The Executive Chairman Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr Stephen Odey has locked out staff of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for coming late to work today, Friday 28th July 2017.

Expressing his disappointment Dr Odey said he was displeased with the attitude of staff towards work and that the action was to instil discipline among staff and ensure quick service delivery to all stakeholders “I was not impressed when I got here by 8 o’clock and most offices were locked, nobody should force us to do our work. People are looking for this job, you have it and you are taking it for granted,” he said.

He advised staff to be punctual and remain committed, while warning that those who go against the rules will face disciplinary action.

According to Dr Odey “I will pardon you today without query because this is the first time, next time would not be the same, we should all try to support government efforts by showing commitment to work and being at our duty post at all times” He warned.

Stressing the need to enthrone commitment and efficiency, he said all civil servants are to be at their duty post from 8am to 4pm daily.

It was gathered that, upon the SUBEB Chairman’s arrival only 2 out of 20 staff in directorate cadre and 26 staff out of 75 on salary grade level 7 to 13 had reported for duty, while 10 out of 15 junior staff were present.

PRESS RELEASE - Nigeria: Authorities break up rally to commemorate 2014 massacre in Zaria

A peaceful annual demonstration commemorating the murder of civilians by Nigerian security forces has been violently broken up by armed police in Zaria, northern Nigeria.

About 10,000 had gathered to mark the event which commemorates the 25 July 2014 killings of 32 people marching in support of Palestine during the annual Al-Quds Day procession.

Eyewitnesses report seeing 18 trucks filled with police storm the site of the rally and preventing people from the entering the venue.

An IHRC report into the 2014 massacre found that the peaceful demonstration had been attacked by Nigerian soldiers without warning and without provocation. Some of the fatalities died in custody after being savagely beaten and bore signs of torture on their bodies. At least two more civilians were killed the next day in a similar attack on the funeral preparations.

Among those killed were three sons of the IMN leader Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, a fierce critic of political corruption as well as the so-called Boko Haram movement.

The massacre marked the beginning of a violent turn by Nigerian authorities against the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) which would result in the slaughter in December 2015 of over 1000 IMN supporters at the hands of the Nigerian military.

The violent turn has included attacks on demonstrations, demolition and confiscation of IMN properties, arrests of its supporters and repressive legislative measures designed to weaken the group.

Last Thursday 20 July, the federal government was accused of starting operations to confiscate the site of the Husaiyniyyah Baqiyatullah centre belonging to the IMN in Zaria. Labourers protected by the Nigerian military were seen fencing off the property and carrying out building works in what IMN supporters believe is the first step to seize the land.

The centre was razed by the authorities following the 2015 attack on the IMN. Hundreds of people were killed defending the site.

Along with his wife Zeenah, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, has been held without charge following their arrest during the later 2015 massacre of IMN supporters. Both were shot during the attack in Zaria in which at least 1000 IMN supporters, including a further three sons of the couple, were killed.

The couple remain in the custody of the State Security Service which is stubbornly refusing to implement a release order issued by a federal high court judge on 2 December 2016 on the basis that their detention is illegal and unconstitutional. The judge gave Nigerian authorities 45 days to unconditionally release the pair.

ARMED ROBBERS MET THEIR WATERLOO.

On 23/07/2017 at about 2100hrs the IGP Special Tactical Squad (STS) Kano Sector and Special Anti Robbery Squad Kano while on joint Patrol intercepted an armed robbers’ blockage between Lamba and Dansiri Villages in Bichi LGA along Kano to Katsina Road. These armed robbers normally robbed traders and other innocent Nigerians after weekly Market Day in Chiranchi LGA of Katsina. The patrol was hitherto the complaints received by the Command from traders, nearby villagers and other road users on the activities of robbers most especially on Sunday which was a weekly Market Day in Chiranchi Market Katsina State.

The Commissioner of Police CP Rabiu Yusuf psc directed the STS and SARS to mobilize and deploy all machineries at their disposal to arrest the suspects and save the situation. On the fateful day, the robbers on sighting police teams, opened fire which resulted to a shootout of almost 15minutes. Later 3 suspected armed robbers were fatally wounded, 2 English made AK47 Rifle, 1 locally made Pistol, 2 AK 47 Rifle magazine, 47 rounds of live ammunition, 3 cartridges and 1 cutlass. The suspects were confirmed dead by medical doctor at a hospital. No casualty from the olice while investigation is ongoing.

The Commissioner of Police CP Rabiu Yusuf psc calls on the members of the public to continue to support the Command by giving timely information on all suspicious persons, vehicles, houses, warehouses, shops, garages and any other object seen within their neighbourhood for immediate verification by detectives and other experts.

Five suspected members of Boko Haram group have been arrested by Kano state police at Gayawa area of Ungogo Local Government area of the State. The suspects were arrested following an an active intelligence from the Nigeria Police Force indicating that remnants of BH Group who escaped from Sambisa Forest were regrouping in some states in the North including Kano State.

In a bid to ensure that they don’t attack any location in any State, the IGP Ibrahim K. Idris NPM, mni set up Joint Police Special Team comprising of special tactical Force (STF), Special Anti Robbery Squad Kano, the Force Intelligence Unit and other under cover operative Units as well as Conventional  Police Team under the Supervision of CP Kano State Command. The joint team has been on the trail of the remnants of Boko Haram Group in various locations in Kano and environs for some time.

The Special Police Team has prevented several attempts in various places in Kano and its environs by this Boko Haram Group to attack innocent citizens in the state. The sustenance of this operation by Special Forces yielded positive result in the morning of today when the team intercepted the remnants of BH Group while they were about to move to attack public centres, places of worship and other places where people gathered to carry out their means of livelihood.

The Police Team came under attack by the group but they were repelled in the process.They were able to arrest five suspects(three male and two females).Three police operatives sustained injuries from the IEDs and gunshots launched on them by the terrorist group.They are currently receiving treatment in the hospital. All the suspects confessed that they are active members of the BH group that were involved in several killings of innocent Nigerians in Kano and other North Eastern States. They also volunteered confessional statement indicating the planned attack they were about to carry out in Kano and other North Eastern States.

On Saturday 22nd July 2017, 4 other suspected Boko Haram terrorists along members of their families have also surrendered to troops of 27 Task Force Brigade.

According to them, they were escaping from Boko Haram terrorists hideouts at Kafe, Njubulla and Buk in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.

Similarly,  troops of the same formation in conjunction with vigilantes, at about 6.00pm on the same day,  arrested a suspected Boko Haram terrorist at Bungai in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State. The suspect, Madu Kwari, aged 25 years was intercepted while fleeing the terrorists hideout adding that he escaped along with 3 others still at large.

In a related development, troops of 159 Battalion have also arrested one Hassan Yusuf, aged 43,  a suspected logistics supplier to Boko Haram terrorists.

The suspect who hailed from Dangana in Chad Republic, was intercepted while attempting to cross over to Chad with smuggled spare parts and other items across the border in a Toyota Hilux vehicle with registration number AE-646-VBY  (Benue). He is being interrogated further.

Chelsea have announced the signing of Spanish striker Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid in a £70m deal.

The Spaniard signed a five-year contract with Chelsea and will now fly out to the United States to join up with his new team-mates.

He becomes Chelsea's most expensive signing, with the transfer fee surpassing the £49.73m they paid Liverpool for Fernando Torres in 2011.
