https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXySekhUUMU The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has regretted that his ministry could not completely eradicate the rising number of out-of-school children in the country after seven years as minister. The minister, in his keynote address at the meeting of the National Council on Education on Thursday, blamed the rising figure on the “state governors’ lukewarm response to the suggestion for the declaration of an emergency on education, especially at the basic education level.” The meeting of the National Council of Education, the highest decision-making body in the sector, began with technical sessions on Monday and continues until Friday with the theme: “Strengthening of Security and Safety in Nigerian Schools for the Achievement of Education 2030 Agenda”. The minister said the choice of the theme is the prevailing security situation in the nation’s educational system “and the inevitable challenges it poses to the public and private sectors alike.” He said the meeting would be an opportunity to “take stock of progress in the education sector, identify the challenges and consider policy options that will enable us move rapidly towards achieving our twin global agenda – Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Charter 2063.” Out-of-School-Children There were about 10.5 million out-of-school children in Nigeria in 2015 when Mr Adamu became Nigeria’s education minister, according to the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAWsM9XzwAU The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) on Tuesday said the exposure of plastic bottles to sunlight can increase the risk of cancer, hormonal imbalance, and gastrointestinal issues, among other health conditions. A statement signed by the General Manager of LASCOPA, Afolabi Solebo said the government plans to engage sellers and buyers of plastic bottled drinks through advocacy and sensitisation programmes on the dangers of such practices. Solebo noted that the Lagos State Government has no intention of banning the sale of plastic bottled drinks as stated in a social media report. “The Government is keen on ensuring that both consumers and traders are educated and enlightened on the health hazard of consuming plastic bottled drinks that have been exposed to sunlight,” he said. While informing that the essence of the display of plastic bottles by sellers is to create awareness of the availability of their product or merchandise, he urged manufacturers and producers alike to make available alternative dummy bottles to retailers of plastic bottle drinks for use as product display instead of the actual plastic bottled drinks being exposed to sunlight.

What concern them with all those things this Lagos government make things difficult for poor masses everyday. At the end they will create another tasks force to be pursuing those that are selling it now. |
Hope this is evidence-based. Providing dummy bottles is the best way to go. |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTRA_K08ghk Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission raided the offices of black market currency dealers in Abuja on Tuesday in a bid to halt the rapid fall of the naira. Naira plunged rapidly between Monday and Tuesday to more than 840 in Abuja a week after the the Central Bank of Nigeria said it will replace higher notes to fight counterfeiting, inflation and insecurity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AH66tXQvdmI President Muhammadu Buhari has backed the move, saying it will help fight corruption. His finance minister criticised the policy. Hopes the policy could help fight money laundering appears to have backfired as suspected holders of illicit cash scramble to change their stash into foreign currencies, fueling demand for dollars and a further plunge in the value of naira. The currency crossed the 800 mark for the first time weekend and the decline has shown no sign of abating. On Tuesday, traders told PREMIUM TIMES they were buying a dollar for as high as 840, implying they would sell more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEZRSiNFXSs I sold my properties to sustain scholarships for students – Kwankwaso Mr Kwankwaso says he has always invested in education and human development because of their impact on people’s lives. |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEZRSiNFXSs The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabi’u Kwankwaso, has pledged to continue to strive hard toward making Nigeria great. He also said he had to sell some of his properties to sustain the scholarships he gives to university students. Mr Kwankwaso said these at the 3rd Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso Colloquium organised by the Kwankwasiyya Development Foundation to mark his 66th birthday on Monday in Abuja. The former governor of Kano State described education as the best investment politicians can make in the people, saying he had always invested in education and human development because of their impact on people’s lives. Mr Kwankwaso, who said that he had always given himself targets on what to do for humanity, said more than 3,000 students benefited from his scholarship programmes from 2011 to 2015 when he served as the state governor. He said he created the foundation as a pay back to the people for their massive support for him during elections in Kano State. “When we advertised in 2019, believing that there are few people with first class because in our first scholarship we said anybody with first class, we exhausted all in Kano. Second class upper, we exhausted them. “We were on second class lower when I left government in 2015 and that’s why we have over 3,000 of them in 14 countries across the world on scholarship,” he said. Mr Kwankwaso said that Nigerians across the states of the federation benefited from the scholarship because it was opened to all persons resident in Kano, irrespective of their states of origin. “For the foreign scholarship when we advertised we have over 400 who applied for the first class in Kano. “Before you know it, we screened and screened and we came up with 370. I am so happy they have all graduated. They are all back to Nigeria, some in the various countries,” he said. Mr Kwankwaso said he was also happy that some of the beneficiaries were students of private universities in Nigeria including 148 students of Mewar International University in Karu Local Government in Nasarawa State.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ratv56BjpEU Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sent an open letter to presidential candidates ahead of the February 2023 presidential election, urging them to demonstrate leadership by directing their “campaign councils and political parties to regularly and widely publish the sources of their campaign funding.” SERAP said: “We are concerned about the vulnerability of political parties to corruption. Disproportionally large donations seeking specific outcomes or preferential treatment can subvert the wider public interest.” In the open letter dated 29 October, 2022 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “Transparency would help to control inappropriate influence on political candidates, ensure fairness, equality, and accountability in Nigeria’s democracy.” SERAP also said, “Transparency in campaign funding would improve public trust in Nigeria’s politicians and political parties, and show your commitment to prevent and combat corruption if elected.” According to SERAP, “If Nigerians know where the money is coming from, they can scrutinise the details, and hold to account the candidate and party that receive it.” The letter, read in part: “SERAP would consider appropriate legal actions to hold you and your political party to account for any infractions of the requirements of campaign funding, as provided for by the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended], the Electoral Act and international standards, even after the 2023 elections.” “SERAP urges you to sign ‘transparency pacts’ that would mandate you to disclose the identities of donors and widely publish donations and contributions including on your party website and social media platforms.” “Party corruption undermines the legitimacy of government, public trust and, ultimately, democracy.”
