Politics / Most Popular Nigerians In The Year, 2015 by obrien29(m): 3:30pm On Nov 28, 2015
This year has not come to an end, but there are not much days left for this year to pack up and die. The management of Better Times blog has decided to compile the list of the top ten most popular Nigerians in this current year that will soon expire. The reader of this article and list should know that this list solely belongs to the blog and is the blog’s knowledge of the happenings and events of this year.
2015 will always be remembered for years to come. History was made in Nigeria, and indeed, Africa. It had its ugly side and the beautiful side. Nigerians witnessed what they had never witnessed before, and there have been the very ugly sides.
These men and women on this list are here because of the popularity their doings or scandals evoked in the country. Few of them had scandals, others achieved something worthwhile. A reader should note that he is not subjected to believe in this list.
10. Orji Uzor Kalu
He is a wealthy man and a politician from the South East, Nigeria. He had served as the executive governor of Abia State. He had been in the news for a long time because of the interest he had in the race for the FIFA President. He was also chosen as the chairman of the world ship owner’s association. He dropped his bid for the FIFA President.
9. Rev Fr Ejike Mbaka
He is a reverend father: a clergy. He is the director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Nigeria. He made headlines and received criticism because of his stance on the failed re-election bid of Ex-president Jonathan. He has remained popular since then. His stance on the issue of Biafra also made him popular. He is in a good relationship with his state governor and the presidency.
8. Linda Ikeji
She is a professional blogger and an entrepreneur. She is the CEO of Linda Ikeji’s blog. Her blog is one of the three most visited Nigerian websites. She made headline when she purchased a massive and expensive mansion in Banana Island. In fact, most bloggers are in blogging because of her success.
7. Diezani Alison-Madueke
She was the minister of petroleum during the Ex-president’s tenure. Most Nigerians believe she is corrupt and that she catered away a lot of Nigerian’s public money. She made headlines when it was reported that her residence in London and Abuja were searched, and that her mother and one other woman appeared in a British court. She was the topic for over two months. She sought sympathy with the use of her supposed illness. She has not been prosecuted.
6. Babatunde Fashola
He is the immediate past governor of Lagos State. He is a member of the political party, APC. He was the topic when it was rumored that he was among the ministers that would be appointed by Buhari. He was also the topic when the excessive spending of Lagos State’s resources was exposed. He was the topic when he was given three-in-one ministerial position, the highest in Buhari’s cabinet.
5. Nnamdi Kanu
He is the founder of the pirate radio, Radio Biafra. He lives outside the country. He visited Nigeria, and he was arrested by the Federal Government. He has been in detention since then. His detention has sparked Pro-Biafra protests and rally across the former Eastern region of Nigeria. His detention has renewed the spirit of the want of Biafra, and his detention has led to online debate and tribalism on the social networks.
4. Bukola Saraki
He is the current senate president of Nigeria. He got to the seat of the senate president by the help of PDP senators. And because of his flouting of the party’s rules, he had problem with his party. The CCT are still trying to prosecute him for false declaration of assets. He has been the topic since then.
3. Chibuike Amechi
He is the immediate past governor of Rivers State. He is a member of the political party, APC. He has been the topic since the beginning of this year and prior to this year. He had issues with the Ex-president. One of the hottest parts of this year’s politics was when Amechi’s name was rumored to be on Buhari’s list of ministers. His administration was probed by the River State Government and it was found that he mismanaged his state’s resources, but the issue was swept under the carpet. He was made a minister through undemocratic means.
2. Goodluck Jonathan
He is the immediate past president of Nigeria. He made the headlines through out this year. So many corruption scandals are attached to his name in the media. Since he left the seat of the president, the media has still not left him. He is respected for his democratic ideology and his concession in the first quarter of the year.
1. Muhammadu Buhari
He is the current president of Nigeria. He made the headlines through out this year. He is sort of a “celebrity” more than a president. His campaign was carried into the most interior of all Nigerian villages. He is respected and popular among Nigerians. His incorruptibility helped him beat the ruling party. However, he has come under criticism as of recent, because of his non-fulfillment of most of his campaign promises.

Good people, great nation, that is what we are. Nigeria is really blessed. But Nigeria is disturbed by the too many cases of her children who are corrupt. And the Federal Government have agreed to fight this problem called corruption. However, we cannot leave the fight for the government alone, we have to help in every way we can, because this country belongs to us all. And what is the little way? The little way is to report any case of corruption, bribery and all elements of social decay around YOU.

We are here to change the society; we are here to touch lives; we are here to make life better. Note that there is no profit or gain for anyone involved, including the management of BETTER TIMES; however, we believe that the future will smile anytime we are remembered.

Health / Discover How Nutritious Avocado Can Be by obrien29(m): 8:49am On Sep 22, 2015
Hass Avocados are a nutrient-dense fruit. Why is nutrient density important? According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, nutrient-dense foods are those foods that provide vitamins, minerals, and other substances that may have positive health effects, with relatively few calories. They are lean or low in solid fats, and minimize or exclude added solid fats, added sugars, and added refined starches, as these add calories but few essential nutrients or dietary fiber. Nutrient-dense foods also minimize or exclude added salt or other compounds high in sodium. Ideally, they are in forms that retain naturally occurring components such as dietary fiber.

With nearly 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients per 1-oz. serving, avocados are a good nutrient choice.

Avocados – the Nutrient Booster

Why increasing absorption of these nutrients matters: Alpha- and beta-carotene can form Vitamin A in the body, which is important for proper growth and reproduction as well as good eyesight. Vitamin A is involved in immune functions, vision and cellular function. Vitamin A also supports cellular growth and differentiation, playing a critical role in the normal formation and maintenance of the heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs.

Some food sources of vitamin A include:

sweet potatoes – baked sweet potato “fries” go great with avocado dip
spinach – try in in a whole wheat pita and avocado sandwich
carrots – try combining with your favorite guacamole
mango – add to a flavorful fruit salsa

Avocados Nutrient Profile:

Avocados contribute nearly 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, including 4% of the recommended Daily Value (DV) for vitamin E, 4% vitamin C, 6% folate, 8% fiber, 2% iron, 4% potassium, with 81 micrograms of lutein and 19 micrograms of beta-carotene.

Nutrient Benefit or Health Benefits

Amount per serving (1-oz)
2-3 thin slices

Dietary Fiber

Dietary fiber is the non-digestible form of carbohydrates and lignin. Dietary fiber naturally occurs in plants, helps provide a feeling of fullness, and is important in promoting healthy laxation. Dietary fiber that occurs naturally in foods may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. Children and adults should consume foods naturally high in dietary fiber in order to increase nutrient density, promote healthy lipid profiles and glucose tolerance, and ensure normal gastrointestinal function.

2 g

Folate/Folic Acid

Folate helps produce and maintain new cells. This is especially important during periods of rapid cell division and growth such as infancy and pregnancy. Folate is needed to make DNA and RNA, the building blocks of cells. Both adults and children need folate to make normal red blood cells and prevent anemia. Folate is also essential for the metabolism of homocysteine, and helps maintain normal levels of this amino acid.

27 mcg

Iron

Iron carries oxygen throughout your body so cells can produce energy. When levels of iron are low, fatigue, weakness and poor tolerance to temperature extremes often result.

0.2 mg

Magnesium

Magnesium in the body serves several important functions: contraction and relaxation of muscles, function of certain enzymes in the body, production and transport of energy, production of protein.

9 mg

Potassium

Dietary potassium can lower blood pressure by blunting the adverse effects of sodium on blood pressure. Other possible benefits of an eating pattern rich in potassium include a reduced risk of developing kidney stones and decreased bone loss.

150 mg

Niacin (Vitamin B3)

Niacin, is a B-vitamin, it helps the digestive system, skin, and nerves to function. It is also important for converting food to energy.

0.6 mg

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)

Riboflavin (vitamin B2) works with the other B vitamins. It is important for body growth and red blood cell production and helps in releasing energy from carbohydrates.

Less than 0.1 mg

Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5)

Pantothenic acid, is a B-vitamin and is essential for growth. Along with biotin, it helps the body break down and use food. Pantothenic acid also plays a role in the production of hormones and cholesterol.

0.4 mg

Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6)

Pyridoxine (vitamin B6), also a B-vitamin, helps the body to: make antibodies (antibodies are needed to fight many diseases), maintain normal nerve function, make hemoglobin (hemoglobin carries oxygen in the red blood cells to the tissues), break down proteins and keep blood sugar (glucose) in normal ranges.

0.1 mg

Thiamin (Vitamin B1)

Thiamin (vitamin B1), also one of the B-vitamins, helps the body's cells convert carbohydrates into energy. It is also essential for the functioning of the heart, muscles, and nervous system.

Less than 0.1 mg

Vitamin E

The body also needs vitamin E to boost its immune system so that it can fight off invading bacteria and viruses. It helps to widen blood vessels and keep blood from clotting within them. In addition, cells use vitamin E to interact with each other and to carry out many important functions.

0.59mg

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

Vitamin C is important for your skin, bones, and connective tissue. It promotes healing and helps the body absorb iron.

2.6 mg

Vitamin K

Vitamin K helps your body by making proteins for healthy bones and tissues. It also makes proteins for blood clotting. If you don't have enough vitamin K, you may bleed too much.

Health / What You Never Knew Banana Could Do by obrien29(m): 8:20am On Sep 17, 2015
Fifteen Uses of Banana
1. Treat Damaged Hair. Our own Diana Herrington detailed Dr. Oz’s quest for the best damaged hair treatment out there. The results? Bananas! Click here to read Diana’s step-by-step guide treating your hair with bananas.
2. Whiten Teeth. Dying for some pearly whites? Rub banana peel on your teeth for about two minutes every time you brush and you’ll be well on your way to that perfect smile.
3. Prevent Wrinkles. Check out this recipe for a 3-time-a-week banana anti-aging mask!
4. Treat Insect Bites. Rub some banana peels on the bites to alleviate the itch.
5. Treat Warts. Bananas are rich in potassium, which is said to help treat warts.
6. Treat Bruises, Cuts, and Scrapes. Potassium also helps with the healing process for cuts, scrapes, and bruises.
7. Get Rid of Splinters. Can’t get that pesky splinter out of your skin? I feel your pain. Luckily, if you press banana peels onto the splinter, the fruit’s natural enzymes will work to get that sucker out.
8. Exfoliate Your Skin. Check out a great banana body sugar rub recipe here
9. Attract Birds & Butterflies. Like humans, birds and butterflies just love the taste of bananas. If you’d like to watch birds, leave a banana out.
10. Fertilize Your Plants. Dried ground banana peels make a fantastic mulch for seedlings and new plants.
11. Polish Leather & Silver. No need to invest in pricey, and often toxic, leather and silver cleaners. Instead, rub banana peels on the surface and buff with a cloth.
12. Combat Aphids. Nobody likes a damaged plant. Bury some cut up banana peels 2-3 inches deep around the base of the plant.
13. Dog Treat. Bananas are a perfectly safe, and perfectly healthy, treat for your beloved pooch!
14. Purify Water. OK, this is perhaps best left to the professionals, but research has suggested that banana peels can actually absorb toxins in polluted rivers. But, if you ever find yourself lost in the woods with only a banana peel, you’ll be prepared!
15. Make “Ice Cream.” Craving the sweet stuff but don’t have the time, calories, or budget to spare? Simply blend a frozen solid banana in a food processor or blender. You’ll be surprised how much it tastes like soft-serve ice cream! For more info on frozen banana ice cream, click here.

Health / The Wonderful Tree: Coconut, And The Medicinal Value by obrien29(m): 11:12am On Sep 10, 2015
Cocos Nucifera is called coconut in English. It contains glycerioles of capprylic, capric, lauric, myristic, palomitic, stearic, oleic and lineoic acids. Every part of coconut is useful and also medicinal.

One of the earliest mentions of the coconut dates back to the One Thousand and One Nights story of Sinbad the Sailor; he is known to have bought and sold coconuts during his fifth voyage. Tenga, its Malayalam and Tamil name, was used in the detailed description of coconut found in Itinerario by Ludovico di Varthema published in 1510 and also in the later Hortus Indicus Malabaricus. Even earlier, it was called nux indica, a name used by Marco Polo in 1280 while in Sumatra, taken from the Arabs who called it جوز هندي jawz hindī. Both names translate to "Indian nut" In the earliest description of the coconut palm known, given by Cosmos of Alexandria in his Topographia Christiana written about 545 AD, there is a reference to the argell tree and its drupe.

Historical evidence favors the European origin of the name "coconut", for no name is similar in any of the languages of India, where the Portuguese first found the fruit; and indeed Barbosa, Barros, and Garcia, in mentioning the Tamil/Malayalam name tenga, and Canarese narle, expressly say, "we call these fruits quoquos", "our people have given it the name of coco", and "that which we call coco, and the Malabars temga".

The OED states: "Portuguese and Spanish authors of the 16th c. agree in identifying the word with Portuguese and Spanish coco "grinning face, grin, grimace", also "bugbear, scarecrow", cognate with cocar "to grin, make a grimace"; the name being said to refer to the face-like appearance of the base of the shell, with its three holes. According to Losada, the name came from Portuguese explorers, the sailors of Vasco da Gama in India, who first brought them to Europe. The coconut shell reminded them of a ghost or witch in Portuguese folklore called coco (also côca). The first known recorded usage of the term is 1555. The specific name nucifera is Latin for "nut-bearing".

The origin of the plant is the subject of debate. O.F. Cook was one of the earliest modern researchers to draw conclusions about the location of origin of Cocos nucifera based on its current-day worldwide distribution. He hypothesized that the coconut originated in the Americas, based on his belief that American coconut populations predated European contact and because he considered pan-tropical distribution by ocean currents improbable. Thor Heyerdahl later used this hypothesis of the American origin of the coconut to support his theory that the Pacific Islanders originated in South America. However, more evidence exists for an Indo-Pacific origin either around Melanesia and Malesia or the Indian Ocean. The oldest fossils known of the modern coconut dating from the Eocene period from around 37 to 55 million years ago were found in Australia and India. However, older palm fossils such as some of nipa fruit have been found in the Americas. Since 1978, the work on tracing the probable origin and dispersal of Cocos nucifera has only recently been augmented by a publication on the germination rate of the coconut seednut and another on the importance of the coral atoll ecosystem. Briefly, the coconut originated in the coral atoll ecosystem — without human intervention — and required a thick husk and slow germination to survive and disperse.

Coconut palms are grown in more than 90 countries of the world, with a total production of 62 million tonnes per year. Most of the world production is in tropical Asia. Coconut trees are very hard to establish in dry climates, and cannot grow there without frequent irrigation; in drought conditions, the new leaves do not open well, and older leaves may become desiccated; fruit also tends to be shed. The extent of cultivation in the tropics is threatening a number of habitats, such as mangroves; an example of such damage to an ecoregion is in the Petenes mangroves of the Yucatán (Wikipedia).

The bark of the plant dried and a burnt ash is effective remedy for skin ailments like rashes, black spots, scabies and measles. It can take care of tooth ache and the fluid can be used for mouthwash. These shall be discussed in full details in our next health post.

Remain healthy, exercise and eat well. Plant a coconut tree today and save the environment and help preserve our world.

Health / The Healing Power Of Aloe Vera by obrien29(m): 11:00am On Sep 10, 2015
Aloe is the name given to a variety of perennials of the Liliaceae/Aloeacea family. There are over 325 species in this genius. Aloe Ferox, Aloe perryi, Aloe barteri called West African Aloe, and Aloe Barbadensis, and also called Aloe Vera.

Aloe Vera has been in much use from the time immemorial. Wall paintings of ancient Egypt showed Aloe Vera was used by the Egyptians to treat catarrh. Among the Jews, Aloe Vera was used as an ingredient for embalming. The body of Jesus was wrapped in linen soaked in myrrh and Aloes.

Aloe Vera is a native of southern and northern Africa, came to Greece in the 4th century BC, to China in the 10th century AD and finally to Europe in the 11th century AD. Even though there are many species, they all have similar constituents: Anthraquinone, Glycosides, Aloin, Resin and others.

Aloe Vera is the most common of the species found in Nigeria today. It grows well in flower pots. It needs a balanced measure of sunshine and water to survive; it does not grow very tall (just about 1-4 feet). It is a light green in color with white spots. You must know that there are different species of Aloe, so one should not be surprised to find different sizes and color of Aloe. The West African Aloe (Aloe barteri) has very broad, succulent leaves and bright red flowers which can grow as high as seven feet.

Cultivation of Aloe

Aloe vera has been widely grown as an ornamental plant. The species is popular with modern gardeners as a putatively medicinal plant and for its interesting flowers, form, and succulence. This succulence enables the species to survive in areas of low natural rainfall, making it ideal for rockeries and other low water-use gardens. The species is hardy in zones 8–11, although it is intolerant of very heavy frost or snow. The species is relatively resistant to most insect pests, though spider mites, mealy bugs, scale insects, and aphid species may cause a decline in plant health. In pots, the species requires well-drained, sandy potting soil and bright, sunny conditions; however, Aloe plants can burn under too much sun or shrivel when the pot does not drain water. The use of a good-quality commercial propagation mix or packaged "cacti and succulent mix" is recommended, as they allow good drainage. Terra cotta pots are preferable as they are porous.

Potted plants should be allowed to completely dry prior to rewatersing. When potted, aloes become crowded with "pups" growing from the sides of the "mother plant", they should be divided and repotted to allow room for further growth and help prevent pest infestations. During winter, Aloe vera may become dormant, during which little moisture is required. In areas that receive frost or snow, the species is best kept indoors or in heated glasshouses. Large-scale agricultural production of Aloe vera is undertaken in Australia, Bangladesh, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, China, Mexico, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa, along with the USA to supply the cosmetics industry with Aloe vera gel (Wikipedia).

Since Aloe Vera grows quickly, it should be planted in every compound. It should be planted in flower pots most especially for it to survive. The owners of the compound should take good care of it and see that it does not lack of water and care. Aloe has several medicinal values which we will treat in the next health issue on this blog.

Aloe can be used for cancer, constipation, intestinal ulcer, impotence, suppressed menstrual pain and a whole lot of skin diseases like eczema, dandruff, ringworm and others. This is a very good plant everyone would need at home and around all. Live a nature loving life today and see the benefits you would get. Plant a Aloe today and help the society!

Literature / A Short Story: A Disaster Ahead Of You by obrien29(m): 1:50pm On Sep 09, 2015
You were seating in a dark place; so vague and unending. You saw nothing there. All you could see was the darkness that covered the whole area. You weren’t sure where you were, but it seemed like you were alive, and you were breathing. You looked down on what you were seating on; there was nothing there, just as dark and vague as the other parts in that place.
“Hello.” You heard a voice, and then you saw a light in that vagueness. You lifted your head and looked toward the direction of the light. You saw no figure there. “Hello.” The voice came again.
“Yes, who is that?”
“Turn around,” the voice said.
You turned around. Behind you stood a sickly figure who had a frightening face. The figure was thin, it looked like a human, but you could not really say if it was a human. The figure’s head was large, it had big bulging eyes, it had a hump on its back and head, and it stood on its head. Its thin and hairy legs were up in the air.
“Hello, Donatus,” it said.
“My God, who are you?”
“Do not be afraid.” The figure moved its hands in the air, twisting its fingers. He came closer and stretched out his long fingers. “I am your god. I am you, so do not be afraid. We are one in one.”
“Excuse me. I have no other god, I have a God that I serve.” You were afraid, but you could challenge anyone who challenged the God you served.
“I know you do.” It smiled, and you saw its stained teeth. You concluded that even if you had a god, it would never be as ugly as that. “The God you have rules you through me. I am in you.” It paused. It changed its posture, the head went up and the legs came down, but he no longer stood, now, he floated in the air.
“I do not believe you.”
”Believe me or not. My duty is to tell you this thing which I have come to say.” It moved in the air. “There is a disaster ahead of you, which can be averted. I want to do what I can to help you. Other gods would not have gone this far.” It paused. And then it continued. “A leopard has spots, which can never be washed off. You can use the whole Atlantic Ocean, but you can never wash off a leopard’s spots. You are who you are; do not deny who you are. And you should never struggle against who you are, or it would be the worst mistake you have ever made.” The figure vanished into the air after these words.
There was a sudden transition from a vague place to a place of lights. You opened your eyes to the lights of your room. You moved your body and felt the lush bed cover. You stretched your hands and grabbed the pillows. You sighed. It was just a dream. Thank God it was a dream.
You got up and looked at the wall clock. It was two o’clock. You were an hour late to your schedule. You ran to the wardrobe, picked your clothes; you went to the shoe rack and got your shoes. It didn’t take time to put these things on, and next, you found yourself a taxi that took you to Rita’s place before the journey.
Rita was at home when you got there. She would not have agreed to see you if she had not been tricked by the news that you were travelling out of the country. You were pleased and you seemed in control of the situation. She smiled as she saw you, the first time she had ever done that. Rita would have called you a fool and she would have cursed you as she used to do. She would have told you she doesn’t mingle with a poor church rat like you; she is of a high class. And when you had told her you loved her, she called you a slowpoke who wants to draw her into your web of poverty. But you loved her and you wanted her; you even swore to her that you loved her more than you loved your mother. She spurned your advances.
Now, you sat with her in her verandah. She smiled, touching the pocket of her jeans trousers. You told her today is the day, you would travel out of the country. She kept quiet, looked down on the ground. She frowned. She was acting as if she was displeased.
“I do not want you to go,” she said.
“Do not worry, I will be back. I want to go for some business related issues. And it is for you I am doing this.” You touched her nose with your middle finger and this made her laugh. You brought out a wad of money from your pocket and handed it over to her. “Take this. Take care of yourself while I am away.”
She gave an excited shout. “All these for me?”
“Yes.” You stood up. “I have to go. I have an appointment.”
“Alright. Goodbye.” She gave you a kiss on your cheek. You thanked her and walked away. You turned, and you saw her waving, you waved back. You would miss her, but you knew she would not miss you. Anybody can call you a fool for this, but you do not care, all you wanted was her attention and you were satisfied.
You got into a taxi. You sat calmly as the taxi snaked through the city’s streets. Your mind went back to the dream that you had earlier that day. The dream did not make any sense to you. Your people believe in the power of dreams; however, you do not understand this one. You gasped. Two phrases played in your mind over and over again: ‘The leopard’s spot’ and ‘a disaster ahead of you.’ What could it mean? You hissed, and then brushed the dream aside. It is not worth a worry.
You got off the taxi. You entered the building where you would take the briefcase. It was an uncompleted building. Some rooms in the building had been completed and awaited the final touch. You entered one of these rooms. It was here you took the briefcase from a man whose face was masked. You didn’t understand why the man wore a mask; you didn’t care anyway, you just had to be finished with this. You took the briefcase and got into the taxi. The taxi took you to the airport.
Your phone rang while you waited for the flight. You brought out your phone from your pocket; it was the boss who called, whoever he was. “Hello,” you said. You detested the way the boss spoke, you hated his arrogance.
“Remember the deal,” the boss said. “You take the briefcase through all the processes. I have already called those I know. If things go wrong, do not call me. If things go well, you can call me and inform me it is successful. If you call and implicate me, I will make sure you die.” Die was his last word as he cut the phone.
You put off the phone. The flight was announced. You stood, took in a deep breath and walked to the plane. You bowed your head and every eye seemed to be on you. You cursed yourself that you chose this; you wished you had remained poor.
Your heartbeat increased. Your legs began to shake. A stone was somewhere inside you, it weighed you down and every step looked so heavy. You began to pray in your mind. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallow be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth … No. Hail Mary, full of grace, the lord is with you, blessed are you among women …
“Eh, you, stop there!”
You froze on that spot. You looked and you saw the uniformed drug police walking toward you. He came to you and told you to open your briefcase. You said your last prayer, and knew you would die by hanging. Jesus, I love you, all I have is you, so do with me what thy please. You opened the bag.
“Yes.” The drug police used his hands to turn what was in the briefcase. He touched every part of the briefcase; he checked for a lump somewhere, there was none. “You can go.” He smiled.
You gave a sigh of relief. You walked to the plane, smiling. You were surprised that there were too much people in the plane. You were surprised that you were not nervous as the plane took off. You were surprised that a passenger could use the toilet in a plane. You enjoyed your first flight. You did not like the food. And you wanted to be through with this and return to your Rita.
The search at the other country’s airport was more serious than the first. They scanned the briefcase with equipment, tore the leather of the briefcase and called other experts who also checked before they cleared you. “Sorry for the disturbance. We were simply doing our job,” the custom officers said to you. “Welcome to our country.” You smiled at them. You collected the briefcase and left for your waiting taxi.
The taxi took you through the city. You watched the furnished residential buildings, the office buildings, the lawns and the shrubs. You took in a deep breath; the air was cool as the city was cool. You rubbed your palms on the glass. You wished you had camera with you; you would have snapped pictures that you would show Rita, she would be pleased.
The taxi moved into a tight corner of the city. The buildings in that part of the city had blackened walls and chimneys; the roads were muddy. No one had ever told you that a place as such as this existed in a wealthy country.
You followed the driver of the taxi. He went into one of the buildings on that street. You lifted a foot after another. You avoided the mess on the ground, and the giant rats that ran about the whole place. God have mercy, you prayed.
You got into a room with the driver. The driver spoke in low tones to a man whose back you saw. The man on suit faced the open window in the room. The driver spoke in a language you couldn’t understand. The man said a few things. The driver nodded to his words. He turned to you.
“He said that you shall dropped the bag and go.” The driver had a poor command of English. “I will gave you the ticket back to you country. You can wait some place and wait for plane. You man in you country shall pay you.”
You nodded. The driver collected the briefcase and took it over to the man. You looked at the man on suit and guessed that he checked the briefcase to make sure everything was intact. He said some words to the driver. The driver came up to you.
“He said that every is there,” the driver said. “We can go now.”
You followed the driver out of the room. You turned back to see if you could catch a glimpse of the man in the dark room. The man did not turn. You hissed. You wondered if there was anything in that briefcase after all. If there was something there, the custom officials at the airport would have got it. You did not care; your job was done.
You were happy when the man in your country gave you the money for the job. He called you and told you to collect the briefcase from a taxi driver he sent to you. You collected the briefcase and rushed to Rita’s house. You were not ready to open the package in the briefcase yet. You wanted to surprise Rita and tell her you got the money for the job you had done and you are surprised the man paid you so handsomely. You sang in your heart as you approached the house. You have gotten the wealth; now, Rita is yours.
There were people weeping in front of Rita’s house. Young and old women, and a handful of young men. You were shocked. There had been a disaster. You prayed it had nothing to do with Rita. You searched for Rita; you could not see any sign of her.
You were informed by her brother that Rita was stabbed to death. Rita had gone alone to her boyfriend’s house. You knew she had a boyfriend. She made a promise to you that she would inform him that all was over between the two of them. She had gone to his house, and the neighbors heard a scream from their room. When the neighbors called the police, the police came and found the door of the room ajar. Her boyfriend had fled and the lifeless body of Rita was discovered in the room. She was stabbed on the chest.
You screamed. You wailed. You sat on the floor, placed your hands on your head. You felt like rolling on the floor. You wished you were there, you would have fought that her boyfriend and saved her life. You stood, took the briefcase and walked away.
You walked to the bridge. You opened the briefcase and stared at the money in there. Tears fell on the money, wetting some of the currency. You closed it. You hissed.
“I would have prevented this. I would have. It is my fault.”
You moved a foot and threw the briefcase into the river below. The briefcase rolled and the currency scattered in the air. When you turned around, a small crowd had gathered. You wished you were them; not bothered and not disturbed.
You should never have fought against who you are. The monastery was the best answer. You would join one of the monasteries in the country. May her soul rest in peace, amen.

Literature / A Short Story: A Disaster Ahead Of You by obrien29(m): 1:43pm On Sep 09, 2015

TV/Movies / The Film: Half Of A Yellow Sun by obrien29(m): 6:30am On Dec 12, 2014
This is a historical film which is adapted from a great book of
the same name. It was directed by Biyi Bandele. It was shot in
English language, and it was shot in Britian and Nigeria. The
film was adapted from Chimamanda Adichie's Half of A Yellow
Sun. It stars great British and Nigerian actors: Chiwetel Ejiofor,
Thandie Newton, Onyeka Onwenu, Genevieve Nnaji and a lot of
other actors.

It was released in Nigeria on the 1st of August, 2014. That was
after it had passed over series of censorship related problem.
It was destined to be great film, with a budget of 8 million
dollars. But all didn't go well, as the film didn't come out as
expected, especially for the ones who have read the book. With
the opinion of people who have watched the movie, and my
own personal opinion, I have no other business than to say
that the movie was below what we all expected.
The common mistake the film made was changing the story
line and filtering out some important parts of the book; the
characters in the movie lacked depth, and the dialogue in the
movie was somehow unreal and unbelievable. There might
have been a problem when it was shot that it wasn't shot well;
I will say it was because Biyi Bandele directed his first film. The
film was good anyway, so I will rate it 2.5/5.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave 2 out of 5 stars and
also commented that "there is a heartfelt quality, but
unfortunately the film is often stately and sluggish with some
every daytime soapy moments of emotional revelation. At other
times, it looks more like a filmed theatrical piece."

It is a great film nevertheless, and you need to watch it now, it
is out there in the cinema. When you watch it or if at all you
have watched it, come here and feel free to rate and critic the
film.

Actually, this is not supposed to be news but critic of the over hyped film, or to you is the film not over hyped? You can also critic it if you have watched it.

Politics / Playing With Corruption by obrien29(m): 2:23pm On Dec 03, 2014
For unto every one who hath shall be given, and he shall have
abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even
that which he hath (KJV, Mathew Chapter 25, Verse 29)
If you
are a Christian or you are not, but you have heard of the story of
the temptation of Jesus Christ, then you suppose to know that
the devil himself can quote bible than any Christian can do. I
picked this above verse from the bible, because I am fascinated
about this particular verse, and it was quoted by one of our
blessed Nigerian politician. Yes, the devil himself can quote bible!
Anyone can quote the bible, if he has a reason for that. I don’t
know the particular year the politician quoted this; though, it was
quoted by Festus Okotie Eboh (1919-1966). I don’t know why he
quoted this, but many people accused him of being corrupt, so
probably, it was his way of defending himself against the
accusations. Doesn’t that sound nice? Trying to defend yourself
against corruption accusation with a quote from the Holy Bible.
And this man was one of the most corrupt politicians in the first
republic; he was a British stooge, he flaunted his ill gotten wealth
in front of all, he lived a lavish lifestyle and openly practiced and
supported corruption. And he gave this bible quote to top it all.
What a great a soul he is! Now look at it, has anything changed
since this man was killed? He was killed because of his corrupt
practices, along with the other politicians. For me, nothing has
changed; we Nigerians are still singing the same song that our
fore-fathers sang then. Corruption. Corruption. Not even EFCC or
ICPC could do anything to save the situation. The EFCC and ICPC
are corrupt themselves, so who is fooling who? People recycle
themselves in power, the same set of people who have nothing to
offer anybody. We see them, we know them, we follow them, we
vote them, and we know they dupe us, who cares anyway? When
you weren’t born to die for anybody or Nigeria, so why should
you care? Nigeria can remain as it is, you don’t care, when you
reach there you will also eat your own. So let the corruption,
backwardness, bad name and poor infrastructures keep
recycling itself. Since our fathers said it shall not be well with us,
so shall it be. We have brilliant and hard working doctors, but
yet, when President Jonah wanted to have a medical check up,
he travelled all the way to Germany, with the presidential fleet of
jets and aides. What of IBB? Old as he is, his life is so important
to him that he couldn’t even to go any hospital here that he
watched deteriorate as a president, he also travelled all the way
to Germany. Patience nko? And also the great Dora who could
not be treated here in Nigeria, she had to go to India. What of
education? What of our electricity? What of the basic
infrastructures that we need? Corruption keeps recycling itself. If
you didn’t know corruption will not leave us, well I have to tell
you, now you know! When a president of a country can boldly
say Stealing is not Corruption, then you should know that the
country has been damned forever.

Health / Take Care Of Catarrh by obrien29(m): 2:14pm On Dec 03, 2014
Cattarh is a thick liquid (called PHLEGM) that you have in your
nose, and it is usually caused by cold.
Catarrh, or catarrhal inflammation, is a disorder of
inflammation of the mucous membranes in one of the airways
or cavities of the body. It can result in a thick exudate of
mucus and white blood cells caused by the swelling of the
mucous membranes in the head in response to an infection. It
is a symptom usually associated with the common cold and
chesty coughs , but can also be found in patients with
infections of the adenoids , middle ear, sinus or tonsils. The
phlegm produced by catarrh may either discharge or cause a
blockage which may become chronic.

Catarrh Natural Remedy
You first of all have to take lot of water and fruits; eat
nutricious meals and a lot of fruits. Water helps because it
loosens the mucus and let's it free a closed breath.
You can also mix two spoonful of lime juice with ten tea
spoonful of honey.
Then if your nose is totally blocked, drink and inhale hot water
to loosen the mucus, or buy inhaler.
Dosage: Take a spoonful 3 times daily.

Business / Business Depression And How To Cope With It by obrien29(m): 3:53pm On Nov 26, 2014
Depression is a weakening condition that can make it impossible for you to enjoy your daily existence. If you are plagued with feelings of overwhelming sadness, loneliness, worthlessness, and cannot imagine that things will get any better, then you may be suffering from depression.

Depression is caused by so many problems; it could be health problem, relationship problem, business or even family problem. The most common cause of depression in the world is stress--the stress of life. Most men are depressed everyday, and so are the women. Another cause of depression is relationship problem, which of course is common among the youths and teenagers. Depression can lead to insomnia, loss of appetite, sadness, tiredness. Depression can be so bad that it can lead to suicide or even murder. So, depression has to be managed.

Business depression is the depression that is caused by business related problems, it could be the failure of business or that a business is not moving as planned or that after all the hard work and marketing there is no patronage. See, these are causes of business depression. But I don't see the reason why all these should lead to suicide, because it is not worth it. There are ways one can deal with business depression.

To deal with business depression or any depression at all, you have to seek the help of a doctor or a psychologist. Only them will check you and confirm if you are really depressed. They can also give you medications or tips that can help you cope with depression.

If you can't overcome it by seeing the doctor, then here are other ways to cope with it. You have to have a busy schedule, to keep your mind and body busy and forget about your problems. You have to exercise regularly, the exercise that frees the breath and mind. You have to meet funny guys in your area and hang out with them, I mean the comedian type of people who will crack a lot of jokes and make you laugh; you can also go to stand up comedy shows or buy the comedy videos. Make new plans for yourself and watch as life goes on. Eat nutritous meals and a lot of fruits. Then believe this that FAILURE ONLY DOUBLES YOUR SUCCESS RATE; you only have to start afresh and you will be greater than what you wanted to be.

TV/Movies / The Things In The Indian Film: 3 Idiots. by obrien29(m): 3:56pm On Nov 24, 2014
This great movie was directed by Rajkumar Hirani. It was
written by these talented writers Abhijat Joshi and Rajkumar
Hirani. It is based on Five Point Someone – What not to do at
IIT! by Chetan Bhagat. It was released on the 25th of
December 2009. And it runs for 171 minutes. It was a HUGE
success in the box office.
The film stars Aamir Khan , Kareena Kapoor , R. Madhavan,
Sharman Joshi, Omi Vaidya, Parikshit Sahni and Boman Irani.
3 Idiots went on to become the highest-grossing Bollywood
film.
Box Office India declared the film an "All time Blockbuster",
and it is one of the films on their list of "Biggest Blockbusters
Ever in Hindi Cinema".
The film won 40 accolades; among these are six Filmfare
Awards including best film and best director , ten Star Screen
Awards , sixteen IIFA awards and three National Film Awards .
In January 2014, it was nominated in the Best Outstanding
Foreign Language Film category for 37th Japanese Academy
Awards .
This is a great film with a great storyline; it doesn't only reveal
the loopholes in the education system, it also tries to call our
educationists to their right senses. Don't be disturbed that I am
talking about this movie now; I just watched it recently.
Although the comedy aspect of it is a bit exaggerated and dry,
the movie is still great. The comedy aspect of it is as good as
normal, the lesson and didactic part of it is perfect. If you
haven't watched this great movie, you need to do so! You will
learn a lot. I will give this film 4/5. Everything about the movie
is alright, although unknown actors and actresses were used,
it still came out a BANG; kudos to the whole crew and cast of
this movie of all time.

Sports / Predict Arsenal Vs. Manchester United, 22nd Of November, 2014, And Win Big by obrien29(m): 5:41pm On Nov 20, 2014
These two teams will be meeting again in a hot match in the Emirates stadium on this day. It would be a fight for glory, as these two teams are trying to find their feet in the English Premier League. Arsenal, who are currently sitting at the sixth place in the league table will move to improve their position on the table, and at least regain some lost glory. Manchester United would also move to secure a win and gather three points from the encounter to work on their poor standing for now.
It would be a great match to watch nonetheless. We will watch with alacrity as these two teams who seem to be at the same build this season will meet, and we will also watch out for the coaches, Van Gaal and Arsene Wenger. For sure, Van Gaal, the coach of Manchester United would like to prove his worth as he did against Mourinho, meeting one of the greatest coaches in the Premiership will be a lifetime opportunity. Anyway, it would be an interesting match, with a lot of intrigues.
There are complaints flying around, about the too many injuries in the camp of Manchester United; but it doesn’t really mean anything, as the match will go on. For me, I see the Arsenal coming out on top after losing so many games this season. Sure, Manchester United will be a hard nut to crack, but with the injuries, the nut will crack after sometime. Manchester United will of course fight hard. So, I give it to Arsenal; Arsenal 2, Manchester United 1.

Health / Coping With Menopause by obrien29(m): 5:21pm On Nov 20, 2014
Menopause is the time in a woman's life in which the menstrual cycle ends. It refers to that particular point of cessation of menstruation in women. In medical terms this is called Climacteric. In this health feature and the upcoming health features, we shall deal with all that concerns Menopause, the symptoms, pains, remedy and the sociological effect. You need this, because your mother or grandmother or aunty maybe undergoing this stage in life. It usually happens to women from age 35 to 60; some women it comes early, others it comes later in life.
Symptoms of Menopause
At puberty, eggs start forming inside a girl, and the girl starts menstruating, this means the girl is old enough to become pregnant. Two hormones help the body do this, the oestrogen and the progesterone. It is these hormones that allow the release of the eggs. As of the age of 35, the production of oestrogen begins to decline, which means fewer eggs are released each month. In the coming years, menopause begins. This doesn’t apply to all women, as some women do not see the menopause until they are their late fifties. These are the symptoms of menopause:
1. Irregular Menstruation
The first symptom of menopause is irregular menstruation. As a woman reaches 35 to 40, the woman finds out that her period becomes irregular. The period may come bi-monthly rather than monthly, or it may even come every two weeks. This is actually to remind women that they would not be fertile forever, although the menopause might still be 10 years away.

2. Hot Flashes
You are sleeping peacefully in your bed, and suddenly you wake up sweating and feeling as if your body is on fire, this is hot flashes; it is a symptom of menopause. This can disturb most women, and it can cause insomnia.

3. Aches and Pains
Another symptom is aches and pains all over the body, especially at the body joints. The pains are because of the decreased oestrogen; oestrogen nourishes the body and strengthens the body tissues. With the decline of oestrogen, the tissues become weaker and are prone to infections, especially the female genital track and the breasts.

4. Sensations
At menopause a woman begins to experience some sensations all over the body. Some feel as if ants is crawling up their body, others feel as if sweat is trickling down their head, others feel tingling sensation all over their body; these are all symptoms of menopause if you are a woman within the menopause age range. The declined oestrogen causes this.

5. Vaginal Dryness
Shortage of oestrogen makes the vaginal wall become dry and stiff. The walls become thin and the lubrication disappears. As time goes on, the vagina becomes shorter and narrower like that of a little girl and sexual intercourse becomes very painful.

These are the symptoms of Menopause. If you experience one of these and you are within the age range of the menopause age, you can go see a doctor or a psychologist on how to cope with it. It gives psychological problems and may make the person hate people around her. In the next health feature, we will talk about the psychological effect of Menopause and how we can cope with it.

Music/Radio / Another Big Hit From Davido: Owo Ni Koko by obrien29(m): 5:12pm On Nov 20, 2014
This is one of the greatest songs Davido has released. He released this single two days before his 22nd birthday. The young talented Nigerian has got great things upstairs that keeps bouncing out all the time. Almost all his songs turn out to be great hits; from Omo Baba-olowo to Gobe to Skelewu to Aye, he just doesn’t give up.
Owo Ni Koko, his latest single is as good as his other songs. Good and a peculiar beat, nice lyrics and a great theme. As a Yoruba boy, he used a Yoruba title and peppered the song with his native language. The song talks about how money does so many things, especially winning the heart of a girl; that’s all I could get from the song. I will rate it 3.5/5. Listen to the song and tell me what you feel about the song, and rate it.
It’s not all about the meaning of the song, it’s about the beat and the dance rhythm. LOL. We are Africans; we are not Europeans or Americans. You need to listen to this; it is another big hit from Davido. Download it NOW!!!

Celebrities / Re: Mystery Behind Kim Kardashian's Exposed Butt by obrien29(m): 2:59am On Nov 17, 2014
she is a model, she has a cloth line, she is a philantropist and a humanist... she is talented bro, even if you think she is not, atleast she can create fuss in the media
Celebrities / Mystery Behind Kim Kardashian's Exposed Butt by obrien29(m): 6:14pm On Nov 16, 2014
Kim Kardashian of the Kardashian family, a young talented and beautiful lady married to the rapper Kanye West, just recently exposed her heavy butt to the public. Her butt was naked on the front cover of Paper Magazine for all to see. And a short while before she did that, she had promised to create media attention towards her, and she did that.
So many celebrities, female celebrities expose their body to the public for many reasons. The one which the people have most in their mind is that they want media attention, and they want to create the latest controversy in the media and celeb world. Kim might have her reasons for doing this, but she certainly would not come out to the media to say that.
You have to tell me what you think of this. Damn, she is someone’s wife, someone’s mother, and of course someone’s daughter. Why the hell would she do this? Or you might say there is nothing wrong with that, it’s her life and not yours. Alright, everyone will have his or her own say about this. I read a comment of an American mother who said, “If she does this, teenagers and kids who take her as their role model, what will they learn or think of her?” Well, a child or a teenager who wants to go astray would go astray, celebrities can do nothing; bringing up a child depends on the parents.
Tell me what you think of this her scandalous pose for a magazine cover. Good or bad. Nice or awful. Satanic or deceitful. Her business and not yours? Anything you want to say, the comment box is there for you.
