Politics › Labor: Ugwuanyi's Administration First To Pay Minimum Wage Without Rancour by OEPHIUS(op): 5:29pm On Feb 25, 2020 |
…March on streets to Government House
*Say gov is the first to pay them new wage without crisis
There was jubilation in Enugu State, Tuesday, as civil servants marched through the streets of Enugu to the Government House, to thank Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for being the first governor of the state, since the inception of democracy in 1999, to pay them the minimum wage without rancour.
The jubilant workers, who were led by the leadership of the Organized Labour in the state, comprising the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Virginus Nwobodo, his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Comrade Benneth Asogwa and Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, Comrade Igbokwe Chukwuma Igbokwe, among others, marched from the State Secretariat in GRA, through Garden Avenue, Ogui road and Bisala down to the Government House at Independence Layout. It was such an emotional event as the workers sang solidarity songs while also thanking Gov. Ugwuanyi for paying them the agreed new minimum wage, during the weekend.
They displayed banners and placards with inscriptions such as: “Enugu State workers say Thank You His Excellency for the new minimum wage”, “Gburus, Enugu workers say Thank You for regular payment of salaries”, “Gburus, thank you for giving us new minimum wage without stress”, “Thank you for regular payment of monthly pensions”, “Gburus, you are a pacesetter”, Gburus is our man”.
Speaking at the Government House, Enugu, the State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Nwobodo, told Gov. Ugwuanyi that “Enugu workers are very happy and delighted that this is the first time since the inception of democracy in 1999 that a governor in Enugu State paid us a new minimum wage without any crisis, stress or industrial action”.
Comrade Nwobodo disclosed that the workers were surprised and elated to receive their salary alerts during the weekend reflecting the new minimum wage in line with the agreed consequential adjustment chart.
“Today is a special day in the history of Enugu State”, the labour leader noted “because there is no worker in Enugu State that did not benefit from Ugwuanyi’s alert, and that is why we are singing now”.
In his speech, the State Chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria, Comrade Asogwa, narrated Gov. Ugwuanyi’s numerous interventions towards the welfare of the state workers, such as the 100 units of one-bedroom flats for civil servants between grade levels 01-10, regular payment of salaries and pensions and the payment of 13th month salary.
“It’s instructive that Gov. Ugwuanyi was recording such feats at a time when many states could not pay their workers’ salaries”, says Asogwa. According to the union leader, the process through which the winners of the houses emerged was “the greatest transparency we have ever seen in the history of leadership”.
The TUC chairman maintained that the state workers marched to the Government House to let the world know that “it is because you have been able to turn the history positively as far as minimum wage is concerned in Enugu State”.
According to him, “we want to also tell them that what we are doing today is significant because in the past, whenever minimum wage was being expected, it was always negative. Then, we would mourn from, maybe, New Haven to our Secretariat crying and shouting. Then, you would see all Enugu in pains. But today, we have come to Government House, smiling”.
Comrade Asogwa, who maintained that this was the first time the workers had a salary chart that was a product of collective bargaining, told Gov. Ugwuanyi that “the greatest political party you have identified with is the public service and you are a full registered member and we can tell you that you have our mandate, anytime.”
His words: “Your Excellency, I want to summarize by saying that history will never forget your regime. We stand here to say that in Enugu State, we have worked for years without salary chart until somebody called Dr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi a.k.a Gburugburu came and the dignity of workers was restored. We stand here today to say, Your Excellency, we are very grateful.”
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, Comrade Igbokwe, endorsed the expressions made by his fellow labour leaders, adding that “what is happening here today is the first in this country as far as the implementation of minimum wage is concerned”.
Comrade Igbokwe, who joined other labour leaders and the State Head of Service, Mr. Chidi Ezema in presenting a Thank You card to the governor on behalf of the state workers, revealed that “the joy in the hearts of the workers today is overwhelming”.
Responding, Gov. Ugwuanyi thanked the state workers for their support, solidarity and appreciation in respect of the implementation of the new minimum wage in the state. The governor stated that the mandate of his administration is to serve the people with the fear of God, and reiterated his firm belief that “a worker deserves his wage”. He also appreciated the labour unions for the discipline and maturity they displayed in their engagement during the processes that led to the implementation of the new minimum wage.
“You will recall that in my inaugural address, I said that we will deploy government services to create fair and equal opportunity for every willing citizen to make a living and create wealth, educate our children, and enjoy life in a peaceful and secure environment. We remain committed to this.”

*Govt directs owners of public buildings to install CCTV cameras within six months
The administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, has approved intervention funds for infrastructural development in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka and Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu.
The approvals, according to the Commissioner for Information, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, who briefed newsmen after the meeting of the State Executive Council (EXCO), were in continuation of the efforts of the state government to advance development and increase the level of partnership with private and faith-based organizations, towards enhancing good governance in the state.
Consequently, Aroh stated that the council approved the immediate release of the sum N150 million to Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, for upgrade of facilities in the hospital, which is a major health service centre in Nsukka zone.
The information commissioner pointed out that the upgrade of facilities at Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, which is a faith-based organization, will go a long way to complement the health services of state government’s hospitals in providing quality healthcare to the people of the state.
Aroh added that the council approved the release of additional N100 million to Uzo-Uwani LGA, for further intervention along Nkpologu-Uvuru-Ukpatu-Adaba- Umuluokpa road, particularly the section that urgently requires erosion control work and embankment.
He recalled that prior to the inception of Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration, people from 13 out of 16 electoral wards in Uzo-Uwani could not access their council headquarters, Umulokpa, unless they go through Anambra State or Nsukka-9th Mile-Ezeagu LGA, disclosing that “through the intervention of this administration, the road is accessible and the people of the area can now go to their headquarters with ease”.
The commissioner further added that the council also approved the release of N24 million to Uzo-Uwani LGA for overhaul of the medical centre at Umulokpa, which was built during the military era, to enhance healthcare services to the people of the council.
The council equally approved the release of the sum of N100 million to Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, for the completion of the access road to its permanent site at Ugwuomu Nike, Enugu East LGA. This, according to the information commissioner, is in addition to the sum of N500 million earlier approved and released to the university by Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration for the construction of the said road.
On security, Aroh revealed that Gov. Ugwuanyi, at the EXCO meeting, signed the Enugu State Security Trust Fund bill recently passed by the State Assembly into Law, “to strengthen our commitment to provide security in the state and ensure there is private sector participation, in a transparent mode”.
It would be recalled that when the governor unveiled to journalists, the security vehicles his administration procured, he disclosed that the state government would engage the State Assembly and partner Ndi Enugu, home and abroad, to set up a Security Trust Fund that will ensure efficient security operations in the state.
The information commissioner explained that following the signing of the Security Trust Fund bill into law, a management team would be established to manage the funds that will come from development partners and private sectors for the enhancement of security in the state.
Aroh stated that the council has directed all owners of public buildings in the state to install CCTV cameras within six months to further enhance the security architecture of the state. He further stated that the state government, in a bid to stop multiple taxation, has approved a harmonized schedule of fees particularly to private schools in the state, reducing the charges from thirty two (32) to eight ( . The council went further to ban the collection of fees outside the registration fee in crèches where children under the age of three are looked after.
Also approved by the council was the immediate purchase of water treatment chemicals by the Enugu State Water Corporation for proper treatment of water at Ajali and Oji River water schemes for the wellbeing of the consumers. Approvals were equally given for forwarding of a bill to the State Assembly for the provision of Water and Sanitization Law of Enugu State and the immediate recruitment of twenty (20) Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) to enhance the work of the Vehicle Inspection Unit, under the State Ministry of Transport.

Politics › Security: South East Governors Endorse NPF Community Policing Model by OEPHIUS(op): 7:57pm On Feb 12, 2020 |
Governors of the South East Geo-political zone, on Wednesday, endorsed the new community policing model of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), for effective security in the zone.
Rising from the South East Geo-political Security Summit, initiated by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Mohammed Adamu Abubakar, the governors in a communiqué read by the Governor of Ebonyi State and Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum, Engr. David Umahi, said that contents of the new community policing strategies of the police were not different from their security measures already in place in the zone.
Gov. Umahi disclosed that South East Governors, before the summit, had a closed-door meeting with the Inspector General of Police, at the Government House, Enugu, where the police chief explained to them extensively the concept and effectiveness of the community policing in addressing security challenges in the zone.
Other governors at the event include the host governor, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and the governor of Imo State, represented by his deputy, Prof. Placid Njoku.
Speaking further, Gov. Umahi added that all security concerns raised by the traditional and religious leaders in the South East zone, including those presented by the Imeobi of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, at the last meeting of the South East Governors’ Forum, have been addressed in the community policing strategy of the Nigeria Police Force.
The governor who maintained that the people of the zone will begin to see a lot of positive changes as fallout of the summit, pointed out the governors have agreed to invest in social intervention programmes for teeming youths.
According to him, “The community policing was proper and explained to us in full details and it is not different from our Neighbourhood Watch and the Vigilante operation, the Forest Guard, the gate keepers, the herdsmen and farmers conflict committees and others.
“And so we saw that this is totally in tandem with what we pray. We decided as your governors to embrace this initiative of community policing, which is an official endorsement in line with what the police and what we are doing to safeguard the lives and property of our people”.
In his address, IGP Adamu Abubakar, who described the South East summit as the best in the country, noted that the event was “convened within the framework of our community policing initiative and as part of the strategies of Nigerian Police to employ all inclusive strategy towards helping us in the achievement of our internal security management, particularly in the South Eastern states”.
The IGP disclosed that the community policing approach was necessitated by the increasing complexity of crime and the challenges of policing the vast and diverse country such as Nigeria, stressing that “this requires that the Nigerian police should continually engage the citizens in seeking their input and soliciting their support”.
He appreciated the governors of the South East, the traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders across the states of the zone for their active participation in the event which he said was “the 6th and the best of the security summits” across the six geo-political zones of the country.
“All the summits ended in a very successful outcome and I am delighted to confirm that the strategies jointly developed as well as the partnership we built at the meetings that were so far held, have been effective in addressing the security tricks that are peculiar to each of the geo-political zones."
Earlier in his address, Gov. Ugwuanyi who welcomed the Inspector General of Police to Enugu State, on behalf of his colleagues, expressed optimism that the summit’s outcome will facilitate rejigging and re-tooling of the security architecture in the South East Geo-political zone and bring it up to speed with emerging dimensions of insecurity and criminality.
While noting that the summit was “both timely and most compelling”, Gov. Ugwuanyi congratulated the Inspector General of Police and his team for the great initiative, maintaining that his administration has not rested on its oars in providing a safe and secure environment for residents to live, work and enjoy their leisure.
According to him, “We have strengthened our Neighbourhood Watch Associations, blazed the trail in enthronement of Forest Guards which is a novel initiative of the South East Governors Forum and have continued to support the security agencies in our state with security patrol vehicles, communication gadgets, etc.
“We have institutionalized the needed collaboration between our Neighbourhood Watch groups, Forest Guards and security agencies especially in the area of intelligence sharing. Enugu State Security Trust Fund law is in place to ensure sustainable support for security agencies in the state while the State Forest Guards law is before our State House of Assembly.
“We are also on the threshold of deploying our Automated Drone Surveillance Solution to give the needed impetus to our security surveillance.
Gov. Ugwuanyi who stressed his administration’s commitment to security and welfare of the people as enshrined in the country’s constitution, expressed hope that the outcome of the interactions will chart the course for improved security of the South East zone “as a significant co-factor in our economic development”.
Other speakers at the event were the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prof. Njoku, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, Archbishop Emmanuel Chukwuma, Chairman of Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRH Igwe Amb. Politics › Amotekun: South East Governors To Create Regional Security Outfit by OEPHIUS(op): 9:45pm On Feb 09, 2020 |
…Commend Buhari, Ugwuanyi, others, on Enugu airport rehabilitation
Governors of Nigeria’s South-east states have resolved to ensure the creation of laws to establish a regional security outfit.
The governors’ stance comes weeks after South-west governors met with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo where they agreed to pass similar laws to back up the South-west security outfit, Amotekun.
The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, had earlier declared Amotekun illegal, saying the constitution only allowed a unitary police structure to be controlled by the federal government.
To resolve the impasse, the South-west governors met with Mr Malami and Mr Osinbajo where it was agreed that the South-west state assemblies should pass laws to legalise the already launched Amotekun.
In their meeting on Sunday, South-east governors resolved to have their state assemblies pass laws to establish their own security outfit.
Details of the discussion of the South-east governors were sent to PREMIUM TIMES by the spokesperson to the Enugu State governor.
Read the full statement below.
The governors of the South East geo-political zone rose from a closed-door meeting at the Government House, Enugu, disclosing their plan to forward a bill to South East State Houses of Assembly to enact a law to back-up the South East Regional Security Programme.
Briefing newsmen after meeting which lasted over five hours, the Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi, stated that the arrangement with the States Houses of Assembly will arrive at a name for the regional security outfit.
Engr. Umahi, who maintained that the South East Governors had earlier formed their joint regional security on July 28, 2019 and consequently inaugurated the committee on August 31, added that the Forum had written the Federal Government concerning the security outfit.
According to him, “at an appropriate time we shall be inviting the Federal Government to note the details of our Joint Security Programme”.
The governors assured the people of the South East zone that “we have our State Vigilante and the Forest Guards in all the South East States, who work with the security agencies daily in our various communities for protection of lives and property”.
They reassured the people that “the protection of their lives and property is paramount to us and we are committed to just doing that”.
On ongoing rehabilitation of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, the South East governors, while noting the quality and speed of work by the contractor, PW Nig. Ltd, expressed satisfaction with the progress so far made and assurances of integrated safety and landing facilities, fencing and drainage system incorporated in the package.
The Forum, therefore, “commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his prompt response in full release of special funding for the project”.
The Forum also commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State “for making more land available and his commitment in the overall success of the project”, as well as the Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika and the Works Committee Chairman on the project, Sir. Engr. Chris Okoye and his team, for their commitment and constant supervision and monitoring of the project.
The governors assured the people that President Buhari, the Aviation Minister, the President’s Chief of Staff and all other stakeholders are committed to the re-opening of the Enugu airport by March 31, 2020, saying: “All inconveniences are regretted”.
The Forum equally applauded the federal government on the speedy and quality work on the ongoing Enugu-Port Harcourt federal highway, with reservations on a number of sections yet to be attended to, “especially the Abia-PH axis being handled by a Chinese Company”.
According to the Forum, “Our findings show that they are not yet properly funded, as to effect reasonable work before the rainy season. While thanking Mr. President and the Hon. Minister of Works for this road, we appeal that all the companies be fairly funded so as to attend to most of the deplorable sections before the rainy season.”
On the 2nd Niger Bridge, after a brief on the progress of work from the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, represented by his deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke, the Forum and other stakeholders who were present at the meeting commended President Buhari, the works minister, the President’s Chief of Staff and the Managing Director of National Social Insurance Authority (NSIA), Mr. Uche Orji, for making the all-important project a reality.
“With the level of funding by Mr. President, we are confident that this project shall be completed in his tenure”, the Forum declared.
They thanked members of Imeobi Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo for visiting them during the meeting, assuring them that their useful advice was noted with a pledge to work with them for the benefit of the people of the zone https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/376525-amotekun-south-east-governors-propose-law-to-create-own-regional-security-outfit.html

Politics › Enugu Govt Is Not Building Islamic Centre - Archbishop Chukwuma by OEPHIUS(op): 5:48pm On Feb 08, 2020 |
The Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province (Anglican Communion), Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma, has described the allegation that the Enugu State Government was building an Islamic Centre at Uwani, Enugu, as untrue and misleading.
Archbishop Chukwuma who spoke when the family of the Anglican Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Rt. Rev. Aloysius Agbo, held a Thanksgiving Service and Dedication of their twins, at St. Paul's Cathedral, Nsukka, disclosed that what the state government is building is a Christian Chapel at the Government House, Enugu.
The cleric warned those peddling falsehood in the state to desist from such act capable of undermining the existing peace and good governance in the state, saying: "We don't want rumours anymore in Enugu State".
He urged the people of the state to continue to pray for successful trajectory of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi's administration and for the governor to fully actualize all his people-oriented programmes in the state, which he is pursuing vigorously.
The state government and the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had earlier debunked the allegation of an Islamic Centre in the state, calling on the public to disregard it entirely.
In a statement by the State Secretary of CAN, Apostle Dr. Joseph Ajujungwa, the Christian body disclosed that the state government “recently approved to build a Chapel of Worship at the Government House, Enugu, not an Islamic Centre, as being mischievously peddled on social media”.
Apostle Ajujungwa stated that CAN is happy with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, for being the first governor of the state to construct a Centre of Christian worship inside the Government House, Enugu, stressing that the feat is proof he is a true and committed Christian who serves God faithfully.
The CAN State Secretary, therefore, warned “those behind this fake news to desist from such act that could divide us by spreading rumours that are false”.
In its reaction, the state government in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, described the allegation as “unfortunate, malicious, wicked and false”, stating that “there is no truth in the said story”.
The information commissioner added that “the story is only aimed at distracting the state government from its widely acclaimed determination to deliver massive infrastructural development and good governance to the people of Enugu State”.
Aroh pointed out that the state government, in keeping with its commitment to open and transparent governance, always “abides by strict due process in the approval of any government project and expenditure”.
He said the people of the state are briefed regularly on projects the state government approved for execution as well as the financial value of such projects, such as the recent approval for the construction of a modern Christian Worship Centre in the Government House Enugu, “the first of its kind since the creation of the old Anambra State”.
According to him, “while the state government will continue to respect the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion as guaranteed by Section 38 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, we urge all these agents of mischief and falsehood to join hands with the government in its widely acclaimed effort to improve the standard of living of the people of Enugu State and continue the massive road construction and infrastructure works.
“These include the New Secretariat Building in Nsukka, the Unity Park/garden, the road network at the New Golf Estate Annex, and the unique efforts to provide security and protect lives and property in line with the oath of office which obviously has resulted in the provision of vehicles, motorcycles, modern fire fighting vehicles and equipment and the procurement of rapid response vehicles in the State”.
While calling on the public to disregard the false allegation, the commissioner maintained that “the state government will continue to do all within its powers to ensure positive development in the state and encourage harmonious co-existence of all residents”.

Politics › Ugwuanyi’s Giant Strides In Eight Months by OEPHIUS(op): 5:43am On Feb 08, 2020*. Modified: 7:25am On Feb 08, 2020 |
By Louis Amoke
Development is at the heart of good governance. Hence, the renewed vigour, zeal and sustained pace of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s administration in delivering more dividends of democracy to the good people of Enugu State, following his reelection, remain awesome and tell a vivid story about his focused leadership style geared towards the wellbeing of the people of the state.
Away from rhetoric and flattering political remarks, Gov. Ugwuanyi, through his actions and inactions in the last eight months of his second tenure, has proved beyond reasonable doubt that he is in governance to alleviate the sufferings of the people and impact their lives positively.
Having earned the confidence of the electorate who overwhelmingly gave him their massive support to win his reelection with unprecedented 95.54 percent of the votes cast, the highest in the history of the country, Gov. Ugwuanyi remains grateful to the people of Enugu State, reiterating his vow to continue to reward them with good governance as the true heroes of democracy.
In fulfilling this, in spite of the nation’s security and economic challenges, the governor has taken decisive actions that have brought meaningful development to the state. His administration’s peace and grassroots development initiatives have ensured rapid transformation in the rural communities where the dwellers had hitherto been neglected and denied their right to enjoy democracy dividends.
This development strategy was no doubt largely responsible for the 95.54 percent votes Gov. Ugwuanyi got from the electorate to win the last governorship election. The landslide victory was indeed a referendum on his first term achievements.
The victory became a motivation for the governor to bountifully reward the people with more dividends. Consequently, immediately after his second term inauguration, he constituted 12 Sectoral Adhoc Committees that reviewed all sectors of governance for effective service delivery.
Upon inaugurating the State Executive Council (EXCO) to drive the weighty recommendations of the committees, Gov. Ugwuanyi charged members of his cabinet to hit the ground running as he was in a hurry to fully deliver on his promises to the people.
Eight months down the line, it is worthy of note that Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration has sustained the tempo of peace and good governance in the state, awarding multiple contracts for execution of more critical infrastructural development across the state, worth over N9 billion.
The state government also approved the sum of N1.5 billion, N244 million and N200 million for payments of required counterpart funds for the Universal Basic Education scheme for construction and renovation of more primary and junior secondary school buildings, the APPEALS programme for women and youths agricultural empowerment and the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for comprehensive basic health services for every eligible resident in the state, respectively, totaling over N1.9 billion.
This is in addition to the N4.9 billion and N100 million counterpart funds paid by the present administration for the Universal Basic Education and Universal Health Coverage, respectively, during its first tenure.
Still on infrastructure, the projects awarded within the eight months period under review, which are ongoing with some concluded, include the completion of the Nike Lake junction - Harmony Estate Road - Amorji Nike - Adoration Pilgrimage Centre, Phase II and III, in Enugu East LGA, which will link Abakpa and Emene and serve as a critical bypass that will decongest traffic gridlock at Abakpa T-junction; the asphalting of a 22.443km inter-community link road - the Neke-Mbu-Ogbodu Aba-Obollo Etiti road - that connects Isi-Uzo and Udenu LGA, under the Rural Access and Mobility Project II (RAMP II); rehabilitation of numerous internal roads in the University town of Nsukka and the flood routing/erosion control works at Achi Street, Independence Layout, Enugu.
Others include the construction of access and internal road networks at Golf Estate Annex, located at Abor, in Udi LGA, which will cost the state government a whopping sum of N2.08 billion; the rehabilitation of Orie Market-Nkwo Ida-Afor Inyi road junction in Igbo-Eze North LGA; the Agbalaenyi junction-Enugu-Onitsha Expressway link road at Oji River LGA; the Amaeze Street outflow to Enugu Road catchment box culvert and the New Anglican Road - Obechara Road junction in Nsukka; the Akpabio Street, GRA, Enugu (completed) and access/internal road at the old Governor’s Lodge, GRA, Enugu (completed).
Others also include the beautification, fencing and provision of works of arts in major roundabouts in Enugu City as well as in the forest reserve adjacent to the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, now known as Unity Park, to serve as a tourist attraction and centre for relaxation and recreation.
Parts of the critical infrastructure also include the construction of the Nsukka Township Stadium (Phase One) in the University town of Nsukka; remodeling and renovation of the Abuja Building, Government House, Enugu (completed), to ensure efficient administrative service delivery; construction of fence, pavement, surfacing, landscaping and beautification of the newly constructed State Customary Court of Appeal headquarters, Independence Layout, Enugu; massive renovation of the State Judiciary Complex, Enugu and supply of 300 units of bicycles to complement the 260 vehicles as well as motorcycles purchased by the state government for Forest Guards’ operations in the rural areas, which are being distributed to the 260 electoral wards in the state for effective security engagement.
Also within the eight months of this second tenure, Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration equally purchased 100 units of Innoson patrol vans equipped with communication gadgets, which were distributed to security agencies in the state to aid their operations. It engaged 1,700 Forest Guards, repositioned the Vigilante/Neighborhood Watch groups and purchased 260 security vehicles for their operations.
The state government recently handed over five newly procured Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) fire-fighting trucks to the state fire service, for the five newly constructed fire service stations across the three senatorial districts of the state, to enhance their efficiency and effective response to emergencies. Further, the deployment of automated drones for surveillance is underway.
Other legacy projects commenced during the last lap of the first term, such as the State Secretariat Annex in Nsukka, the 10-unit Guest Houses, 14 new Court Buildings and Open Registries in the Judicial Divisions and Magisterial Districts across the state, 34 Customary Courts, two per local government area, and the first ever Enugu State Customary Court of Appeal Headquarters complex as well as the Court of Appeal Annex in Enugu, etc, are nearing completion.
These great feats are in line with the state government’s urban renewal drive, rural development policy and transformation agenda in the State Judiciary, which the governor has pursued vigorously to give every citizen and resident of the state a sense of belonging irrespective of class, political affiliation or religious status.
One fundamental aspect of contract execution under Ugwuanyi’s administration is the start-to-finish policy, which ensures that projects are duly awarded and backed up with funds for timely completion - a scenario that has dissuaded the ugly experience of abandoned projects in the state.
Only recently, the state government approved the report of the joint committee for the negotiation of consequential adjustment for payment of N30,000 Minimum Wage for state civil servants, which according to the Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Mrs. Adaonah Kene-Uyanwune and the state leadership of Organized Labour, was a product of collective bargaining, based on the economic indices of the state, which the union leaders said they were comfortable with. State workers and retirees have continued to receive their salaries and pensions regularly, even without the receipt of federal allocations.
Going by the highlights of the key deliverables of the 2020 capital budget, the state government, among other legacy projects, proposes to construct the first Enugu Underpass/Flyover at Nike Lake Resort/Nike Road T-junction, Enugu; construct and reconstruct more urban and rural roads; establish small and medium scale industries in the 17 LGAs; construct the Adada Campus of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Nsukka; ensure the operationalization of the Enugu Medical Diagnostic Centre; achieve full implementation of the Universal Health Coverage in the state; and complete the construction, landscaping and furnishing of the International Conference Center (ICC), Enugu, among others.
From the foregoing, it is therefore crystal clear that Ugwuanyi’s administration is truly poised to reward Ndi Enugu with more dividends of democracy in keeping with his vision and in appreciation of their love, goodwill, solidarity and overwhelming support all this while. Enugu State is truly in the hands of God!

Politics › Tricycle, Motorcycle Operators In Nsukka Given One-Month To Obtain Number Plates by OEPHIUS(op): 5:31am On Feb 06, 2020 |
Enugu government has given a one month ultimatum to tricycle and motorcycle operators in Enugu North senatorial zone to obtain their plate numbers and rider’s permit or risk sanctions.
The senatorial zone comprises Igboeze North and South with the following local government areas, Igboetiti, Nsukka, Udenu and Uzouwani. Commissioner for Transport,Chief Matthias Ekweremadu, gave the directive in Nsukka, yesterday, at an interactive forum with the National Union of Road Transport Workers, tricycles and motorcycles associations in the zone.
The commissioner warned that failure would attract sanctions, including impounding their tricycles and motorcycles.
Ekweremadu noted with dismay that over 60 per cent of tricycles and motorcycles operating in the zone had no plate numbers and rider’s permit, describing such operators as engaging in “illegal and unacceptable” businesses.
“All operators of tricycles and motorcycles in the zone are given one month from today, February 5 to get their plate numbers and rider’s permit from the state government or their tricycles and motorcycles will be impounded by the ministry. Operators should also have correct paper particulars of their tricycles and motorcycles as well as ensure that their side mirrors are functioning well, while plying on roads,” he said.
He explained that the rider’s permit which was an equivalent of drivers’ license was approved by the Enugu government in 2019 for tricycles and motorcycles operators.. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/enugu-gives-tricycle-motorcycle-operators-in-nsukka-one-month-to-obtain-number-plate-permit/

…Honours him with an award of excellence
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Enugu State chapter, on Friday, honoured Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi with an award of excellence in recognition of his unrelenting efforts in entrenching peace and good governance in the state. “We are very happy that this award is given to you, not on grounds of politics. It is given to you because we know your worth and what you have done for this state”, he said.
