There's a big deal in the market already now (if you know you know). A lot of people are cashing out. However, if you are still afraid of the glut season, you better dust your boots and put your hands to work. I'm telling you, it will pay off eventually. |

IamAsiri: Well done sir! Please what type of green net did you use? Is it the type used for constructing those greenhouses? That usually have green nets wrapped at the sides and the transparent HDPE UV films on top? If that's the type, did you dismantle the one you initially set up? Thank you. This is a much cheaper version of the other one, we did not use UV films or any of the standard materials. This one is more like a make shift nursery house. But we did not dismantle the other one |

aquadude15: on an average sir. how many big basket of tomatoes should one expect from 1000 stands of tomatoes with GAP It depends on the type of tomato you planted and the average quantity/weight it can produce. If your tomato plant can produce 1.5 to 2kg per plant, then you should expect 30 to 40 big baskets (of 50kg) |

I made a prediction sometime last year, I never knew it would come to pass this early. People in the south west and south east need to wake up from slumber. The northerners have done well in terms of being the major players in agriculture, but the southerners have even better potential to produce food by/for themselves.
Just a few days of (tomato, pepper, onion, etc) prevented from getting to the south, we already see what's happening in the market.
If you have intentions to go into agriculture, you better graduate from intentions to taking steps. |

Demmyk: This is surely a remarkable success. Thanks for sharing your experience. But how do you market them ? Kindly share how you sell them and is it a productive business. Thanks To start with, tomato production is very productive if you know your way. To market, we first do a market survey. Then we see if our product can compete with the produce in the market. Then we consider the current prevalent price in the market. Then we can start talking to the necessary people. Sometimes, all you need is just one or two links to the market. If your produce are good and the price is competitive, then you should not have plenty issues. Meanwhile, never think you can come and do one man mopol. It doesn't work in the agriculture sector. This paragraph can take a whole day to explain. However, this is just one of the many approaches to marketing your tomato |

tpben: Good evening all. Please if you have had an experience regarding this please help asap.
There is this land I got recently that is close to stream but I'm having serious headache with it regarding the type of soil.
I noticed the soil is a clay soil and that it holds on water. My fear is on the soil drainage when the rain comes since I'm not in control of rain and I'm in the south that experiences heavy downpour yearly.
I have never grown vegetables on a soil like this. I have always had loamy and sandy soils that drains well with raised bed and have not had issues.
What is your experience growing pepper, cucumber, tomatoes, etc on a clay soil.
Drought problems made me source for a land close to water but this clay is giving greater headache now.
Please help asap with your suggestions.
Thank you. Well, I will not advice you to plant on a clay soil (cos it seem its pure clay from the way you're talking). You needs to avoid certain situations like damping off and likes, so I'll advice you to get another that has access to water but not clayey soil. |

Hollar007: I just came across your thread, I must say it's been so interesting and very insightful. I have been considering to start a tomato farm as well and i'll like to get in touch with you in due time. I'm based in Lagos but I'm planning to acquire land at Oyo town to at least keep for when I'll start. I'm a civil servant and will like to first test run on a plot then expand to like 5acre but for now I'll get d land and use for cassava till I can plant myself nd I'm already saving up for d land.
Kudos to you again.. I hope you are having a better farming season Thank you. Welcome to the world of Agriculture!! |

kemstol: Please I'd love to know the dimensions of the ridges you made and how many of such ridges are on a plot to house 2k per plot. I'd love to improve on mine too Regards I will take my time to do the calculations for you, I hope you understand it. I'm going to base the calculation on the spacing on your drip irrigation tube/tape (30cm, 40cm or 50cm). Now let's assume you make a 20m long bed in 20places, (each bed at about 1m wide and walkway of about half meter). So let's pick 50cm spacing, 20m long bed is same as 2000cm (you remember 100cm make 1 meter) So we have 2000cm bed. 2000cm÷50cm =40plants and per line. Using double line per bed, we have 80 plants per bed. Now multiply that by 20beds = 1600. So you should have about 1500 to 1600 pet plot, using 50cm spacing and double line per bed. Similarly for 30cm 2000cm÷30cm = approx 65plants. Double line per bed =130 plants per bed. 130plants × 20 beds on the plot That is about 2600 plants per plot. PLEASE NOTE: If you are a newbe in tomato production, you may not be able to cope with the spacing or double line arrangement. Contact me on 07068990624 if you need further guidance

safarifarms: I can't touch the palm, they are in my neighbours farm. They are planted up to the 1m from the boundry making it cast shadow in a section of my farm from afternoon. If that is the case, just leave a few meters allowance before making your beds. But that's should not deter you |
