Inadvertent its a Msc student with no published research work and one is scheduled for an interview what do one prepare towards? |
@ op You mind is need to be restructured back to default setting. Most of the guys who commented were ones in your shoes, you should put your purpose and plan for future closet to you than a girl. Girls aren't worth the dilemma, guess you need a therapist because all this words wouldn't stop you at night from thinking about her and calling to beg ones more. Undergraduate love story has just ended |
Hello everyone, The MasterCard foundation scholars program application for 2018 opens in sept for selected schools in the us and University of Pretoria application closes by sept 15. I personally did a lot of research into the program and found Nigerian badly get nominated not to mention selected for the scholars program. Kenyan's and Zimbabwe are the bulk of the students awarded the scholarship position, I think a lot of resources and strategic planning within this thread should be carried out to enable aspiring scholars get the most coveted position. While on research finding I found a particular Kenyan bank paved the way for its citizen, I still must commend scholarstical, happyday, DreManuel and others for a job well done. #teamfall2018 |
RexCheeng:sorry I open quite a large no of tabs and its difficult to find. Whenever I come across I would do just that |
So it’s definitely possible. I would say the most important thing is to show the committee you are not the result of your low GPA. You can do this in several ways. Firstly, you should mention it in your essay (why, what happened, why it won’t happen again and how you are a capable student). Secondly, make sure your letters of recommendation can attest to your intellectual curiosity and caliber as as student. Thirdly, some argue that taking the GRE can strengthen your application. Again, I think this also varies among schools. At UW-Seattle and UChicago, staff members at the Admissions Office told me taking the GRE wouldn’t benefit me or hurt me in any manner and for me not to waste time and money on it. However, schools like Boston College and Boston University state on their website that taking the GMAT/GRE can strengthen your application if you have a GPA lower than 3.0. I took the GRE and did relativelly well. Culled from a forum Good luck guys |
This application cycle, I decided to switch from clinical social work to macro social work and applied to over seven schools and received an acceptance from five (UChicago, Boston College, UW-Seattle, Columbia; all four gave me funding/scholarships ranging from $10-28K, the fifth was a SUNY offering no funding) and one rejection (UMichigan). Ironically, the private schools I applied to will be slightly cheaper than the state school I applied to ($7K/year vs $14K/year) since the private schools offered me a hefty scholarship/funding package. Schools with larger endowments tend to be generous with merit/need based funding. |
Last application cycle (Fall 2015), I applied to three schools (UPenn, CUNY Hunter, NYU) just to see if I could get into them and what the process entailed. I got into Penn and NYU (though rejected from Hunter) with very little funding ($4-6K) and I decided not to attend since I would be well over $120K in debt with tuition and living expenses. Moreover, at this time, I had my heart set on becoming a clinical social worker. I wasn’t surprised by the Hunter rejection because they receive over 1,000 applications and the tuition is relatively affordable and is well known and respected in the NYC area. Through perusing past topics on this forum, I’ve read similar stories where students are accepted at USC, but rejected at a state school like SFSU or SDSU. |
I tend to believe private schools are more liberal in accepting students with lower GPAs due to a lower yield while public universities are more competitive due to the lower tuition. Our trajectories and undergrad history are very similar. I graduated from undergrad with a 2.7 GPA about 8 years ago due to personal problems and lack of focus and ambition during school. |
Getting that very answer is quite easy with this simple steps: Introduce yourself. State why you are interested in their lab. Highlight areas of overlap between the science in the faculty member’s lab and research you are conducting, or interested in. Mention papers you have read and what you found interesting about them. Conclude by asking if they are currently taking students and by saying that you would like to discuss the possibility of working in their lab by telephone, skype etc. What next? Some Faculty members may take a long time to reply due to multiple commitments. Follow up with another email after a week elapses. Don't forget to pray knowing everything depends on God. |
@Scholastica16 thank you so much on your indept analysis, you just gave another push. Yesterday's topic on tribal selection by supervisor is something I feel is another major reason most mails don't get replied. I did a study on supervisor's to look into research student they work with and I found a similar pattern to issues raised. Do you advice looking into same pattern for easier funding? Sir I was given a cool reply to send my transcript and CV almost three weeks now which I couldn't do till now because I had difficulties getting my CV out from this Nigerian schools, I had to even pay to extra cash to smuggle it out. Can you go through my CV and what possible action can be taken to avoid same reason on strong research profile. Thank you so much everyone adding value |
Now at this point do I go back to my undergraduate supervisor to explain things to him so I can get my work published after several years. We never saw eye to eye, all data presentation where done by me without his supervision. Help needed pls |
I just got this reply in respect to the mail I shared What he meant was that you have not been publishing your reseach. You dont have enough publication to convince him in his research area to convince him. Dr (Mrs) Olajumoke Olusola Adewumi Department of Animal Production and Health College of Animal Science and Livestock Production University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. |
It will be challenging for you to get an email answer from some of these professors because they are very busy. If the professor that you worked with in Nigeria has any connections that could help you that would be good. All professors in Canada have to provide research funding for their students and usually by this time of year their labs will be full. You should also inquire about starting in Jan 2018 or Sept 2018. You can apply directly to the graduate programs in different universities that have -viticulture programs. |
Guys thank you so much, your expect advice where what i needed. Abt a month a ago I got a mail from a prof in canada stating graduate research positions in canada are funded by the supervisor who accept one. @happyday that mail you earlier interpreted gets me confused knowing he should be paying my fees not requesting me to self fund. |
I had to write back to him stating am a bit naive abt what he meant by strong research profile with my detailed CV on research work done. Am getting a feeling he meant my work been published still in doubt but still yet to get a response back from him almost 3 days now. |
Thank you for your interest in my research. It would be a pleasure to serve as your postgraduate research advisor. I only accept student for full research degree as either MPhil or PhD research. Your CV shows that you current do not have a strong research profile and therefore would be difficult to secure a AA scholarship to study at AA If you are able to provide evidence of scholarship for the research, we can consider your request before you apply to AA. I wish you all the best and hope you can secure a research scholarship for your study plan. st |
Within 2 days he replied with this mail but confused now |
