Politics / Re: PLACE TRAVEL BAN ON TRUMP, CRONIES - MURIC by OfficialMURIC: 6:29am On Jan 16, 2021
Mr Trump makes no effort to curb incitement to violence against minorities, nor to promote the idea that America belongs to everyone who lives there.

On the other hand, the immediate cause of America's disunity, Mr Trump, is on his way out. This is the socially responsible thing to do.

Mr Trump’s bite turned out to be almost as bad as his bark.
Politics / PLACE TRAVEL BAN ON TRUMP, CRONIES - MURIC by OfficialMURIC: 6:29am On Jan 16, 2021
The Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria has been urged to place a travel ban on Donald Trump, the outgoing president of the United States of America. Also to be sanctioned with him are his key allies for their ignoble roles in the US 2020 presidential elections particularly the storming of the Capitol.

This advice was given in a press statement issued by an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), on Monday, 11th January, 2021. The press release was signed by the group’s director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The group said:

“We strongly denounce the role played by President Donald Trump in the last US general elections. Trump’s refusal to acknowledge defeat shows acute desertification of the spirit of sportsmanship. His insistence on electoral fraud despite several court declarations to the contrary is a manifestation of selfishness, overambition and inordinate lust for power. Above all, his incitement which led to the storming of the Capitol is despicable, repulsive and preposterous. Trump has stained America’s reputation as a great democracy.

“MURIC calls on the Federal Government (FG) to speak up on the American debacle. America’s condemnation of African and other third world countries has been deafening enough to attract a tornado of backlashes at this moment. We are not happy that FG has remained silent. China, Turkey and Iran have spoken up. The voice of Africa must also be heard and the continent is looking unto Nigeria to lead the way.

“We must tell America to its face that tyranny is colour blind and dictators can emerge from the least expected places on earth. There is no country which is occupied by angels only, least of all America. We call on FG to place travel ban on outgoing President Donald Trump and his key allies. It is hoped that other African countries will key into the idea. It just has to be on record that once upon a time, America produced a tyrant, a bully and an insurrectionist.

“The American tragedy has exposed the weakness in all man-made political and economic theories. Trumpism is the Archile’s heel of Western democracy just as perestroika and glastnost spelled doom for communism. In the same vein, socialism isnot different from a fake drug administered by a quack doctor.

“The only enduring system is the one made by Allah, the Supreme Creator, who knows the nature of man and how best he should be governed. This is why Islamic political thought posits at-taohiid, al-khilafah, ash-shurah and al-akhirah. At-Taohiid is the principle of oneness of all existence: all are a miniature representation of a whole and a microcosm in a macro, which is Islam, a complete way of life.

“Al-khilafah affirms the representative nature of man. The leader holds his position in lieu of the divine physical presence. He is a shadow of Allah on earth. Just as the shadow cannot afford to live in isolation of its substance, a leader must always be conscious of Allah.

“Ash-shurah is consultation with the people. It is a reflection of Islamic democracy. But whereas Western democracy (government of the people, by the people, for the people) lays emphasis on people only, the focus of Shurah is Allah, the Creator of the people. Islamic democracy is therefore government of Allah, by the people created by Allah, for Allah’s own creatures. The leader in Islam must relate both vertically (with Allah) and horizontally (with the people). Whereas the leader only relates horizontally with the people in Western democracy, he interfaces both vertically and horizontally in Islamic political thought.

“The concept of al-akhirah evokes the fear of Allah in the heart of politicians as they weigh the consequences of their actions on the Last Day before taking them. Al-akhirah is about leaders being held accountable on the Day of Judgement. This is what is lacking in Western democracy, including communism and socialism. This is why Donald Trump made a mess of the American written constitution which is based on George Washington’s Boston Tea Party, and Mikhail Gorbachev swept the rug off the feet of Lenin, man of steel and Stalin in a single sweep.”

Politics / Re: Recuse Yourself From The Peace Committee: MURIC Tells Kukah by OfficialMURIC: 9:50am On Jan 01, 2021
Mr Kukah is a religious pop star who uses his strategic position to punch above his weight. He has shown himself as 'phoney' who will abandon his own morals in pursuit of cheap political point.

But Buhari isn’t going to be scared into complying to a demand with no precedent.

Politics / Recuse Yourself From The Peace Committee: MURIC Tells Kukah by OfficialMURIC: 9:03am On Jan 01, 2021
It appears the last has not been heard of the Kukah controversy as the Nigerian Islamic human rights body, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has called on Bishop Mathew Hasan Kukah to recuse himself from the General Abdul Salaam-led Peace Committee.

The call was made by the director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, in a press statement circulated on Wednesday, 30th December, 2020.

“It will be recalled that Bishop Mathew Hasan Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese indirectly called for a coup and referred to Islam as a violent religion about four days ago. We strongly believe that those pronouncements are inconsistent with the bishop’s status particularly as the secretary of Nigeria’s Peace Committee.

“How did such a belligerent combatant emerge as the secretary of Nigeria’s Peace Committee? What good can come from a man who is filled with hate and bias for a large section of the country? He calls for a coup against a democratically elected government. He stigmatized Islam as a violent religion. He derides the North. We demand that Kukah should honourably recuse himself from the Peace Committee.Failure to do so will have a devastating effect of discrediting that committee. It will mean that the committee was set up in the first place for a partisan purpose.

“This is because many see Bishop Kukah as the de facto leader of the Committee. The Peace Committee must clarify some issues surrounding its formation and modus operandi. Whose idea was the whole thing from the beginning? Where is the committee’s secretariat? Is it true that the whole committee was Kukah’s initiative ab initio? Is it also true that its secretariat is headed and managed by the director of the Kukah Center? If that is so, General Abdulsalam must have been persuaded to come on board and serve as the chairman just to give legitimacy and credibility to the idea.

“This Peace Committee has a credibility crisis on its hands unless it can remove Kukah as secretary and as a member if the bishop fails to recuse himself. Nigerian Muslims no longer have any confidence in the Peace Committee. It may as well disband while the members go home to sleep.

“This is the honourable thing for the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese to do in view of the humongous allegation levelled against him. A national peace committee needs wide acceptance from the general populace in order to function effectively. Unfortunately this does not appear to be the true situation on ground at present.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that the secretary of any organization is its livewire. He keeps their records and writes their reports. A man who is heavily biased against one faith cannot be trusted to prepare a fair report on interfaith issues. That position is too sensitive to be left in the office of a firebrand missionary known for his emotional outbursts.

“The silence of the Peace Committee since the Kukah controversy began is also disturbing. A peace committee whose secretary comes out with blazing guns firing from all cylinders at a section of the country and calls for a coup while its members keep mute gives cause for concern. It gives the impression that the secretary is holding members of the committee to ransom. He calls the shots. Afterall, any statement to be issued by the committee, ceteris paribus, is expected to be prepared by the same secretary. Here comes the hard nut.

“Nigerian Muslims have no confidence in the Peace Committee as long as Kukah remains its secretary and member. He has failed to remain neutral. His bias against Muslims has been openly displayed. Rev. Fr. Kukah should recuse himself, otherwise the committee has to disband.

“This has become necessary in view of the jaundiced position taken by the Catholic mission yesterday in an official statement. Nigerian Catholics declared their full backing of the preposterous pronouncements of Bishop Kukah. In that situation, it is no longer acceptable to leave the destiny of the Peace Committee in the hands of the Catholic Bishop.

“The question must be asked: who is the secretary of the Peace Committee? Kukah or the Catholic Diocese? A situation whereby Kukah issues a highly combustible statement and the Nigerian Catholic Mission backs him calls for caution.

“MURIC suggests immediate review of the composition and operation of the Peace Committee. The secretariat of the Peace Committee must be moved out of the Kukah Centre. A neutral place must be found. In addition, a neutral person who is not head or official of any religious group or a person known for making volatile statements must be made head of its secretariat. The Peace Committee may also consider coopting a co-chairman who must be a Christian since the current chairman is a Muslim. This will engender balance.

“We call on the Chairman and members of the Peace Committee to take these suggestions seriously in order to retain the respect it currently enjoys. A stitch in time saves nine. Immediate consultations and proper advice will save the committee from any embarrassment in future.”

Politics / Christmas Message: Muric Greets Christians, Cautions Against Attacks by OfficialMURIC: 9:07am On Dec 25, 2020
On the eve of 2020 Christmas, the Nigerian Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has felicitated with Christians in the country. The organization also urged the security agencies to protect places of worship during the yuletide.

MURIC’s Christmas message was relayed through a press statement issued by the director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Thursday, 24th December, 2020.

MURIC said:

“We felicitate with our Christian neighbours as they mark 2020 Christmas. We share with them the aura of festivity and wish them a merry Christmas. In particular, our greetings go to Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice President of Nigeria, Rev. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria and all Christians in the country.

“We urge the security agencies to ensure adequate protection for places of worship and all law abiding citizens during the yuletide particularly in view of the alarm raised by the Department of State Services (DSS) concerning the plan being made by unscrupulous elements to carry out series of bombings at this period.

By the same token, we charge Nigerians to be security conscious and to report any suspicious person to the security agencies. People inside or around churches and mosques should be on the lookout for strange faces as well as abandoned vehicles, bags and packages. Such items should not be touched but reports should be lodged with the authorities with immediate effect.

“We call on Nigerians to spend the period in sober reflection and to pray for the safe return of Leah Sharibu in particular, the Chibok girls and all other captives in general. Nigerians are also requested to spend the Christmas period praying for the return of peace, security and economic stability to the country.

“We advise non-moderate fellow Muslims who have always criticized and condemned MURIC each time we send messages of love to Christians during festivals to reflect on the true teachings of Islam and the essence of humanity. As we strive lawfully for the realization of Allah-given fundamental human rights of Nigerian Muslims, MURIC will not be swayed from the path of love for fellowmen, tolerance, forgiveness and peaceful coexistence, all in an atmosphere of mutual respect.”

Politics / Re: Return Of Kankara Boys: MURIC Give Kudos To President Muhammadu Buhari by OfficialMURIC: 6:31am On Dec 19, 2020
Without a strongman like President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria might have been gobbled up by Boko haram, bandits and other criminal elements. With the prompt release of the Kankara boys, that is a sign of progress that we are being led by the right person.

His path to lead this nation into greatness has long been set.
Politics / Return Of Kankara Boys: MURIC Give Kudos To President Muhammadu Buhari by OfficialMURIC: 6:21am On Dec 19, 2020
The 344 boys who were kidnapped from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State on Friday, 11th December, 2020, returned yesterday, Friday, 18th December, 2020, exactly one week after their abduction. Meanwhile the Nigerian Islamic human rights organization, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has given kudos to President Muhammadu Buhari for the successful rescue of the Kankara school boys.

MURIC gave the commendation in a press statement circulated to pressmen on Saturday, 19th December, 2020. The statement was signed by the group’s director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

According to the statement, “We received news of the return of the kidnapped Kankasa boys with immense joy. The successful rescue operation adds another feather to President Muhammadu Buhari’s hat. We note with every seriousness that the early return of the boys was made possible by Mr. President’s prompt action.

“PMB had issued orders to the security agencies for a joint rescue operation immediately after the criminal abduction occurred. The security agencies also deserve commendation for swinging into action and mapping out a successful rescue plan. The fact that the pursuit began very early made it possible for the army to locate the position of the kidnapped boys and their abductors. It also enabled the army to surround the area. The hoodlums had no option than to surrender after a few days having realized the hopelessness of their ill-fated attack.

“We are constrained to compare PMB’s prompt action in the Kankara boys’ affair to the costly procrastination exhibited by ex-President Jonathan after 276 Chibok girls were abducted on 14th April, 2014. The former president was cynical and undecided. He continued to dilly-dally for about 21 days after the abduction while the army waited for his order. Jonathan set up a fact-finding committee nearly a month after the tragedy. This allowed the Boko Haram abductors to dig in. An eye witness saw 15 trucks painted in army colours loaded with girls on 25th April, 2014 (almost two weeks later) at Gwarzo, close to the Cameroonian border and far away from Chibok.

“MURIC calls on Nigerians to exercise patience and to show understanding on the security challenge facing the country, particularly insurgency and kidnapping. There is need to realize that it is easier for the army to face a known enemy than a faceless foe. Boko Haram is into guerilla warfare and that is the most difficult insurgency to stamp out. Their target is to rubbish government’s efforts and cause the latter as much embarrassment as possible. No nation has been known to successfully and single-handedly eliminate guerilla fighters without engaging them in negotiations.

“Unfortunately too, nobody seems to see the significance of the ability of the Nigerian Army to restrict the activities of the insurgents to the North East and to stop its bombing campaigns, including suicide bombing. We therefore urge Nigerians to put on their thinking caps once again in retrospect. For the avoidance of doubts, we are not saying the security situation is good. It is not. What we are saying is that we should show understanding.

“We were all alive three or four years ago when the PMB administration was faced by a fiercely antagonistic National Assembly which rejected the release of a huge sum of money meant for boosting security. Foreign partners who promised to sell vital weapons to Nigeria three years ago are still withholding them. We affirm that it is easy to criticize, condemn and dance to the gallery, but it raises one above the crowd to be able to look beyond the broken gate into the garden full of beautiful flowers”.

Politics / Re: MURIC COMMENDS BENUE GORVERNOR ON DECLARATION OF FRIDAYS AS WORK-FREE DAY by OfficialMURIC: 6:26am On Nov 23, 2020
Politicians in Nigeria have often seemed keener to uphold Christo-colonial ideas than to apply laws that give muslims freedom they have been denied of. With this, we believe Muric cause has arouse the passion it previously lacked.

Someday, perhaps, Nigerian muslims will be allowed to have a workfree friday. Suddenly, there is hope.

Politics / MURIC COMMENDS BENUE GORVERNOR ON DECLARATION OF FRIDAYS AS WORK-FREE DAY by OfficialMURIC: 6:07am On Nov 23, 2020
The government of Benue State has approved Friday as a workfree day. This is one of the measures aimed at cushioning the effect of COVID-19 in the state. However, the measure is to run for three months only, from 6th November, 2020 to 29th January, 2021. This is to enable civil servants in the state to harvest their farm products during the period (https://www.akelicious.net/benue-state-govt-approves-fridays-as-work-free-day/)

In its reaction to the development, the Nigerian Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), which has been in the forefront of the campaign for a workfree Friday, has welcomed the three-month moratorium. MURIC described it as a half measure and a temporary relief for workers in Benue State. In addition, the group called on Northern governors and legislators to leverage on the directive by declaring workfree Friday throughout the year. MURIC’s observation came on Monday, 23rd November, 2020 through its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

According to MURIC, “The hypocrisy of Muslim-haters has been exposed by the action of the Benue State government. Our critics claim that there would be confusion if Friday is declared a workfree day. But a whole state has gone ahead to declare the day free and heaven has not fallen in Makurdi. Though the state government’s intention has nothing to do with allowing Muslims to worship, it has served as a reference point. What it implies is that a workfree Friday is possible if the political will is there.

“The onus is therefore on Northern governors and legislators to set the ball rolling. If the Benue State governor can issue a directive to declare Friday free for three months to promote a bumper harvest, Northern governors and legislators have every reason to leverage on that by introducing workfree Friday bills in their houses of assembly which the governors can pass into law.

“The freedom of Nigerian Muslims is in the hands of their political leaders.Nobody is going to set them free until they are ready to break the shackles with their own hands. What is good for agricultural bumper harvest is good for robust spiritual fulfilment. It is also a wakeup call for Muslim the youth to go into politics in large number. The destiny of nations is shaped by politicians. Muslims who fail to participate in politics will be ruled by politicians who hate Muslims.

“MURIC calls on Nigerian Muslims to open their eyes very wide. Muslim families are scattered like wild oats every Friday. The father is working in the office while the mother is teaching in a school at a distant location. The children are learning in separate schools. The Muslim family cannot attend the same mosque together on Friday. Meanwhile Christian families go to the same church together and listen to the same sermon on Saturday and Sunday. This situation has far-reaching effects on spiritual development.

“What MURIC is saying in essence is that Nigerian Muslims are seriously shortchanged in the system and there is need for redress. The Northern states where Muslims are in overwhelming majority must wake up to this reality. The Federal Government (FG) is not ready to listen even though we have been on this campaign since 1993 when the director of MURIC published his 135-page book

Entitled ‘The Friday Question’.

“It is also a potential area of interest whenever FG is ready for restructuring. The gross imbalance in the recognition of days of worship for Christians and Muslims must be addressed under restructuring. Those who are clamouring for restructuring should take note because restructuring must not be selective. It is supposed to address lopsidedness in all facets of the Nigerian life.

“A system that gives Christians two days (Saturday for Seventh Day Adventists and Sunday for other Christians) but gives nothing to the Muslims cannot be described as fair or just. It is a contravention of the law of natural justice. Two out of seven days per week for Christians and nothing for Muslims is grossly unfair. Mathematicians should put that together. It means Nigerian Christians are given 104 days out of 365 days of every year to worship their God. That is a whopping 28.57%! But the Muslims are given nothing. Yet our neighbours shout to high heaven that Nigeria is Islamised and the cry of ‘Islamisation’ rents the air.

“Islamisation my foot!”

Politics / Re: SUIT CHALLENGING ARABIC INSCRIPTION ON NAIRA, THE HEIGHT OF IGNORANCE - MURIC by OfficialMURIC: 6:36am On Nov 16, 2020
Christians in Nigeria have long had something of an inferiority complex. The view that Arabic is Islam is as short-sighted as it is cynical. The above gave justified our statement that Islam and Christianity do not share a common interest. One (Islam) preaches peace and tolerance, while the other breeds hatred and violence.

Nothing will change MURIC's view: Christians are bent on blocking the rise of Islam.

Politics / SUIT CHALLENGING ARABIC INSCRIPTION ON NAIRA, THE HEIGHT OF IGNORANCE - MURIC by OfficialMURIC: 6:17am On Nov 16, 2020
If Arabic is Islam, then English is Christianity.

The Nigerian Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has described the suit challenging the Arabic inscription on the Nigerian currency (naira) as acrobatic religiousity. MURIC made the assertion on Monday, 16th November, 2020 while responding to a suit filed by a Lagos-based lawyer, Malcolm Omirhobo. MURIC’s statement was issued by its director and founder, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

Omirhobo argued that the Arabic inscription on naira notes portray Nigeria as an Islamic state contrary to the country’s constitutional status of a secular state. The lawyer also filed a similar suit against the Nigerian Army seeking the removal of Arabic inscriptions from its logo. The cases are being heard before Justice Mohammed Liman at the Lagos High Court. (https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2020/11/10/cbn-opposes-suit-to-remove-arabic-inscriptions-from-banknotes/)

But according to MURIC, “Omirhobo’s approach is not only naïve, it is pedestrian and kindergarten. This suit against Arabic on naira manifests acute desertification of religious tolerance, exhibition of undiluted acrobatic religiousity, NAFDAC-registered gymnastic spirituality and Oxford cum Harvard-certificated ignorance.

“How many times do we need to tell our Christian neighbours that Nigeria is not a secular but a multi-religious state. A secular state is one that does not recognize religion as in communist states. But Nigeria recognizes all the religions in the country and the Constitution also begins with the words ‘under God’. Secular states do not recognize the existence of God.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 says inter alia at its very beginning, ‘We the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria: having firmly and solemnly resolved : to live in unity and harmony as one indivisible and indissoluble sovereign Nation under God…’ So how can Nigeria be a secular state when we are ‘under God’? In addition, nowhere in the whole constitution was the word ‘secular’ ever used and we challenge anyone who can find that word from the constitution to mention the chapter, section and sub-section.

“Seeking to remove Arabic from the naira is the height of ignorance because Arabic is just a language like English or French, not a religion. By the way, what is on the naira is not even Arabic. It is ‘Ajami’ using Arabic letters as a form of transliteration. Even if Omirhobo single-handedly succeeds in removing Arabic from the naira, is he going to remove the numerals 5, 10, 100, 1000 indicating the denominations as well? If he cannot, then he still has a long way to go because even those numbers are Arabic.

“The numerical system (1, 2, 3, 4, etc) were invented by a Muslim mathematician by name Alkhawarizmi (died 850) in the 9th century. Nay and more than that. Whereas ancient Greeks had men like Plato, Aristotle, Euclide, Thales, Theodocius, etc whose scientific theories only managed to survive their times and Europe boasts today of scholars like Nicholas Copernicus, Francis Bacon, Galileo Galilei, Rene Descartes and Isaac Newton with their moribund and Godless postulates, the list of renowned Muslim scientists is endless.

“The truth is that religious fanatics have grown paranoia about Islam and they arrogate the Arabic language to the religion alone whereas this is not true. Their hatred for Islam and the Muslims is transferred to the Arabic language. This transferred aggression beclouded their perspicacity to the extent that they fail to realize that Islam is not synonymous with Arabic language.

“For instance, Israel’s currency has Arabic inscription on it. Nigerian Christians who go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem every year spend Israel’s money and see Arabic on it. Did they tear it into pieces in anger? They did not ask the Israeli authorities to remove the Arabic on their currency but when they return to Nigeria they maintain their hardline opposition to Arabic on naira. Where is objectivity? Is this not articulated religiousity?

“Again, hardly would any imported electronic gadget enter Nigeria without its manual containing an Arabic section. That is business sense, not religion. But Muslim-haters are swayed by emotion and they cannot separate the wheat from the chaff. Common sense is not so common. Of course there are still Christians who are moderate, liberal and realistic. They are the few exceptions who will not allow themselves to be led by the nose.

“One major argument against the removal of Arabic from the naira is that a large percentage of the Nigerian population will be cut off from our monetary system if Arabic is removed from the naira because Arabic is one of the local languages in Nigeria. It is used by the Shuwa Arabs in Borno State. Therefore Arabic cannot be a foreign language.

“Furthermore, the Bible used by Christians in Israel, Egypt, Palestine, Libya, Syria and other Arab countries are printed in Arabic language only because that is the only language they understand. Does that make the Bible an Islamic Bible? Their church services are conducted in Arabic. Have those churches become mosques?

“Interestingly enough, God is called Allah in the Arabic Bible. If Arab Christians want to say ‘God is great’, they also say ‘Allahu Akbar’. To thank God they say ‘alhamdulilah’ just like Muslims. The population of Palestine is 12 million and 7% (about 840,000) of this number are Christians. Yet the language of this 7% is Arabic. Perhaps Omirhobo will like to apply to the International Court at the Hagues to reject them as Christians because they speak Arabic?

“Omirhobo’s argument that Arabic on naira notes portrays Nigeria as an Islamic state holds no water because if Arabic is Islam, then English is Christianity. Hence if Arabic on the naira note is Islamisation, non-Arabic letters on the same naira is Christianisation. By extension, if the use of Arabic is Islamisation, the use of English language in Nigeria, particularly as a lingua franca, is the mother of all christianisation.

“For equity, therefore, Nigeria should have two official languages: Arabic and English with priority and emphasis in that alphabetical order. But in their magnanimity, tolerance and wisdom, Nigerian Muslims have not come forward to demand that Arabic should be Nigeria’s second official language. For that reason alone, the plaintiff’s request for the removal of Arabic from the naira is frivolous, petty, selfish, myopic and parochial.

“Perhaps the plaintiff thinks Nigerian Muslims were the ones who initiated the inscription of Arabic on both the army badge and the naira notes. Omirhobo needs to be told that even the colonial masters inscribed Arabic on the currency printed by Britain and used in Nigeria. The words: ‘pound daya’, i.e. one pound was inscribed on colonial currency. Omirhobo may therefore need to sue the Queen of England.

“To continue along the lanes of history, [i]it was not even Nigerian Muslim leaders who brought the idea of Arabic in the Nigerian currency in post-independence Nigeria. The man who initiated it was a Christian, a Urhobo officer by name General David Akpode Ejoor (rtd). He was the one who introduced the Arabic inscription and the Star emblem into the Nigeria Army crest. He was given the assignment and research led him to pick the Arabic words ‘nasrun minallahi’ (meaning ‘victory is from God’) and a committee made up of three ministers of the First Republic : Muhammadu Ribadu (Defence), Festus Okotie-Eboh (Finance) and Yar'adua (Works and Housing) approved his choice. Ejoor confirmed this in his book ‘Reminiscences’ (page 16).

“The Christian who took the Central Bank of Nigeria to court claiming the country has been Islamized because of the Arabic inscription on the naira note failed to see how heavily Nigeria has been Christianized by observing Saturday as a public holiday because of the Seventh Day Adventists and Sunday because of other Christians. But the Muslims are not given any day at all.

“MURIC appeals to Nigerians not to allow the fear mongers and merchants of hate continue to spread fear and sow discord among us. Many of those saddled with the task of uniting us have become instruments of division. Ex-President Jonathan is an example. He removed Arabic from the naira because he listened to hate preachers whom he took along on his futile but numerous trips to Jerusalem. They indoctrinated him into believing that Arabic on the naira implies Islamisation. Although he saw Arabic on Israeli currency on his trips to Jerusalem, yet he swallowed the lie hook, line and sinker. Of course it cost him his much-coveted second term because his action had been rightly interpreted as anti-Muslim.

“We charge Nigerians to open up their minds in order to avoid becoming victims of accidental civilisation or, worse still, educated illiterates. Arabic is not Islam and Islam is not Arabic. One is a language, the other is a religion. Let us learn to understand, to tolerate, to give, to forgive and to love.”

Some unscrupulous politicians and foreign powers

Let's distinguish fact from fiction.

Politics / MURIC TO MUSLIMS: DON'T JOIN ANY NEW PROTEST by OfficialMURIC: 6:34am On Nov 12, 2020
Nigerian Muslims have been advised to ignore any invitation to join any new protest. The advice was given by the Nigerian Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), in a statement issued on Monday, 9th November, 2020, by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:

“The attention of MURIC has been drawn to subterranean rumblings as precursors of demonstrations. We like to remind Nigerian Muslims in particular and all citizens in general that the last experience we had during #EndSARS protests was very bitter as it pushed the country to the edge of the precipice. Protests are legitimate as long as they are peaceful but the last one was hijacked by disgruntled politicians, religious bigots and ethnic jingoists. The smoke from the burning embers can still be seen above our chimneys.

“There is undisputable evidence showing that funds for the protest were provided by people who lack integrity and whose sources of income lack credibility. These are people who have been engaging in criminal activities. They have been playing hide and seek with the police and their topmost wish has always been to get rid of all signs of law enforcement agents. Unfortunately innocent but gullible Nigerians played into their hands and became weapons of mass destruction.

“Ceteris paribus, we expected the protests to abate the moment government accepted all the five demands made by the youth but this did not happen. The demands were expanded until they became frivolous, ridiculous and irrational. The ensuing destruction of properties during the protest was too massive, enough to cause goose pimples in anyone with the milk of homo sapien compos mentis flowing in his or her veins. It is also enough to discourage another protest so soon.

“Hoodlums have been allowed to destroy facilities that coming generations should enjoy. Only the apostles of Shaytan (Satan) will be happy at the sight of more than 150 new luxurious buses and other assets of the Lagos State government burnt by hoodlums during the last protest.

“To what end? Does Governor Sanwo olu ride those buses? It is so illogical. These were buses meant for poor Lagosians. How could we allow ourselves to be deceived into destroying facilities intended to make life better for the poor? Are we fighting the masses? Nevertheless, we believe that Lagos will rise again to the chagrin of envious eyes and enemies of progress. It is for these reasons that we are calling on Nigerian Muslims in particular and other citizens in general not to join any new protest. Enough is enough.

“The Glorious Qur’an commands Muslims to join hands in righteous deeds, not for aggression and destruction. It says, ‘Join hands together in good deeds and piety. But do not join others to commit sin and aggression’ (Qur’an 5:2). This is a clear injunction directed at Muslims and it is enough for them to steer clear of any new protest. Somebody once said, ‘Fool me once, shame on you; fool me a second time, shame on me’. ‘Wisdom’, according to the Prophet (SAW), ‘is the property of believers’. We should not allow anyone to deceive us into joining a rudderless protest again.

“Our observations in the last protest are that it was mainly a southern affair. The North did not participate. This tainted it with ethnic colouration. Also, while Islamic scholars and Muslim leaders in the South West shunned the protest, Christian clergymen from the region and from the South East actively encouraged it. Igbo Christians also seized the opportunity to get rid of mosques within their domain. This gave it religious bias.

“The modus operandi of the protest also exposed the evil intention of the organisers. Police personnel were attacked. Some were killed. Many were injured. About 15 police stations were burned down in Lagos alone. Nigerians forgot that nearly every one of them has at least one relation in the police force (a son, daughter, brother, sister, cousin, nephew or in-law). Yet they allowed attacks on policemen.

“What if the next policeman attacked is your father or brother? It became apparent that the intention was to enthrone the Hobbesian state, a state of lawlessness where might is right and innocent citizens will be at the mercy of cultists, armed robbers, kidnappers and warlords. Unfortunately this is exactly what is happening in many places where police has been destabilized.

“The approach was similar to leftist-communist inclination as public and private properties were mercilessly looted and innocent citizens were dispossesed of their prized possessions. On the contrary, MURIC belongs to Rousseau’s school of thought where ‘right is might’ and where there is respect for the rule of law. Hatred for the rich is contrary to the teachings of Islam. Allah gave them their riches. We too must work hard enough and we must be contented with what we have.

“The aftermath of the attacks on policemen and their stations was general commotion. Daylight robberies occurred in Lagos in particular but there were no policemen to call. It was every man to himself. Traffic gridlocks forced motorists to remain in one spot up to three hours but there were no traffic policemen to ease the flow of traffic. As you make your bed, so you will sleep on it.

“Nigerian Muslims and, indeed, every right thinking Nigerian for that matter, should not allow this to happen again. We must not join any fresh protest under whatever guise. Leaderless protests lead to chaos. Leaderless protests come with awful intentions. We should not join them. The last demonstration has taught us a bitter lesson, namely, that it is difficult to know the true intention of any protest. They may start peacefully but graduate to violent outings.

“Our major points in this advocacy are : one, Nigerian Muslims and all reasonable citizens should avoid joining any new protest; two, destruction of public and private properties can only be the handiwork of unscrupulous and unpatriotic elements; three, Nigerians should be wary of leftist-communist revolutions which aim at violent seizure of properties of the rich and the middle class and, four, attacks on policemen and burning of police stations will only open the door for criminal activities with the attendant disruption of socio-economic life whose victims will be the poor masses.”

Politics / Stop Burning Mosques In Igboland - MURIC by OfficialMURIC: 6:47am On Nov 03, 2020
Two mosques were set ablaze by the Igbo in Enugu on Saturday, 31st October, 2020. The Islamic School, Afikpo, Ebonyi State has also received threats of impending invasion. It will be recalled that 11 (eleven) Muslims were killed during the #EndSARS protests in Port Harcourt and Orlu while the Orlu Central Mosque was completely destroyed barely two weeks ago. Markets belonging to Muslims in the region were also attacked and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed, including whole trailers with the goods.

The Nigerian Islamic human rights group, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has condemned the attacks on Muslims in Igboland. MURIC called for a halt to the burning of mosques in the South East and South South. The organization also appealed to the Inspector General of Police to protect Muslims as well as their corporate and individual properties in the region.

MURIC’s appeal came via a press statement issued on Monday, 2nd November, 2020 by its Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

“Christians in Igboland are not yet satisfied with the cold-blooded killing of 11 (eleven) Muslims during #EndSARS protests. They are thirsty for more blood. They attacked two mosques in Nsukka on Saturday, 31st October, 2020. These were the mosque at Old Barracks junction and the Central Mosque on Eden Road, Nsukka.

“The fracas reportedly started after a Muslim lady got into an argument with a keke Napep driver over transport fare. It is becoming glaring that there is a conspiracy to wipe out Muslims in Igboland and any little excuse is seized upon to descend on Muslims living in their midst.

“Even as we go to press, the only Islamic school in the whole Eastern Nigeria which is in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, is under palpable and severe threat. The school management has received about three threat messages in the past one week alone. Attack on the school is imminent and the state government has not uttered a word. This school is a boarding institution with about 250 students in its hostels. Those students came from all over Nigeria. What does the governor of Ebonyi think will happen if 250 Muslim students are slaughtered under his watch?

“MURIC appeals to the Inspector General of Police to protect Muslims and their corporate and individual properties in Igboland. In the same manner, we remind the governors of Eastern and South-South states that the buck stops on their tables. As the chief security officers in their respective states, they have the responsibility to protect all citizens under them. We are compiling reports of attacks on Muslims and their properties in the region.

“We demand adequate compensation for victims of Igbo religious fanaticism. Families of deceased Muslims must receive commensurate compensation. The governor of Enugu State owes it a duty to rebuild the two mosques which were burnt in Nsukka on Saturday. Only thus can he assure Nigerians that he did not give tacit approval to attacks on his Muslim subjects.

“MURIC calls the attention of Nigerians and the international community to the current trend of constant and unprovoked attacks on Muslims, the killing of innocent Muslims, the burning of their mosques and the destruction of their individual properties in Igboland and South-South Nigeria. It should be noted now that Christians are the first to unleash violence on Nigerian Muslims and the latter are not even retaliating.

“We note with disgust the hypocritical silence of the unholy alliance of the Middle Belt, the Northern Christian Elders Forum, Afenifere, Ohaneze and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). All hell would have been let loose had it been Christians who were being killed. But none of them feels concerned now because Muslims are at the receiving end. None of them issued any statement condemning the unprovoked killing of Muslims and none of them called the killers to order. Rather, they are encouraging their youths to shed more Muslim blood

"They are used to hearing the White House asking Nigerian authorities, ‘Why are you killing Christians in Nigeria?’ Ironically, nobody has asked the White House, ‘Why are you killing American blacks?’ We denounce Western asymmetric scale of justice that looks the other way when Nigerian Christians are killing Muslims.

“We charge the West, particularly the United States, to re-examine the situation in Nigeria within the real context of true events. Stories of Christians being killed are, more often than not, marketing gimmicks intended only to attract millions of dollars in charity donations to Christian missionaries after the ‘playing the victim’ soap opera. Nobody expected America to swallow it hook, line and sinker but that is exactly what America has done.

“MURIC salutes Nigerian Muslims for their resilience. We advise against reprisal killings or the burning of churches anywhere in the country. Muslims are better when they practice the true teachings of Islam. The Glorious Qur’an says, “Goodness and evil are not equal. Therefore pay evil with goodness and see how enemies become close friends (Qur’an 41:34).”

Politics / Re: MURIC SEEKS COMPENSATION FOR IGBO MUSLIM VICTIMS, TO REPORT WIKE TO ICC by OfficialMURIC: 4:50am On Oct 28, 2020
The River state government has been weaponising Christians against Muslims. He destroyed our Mosques, declared Rivers a Christian state (with the aim to legitimise Islamaphobia) and has turned blind eyes against the killings of Muslims in his state. It is obviously clear that Islam and Christianity do not share a common interest. One (Islam) preaches peaceand tolerance. The other breeds hatred and violence. We have this for him:

History has its eyes on him, and we are willing to escalate this above and beyond any acceptable level.

A storm is coming!

Politics / MURIC SEEKS COMPENSATION FOR IGBO MUSLIM VICTIMS, TO REPORT WIKE TO ICC by OfficialMURIC: 4:30am On Oct 28, 2020
The Nigerian Islamic human rights organization has berated the killing of 11 (eleven) Muslims of Igbo extraction in the South East and South South during the #EndSARS protests. The group also condemned the burning of Orlu Central Mosque as well as attacks on other mosques in the two sub-regions.

The condemnation was contained in a press statement circulated to pressmen on Monday, 26th October, 2020 by the Director and Founder of the organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

MURIC said, “We are shocked by news of mob attacks on Muslims of Igbo origin in the South East and South South during the #EndSARS demonstrations. At least 11 (eleven) Muslims were killed: 1 (one) in the South East and 10 (ten) in the South South. They were killed for no other reason than for being Muslims. Members of IPOB killed 10 Muslims in Port Harcourt. Seriki’s son was burnt beyond recognition. One Muslim was also killed in Imo State while four others were injured. Orlu Central Mosque was completely destroyed by arsonists while Hausa markets worth millions of naira were also destroyed.

“MURIC is in possession of two video clips that have gone viral. One was shot by renowned militant leader, Alhaji Mujahid Asari Dokubo. In the first video, Asari Dokubo berated the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its leadership for allowing IPOB to become a group that hates Muslims and one that hunts them to the point of death.

“In the second video, an unidentified Igbo woman in hijab who spoke Igbo language intermittently said, ‘I want to ask a question from my fellow Ibo brothers and sisters. Please, I want to know. Anything that happens in the East, you people will go after Ibo Muslims. You people will be chanting, ‘kill all the Ibo Muslims, Kill all the Ibo Muslims. Are we no longer your blood? What is it that we are looking for? All of us were protesting. We were chanting for good government. Ayin sonaa chummuo. At the middle, udon summa isin muomuo, diban unonpla. At the middle, you turn around. Have you seen what is happening? Both of us were pursuing spirit. At the middle, almost to catch the spirit, you turn around and said ‘I am smelling spirit spirit (sic). Is it good? Please, please, you people should leave everybody to practice his own religion.’

“MURIC strongly condemns the killing of Muslims in Igboland. We believe that it is the climax of an undercurrent of persecution, intimidation and humiliation of Igbo Muslims by their fellow Igbo. Families of Igbo Christians who revert to Islam are boycotted and disowned. They are denied all rights and priviledges, including the right to inherit. State governments in the East and South South deprive Muslims of their Allah-given fundamental human rights. We have the details and these will be revealed in due course.

“In the same vein, we hold the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, responsible for the attack on Muslims in the South South. His ban on IPOB is mere lip-service. He personally hates Muslims and detests the sight of mosques. He was responsible for the destruction of the Trans Amadi Central Mosque in August 2019. Wike was severally quoted to have declared Rivers State a Christian State not too long ago. We have set the machinery in motion to report him to the United Nations and the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Hague for incitement and for crimes against humanity.

“We therefore hang the killing of Muslims in Port Harcourt on his neck. If the witch cried yesterday and the child dies today, do we need to start searching for the killer of that child? IPOB reasoned that there is no raison d’etre for Muslims to live in Rivers State since the state had been declared a Christian State by the governor. Wike gave IPOB the licence to kill Muslims.

“To our Muslim brothers in the South East and South South, we send fraternal sympathy. Our solidarity with you is forever. Our love for you cannot be dissolved by geographical boundaries. We feel your tribulation. Your pains hit our bones to the very marrows. We share your grief. Fear not, for you are not alone. Apart from Almighty Allah who is always with you, we, your brothers and sisters North and South West of Nigeria stand up to demand justice for you. Remain steadfast in your faith, Islam. Your lamentations shall not be in vain and we will not stop until justice is not only delivered but is seen to have been delivered.

“In order to calm frayed nerves, MURIC hereby demands the following:

1. The setting up of a judicial commission of inquiry into the killing of Muslims in the South-South as well as the burning of Orlu Central Mosque;

2. The Rivers State Government must pay compensation to the families of the victims within a period not exceeding three months;

3. Imo State Government must rebuild and re-equip Orlu Central Mosque within the same period;

4. The hospital bills of all Muslims injured during the attacks must be paid by the state governments and

5. All Muslims who lost properties due to attacks during the period must be compensated.

“We are in constant contact with the victims and the reparations will be closely monitored. Meanwhile we appeal to Muslims throughout Nigeria to refrain from seeking vengeance. There must be no reprisals of any kind. We urge Muslims to remain calm and watchful. Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.”

Politics / Re: Muric Rebukes Ogun Governor Over Bb Naija Gifts by OfficialMURIC: 5:56am On Oct 10, 2020
For we allowing this show to be aired annually, It’s equivalent of shoving our generation into a single room and turning the key.

We ask governor Dapo What kind of state is he seeking to build?

We have already raised several red flags on governor Dapo whose his background and stated priorities suggest a narrower focus on the economy and general wellbeing of Ogun state people. The attention to detail and patience that good governance demands are not part of his narrative. It's time for him to change course and set his priorities right.
Politics / Muric Rebukes Ogun Governor Over Bb Naija Gifts by OfficialMURIC: 12:27am On Oct 10, 2020
The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, yesterday 7th October, 2020, gave a bungalow and N5 million cash gifts to the winner of Big Brother Naija, Moshood Olamilekan Agbeleshebioba. He also appointed him the Ambassador of the Youth in Ogun State.

However, the Nigerian Islamic human rights organization, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has described Governor Abiodun’s action as disappointing, disgusting, misplaced and myopic. MURIC’s reaction was revealed in a statement circulated to the media on Thursday, 8th October, 2020.

MURIC said, “We are miffed by Governor Abiodun’s action. What does he think he is promoting? A whole governor is idolizing indecency and encouraging greed and materialism. It is disappointing, disgusting, misplaced and myopic. This is happening at a time millions of young men and women are roaming the streets of Oke Agbede, Itoko and Asupopo in the state’s capital in search of jobs that are not there. That N5 million could have evacuated twenty five area boys from Panseke, Lafenwa and Ashero, all in Abeokuta. These are roads that the governor himself plies everyday and he sees abject poverty printed on the faces of the youth.

“It is misplaced priority. What is in BB Naija that the governor has to waste the resources of Ogun State on a contestant who had already been over-pampered by the organisers? Afterall Moshood received a whopping N85 million, a car and a house from the organizers. Why give him a house again when he had already been given one? Is it a reward for hard work, intellectual display or what? How old is the winner? BB Naija is a cornucopia of repulsive, nauseating and Bohemian behavior. Or what does Governor Abiodun think of open sex on television being watched by all and sundry, including our underaged children? It is a big shame.

“The Muslim Rights Concern is deeply concerned that even our traditional rulers all over the country failed to add their voices to that of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, when he called on the Federal Government (FG) to ban BB Naija. No single traditional ruler spoke in support of that clarion call.

“FG must also take responsibility for the damage this irresponsible programme has done to the psyche of Nigerian youth. How can we allow a foreign idiosyncracy to bastardise the values and norms which we hold very dearly in our land? It is not Nigerian if it is not Nigerian.

“The Glorious Qur’an says, ‘Evil has appeared on land and sea because of (the evil) which men's hands have committed, so that He may make them taste part of that which they have done, in order that they may show remorse. (30:41)

“We congratulate Governor Abiodun for demonising hard work, for idolising laziness and for celebrating indecency. Abiodun has undone all that his predecessors had done in the past. We commend him for encouraging greed and materialism among the youth. The police in Ogun State should simply go to sleep since we have a governor whose body language seeks the proliferation of Yahoo Yahoo, 419 and armed robbery. That is what the governor has succeeded in doing because the peers of the BB Naija winner will definitely aspire to get by the bend what they cannot attain by the straight.

“If we may ask our over-generous governor, what did you give those who excelled in educational feats in Ogun State? We have teenagers like Ojo Tobiloba of The Scholars Universal in Ota who scored 354 in the 2020 UTME examination. Ismail Opaleye scored 338 while Nafeesat Ajani had 320. What did the governor give them? Governor Abiodun has elected to sacrifice excellence on the altar of mediocrity. His action will have far-reaching effect as he has given official recognition to the growing faith in the dogma of getting rich young and by fair or foul means.

“Nigerians are sick and tired of some of our political leaders. It is in all political parties. Abiodun is an APC governor but he suffers from acute desertification of the APC change mantra. We wonder where that N5 million came from. We doubt if it came from the governor’s private pocket. We are equally worried about the former owner of the bungalow which the governor gave Moshood. Was it Abiodun’s private building?

“As we draw the curtains, our candid advice to the governor is to return that money to government coffers if it was taken from tax payer’s money. The governor must also withdraw the bungalow if it is not his private building. He can build a whole estate for the BB Naija winner from his personal money for all we care. As for the ambassadorial appointment, decent parents will not allow the winner of BB Naija to represent their children.”

Politics / Re: RESTRUCTURING: WE DEMAND SIX RELIEFS FOR MUSLIMS - MURIC by OfficialMURIC: 3:54am On Oct 07, 2020
The problem remains what it always has been: oppression of Muslims by the Christians, and can only be resolved when the above issues are settled.

But after more than a century of trying to use force to forge a united country, now may be the time to try doing so through our consent.

Until the government decides whether it agrees with our demands or not, the rows are bound to continue.

Politics / RESTRUCTURING: WE DEMAND SIX RELIEFS FOR MUSLIMS - MURIC by OfficialMURIC: 3:32am On Oct 07, 2020
Sequel to the clamour for restructuring Nigeria, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has reminded the Federal Government and the general public of the six reliefs it enumerated and demanded for Nigerian Muslims since October, 2017.

The six reliefs were revisited in a press statement issued by the Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Tuesday, 5th October, 2020, exactly three years later.

The statement reads:

“We demanded six reliefs on behalf of Nigerian Muslims exactly three years ago. The reliefs were contained in a press release issued by MURIC on 9th October, 2017. We are aware that the present government is not positively disposed to restructuring and it has declared its determination to avoid it. Nonetheless, we have decided to represent demands which are of special interest to Muslims for the records.

“Let us make it abundantly clear ab initio that MURIC has zero tolerance for separatist and secessionist proclivities. We therefore reiterate our rejection of demands for Biafra, Oduduwa Republic and all other parochial, selfish and unpatriotic agitations.

“It is equally important at this juncture to state that this press statement is designed to remind those who are agitating for the balkanization of Nigeria and restructuring that they are not the only ones who have grudges in this union. Just as there is no perfect marriage, there is no nation in the world without its headaches. In the same vein, just as couples manage their imperfections and try to understand their differences in order to avoid broken homes, so do stakeholders in nation-building sink their group interests for national cohesion.

“We reproduce below our press statement dated 9th October, 2017 and captioned ‘Restructuring Nigeria: Muslims seek Six Reliefs’ (https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/245569-restructuring-islamic-group-muric-seeks-six-reliefs-nigerian-muslims.html). It should be noted that none of the six demands has been addressed hitherto:

“The Federal Government appears set for restructuring particularly with the setting up of a committee on this crucial matter by the ruling party, the All Peoples’ Congress (APC). Restructuring became popular after the South East, South South and a section of the South West complained about marginalization. Several politicians from both the opposition and the ruling party have since spoken in support of this clamour.

“However, we of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) dissociate ourselves from all agitations for secession. We condemn all irredentist movements rearing their ugly heads in Southern Nigeria, particularly the agitation for the creation of Oduduwa Republic. We affirm clearly, unambiguously and unequivocally, that Muslim leaders in Yorubaland were not carried along before those demands were tabled. Nonetheless, just as some ethnic groups have complained of disaffections, we contend that Nigerian Muslims also nurse serious grudges bordering on marginalization against the Nigerian state.

“We must start from the lanes of history because today was born from the wombs of yesterday. Islam has been in Nigeria since the 11th century and the British met Islam on ground when they arrived in the 19th century (800 years later). The British did not deem it fit to observe the rules of natural justice when they colonized the country as all Islamic landmarks were eliminated and supplanted with a wholly Christian system.

“This injustice may have been at the root of frequent religious crisis in Nigeria because successive governments after independence refused to listen to the agitations of Muslims for a review of the status quo. The issues being raised by Muslims are listed in the following paragraphs so that the authorities may address them when restructuring eventually begins.

One: Nigerians enjoy a total of eight (cool public holidays in a year. These are Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Id al-Kabir, Id al-Fitr and Maulud an-Nabiyy. Five (5) of the eight holidays belong to Christians (Christmas Day, Boxing Day, 1st January, i.e, New Year Day, Good Friday and Easter Monday). Only three (3) holidays belong to Muslims, viz, Id al-Kabir, Id al-Fitr and Maulud an-Nabiyy.

“Restructuring should give Muslims 1st Muharram. This will bring the total number of Muslim holidays to four while Christian holidays remain five.

“Two: Christian marriages contracted inside churches or registries are held sacrosanct everywhere in Nigeria whereas Muslim marriages (nikah) are not recognized for any official purpose. Muslim couples find themselves in a cul de sac each time they presented their Islamic marriage certificates for official purposes. It is paradoxical that in a democracy, one marriage conducted by a religious group is acceptable while the other is not. What kind of constitution is Nigeria using?

“Islamic marriages should be recognized in all official circles where Christian marriages are recognized. The Nigerian Marriage Act (1990) should therefore be revisited.

“Three: Nigeria has a two-day weekend, viz, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was a half day during the colonial era and Sunday was the only full day at the weekend. However, Saturday was made a full day to favour the Seventh Day Adventists, a Christian denomination during the regime of General Yakubu Gowon, a Christian military ruler. It is very clear, therefore, that the two weekend days recognized in Nigeria belong to Christians while Muslims have none since Friday, the Muslim day of worship, remains a working day.

“It is pertinent to note that Friday was a work-free day until the British brought Christianity and stopped Muslims from enjoying their Allah-given fundamental human right. The relief we are seeking through restructuring is that Friday should be declared free to assume parity with the Christians’ Sunday. While we are not seeking anarchy, we are confident that the Federal Government (FG) has all the paraphernalia of administration to work out the modalities.

Four: Immigration officials engage in regular stereotyping of Muslims who apply for international passports. They intimidate Muslims particularly at the point of taking pictures. Muslim males are ordered to remove their caps; Imams are coerced into removing their turbans; bearded Muslims are compelled to shave or trim their beards; hijab-wearing Muslim women are made to remove their hijabs or ordered to draw their hijab backwards to reveal their ears. The same scenario plays itself out in driving licence, national identity card offices and during registration for elections.

“In the process, thousands of Muslims have been denied international passports, driving licences and national identity cards while millions have been disenfranchised during elections. The authorities must find a way of stopping the persecution and profiling of Muslims.

“Five: Uniformed groups in Nigeria, including the army, police, uniformed voluntary groups, nurses, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), students of primary and secondary schools, etc, use uniforms designed by the Christian colonialists. These uniforms should have been reviewed after independence because they only suit the Christians. Some of them constitute breaches to Islamic dress code and offend the sensibility of Muslims who are compelled to wear the uniforms regardless of their inner feeling of resentment.

“In view of the fact that Western countries like Britain, Canada and the United States have designed uniforms with hijab for their female Muslim police, soldiers, students, etc, Nigeria’s restructuring authorities should borrow a leaf from those countries.

“Six: There is no single Shari’ah court in South Western Nigeria where Muslims constitute the majority. This is contrary to what obtained in Yorubaland before the advent of the British. There were Shariah courts in Ede, Iwo, Ikirun, Ibadan, etc. Yoruba Muslims are now compelled to take their civil matters like inheritance, marriage, etc to Christo-Western courts. This is preposterous and unacceptable

“We demand the establishment of Shariah courts in all South Western states including Edo State where there is a significant percentage of Muslims.

“We call the attention of FG and the restructuring committee of the APC to the above six reliefs. Muslims are in bondage in this country and we believe that restructuring should emancipate people in captivity. APC promised change. This change can only be meaningful to us if it breaks the shackles around our necks. We have begged enough for the restoration of our Allah-given and fundamental human rights. We are tired of begging. Restructuring is about reapportioning the dividends of democracy such that it goes round and it is not restricted to one section.

Colonial administration was grossly unfair to Muslims. Nigeria was Christianised by Britain and Muslims bore the brunt. We suffered forceful conversion, denial of rightful employment and even worse forms of persecution. But what is most disappointing is the policy of exclusion adopted by post-independence governments.

“On a final note, we demand full integration and full recognition as bona fide citizens of Nigeria, not second or third class citizens. We are the aggrieved party. The British most brutally and most unjustly took all we had from us, giving us nothing in return and offering no relief. It has continued to give us a feeling of rejection, marginalization, denial of the dividends of democracy and lack of a sense of belonging. The time for redress is now and our six-point relief is here for all to digest.

Politics / Re: STOP DECEIVING NIGERIANS: MURIC TELLS YORUBA SEPARATISTS by OfficialMURIC: 6:14am On Sep 28, 2020
MURIC deride these sheeples who see themselves as enlightened and brave. They have dispatch
some newly arrived propagandists from CAN (and some phoney Islamic organisations ) to wheel out an arsenal of aggression and divisiveness.Their embrace of secessionist ideology is riven with contradictions and hypocrisy, making it more hype than substance. They need to have the wool pulled over their eyes.
Politics / STOP DECEIVING NIGERIANS: MURIC TELLS YORUBA SEPARATISTS by OfficialMURIC: 6:01am On Sep 28, 2020
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has told the protagonists of the proposed Oduduwa Republic to stop using fake Islamic organisations to camouflage as Muslims. The human rights organization urged Nigerians to be wary of fake Islamic groups masquerading as genuine and declaring support for the secessionists.

This was revealed by the Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, in a press statement issued on Wednesday, 23rd September, 2020.

“The protagonists of the proposed Oduduwa Republic are desperate. Their desperation has reached a crescendo where they have resorted to dishonourable actions. This should jog the conscience of honest Nigerians. There is nothing wrong to have differences and disagreements. It is also normal to have ambition. But what is abnormal and ignoble is to pursue your ambition by hook or crook.

“Those in the irredentist Oduduwa Republic camp have descended so low that they use fake Muslim names and counterfeit Islamic organisations to issue statements in order to confuse Nigerians. Their plan is to deceive Nigerians and the rest of the world into believing that Yoruba Muslims are with them in their secession bid. This is not politics. It is outright dishonesty. It is not only cowardly, but ignoble, despicable and condescending. It should be condemned by all men and women of honour.

“Those behind it should be ashamed of themselves and those still supporting them should realize by now that they are being led by the nose. We urge Nigerians and the outside world to wake up to the antics of shenanigans masquerading as leaders of Yoruba self-determination groups. Yorubas are known to have great qualities of honesty and transparency. That is why the average Yoruba man, based on established Yoruba norms and values, is proud to be called an ‘Omoluabi’, i.e. a man of honour.

“But the reverse is the case with the self-acclaimed leaders of the present Yoruba irredentists. They are another cup of tea entirely. They are prepared to get their reckless and ill-thought-out ambition by fair or foul means. Instead of using superior logic to convince Nigerians, they tell lies at will to confuse the gullible. They forge names and concoct counterfeit organisations just by snapping their fingers.

“All these are in an effort to deceive the public. Our question to them is very simple: what kind of ‘republic’ do you want to establish with falsehood? Why must you resort to deception, lies and false propaganda? It is sheer mischief, nothing else. This is where Nigerians have to choose: should we follow liars and mischief makers or should we queue behind men of honour and truth? The devil you know is always better than the one you do not know. We may not have gold or silver today, but we will never deceive you with lies or half-truths. Unless you are a certificated gambler, it is too dangerous to follow liars to terra incognito.

“The names of fake Islamic groups like Yoruba Jamatru, Yoruba Islamic Organisation (YISO) and Yoruba Muslim Community have been used to deceive the general public. We alert the press and the good people of Nigeria that these are all fake groups conjured by the secessionist camp.

“Observers of the religious circle in the South West will note that notable Islamic organisations that have been speaking for Muslims in the region are the umbrella body for all Islamic organisations in the zone, the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), the Companion, The Criterion, The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), FOMWAN, NASFAT, QAREEB, the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), The Muslim Congress (TMC), The Ansaruddeen Society, Nawairudeen Society, MURIC, the Movement for Islamic Cultural Affairs (MICA) and a few others whom space cannot allow us to mention here.

“Most of these Islamic organisations have issued statements rejecting the Oduduwa Republic but the irredentists want to distort history by making forged statements using faceless Islamic organisations. This is criminal. We advise journalists to seek clarification from MUSWEN whenever any new group comments on the matter in order to avoid vicarious liability. MUSWEN is our umbrella organization in the South West and all Islamic groups in the South West are registered under it.

“We assert clearly, categorically and unequivocally that none of the so-called Islamic groups which have issued statements in support of a Yoruba Republic are known to us. They are fifth columnists created by the separatists with the aim of dividing the Yoruba Muslim community. But they have failed. It is not an Islamic organization if it is not an Islamic organization. The Yoruba Ummah is one, virile and indivisible. We therefore charge the Nigerian press to handle the Oduduwa Republic matter with utmost professionalism. The wheat must be separated from the chaff. This is not the time for yellow journalism. Neither is it the time for sensationalism.

“Statements issued by groups that are hitherto unknown in Christian, Muslim and traditional Yoruba circles should be checked and cross-checked. Media houses who publish statements made by fake groups will be held responsible for such statements. A certified journalist is expected to check the source of his or her information. The press must take responsibility.

“Those who allow the name of Yoruba Muslims to be used freely and irresponsibly will answer to Yoruba Muslims because we are going to make sure that we forward reports of fake statements to the security agents and legal action will be taken where necessary. The sources of those statements will be traced and all those involved will have questions to answer. This society must be sanitized.

“There must be consequences for irresponsible and mischievous statements and publications capable of causing the breakdown of law and order in the society. Yoruba Muslims have Allah-given fundamental right to enjoy freedom from molestation, harassment, intimidation and coercion from any quarters. MURIC will do everything possible within the laws of the land to guaranty this right.

“MURIC appeals to Nigerians, particularly the Yoruba people, to shine their eyes. These liars and forgers are advocatus diaboli whose only desire is to cause chaos in society. The Yoruba say ‘Omo ti o ba puro yio jale’ i.e. a child that tells lies will soon start stealing. Those who are now misleading you with lies will definitely steal all your money if ever Oduduwa Republic becomes a fait accompli. They are not to be trusted. They are making noise today because the tap from which free naira and dollar used to flow has been closed. We assure Nigerians that the agitation will die a natural death when the man they love to hate ends his tenure in 2023.

“To cut a long story short, we warn those agitating for the establishment of Oduduwa Republic to stop deceiving Nigerians by using Muslim names and fake Islamic organisations to issue statements. The Nigerian press has a duty to ensure that fake and faceless groups are not allowed to use it to cause disaffection in the society. Media houses are advised to publish only what they can be proud of as members of the noble profession.”

Politics / Re: SOUTHERN KADUNA: MURIC CONDEMNS KILLING OF MUSLIMS AFTER PEACE PACT by OfficialMURIC: 6:50am On Sep 15, 2020
The Kataf militias have grow more brazen in attacking and killing Muslims. This validate our suspicion that they are being sponsored by external bodies (most likely CAN). These militias have violated the peace plan by unleashing terror against the large numbers of unarmed Muslims.

The state will be forever altered for the worse if the killing of Muslims is allowed to slide.

We strongly codemn these killings and call on security agencies to investigate and arrest the perpetrators.
Politics / SOUTHERN KADUNA: MURIC CONDEMNS KILLING OF MUSLIMS AFTER PEACE PACT by OfficialMURIC: 6:33am On Sep 15, 2020
The Nigerian Muslim rights group, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has condemned the guerilla-style killing of Muslims and Fulanis in Zangon Kataf. The killings occurred on 8th and 9th September, 2020 thereby violating the peace pact of 22nd August, 2020.

MURIC condemned the killings in a press statement issued on Monday, 14th September, 2020 by its Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:

“Christian youths of Zangon Kataf have violated the 22nd August, 2020 peace pact initiated by the Agwa Atyap, Sir Dominic Gambo Yahaya between the Atyap and Hausa/Fulani. The breach occurred on Tuesday 8th September, 2020 when they launched guerrilla-like attacks on Muslims and Fulanis.

“The attacks resulted in the killing of three unarmed and defenseless Fulani near Gora Gan. Those killed were Abdullahi Hassan, Yusuf Hassan Sogiji and Abubakar Hassan. Two other Fulani men, Musa Hassan and his father, Malam Hassan are still being treated in Jama'a Clinic in Zonkwa after sustaining various degrees of injuries during the attack.

“Another Fulani Muslim, AbdulRashid Lawal Malan was killed by the Christian Kataf militia the following day, Wednesday, 9th September, 2020 in Kurmin Masara, near Bakin Kogi bridge. Maitalata Idris Narutu, a Fulani and native of Zango urban, who lives in Dokan Lere narrowly escaped being killed when his car was stopped at an illegal roadblock mounted by Atyap youth militia.

“The setting up of roadblocks by the youth militia contravenes the terms of the peace pact entered on 22nd August, 2020. Both local and international stakeholders must hold the Christian Atyap militia of Southern Kaduna responsible for starting the vicious cycle of bloodshedding after the recent peace pact.

“MURIC strongly condemns these killings and attacks on law-abiding Muslims. We call for stronger presence of security agents. It is high time soldiers are drafted to Southern Kaduna to enforce law and order. We advocate long term military presence until the inhabitants of Southern Kaduna learn how to peacefully coexist.

“As an organization whose motto is ‘Dialogue, No Violence’, we frown at violence in all its ramifications. We are fully committed to a peaceful approach to the Southern Kaduna crisis. We therefore call on both parties to sheath their swords.”

Politics / Re: MURIC TASKS FG TO CLARIFY ON ANTI-NORTH SCHOLARSHIP LIST by OfficialMURIC: 4:35am On Sep 03, 2020
If this turns out to be true, MURIC wholeheartedly condemns the list. We will never accept discrimination against Muslims. MURIC will continue to role in to liberate the light of Islam from the dark forces of religious oppression.

This list contains all the myriad injustices that still blight Muslims sixty years after the end of colonialism.

The degree to which the concentrated poverty in largely segregated Muslim communities shuts their members off from opportunity is alarming and must stop.

We will continue to stand for justice, fairness and equity no matter whose ox is gored.

Politics / MURIC TASKS FG TO CLARIFY ON ANTI-NORTH SCHOLARSHIP LIST by OfficialMURIC: 4:08am On Sep 03, 2020
An unconfirmed list of successful candidates for the 2020/2021 Federal Government scholarship has gone viral on social media thereby generating tension. The list is allegedly attached to a letter written by a prominent Nigerian citizen in the diaspora to the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu. The author complained that the list is an embarrassment to the entire North.

The Nigerian Muslim rights group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has intervened in the controversy by tasking the Federal Government to confirm or deny the authenticity of the controversial list. MURIC’s intervention came through a statement signed by the director of the human rights organisation, Professor Ishaq Akintola on Wednesday, 2nd September, 2020.

MURIC said, “It had better not be true. The entire nineteen (19) Northern states have just twenty-one (21) successful candidates while the seventeen (17) Southern states have seventy candidates (70). This list has greatly short-changed the North. What criteria was used to generate this anti-North list?

“Worse still, there is only one Muslim among the 13 successful candidates from North Central. This is unacceptable. Such an exercise can only be designed for the purpose of Christianising the North. It is as diabolical as it is Islamophobic. If confirmed, it means another cunny move to Christianise Nigeria has just been uncovered.

“Although we suspect that this list may be another fake news and the handiwork of enemies of peace, yet the Federal Government must speak up on it before it causes further damage to the already thin veneer of mutual confidence in the North-South dichotomy as well as the fragile Christian/Muslim relationship in the country.

“Not only that, it has been used as a tool for playing tortuous religious politics particularly the preference for picking minority Christians from predominantly Muslim areas. This could only have been intended to further deepen ignorance and poverty among the Muslims while the infinitesimally small Christian group in the North is unjustly lifted into the circle of elites and the bourgeoisie.

“It is rather unfortunate that while we consistently lay emphasis on the need for fair distribution of the dividends of democracy among all groups, some unpatriotic elements are determined to continue exhibiting gymnastic religiousity in their official capacities.

“In spite of recent attempts to smear our image in order to blackmail us into silence, MURIC will not keep quiet in the face of elite tyranny. We will not kowtow to the poohpooh of shenanigans masquerading as regional heroes. We will never accept discrimination against any tribe. We will continue to stand for justice, fairness and equity no matter whose ox is gored. Stability, peace and prosperity in every part of Nigeria is the major concern of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC).”

Politics / Re: Romoval Of El-Rufai: NBA Misfired - MURIC by OfficialMURIC: 2:16am On Aug 22, 2020
NBA as a group of learned literati, should have preference for the intellectuals over morons. But instead, NBA has shown itself to be phoney who will abandon its own morals in pursuit of sentiment and bias. Is NBA now an extension of CAN? Is El-Rufai responsible for the killings in Southern Kaduna? Why demonise El-Rufai and idolise Obasanjo and Wike (killers of innocent people and enemies of democracy)?

An association of NBA's breadth would fail if it depended solely on one side judgment. It is time NBA to chart a more robust course and rethink its policy after the dust settled. For an organisation in the need of momentous change, NBA has to decide who it puts its faith in.

Above all, NBA needs to regain legitimacy by holding itself to account.

Politics / Romoval Of El-Rufai: NBA Misfired - MURIC by OfficialMURIC: 1:29am On Aug 22, 2020
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) yesterday removed the name of El-Rufai from the list of speakers at its 2020 Virtual Annual General Conference (AGC) which is scheduled for 26th to 29th August, 2020.

Reacting to this development, an Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), described NBA’s action as parochial, myopic and jejune. MURIC spoke on Friday, 21st August, 2020 through its Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

“NBA yesterday dropped Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the governor of Kaduna State from the list speakers at its Virtual AGC which is billed to start on 26th August, 2020. It is high level prejudice. NBA as a group of learned literati should know better. It is parochial, myopic and jejune.

“The fact that NBA took the ill-advised step on account of a petition written by a group, Open Bar Initiative whose main fear is expressed as ‘One can be sure that he will also use the given platform to advance his conflated narrative, designed to deceive and confuse the nation on the real causes of the killings’ exposes NBA’s impatience, intolerance and self-conceit.

“Is it not better to hear him out than to lock him out? Is it not better to jaw-jaw than to war-war? The departure of the ambassador, they say, is the beginning of war. By dropping El-Rufai, NBA has declared war on the other side in the Southern Kaduna crisis. By so doing, it lost a golden chance to be part of the solution to the conflict. NBA has elected to be part of the problem.

“Was it not Jane Goodall who said, ‘Change happens by listening and then starting a dialogue with the people who are doing something you don’t believe is right’? Change cannot come through rejection and exclusion.

“How justifiable is NBA’s decision to exclude Governor El-Rufai from the virtual conference when people like Chief Olusegun Obasanjo of Odi and Zaki Biam fame and Governor Nyesom Wike are among the speakers? Who bulldozed the hotels of innocent people despite court orders? Who visited unspeakable violence on political opponents? Should NBA hobnob with people linked to genocide and undemocratic practices? So why demonise El-Rufai where killers of innocent people and enemies of democracy are idolised?

“MURIC calls on all lawyers from the North to boycott NBA’s AGC in protest against this open declaration of war on Northern Kaduna. Every little action of injustice must spark a reaction if tyranny is to be stopped in the world. NBA has crossed the red line in human relations and conflict management. No single lawyer from the North should participate in the AGC either as a resource person or as a participant unless NBA rescinds its decision to drop El-Rufai from the list of speakers. Injury to one is injury to all.”

Politics / Re: MAKINDE'S GOVERNING BOARD APPOINTMENT IS CHRISTIAN DOMINATED by OfficialMURIC: 5:53am On Jul 13, 2020
Governor Makinde has plenty of time to reflect on these loopsided appointments. At very least we have warn him of what will happen if he doesn’t change course. To my fellow South west muslims, what our destiny is going to be if we are ever as weak as we are now. We are being relegated to the bottom.

If something isn’t done, and done in a hurry, to bring muslims in Southwest out of their long years of penury, their long years of hurt and neglect, the whole southwest is doomed.

Let not allow another generation go by without we correcting these persistent injustices.
