safarifarms: Obatobi1 can tomato do well beside a palm plantation where the area gradually begins to be shaded from past 12pm and fully shaded by 5pm. I'd used it for pumpkin this year and wondering if I can switch to tomato next year. By the way the pumpkin didn't seem to be affected. Though I don't know if it would have performed better elsewhere. Of course you can!! It us very suitable. You may just have to trim the palm fronds before you start a planting cycle. |

safarifarms: From my little experience on a very small scale backyard garden, tomato fruit cracking is caused by irregular watering. If the plant has been starved of water for a while and then water become available later it will suck up excess water to the fruits. The sudden surge of water to the fruits causes the cracking. Exactly, you have said just right. That is at least 80% of the cause. Thank you |

waxingmoon: Thanks for the reply. I planted Demon f1 this year and I am willing to plant Habanero but don't know if Piquante Red can average demon f1 in terms of yield. . In this part, I would say Piquante has slightly better market value than demon. So you may want to look at that instead of just yield in volume. |

waxingmoon: Pls how fruity is your Piquante Red compare to Demon f1? . To start with, Piquante red is hot pepper (ata rodo) while Demon F1 is chilli pepper (finger pepper, usually used to make powdered pepper). Piquante has larger fruits and fills up a bag/sac/basket more quickly than demon, while the fruits on demon plants are usually more though smaller (finger shape). After harvesting, demon produces fruits much quicker than piquante. See the difference in the picture attached

ideepaul: yes I didn't mulch, but irregular irrigation? No, we had excessively high rainfall between mid-April to June, if not for the high ridges we did and maybe liming, it would have been disastrous. How much is the 1.2m mulch? And was yours the 300m length? I haven't used it before, so how long could it last if managed properly, and used continuously If you had mulched, you might no have had that much challenges. Yes, I have used the 300m length before and its quite good. If well managed, you could use it up to 5 or 6 seasons |

ideepaul: @oga obatobi1, I did Padma early this year, and faced issues of fruit cracking, how have you surmounted this challenge, and would you use the 30cm spacing without mulching film...nice work you are doing sir, I am also learning greatly from you! If fruit cracking is the major problem you faced, then I can categorically tell that you did not mulch your field and probably did not irrigate the field. Irregular or unstable moisture level is one of the major causes of fruit cracking. You need to wet your field atleast every morning (and probably morning and evening at the peak of dry season), this way you can be sure your plants are getting stable and required volume of water. And when you apply mulch, you can be sure of having a stable soil moisture and control UV radiation on the soil. And to your second question. With the explanations above, you can guess my answer is NO Thank you |

brtrip: Have you heard of anna f1? Do u know if it can be grown in Nigeria And if there is market for it. The variety you planted what is the target kg of tomatoes to be expected per plant. And is there any variety in Nigeria that can yield up to 10kg or more per plant ? Sorry if i asked too much questions. Yes, I have heard of Anna F1, a very good variety with resistance to a couple of disease including root knot (to a reasonable extent) I believe it can be grown in Nigeria, though it performs best in greenhouse and is mainly cultivated by Kenyans. The tomato variety I planted, if well managed should give you at least 2kg per plant. I doubt if there's any variety that an give you that amount in open field. That target can only be achieved in a well set up greenhouse (I stand to be corrected) |

dmz1: please sir how do you carry out your soil treatment? For nursery, I use thermal sterilization, mixture with media and adding of compost manure (if need be) before filling in the trays. For the field, it depends on the condition of the soil. Such treatment may include enriching the soil (with organic/compost manure), treatment with nematicide, amongst a few other processes. |

Yemighty2: How many times would you use the mulching film? How many meters(wide)is this mulching film . The much film could be used as much as 6 times if well managed. Then, it is about 1.5 meters wide, although it could vary by a few inches depending on the company that produces it. |

Obatobi1: Well, except its a green house, I don't see reason for such aggressive pruning. The work of the leaves cannot be undermined, cos the health of the plant can largely be determined by how the leaves look. Although excessive leaves may be said to compete with the fruits and other parts for nutrients but it should be done with caution. The scars from the prunnings could be a potential inlet for diseases. And when the plant starts fruiting/ripening, the plant naturally starts reducing leaves while concentrating its strength on fruiting/ripening |

okoroemeka: Another thing I noticed from that farm is their no nonsense aggressive pruning of leafs and branches,,my brother each crop is just left with 20-30% of the leafs remaining , everything else is stripped bare, unlike your farm that has all the original leafs left on it. Well, except its a green house, I don't see reason for such aggressive pruning.
