What is a Goat
When I ask ‘what's a Goat'?, I don't mean the acronym ‘Greatest Of All Time'. No, what I'm asking for is the domestic Goat. If you're a NERD, you can call it by its boring name Capra aegargus hircus. You see, the Goat is the family member of the Bovidae and the Goat- Antelope subfamily Caprinae, meaning that they are kinda related to the Sheep. The Goat is one of the worlds oldest http://www.farmbaze.com/2019/02/25/goat/

Agriculture / Almond And It's Health Benefits by Odinaka10(m): 11:19am On Nov 11, 2018
Almonds have many amazing health benefits including lowering blood pressure and controlling blood sugar and cholesterol levels. They are rich in fat, fiber, magnesium, and vitamin E, and also give relief from heart and brain disorders, constipation, respiratory disorders, coughs, anemia, and impotence. Almonds are also great for hair, skin (psoriasis), and dental care.

What are Almonds?

An almond, despite being classified as a nut by most people, is actually the seed from the fruit of an almond tree. The scientific name of these dry fruits is Prunus dulcis and they are native to the Middle East, India, and North Africa. The almonds that we eat are actually the pits of these fruits, and once they are cracked open, the delicious meat of the nut can be eaten! This partially explains why there are so many nutrients found in these nuts; they are the core nutrients needed for a new plant to grow.

Almonds are now found in places like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, and Israel as well. The taste of almonds ranges from sweet to bitter and both are readily available in markets. Sweet almonds are edible, while bitter ones are used for making oi, a common oil that is used to add flavor to the food.

Can almonds be eaten raw?

You can absolutely eat raw almonds, and you will enjoy all the health benefits of this delicious nut (which is actually a seed). Many people prefer to toast their almonds, however, believing that this brings out a nicer flavor, and releases some of the natural oils. This also makes the nuts slightly crunchier and gives them their signature color. That being said, there is no harm in eating them raw.

Many people also add them as ingredients in salads, casseroles, and other dishes. You can eat almonds directly, preferably on an empty stomach to increase and speed up the absorption of their nutrients. You can also soak them in water overnight so you can eat them the next morning.

How to eat almonds?

Almonds can be consumed in a number of ways, including the following:

Almond milk is a delicious beverage and is an alternative to cow’s milk

Topping off your yogurt or oatmeal with these healthy nuts

Grind them into delicious almond butter, add salt, and bake them to be a replacement for junk food

Include them in your protein or vegetable shakes

Top a salad with these nuts

Crushed almonds are also a wonderful garnish for a number of dishes

Sprinkle them on top of your pizza

Almonds Nutrition

Almond is a highly nutritional nut and according to the USDA Nutrient Database, it is a rich source of fiber, protein, vitamin E, calcium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and iron.

It contains zinc, thiamin, and niacin. It also provides vitamins such as folate, riboflavin, and vitamin B-6. Compared to all other nuts, almonds are richer in nutrients and beneficial components.

-Calories in Almonds: There are 529 calories in a cup of almonds, but we don’t necessarily suggest eating that many in one sitting! That’s about 25% of your suggested calorie intake for the day! However, to put it in simpler terms, there are about 130 calories in one ounce of almonds, which equates to roughly 23 almonds. A healthy dose can help increase your good monounsaturated fat levels, and they contain tons of great minerals too!

-Carbs in Almonds: There are only 5 grams of carbohydrates in a cup of almonds, which represents only 2% of your suggested daily requirement for carbs. Many people see this as a good thing, as low-carb diets are very popular right now. They give people a chance to boost their mineral and fat intake without adding too many empty carbohydrates. This makes them an excellent food to eat on the go or between meals!

-Fats & Proteins in Almonds: A single cup of almonds has approximately 11.5 grams of fat and 5 grams of protein. Almonds contain a high level of fat. However, more than 50% of those fats are in the form of monounsaturated fats, which are good for heart health and are essential for organ function. However, they also contain bad fats, so it is important not to overdo it. A handful or two at a time is a great choice, and will give you a nice boost!

Benefits of Almonds

Almonds have a number of important health benefits, including the ability to protect heart health. They increase circulation, strengthen the bones, protect the skin, aid in digestion, and help control blood sugar levels. They have also been connected to boosting cognitive performance and reducing oxidative stress in the body!

-Antioxidant & Vitamin E Rich

Your body has many components that add to overall health, including the alkalinity of the systems. Almonds are great sources of alkali materials, and this is known to benefit the strength of the immune system, as well as increase the ability to stave off diseases and various health conditions.

Along with almonds’ contribution to alkaline levels, they also have a high content of vitamin E, which is a powerful antioxidant. It seeks out all the damaging free radicals in the body and eliminates them since they promote chronic diseases and can be hazardous to the body’s organs.

Antioxidants like the vitamin E found in almonds affect all major diseases, including cancer and heart diseases. Research has actually shown that people who ingest high levels of vitamin E are actually 30-40% less likely to contract heart diseases.

Another research carried out says that “almonds and almond oil have many properties including anti-inflammatory, immunity-boosting, and anti-hepatotoxicity effects”.

-Almonds prevent heart disease

-Control Blood Sugar Levels

According to research, almonds also help to reduce the reactionary rise in glucose and insulin levels after meals. This modulation offers protection from the dangerous spikes in blood sugar which diabetics often suffer from following a large meal, or a meal with an unexpectedly high level of sugar in it.

They help regulate the absorption and processing of glucose, making the entire process much smoother, and subsequently safer.

-Regulate Blood Pressure

A research conducted by a team of doctors show that the potassium and sodium present in almonds helps regulate blood pressure.

The other nutrients also keep the body balanced in terms of essential needs, which can prevent many deficiencies. Balanced vitamins and minerals are essential for a healthy lifestyle, but if certain elements are neglected, the entire body is affected, resulting in anxiety, stress, and increased blood pressure.

-Regulate Cholesterol Level

Regular consumption of almonds helps to increase the high-density lipoproteins i.e. HDL cholesterol levels and they reduce the low-density lipoproteins i.e. LDL cholesterol levels.

According to a research, “Almonds reduced non‐HDL‐C, LDL‐C, and central adiposity, important risk factors for cardiometabolic dysfunction, while maintaining HDL‐C concentrations“. This balance is vital to a healthy cholesterol level, and a reduction of LDL cholesterol is always a good thing.

-Weight Loss

Unsweetened almond milk can be used if you are attempting to lose weight. The mono-unsaturated fat contained in almonds satisfies the appetite and prevents over-eating. The dietary fiber in almonds also contributes to the sensation of feeling full, despite eating only a small amount.

Studies have revealed that an almond-rich, low-calorie diet is good for obese people to assist in shedding their excess weight.

Studies have also shown that people who regularly consume them (at least twice a week) are far more likely to remain at their ideal weight, rather than those who rarely or never consume almonds and suffer from weight fluctuations.

Finally, the fiber contributes to consistent bowel movements, which helps in weight loss and the general health of the body through the elimination of toxins.

-Prevent Cancer

They improve the movement of food through the colon, thereby preventing build-up and subsequent colon cancer. The National Cancer Center has done extensive research on the link between high-fiber diets and a reduced risk of colon cancer.

A research reveals “the protective effect of peanut, walnut, and almond consumption on the development of breast cancer”. Results from the study said, “almonds significantly reduced the risk for breast cancer by 2-3 times’.

-Prevent Heart Diseases

The mono-unsaturated fats, protein, and potassium contained in almonds are instrumental in protecting the heart health. Vitamin E is an effective antioxidant and also reduces the risk of heart diseases, while the presence of magnesium in them can help avoid heart attacks.

They help reduce the presence and impact of C-reactive proteins (CRP) which causes artery-damaging inflammation. They are also a great source of folic acid. Therefore, they help to reduce the level of homocysteine, which causes fatty plaque buildup in arteries.

Furthermore, the flavonoids in the skin of almonds combine with vitamin E to form a powerful shield against artery wall damage.

-Boost Brain Health

Almonds are a rich source of many nutrients which help in the development and health of the human brain. They have been connected to a higher intellectual level and they have long been considered an essential food item for growing children.

These dry fruits also contain two vital brain nutrients, riboflavin, and L-carnitine, which have been shown to increase brain activity, resulting in new neural pathways and a decreased occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have shown that almond, as well as almond oil, is nutritive to the overall health and functioning of the nervous system.

Many mothers give water-soaked almonds to their children every morning. Two or three seeds are enough, and you can also remove the outer layer if it causes allergic reactions, as the majority of the nutrients are not held in it.

-Improve Bone Health

Almonds are a fantastic source of many vitamins and minerals, and phosphorus is definitely counted among them! Phosphorus can have a considerable impact on the strength and durability of bones and teeth, while also preventing the onset of age-related conditions like osteoporosis.

-Skin Care

The benefits of almonds with regards to skin health are well known, and almond oil massages are often recommended for newborn babies. Almond milk is also added to some soaps, because of their well-established reputation for improving the complexion of skin.

-Reduce Inflammation

Many people think that the word “fat” means something negative, but in fact, certain fatty acids are essential and can be very beneficial for overall health. The body can’t create its own fatty acids, which is why we need to get them from dietary sources.

They have two very important fatty acids, both linoleic and linolenic acids. These fatty acids help reduce inflammation all around the body, which is a general condition that many people suffer from. Fatty acids also help reduce the levels of LDL cholesterol, and they promote healthy skin and hair! All in all, these nuts pack a powerful, healthy punch.

-Boost Energy Production

The presence of manganese, copper, and riboflavin in almonds helps in energy production and metabolic rate. A research done at Purdue University reveals that if you are on the go, a handful of almonds can get you through the day without filling you up with calories or fat.

-Good for Pregnancy

Almonds contain folic acid, which helps reduce the incidence of birth defects in newborn babies. It also stimulates healthy cell growth and tissue formation. Neural tube defects are conditions where the neural tube is either underdeveloped or is partially missing in the fetus.

Doctors regularly prescribe folic acid supplements to pregnant women to ensure proper development of the tube, and they have enough folic acid to keep mothers and their babies healthy.

-Prevent Constipation

According to Medline Plus, almonds are rich in fiber, and like most other fiber-rich foods, almonds help prevent constipation. However, it is also important to drink a significant amount of water when eating almonds to speed up the digestive process and beneficial effects of the nut.

You don’t even need to eat an excessive amount, the amount of fiber in 4 or 5 almonds is enough to keep your digestion and bowel movements regular.
Agriculture / Persimmon(an Uncommon Fruit May Have Not Heard Of) Nutrition Content by Odinaka10(m): 10:46am On Nov 11, 2018
Persimmon fruit is a golden yellow, round or oval, flavorful, smooth textured delicacy of the Far East-Asian origin. Its sweet, delicious flesh is packed with much health promoting nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants vital for optimum health.

Botanically, persimmons belong to the family of Ebenaceae, in the genus: Diospyros. This delicate fruit is native to China. From China, it spread to the Korean peninsula and Japan a very long time ago and later was introduced to California during the middle of the 19th century.

Scientific name: Diospyros virginiana.

Persimmons are either multi-trunked or single-stemmed deciduous trees, which may grow up to 25 ft in height. They grow best in areas where winters are moderate and summers relatively mild.

Persimmon trees classified broadly into two general categories: those that bear "astringent fruit" (while unripe) and those that bear "non-astringent" fruits. An astringent cultivar, which is commonly cultivated in Japan known as “Hachiya,” is high in tannins and must be allowed to ripen completely on the tree itself until it attains jelly-soft consistency before accepted to be fit for consumption. A non-astringent persimmon, on the other hand, contains less tannin and can be eaten while it is crispy, as in apples. Astringency can be removed by treating the fruit with carbon dioxide or alcohol.

During each season, persimmon tree bears many fruits that vary by cultivar from spherical to heart to flatten or squash-like in shape. They also greatly vary in size from as little as a few ounces to more than a pound. The color of the fruit ranges from light yellow-orange to dark orange-red. The entire fruit is edible except for the seed and calyx.

Astringent varieties: Eureka, Hachiya, Saijo, Tamopan, Tanenashi, Triumph, etc.

Non-astringent varieties: Fuyu (Fuyugaki), Gosho/Giant Fuyu/O'Gosho, Imoto, Izu, Jiro, Maekawajiro, Okugosho, Suruga, etc.

Health benefits of persimmon fruit

-Persimmon fruit is moderately high in calories (provides 70 calories/100 g) but very low in fats. Its smooth textured flesh is a very good source of dietary fiber. 100 g of fresh fruit holds 3.6 g or 9.5% of recommended daily intake of soluble and insoluble fiber.

-Persimmons contain health benefiting flavonoid polyphenolic antioxidants such as catechins and gallocatechin in addition to having an important anti-tumor compound, betulinic acid. Catechins found to have anti-infective, anti-inflammatory and anti-hemorrhagic (prevents bleeding from small blood vessels) properties.

-Some of other antioxidant compounds found abundantly in this fruit are vitamin-A, β-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin. Together, these compounds work as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging and various disease processes.

-Zeaxanthin, an important dietary carotenoid, is selectively absorbed into the retinal macula lutea in the eyes where it thought to provide antioxidant and protective light-filtering functions. It, thus, helps prevent "Age-related macular related macular disease"(ARMD) in the elderly.

-Persimmons are also a very good source of vitamin-C, another powerful antioxidant (especially native Chinese and American persimmons; provide 80% of DRI). Regular consumption of foods rich in vitamin-C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals.

-It is good in many valuable B-complex vitamins such as folic acid, pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), thiamin, etc. These vitamins act as co-factors for numerous metabolic enzymatic functions in the body.

-Fresh and dry Persimmon fruits also contain healthy amounts of minerals like potassium, manganese (15% of DRI), copper (12% of DRI), and phosphorus. Manganese is a co-factor for the enzyme, superoxide dismutase, which is a very powerful free radical scavenger. Copper is a co-factor for many vital enzymes, including cytochrome c-oxidase and superoxide dismutase (other minerals function as cofactors for this enzyme are manganese and zinc). Copper also required for the production of red blood cells.

Selection and storage

fresh persimmons in a seol market

Persimmons in a Seoul (South Korea) market.

Astringent variety persimmon fruits generally harvested while they are hard but fully matured. On the otherhand, Non-astringent types can be ready for harvesting when they achieved full-color and slightly soft in consistency.

Astringent persimmons usually continue to ripen at room temperature. Both kinds of persimmons should be gathered from the tree using hand-held pruning shears (as in mango), leaving the calyx intact, unless the fruit is to be used for drying while taking care not to bruise.

In the stores, select fresh fruits featuring bright yellow-orange color without any surface bruises or cuts on them. "Dried persimmons" can also be available readily in the supermarkets and feature many similarities to dried apricots.

Mature, hard, astringent persimmons can be stored in the refrigerator for several months. Non-astringent varieties have short shelf span and can be stored for only a few days at room temperature.

Preparation and serving methods

Persimmons can be consumed fresh, dried, or cooked. Raw fruits can be cut into quarters or eaten wholesome like an apple. Their texture ranges from a firm to mushy and is very sweet.

Here are some serving tips:

Dried persimmon fruits (hoshigaki in Japan) can be used in cookies, cakes, muffins, puddings, salads and as a topping in breakfast cereal.

Persimmon fruit pudding is a popular dessert which uses fresh fruits.

Dried fruits can be enjoyed as snacks or used in desserts. They widely employed to make traditional Korean spicy recipe, sujeonggwa, while a matured, fermented fruit is used to make persimmon vinegar called "gamsikcho"

Agriculture / 8 Reasons To Eat Pineapple by Odinaka10(m): 10:29am On Nov 11, 2018
Pineapple is more than just a delicious tropical fruit. It has significant health benefits. Here are 8 great reasons to eat Hawaii’s native fruit...

The power of pineapple lies in its vitamins and digestibility, its natural sweetness and, of course, its affordability.

Here are some healthful, tasty reasons to stock up on fresh or canned pineapple the next time you’re at the supermarket.

1. Pineapple is Rich in Vitamin C

One cup of pineapple chunks contains more than the minimum daily requirement for vitamin C – 75 mg daily for women and 90 mg for men, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). And vitamin C helps protect against viral infection and inflammation.

So switch up your breakfast routine: Instead of orange juice or grapefruit juice, enjoy the flavor of fresh or canned pineapple to get your daily dose of vitamin C.

2. It’s a Weight-Loss Enhancer

Because it’s inexpensive, easy to prepare and low in calories, pineapple makes a good snack if you want to lose weight. You won’t miss all those high-sugar snacks you used to crave, so you’ll save calories but still feel satisfied for longer. That won’t happen with candy and chips.

Good pairings include pineapple chunks with walnuts, low-fat whipped cream or a rice dish. The fruit helps manage food cravings by delivering sweetness while keeping blood sugar levels even because of its high fiber content.

High-fiber foods help you eat less because they keep you feeling fuller longer. They also improve blood glucose control, according to the Joslin Diabetes Center at Harvard Medical School.

Pineapple is 94% carbohydrate, so keep that in mind if you’re on a low-carb diet.

3. Pineapple Helps Digestion and Reduces Inflammation

Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that studies show can reduce the inflammation and swelling that occurs in conditions, such as sinusitis, sore throat and arthritis flare-ups, according to the NIH.

Pineapple also is recommended for indigestion. Bromelain “may help relieve the inflammation associated with ulcerative colitis,” according to a 2012 Chinese study published in the Saudi Journal of Gastroenterology.

If you’re dealing with an infection or injury, bromelain can help reduce swelling, bruising, healing time and pain after injuries and surgery.

4. It Boosts Eyesight

Carrots do help keep your eyes bright and healthy, but new research suggests that fruit is even more important for eye health. (Here is a list of foods that help maintain eyesight.)

Eating three or more servings of fruit a day may lower the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by as much as 36%, according to a study in Archives of Ophthalmology.

AMD is the leading cause of vision loss in older adults, afflicting more than 1.8 million Americans over 40, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports.

Adding more pineapple to your diet will give you more of the antioxidants you need to slow the development of this sight-robbing condition.

5. It Helps Keep Your Bones Healthy

Along with calcium, the trace mineral manganese is essential for maintaining strong bones and healthy connective tissues, the NIH advises. A single cup of pineapple contains about 76% of the recommended daily value of manganese.

Manganese helps stave off osteoporosis and ease symptoms of the bone disease by helping to improve overall bone and mineral density, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Plenty of other tropical fruits are also high in manganese – including raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and bananas. So pair pineapple with any or all of these fruits for a delicious salad packed with manganese and other essential vitamins and minerals that will benefit your bones.

6. Pineapple is Affordable, Convenient and Easy-to-Serve

Unlike expensive imports or seasonal fruits, fresh, frozen and canned pineapple is available year-round in most American markets.

Besides fresh and frozen varieties, canned pineapple comes in small- and medium-size cans or jars that are just right for snacking – or adding to a fruit salad.

The crushed variety comes ready to pour over your favorite salad or on low-fat cottage cheese.

Pineapple is available in light or heavy syrup; choose the fruit packed in its own juice for a healthier alternative.

7. Kids Love It

Pineapple chunks or rings are finger foods, making them easy to eat, as well as sweet and simple to serve to kids, pack in school lunches or as an after-school treat.

Unlike apples and oranges that have to be peeled, a pop-open can of pineapple is ready whenever kids ask for a snack.

Try storing pineapple chunks and rings in plastic baggies for ready access.

8. Pineapple Recipes Are Easy to Find

You can get the health benefits of pineapples more often by adding the flavorful fruit to a variety of foods you already eat and trying it in new recipes.

For instance, pineapple makes a great addition to recipes for pork and salads, and it goes well with many other meats and vegetables too. For example, use toothpicks to skewer pineapple chunks soaked in brown sugar and their own juice to a holiday ham.

Or try the fruit cooked on top of a pork roast, or add it to applesauce for a tropical flavor and texture. Canned pineapple can be added to a tofu stir fry too.

Crushed pineapple works well in sauces and on sundaes. And try these delicious recipes for Pineapple Coffee Cake and Pineapple-Coconut Sorbet.

1. Ginger
Ginger is one of the most traded spices in the world which Nigeria happens to be among the largest producers. Why we are not exporting ginger in large quantity is beyond me. You can start a Trans-Sahara or Trans-Atlantic trade with this goods and be making dollars on regular basis. Garlic is also on top of the list of items you can export from Nigeria.

2. Palm Kernel Oil
Palm Kernel oil is the oil extracted from the pulp of palm fruit which is different from palm oil. Palm kernel oil is used for the manufacturing of various cosmetics, pharmaceutical products and confectioneries. The uses of this oil is broad and the mineral contents are said to be rich in protein for various uses. Nigeria has it in quantum and makes dollars exporting it to other countries of the world.

3. Textiles and Garments
This industry alone generates close to $32bn as revenue from export from Nigeria. It is also a fact that unlike other products that battles with high strict rules of tests, Nigeria’s textiles enjoy duty free passage into United States where it has the largest market in the world because of its unique designs, ethnic African designs and quality.

4. Cocoa Butter
This is the real sources of chocolates of all types. The fruits of Cocoa is used for the production of various skin care products, health products, and pharmaceutical products. The demand for Cocoa is very high in both America and UK and that is why cocoa farming is very essential in Nigeria.

5. Gallstone
This is a clay-like solid substance gotten from the gallbladder of matured cow and oxen. The size could be as big as chicken egg. Gallstone is a hotcake for foreign pharmaceuticals because they use it for medical purposes. If you could lay your hand a good quantity of well dried gallstone about 100g that is well packaged, ready buyers are waiting for it in either Asia or America.

6. Rubber
Nigeria has put in place proper Central Testing Laboratories to ensure that only certified products leave the country to Europe and America. Nigeria happens to be a significant producer of Rubber in Africa. A cubit meter of fine quality rubber goes for between $400 and $600 presently because of the instability of dollar rate in the market.

7. Sesame Seed
This may sound a bit strange if you are not from the area where it is produced in the country. Sesame seed can be found in quantity in places like Benue and Jigawa states in Nigeria. This product ranks second to cocoa in terms of export volume and foreign exchange earnings. Nigeria is the 5th largest producer of this commodity and shipping it into foreign countries brings dollars exchange.

8. Honey
Pure honey is another export commodity from Nigeria to other countries. Presently, a kilogram of honey costs above $150 in the international markets. Pure natural honey contains trace enzymes as sugar, mineral, vitamins and amino acids. A litre of honey can fetch good dollars in the foreign market.

9. Shrimps
The Niger Delta region in Nigeria is blessed with rich organic deposits of Shrimps. The demands for Shrimps is high in countries like Portugal, France, Belgium, Spain, and USA.

10. Garlic
Garlic is a cash crop which is grown under irrigation by farmers in the Savanna areas in Nigeria. With internationally certified good quantities of garlic, you are sure of foreign hard currencies.

11. Yam Tubers
Nigeria is presently the highest producers of yam. In 2009 alone, yam export accounted for about US$450 million exchange. But due to low quality, it is saddening to know that the country is not maximizing its export potentials of this products. So there is need for prospective exporters of yam to foreign countries to adhere to quality regulations that is guarding the process. Yam farmers must take this into consideration and tap from this opportunity.

12. Charcoal
This is at the fore front in the international market. This product which is produced in good quantity in Nigeria with now perfected technology, has about 50% ROI.Even an individual can own a charcoal production outfit and have exporters shipping it for him. A large market for charcoal exists in ASIA, EU, and USA. A tone of this product goes for about $1000.

13. Cotton
This sector recently received a boost from the National Cotton Association of Nigeria (NACOTAN) of N33 million to rehabilitate it. Cotton is the most natural sources of fiber and it is in demand internationally.

14. Cassava Flour
We already know that Cassava is food for all in Nigeria because of various methods of preparing it. There is need for this in the foreign markets as well. The demand for well processed cassava flour is increasing both in Europe, Middle East and in America.

15. Cashew Nuts
Almost every part of the country has the potential to produce this international commodity. Great quantity of unprocessed raw cashew nuts are exported to India, Brazil and Vietnam where they are processed into kernels and moved to the Northern America and Europe where they are sold for about $2 per pound. The demand is on the increase from these consuming countries.

16. Snail
If you can produce snails in good quantity, there is a ready market for you. Snails are hotcake in European and America. The good thing about this is that it is very easy to rear as it produces rapidly with close to nothing in expenditure for feeding.

17. Chili Pepper
Nigeria is blessed with good weather which supports the proper growths and production of the internationally accepted pepper. If you can grow and source for the export opportunity, you are sure to get it.

18. Fruit Juice
It may sound somewhat strange to many that Nigeria provide export opportunity for fruit juice concentrates. Yes, we have it because Nigeria can boast of so many naturally grown fruits all over the country which provides the best of fruit juice products of great quality. The opportunity for Nigerian fruits concentrate export is huge in USA.

19. Poultry
Forget about the facts that some greedy Nigerians go about smuggling chicken into the country. When we talk about poultry, it involves all domestic birds, egg or meat.

Nigeria poultry farm products are still highly needed both within Africa and Western countries because Nigerian weather conditions for poultry farming still remains the best. Poultry products export from Nigeria is an avenue that is still highly untapped.

Agriculture / Palm Oil by Odinaka10(m): 7:44pm On Sep 08, 2018
Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil derived from the mesocarp (reddish pulp) of the fruit of the oil palms, primarily the African oil palm Elaeis guineensis,[1] and to a lesser extent from the American oil palm Elaeis oleifera and the maripa palm Attalea maripa.

Palm oil is naturally reddish in color because of a high beta-carotene content. It is not to be confused with palm kernel oil derived from the kernel of the same fruit[2] or coconut oilderived from the kernel of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). The differences are in color (raw palm kernel oil lacks carotenoids and is not red), and in saturated fat content: palm mesocarp oil is 49 percent saturated, while palm kernel oil and coconut oil are 81 percent and 86 percent saturated fats, respectively. However, crude red palm oil that has been refined, bleached and deodorized, a common commodity called RBD palm oil, does not contain carotenoids.[3]

The oil palm produces bunches containing a large number of fruits with the fleshy mesocarp enclosing a kernel that is covered by a very hard shell. FAO considers palm oil (coming from the pulp) and palm kernels to be primary products. The oil extraction rate from a bunch varies from 17 to 27% for palm oil, and from 4 to 10% for palm kernels[4].

Along with coconut oil, palm oil is one of the few highly saturated vegetable fats and is semisolid at room temperature.[5] Palm oil is a common cooking ingredient in the tropical belt of Africa, Southeast Asia and parts of Brazil. Its use in the commercial food industry in other parts of the world is widespread because of its lower cost[6] and the high oxidative stability (saturation) of the refined product when used for frying.[7][8] One source reported that humans consumed an average 17 pounds (7.7 kg) of palm oil per person in 2015.[9]

The use of palm oil in food products has attracted the concern of environmental activist groups; the high oil yield of the trees has encouraged wider cultivation, leading to the clearing of forests in parts of Indonesia and Malaysia to make space for oil-palm monoculture.[10] This has resulted in significant acreage losses of the natural habitat of the three surviving species of orangutan. One species in particular, the Sumatran orangutan, has been listed as critically endangered.[11] In 2004, an industry group called the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil was formed to work with the palm oil industry to address these concerns.[12]Additionally, in 1992, in response to concerns about deforestation, the Government of Malaysia pledged to limit the expansion of palm oil plantations by retaining a minimum of half the nation's land as forest cover.[13][14]In March 2017, a documentary made by Deutsche Welle revealed that palm oil is used to make milk substitutes to feed calves in dairies in the German alps. These milk substitutes contain 30 percent milk powder and the remainder of raw protein made from skimmed milk powder, whey powder, and vegetable fats, mostly coconut oil and palm oil.[15]

Business / Nigeria Spends $2bn Annually On Honey Importation by Odinaka10(m): 7:34pm On Sep 08, 2018
Nigeria spends over $2bn annually on the importation of honey, the Federal Government has said.

According to a report put together by officials of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Nigerian Export Promotion Council and apiculture (beekeeping) experts, Nigeria consumes about 400,000 tonnes of honey annually but produces less than 10 per cent of its total consumption.

The report, which is contained in the concept note for the ApiExpo Africa 2018 coming up in Abuja this month, was made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday.

It stated that as the Nigerian population grew, heavier demand on food resource had compelled agricultural methods to improve technologically in order to meet the national consumption requirements.

It said beekeeping was not an exception, adding that there was the compelling need for beekeepers to imbibe global standards in order to grow the subsector and integrate the benefits into mainstream agricultural development.

It said, “Currently, Nigeria consumes about 400,000 tonnes of honey annually, produces less than 40,000 tonnes (10 per cent of the consumption) which by implication translates to an import bill of over $2bn annually.

“Low yields from local farmers due to primitive methods of farming means that national food production is less than national food consumption, which by implication swells the national import bill by staggering figures to billions of dollars.”

The government, however, stated that it had commenced moves aimed at reducing the amount spent on the importation of honey into Nigeria.

It said the implementation of the Apiculture Road map, under the Agricultural Promotion Policy, aimed at transforming the country to one of the top players in the global apiculture sphere.

“To this end, government has established the Nigerian Apiculture Platform with the objective of fostering the development of the sector while supporting the beekeepers and processors with the necessary inputs, required policies and legislation to drive the developmental processes for the industry,” the report stated.

The Team Lead, ApiExpo Africa, Chinyere Akujobi, stated that the objective of the forthcoming expo was to clearly articulate the importance of the event to national economic growth and provide justification for a comprehensive support by the Federal Government for agriculture-related activity.

Agriculture / Local Way Of Harvesting And Processing Honey by Odinaka10(m): 7:12pm On Sep 08, 2018
Owning a beehive maybe little or no difficult task, but the process of harvesting is usually a more difficult task to carry out in local method.

We are going to be exposing you on how to locally harvest and process honey.

Note:this method does not require any modernized tool.

Also Note:protectives must be worn, and every harvesting and Processing should be done at night, within the hours of 10-11pm. Why is this so?

It is like this because the bees must have been stressed out and weak by that time due to the days work. This makes the attack by the bees less on the honey harvester. Also, by this time, it must have been dark, thereby not allowing the bees to see the harvester.

STEP1:As a good beekeeper, before any action is taken on the beehive, the harvester must have prepared the necessary tools needed to carry out this task. The tools that are usually needed for this task are:

-Dry Bamboo stick or Dry palm fronds:This is used to set up fire which will be used to attack the bees(note that a lot of bees will die in this process).

-Hand Glove:As a preventive equipment, it protects the hand from bee sting.

-Bucket:it is used to put the bee comb filled with honey

STEP2:After the first step, the next thing to do is to go to the beehive with those tools, including the dry bamboo stick or dry palm fronds. In a situation where by the harvester wants to make use of a bamboo stick, one end of the stick should be flogged against the wall or something hard, in other to make that end scatter(Note that this method helps the fire to burn easily)

On reaching the beehive, the harvester should quickly set up fire on one end of the palm fronds or bamboo stick(scattered end) and hold the other end, then unseal the beehive with the free hand.

Note: At this point, the bees will start coming out for war, so the harvester must be fast. When the beehive must have been opened, the bee comb should be cut out with a knife and kept inside the bucket. When this is done, the beehive should be closed, and the fire quench so that the bees will not locate the harvester and then he(the person doing the harvest) should move away quickly with the bucket of honey comb filled with honey.

STEP3:After the 2nd process is done, the next thing to do is to prepare the tools that will enable the 3rd step to be accomplished. These tools includes:

-A sieve

-Another bucket

-A tray

-Jars

After the bring out these tools, the next thing is to start work.

The first thing to do under this step is to take the bee comb little by little and squeeze out the honey with his hand into an empty bucket(this is why it is a local method). Make sure the hand glove is worn while doing this(it is more hygienic).

Any comb that has been squeezed should be put in a tray for either disposal or re-baiting of an empty beehive. After the squeezing, the next thing is to sieve the honey in other to remove the little particles of the comb. After all, the honey should be well as packaged in the jars for consumption or marketing.

Phones / How To Make The Best In Your Poultry Farm by Odinaka10(m): 1:38am On Jun 12, 2018
when we talk about a poultry farm, what do we mean?
A poultry farm is a place where domesticated birds such as chickens, ducks, turkies and geese are raised, for the purpose of meat or eggs for food.
many people today in and outside Nigeria wants to start up a poultry farm but dont knw the steps to take in to make the best, while most people who have started are complaining of low production.I will not be mistaken if I say that those problems have come to an end.All you have to do is to read carefully,as we will be talking of making the best production in your poultry farm.
There are many tips in succeeding in this area, and we will talk about them respectively.
When starting up a poultry farm, the first thing to be done is:

(1).Make sure the poultry site is neat:
Many of our poultry farmers today no-longer check on the environment where the birds are been raised, that is why many of us record loss in our poultry farm, due to disease infestation. As a good poultry farmer, there are things to be done on the floor of the the poultry farm before bringing the birds in.These include:
-Washing the place:The poultry environment should be washed thoroughly with enough disinfectant, detergent and warm water, after which you rinse the place thoroughly with enough water and allow the place to dry properly.

(2).Make sure there is no threat in or around the place:
Another major problem that most of our poultry farmers face is threat.Threat is one thing that will never give a human being rest, not to talk of the birds that dont even have up to quarter percent of human strength.A good poultry farmer will make sure that there is no threat in or around the place where the birds stay.
Now,when we talk about threat what do we mean?
A threat in this case is something that has an expression of intent to injure or even harm the birds in some cases. Some of the threat we have in regards to poultry includes:pussy cat, snake, dog, soldier ants,e.t.c.Once these threat must have been dealt with and conquered, there will be improvement in the poultry farm.

(3).Let there be cross-ventilation to enable air and adequate illumination:
In a place where there is no cross-ventilation,the place tends to be unconducive for living things because there will be lack of light and air. While setting up a poultry, there should be ventilation,in other to make the temperature of the place conducive, most especially for birds within the age of one month and above. But in the case of birds less than one month old,the ventilation should not be too open. While raising birds of less than one month old,the temperature of the room should be warm, since there is no mother to cover them with her wings and make them feel warm.If proper care is not given to the at this stage in their lives, there are possibilities that they will die of cold.Outside the young ones, there should be proper ventilation.

(4).Make sure there is artificial illumination(bulb light) at night:
Birds are kind of creatures that eat at any point in time, whether in the day or at night, provided there is light to enable them see.No buyer will ever go to the market to buy a poultry bird and go for one that is not healthy or weighty. Therefore,it is necessary for the birds to be provided with artificial light at night.Light can be in form of lamp or electricity bulb, but i will advice that a poultry farmer should go for the electricity light, which will make them see very well.
At this point, the birds can now be brought in before the other things follow.

(5).Feed them always,even at night:
As I earlier said, these birds eat at any point in time.So avoid their feeding trough from being empty at any given time.Feeding them at all times seriously adds to their growth.

(6).Treat them every month:
Proper treatment should be given to the birds at intervals(every month),in other to promote good health and reduce disease infection. At this point, the birds should be watched closely to see if the drugs/drug is having any adverse effect on them.

(7).Let the sick birds be isolated:
Every sick bird should be isolated,in other to avoid spread of disease.Special attention should be given to the sick ones to enable fast recovery and also to avoid too much loss of weight because the longer the sickness, the more weight they lose(the healthy ones ones should also be monitored).

(cool.Clean the place from time to time:
Cleaning of the poultry farm should not only be done when the birds are about coming in. This should be a regular exercise that will help avoid diseases among the birds. This exercise should be done atleast once in a week(this includes changing of saw(for those that make use of it),but avoid doing it in a way that it will now be a form of disturbance to the birds.

(9).Wash the feeding trough and drinker always:
The feeder and the drinker should be washed always before putting fresh water or food for them because the birds usually defecate on the feeder or drinker, which enables diseases if not properly washed.

(10).Always consult your avian veterinarian:
Who is an avian veterinarian?
This is one who specializes in treating birds. While owning a poultry farm, you should make an avian veterinarian your friend,so you can easily call upon the person for regular checkup on your birds.

SO WHAT NEXT?
After all these, all you have to do is to expect the best in your poultry farm(Dont FORGET to always call upon your GOD).

ISN'T THIS STRESSFUL?
Yes,it is.This stress is what makes you a good farmer.
