how they feel the game.

"They had different options, we also had the possibility of the long ball to Scott McTominay, to bring McTominay wide to play on Andrew Robertson in the air. Romelu Lukaku was confident he could be dominant in relation to Dejan Lovren."

"A perfect result. Three points, which are very important, but a perfect performance? I wouldn't go so far as to say that.

"I say perfect in relation to what the game gave us in the first half, it gave us the opportunity to be aggressive, direct, fast, intense and to score goals.

"Probably more - probably a third as Juan Mata's shot would have been [an] amazing and fantastic [goal]. The second half was a different match and we adapted to it."
