Organisers of Nigeria’s most prestigious and longest-running sports award-Nigerian Sports Award (NSA), has set a target of 10,000 nominations to be received for this year’s edition of the award billed to hold on Friday, November 29, 2019at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Speaking at a media parley for the 2019 edition of the award tagged ‘Naija Flavour’ and held in Lagos on Thursday, August 8, 2019, the Chairman of the Award Panel,

Dr. Kweku Tandoh noted that the expectation for this year’s edition was to surpass the 7,000 nominations received in the last edition urging the media to join in the effort to raise public consciousness for nominations.

Tandoh who expressed his appreciation towards the media for their immense support over the years explained that it was imperative that the public get informed on how to nominate their favourite athletes or teams in the different categories of the award given that the All Africa Games as well as other sporting activities will be happening between now and October 15 October 2019, when the process is expected to end.

According to Tandoh, the media has a huge role to play in spreading the message to every part of the country as this would enable sports lovers in those places to be actively involved in the nomination process, thus giving the award more acceptability.

We want to get a diverse and geographical spread of the nominations from all the part of the nation. We don’t want it to be restricted to Lagos, we want to get the nominations from the West, North, East and the South.

If we let people from all these regions know what we are doing, I am sure they will all be interested in nominating one person or the other in all the categories that we have.

For me, the more the nominations, the more acceptable the result we would have at the end”, he stated. Tandoh further explained that the choice of the theme is a representation of what to expect promising that this year’s award would be a remarkable experience that reflects traditional flavor in its entirety.

Also speaking, Executive Director, Nigerian Sports Award, Mr. Kayode Idowu stated that nomination is open to Nigerians to select their favorite sport personalities by nominating in 22 different categories of the award.

According to him, these categories recognize individuals; males; female; physically challenged; continental participants; indigenous games, media and community builders.

They include; Racket Sports Person of the Year (Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, Badminton and Squash), Team Sports Person of the Year (Handball, Volleyball, Football, Basketball), Combat Sports Personality of the Year (Wrestling, Karate, Judo, Taekwondo & Boxing),

Individual sports person of the year (Weight lifting, Athletics), Basketball player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Discovery of the Year, Footballer of the Year (Women), Footballer of the Year (Men).

Nigeria’s leading cement manufacturer, Dangote Cement Plc has said that the rate at which consumers are winning valuable prizes in its on-going national consumer promotion tagged ‘bag of goodies’ is not a gimmick but a means of giving back to the loyal consumers of its cement products.

Chairman, Dangote Cement Plc, Aliko Dangote, stated this in Port Harcourt, Rivers State at a ceremony to reward winners in the promo where, a 35-year old Engineer and businessman, Tochukwu Anthony from Enugu State won the star Prize of a brand new GACs car, while Amadi Richard and Julius Ilabeshi won flat screen LED TV sets a piece.

Perhaps, the most interesting of all is that of a 70-year old moin-moin seller, Alhaja Nimota Adetoro who won a saloon car in Ikirun and god her car presented to her in Osogbo, Osun State capital amid pomp and trills.

Dangote who was represented by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a non-executive member of the company’s Board of directors, Dorathy Ufot in Port Harcourt and Benin stated that the presentation events were a proof to doubting Thomas’s that the promo is not a scam, pointing out that the company value its customers; which explains why it would not make any promise that it won’t fulfil.

He said: “We are giving out 43 cars nation-wide and other prizes. We are here today to say thank you for your contribution to the growth of our company, Dangote Cement PLC. We value our customers that is why we have brought this promo to Port Harcourt. Speaking with newsmen separately, the star prize winners commended the management of Dangote Cement for the worthy gesture of rewarding consumers of its products saying all the prizes on offer add economic value.

Alhaja Adetoro explained that the winning was a pleasant surprise to her and that Dangote Cement has done what no one has ever dreamt of pointing out that “the whole arrangement to me is like a dream.

Timi Frank, the former deputy national secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC)? called on imams, pastors and traditional rulers to beg former President Goodluck Jonathan for forgiveness as he revealed how he alongside others fabricated lies to sabotage his government.

Lamenting over the insecurity witnessed across the country, the former APC spokesperson disclosed that he has personally asked the former Nigerian leader for forgiveness.

I call on Nigerians that we should beg former President Goodluck Jonathan for wrongly voted him out and sabotaged his government.

I must confess that as an APC figure in 2015, we fabricated many lies against Jonathan, though I have publicly apologised to him but other Nigerians, especially the pastors, Imams, traditional rulers and other opinion leaders should beg for forgiveness too,” he said.

It is obvious now that insecurity in our nation has gone out of hand. The challenge was limited to a zone under Goodluck Jonathan but presently no state, including General Buhari’s home state is secured.

Questioning the Buhari-led government on the whereabouts of the $1 billion withdrawn from the excess crude account (ECA) to fight insecurity, Timi Frank admitted the entrenchment of democracy and rule of law in Jonathan's administration.

Under Jonathan, Nigerians abroad were relocating back home but under Buhari Nigerians are running away. Under Jonathan Nigerians are respected all over the world but that has since gone under Buhari.

Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, have dragged a man, Fatai Taye Sulaimon, 20, who claimed to be a Revenue collector agent with the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos and four others before a Lagos Magistrates’ Court for allegedly belonging to an unlawful society, Aiye Cult Confraternity.

Police identified other suspects as Kabiru Imam, 26, Hammed Ibilola, 27, Jelili Adeola, 27 and Seun Jenty, 27.

According to the police, trouble started for the accused persons when a concerned citizens of Ibeju Lekki, Lagos petitioned the Commissioner of Police, CP, Lagos State Police Command that suspected cult members were killing innocent people and making life unbearable for them in the area.

Following the report, the CP deployed his team to the area to arrest the suspects and restore peace. The operatives swooped on the suspects and arrested the five accused persons while others managed to escaped.

The accused were charged before the Igbosere Magistrates’ Court on a two-count of managing an unlawful society called Aiye cult confraternity.

Police counsel, Ingobo Emby told the court in charge No. W/20/2019 that the accused persons committed the offences on 14 May, 2019 at Ibeju Lekki, Lagos.

Emby informed the court that the accused were arrested following a petition by members of the concerned citizens of Ibeju-Lekki.

He said the offences committed were punishable under section 411 and 42 of the criminal law of Lagos State, 2015.

All the accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and Magistrate A. O. Alogba granted them bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Alogba adjourned the case till 27 August, 2019 for mention and ordered that all the defendants be kept at the Ikoyi Prison, Lagos till they perfected their bail conditions.

Here are some facts you need to know about him:

1. Akintola Williams was born on 9 August, 1919, a year after the end of the First World War.

2. His grandfather was Z.A. Williams, a merchant prince from Abeokuta.

3. His father, Thomas Ekundayo Williams was a clerk in the colonial service who set up a legal practice in Lagos after training in London, England.

4. Akintola Williams was the older brother of Rotimi Williams, popularly called Timi the law
His other younger brother was the late Rev. James Kehinde Williams, a Christianminister.

5. Akintola Williams attended Olowogbowo Methodist Primary School, Lagos in the 1930s

6. His brother, Rotimi Williams, also attended the same primary school.

7. Akintola Williams attended the CMS Grammar School, Lagos.
8. He went on to Yaba Higher Collegeon a UAC scholarship, obtaining a diploma in commerce.

9. In 1944, he travelled to England where he studied at the University of London.

10. Studying Banking and Finance, he graduated in 1946 with a Bachelor of Commerce.

11. He continued his studies and qualified as a chartered accountant in England in 1949.

12. He was one of the founders of the Egbe Omo Oduduwa society while in London, with Dr. Oni Akerele as President and Chief Obafemi Awolowo as Secretary.

Victor Ogunyinka The Federal High Court in Abuja High has granted the Department State Service, DSS, permission to detain publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, for 45 days.

Sowore The DSS had filed a motion to the court to detain the convener of the proposed #RevolutionNow protest for 90 days, but the court only granted 45 days.

Recall that Sowore was whisked away by members of the DSS at his resident over the weekend for what it termed ‘treasonable’ statement, for describing the proposed protest as a revolution.

Mixed reactions have trailed his arrest and that of several other demonstrators.

Ondo State Police Command, yesterday, dispelled insinuations that security agencies in the state planned to sweep the rape case against soldiers under the carpet.

Police Some soldiers were alleged to have raped a 300 level student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko at a military checkpoint.

Spokesperson of the Ondo Police Command, Mr. Femi Joseph, in a statement, said: Ondo State Police Command wishes to announce to the general public that the alleged rape case against a soldier attached to the 32 Artillery Brigade Akure is currently under investigation.

The command in synergy with our military counterparts will leave no stone unturned to ensure that justice is served in this case.

We, therefore, wish to inform Nigerians that there is no attempt whatsoever to sweep the case under the carpet as being insinuated by some people.

Speaking on the Tuesday bank robbery in Iju, Akure North council area of the state, the Police spokesperson said that the timely intervention of police detectives foiled the robbery. Joseph said:

The robbers who used dynamites to force their way into the bank succumbed to the superior firepower of our men by escaping into the bush with some of them suffering bullet wounds.

Our men are on the trail of the suspects who were forced to abandon the two vehicles they came with.
