THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Thursday, warned that nothing would stop the union’s nationwide strike, if the Federal Government failed to honour its part of the agreement reached in 2009. The chairman of the University of Ibadan chapter of the union, Dr Ademola Aremu, while addressing newsmen noted that the education sector would suffer should the Federal Government fail to fulfil its part of the deal. While calling on members of the National Assembly, traditional rulers and other well meaning Nigerians to prevail on the Federal Government to fully honour the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement before the education system was thrown into avoidable crisis, he remarked that it was unfortunate that government was still playing hide and seek over the implementation of the 2009 agreement in spite of the fact that the agreement was reached after over two years of negotiation. According to him government is still implementing ”Table Two of the FG/ASUU agreement'' which ought not to have lasted for more than three months after signing the agreement. “We do not want to heat up the polity but let it be known that nothing may stop the strike if the Federal Government fails to honour its part of the agreement. The agreement is due for review next July while the old one is yet to the fully implemented. |
THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that many of the candidates seeking admission to universities this year would not be admitted. A release made available to the Nigerian Tribune and signed by the Public Relations Officer, Mr Timothy Oyedeji, said because of the carrying capacity of universities, coupled with the rush for university education by candidates, who mostly did not like to have higher education in other institutions like polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education, “vast majority of candidates who applied to be admitted to universities will not be admitted.” The release further said the reason for this low admission rate would “not be because they have not scored high grades, nor for their failure in the post-United Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME), but wholly because of quota constraints.” It said out of the 368 tertiary institutions in Nigeria, five, with the University of Lagos in the lead, were chosen by 406,389 candidates as their most preferred institutions, out of the total 1,493,604 that sat for the 2011 UTME. |
THE meeting between the Federal Government, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA), which was held at the Three-Arm Zone office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to resolve and prevent the looming industrial crisis, ended in a deadlock on Monday. To this end, the three-day warning strike, according to the organised labour, commences tomorrow across the country. The meeting, which commenced around 4.00 p.m. on Monday, could not resolve the lingering crisis, as the position put forward by the government was not acceptable to labour. At the meeting were the SGF, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim; the Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu; the chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi; chairman, Salaries and Wages Commission and other government representatives. Others were the president of the NLC, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar; the TUC president, General Peter Esele; NLC Acting General Secretary, Owei Lakemfa; TUC General Secretary, John Kolawole; NLC Deputy President; Promise Adewusi; TUC deputy president Musa Toli; NLC vice president, Issa Aremu and other labour leaders. |
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has restated its commitment to the N150,000 cash withdrawal limit policy for individuals and N1million for corporate bodies, saying measures had been put in place to ensure that the policy works. The Central Bank governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, while speaking at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) permanent orientation camp in Ise, Ise/Orun Local government Area of Ekiti State at the weekend, explained that the policy would help curb crime rate, control interest rates and reduce the charges by banks among other benefits. Represented by the Ado-Ekiti branch controller of the Central Bank, Mr Samuel Ogungbayi, Sanusi, in a lecture entitled: “Youth Empowerment as a Tool for Sustainable Development: The Central Bank of Nigeria Interventions” also reiterated that a product, “Islamic banking” was not supposed to be viewed with emotions but by what it had to offer. Speaking after the lecture, in which the apex bank reeled out products to encourage the corps members undergoing orientation to set up enterprises, Sanusi said the new cash policy would work because banks would start charging for deposits beyond the limits set for individuals and corporate organisations. Meanwhile, Mallam Sanusi has blamed the high rate of youth unemployment in the country, which he put at 41.6 per- cent, among other social indicators, for the social melee and poverty in the country. Presenting a paper with the same title as the one presented in Ado-Ekiti at a programme organised by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Yikpata, in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, at the weekend, the apex bank boss broke down the youth unemployment figure as 23.3 per cent for males and 17 per cent for females within the age bracket of 15-24 year |
The Ekiti State government has sacked about 5,000 workers across the 16 local government areas of the state. It was gathered that the state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, ordered the immediate sack of the council workers from the local government service of the state. The affected workers cut across all cadres in the councils. The chairman of the state Local Government Service Commission, Chief Aderemi Ajayi, who confirmed the sack of council workers, said the names of the affected workers had been removed from the July 2011 salary vouchers of their various councils. According to Ajayi, the affected workers were alleged to have gained employment through the back door and issuance of fake certificates and falsification of birth certificates. He explained that the lists of the affected staff were compiled by a special verification committee set up by the governor to look into the activities of the local government administration in the state. |
Following a violent demonstration in Ikere town on May 9 this year, the Ekiti State government has sacked the executive of the Students’ Union Government of the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti, just as the school has been directed to reopen. This is coming on the heels of an announcement by the college authorities that the school, which had been closed since May 9 over the violent protest, would reopen for normal academic activities tomorrow, Monday July 18 and “commence first semester examinations immediately.” According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the college, Mr. Tokunbo Olakunle, the dissolution of the students’ union executive was because of “the failure of the student union executive to follow laid down procedure in calling a congress and embarking on a demonstration as contained in the student union constitution.” The statement added that “all members of staff of the college who have been mentioned to be involved in the disruption of the academic programmes will be made to face appropriate disciplinary action.” |
The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army in Enugu has paraded 21 Enugu State University of Science and Technology students for allegedly torturing and forcing some female students to have sex among themselves. The students, most of who confessed to being cultists, told journalists that they took video shots of the lesbian act because they had been offered money by some influential Nigerians. The idea, the suspects said, was to take tapes of the scenes to their partners in Europe. Shortly before parading the suspects on Saturday, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Maj. Gen. Sarkin Yaki Bello, who spoke through the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, said the cultists, were arrested in their hideouts at Agbani on the outskirts of Enugu between July 8 and 12, 2011. Bello said the patrol team of 103 Battalion moved to the ESUT following persistent gunshots at the institution on July 4 and arrested one of the masterminds of the crime, Mr Franklin Anikwe, with five rounds of ammunition. |
The recent downpour in Lagos and its attendant floods have hindered the provision of medical services in some hospitals in the state and destroyed their medical records. Departments such as the records department, the X-ray unit, laboratories and even wards were still flooded as at Saturday evening. A patient, Mr Moses Opara, said that he had not been attended to, as the file containing his medical history could not be located due to the flooded records room. The medical history files of the patients were placed on tables and benches to prevent further destruction by the flood. A nurse, Mrs Tokunbo Adewale, said they had resorted to scooping water from flooded wards and units with bowls and dustpans. |
