.......I am talking about same sura and verse. The word translated as beat can as well be translated to many words. An arab word does have many meanings. Context always matter that's why you can't do away with Tafsir when reading Qur'an for understanding.

POLYGAMY IN MALAYSIA

A Female Professor was invited for a lecture and the topic she chose to talk about was polygamy.

She talked on the benefits of polygamy, why women should embrace it and support their husbands towards achieving it.

As she kept emphasising on this topic, a lady from the audience raised her hand, stood up and introduced herself before speaking.

Lady: "Professor, I really appreciate this topic because am relieved of my fear, I never knew you are this simple and understanding. Your message has given me the opportunity to open up to you,"

She cleared her throat and continued....

"I have been married to your husband for the past four years, and between us, we have a set of twins "

To the greatest surprise of all in the hall, the Professor fainted and was rushed to the hospital.

After she was revived, she opened her eyes to see same lady standing by her bedside.

Lady: Professor I don't know who your husband is. I just lied to you to see if you can handle what you preach to others. Next time, please speak on subjects that you are good at. Don’t stand up on a stage and throw your thoughts around just because you have the title professor in front of your name.

The word ‘Id’ribuhunna’, the verb of which is Daraba. Daraba has many meanings, here are some of them:

“Daraba (darb) to beat, strike, …to play (to play musical instrument)l, to make music; to type (on a typewriter); to sting (scorpion); to separate; to impose (on someone or something); to turn away from, leave, forsake, abandon, avoid, or shun (someone or something).

....that's why Tafsir is so much important to fully understand some verses in the Qur'an.

....major Reason I do have issues with Alu Sunah and Tabligs. Dey can dish out unverifiable Hadiths eh. Below is what Allah [SWT] say in the Qur'an.

“Men are guardians over women because Allah has made some of them excel others, and because men spend (on) them of their wealth. So virtuous women are obedient, and guard the secrets (of their husbands) with Allah’s protection. And (as for) those on whose part you fear disobedience, admonish them and keep away from them in their beds and rebuke them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Surely, Allah is High and Great.” (Surah an-Nisa, Ch.4: V.35)

Though I expect him to refer you to below Hadith of Rosulullah [SAW];

“Surely, I enjoin you to treat women well, for they are in your authority. You do not have any right to treat them otherwise, unless they commit a clear obscenity. If they do so, you may forsake their beds and then strike them without violence, but if they obey you then you ought not to do so.” (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi, Kitab ar-Rida‘, Hadith 1163)

Domestic Violence shouldn't be tolerated but it ain't limited to women alone. Wife can commit domestic violence against husband too.
